Royal consent granted, says MB
Negeri Sembilan polls set to test political loyalties
Ű BY HARITH KAMAL newsdesk@thesundaily.com
PETALING JAYA: The Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly was dissolved, paving the way for a state election after weeks of deepening political and constitutional turmoil over a disputed royal proclamation. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun made the announcement on Thursday, saying royal consent had been granted by Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir. He said the decision was made following discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that it was made in full accordance with the state constitution. “I have followed the provisions of the state constitution. I have received His Royal Highness’s consent.” He added that the Election Commission would be formally notified following the dissolution, with nomination and polling dates to be set thereafter. He said Pakatan Harapan would contest all 36 state seats, with coalition seat allocations expected to be finalised the following week. When asked whether the dissolution was driven by political instability, Aminuddin made no attempt to sidestep the question. “We look at the situation where support changed. At first there was support, then it was withdrawn. It was no longer suitable for the government. So, I believe it is necessary to give the public a new mandate to decide the future.” Negeri Sembilan became the second state heading to the polls, following Johor’s assembly dissolution on Monday. In the 2023 state election, PH won 17 seats and BN 14, forming a unity government with a commanding 31-seat majority in the 36-seat assembly. The dissolution came after weeks of compounding political and constitutional crises that had shaken the state to its core. The turbulence had its roots in the removal of Datuk Mubarak Dohak as Undang of Sungai Ujong on May 13 last year, following allegations of multiple breaches of adat and customary laws. The crisis deepened on April 17 this year when the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang confirmed his ouster, citing 33 alleged adat violations. Two days later, the four Undang — the ruling chieftains of Sungai Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau — announced at a press conference that Tuanku Muhriz had been deposed and that Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Jaafar had been named as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar. The declaration, made on grounds of alleged misconduct, offered no specifics. Under Adat Perpatih , the four Undang hold the power to elect the Yang di-Pertuan Besar. Aminuddin rejected the proclamation the following day, saying the state government deemed it invalid as it had been signed and read by Mubarak – whom it did not recognise as the lawful Undang of Sungai Ujong. The announcement sparked a constitutional debate over whether proper procedure had been observed in deposing a ruler. On April 22, the four Undang pressed the state government to postpone the opening of the State Legislative Assembly, insisting Tuanku Muhriz could no longer act as Ruler. The state government refused, and Tuanku Muhriz proceeded to officially open the assembly the following day, without the four Undang . The dispute took a sharper political turn on April 27 when 14 Umno/BN assemblymen reportedly withdrew support for Aminuddin’s administration. Negeri Sembilan Umno chief Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias cited the MB’s handling of the royal crisis as the reason. The move left the state government in a precarious position. Stripped of BN’s backing, Aminuddin would have been left commanding just 17 seats, with Perikatan Nasional holding the remaining five. Anwar moved swiftly to contain the fallout. Following an audience with Tuanku Muhriz on April 28, he confirmed that Aminuddin would remain as MB and that Tuanku Muhriz wished for the state administration to continue as normal.
government’s recognition of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, while emphasising that the sovereignty of the Malay Rulers’ institution will continue to be safeguarded in accordance with the Constitution. He said developments in the state were “concerning”, but emphasised that any challenge to the royal institution must be pursued strictly through proper legal and constitutional channels, backed by solid justification. “We, as the federal government, although not directly involved (in the state affairs), must provide guidance, particularly to the Malay community and Malaysians in general. The PETALING JAYA: Negeri Sembilan’s snap state election is set to test political loyalties in one of Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) long-held strongholds, amid questions over whether the incumbent coalition is able defend its mandate or face a resurgence from Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN). International Islamic University Malaysia political analyst and ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute fellow Assoc Prof Dr Syaza Shukri said PH may still hold an advantage in Negeri Sembilan, citing its position as a two-term incumbent and public satisfaction with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun’s administration. She added that the early election is “not very popular” among some voters, with parts of the electorate blaming Umno for withdrawing support from the state leadership, a factor that could potentially strengthen PH’s voter turnout. “PH supporters might come out strongly to defend PH in Negeri Sembilan. The contest is likely to be a straight fight between PH and BN, with PN expected to face a tougher path in gaining ground.” She also pointed out that Negeri Sembilan differs from Johor and Malacca due to its high number of voters working in the Klang Valley, who might have no problem returning home to vote, which could help push turnout above 60%, a level that traditionally benefits PH. Syaza said BN’s main opportunity lies in recovering Malay votes that shifted to PN in the 2023 election, rather than directly eroding PH’s support base. “The only way BN could have an advantage is if PH voters do not turn out to vote. “However, sentiment in Negeri Sembilan is different, as voters likely want to defend the PH administration. “In 2023, PN gained because some Malay voters rejected the BN-PH alliance. “PN may still retain a few seats such as Labu and Paroi, but is unlikely to make major breakthroughs.” She described the election as “50-50”, depending on voter turnout and whether BN could regain Malay support, while also highlighting the growing influence of younger voters who may favour PH. Undang Yang Empat at a ceremony held at a resort in Malacca yesterday. He also said he supported Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun’s decision to dissolve the state legislative assembly and return the mandate to the public through a state election, citing the need to resolve political uncertainty. “I fully support the menteri besar’s view that, given the confusion and lack of clarity, it is best to hold an election, and His Royal Highness has also given his consent. “For us, we move forward while continuing to work with Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. Any other course of action, if pursued through proper channels, is not something we will obstruct.” – Bernama Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said the timing of Negeri Sembilan’s snap state election appears to be closely linked to broader political strategy. He said while Johor’s earlier election was seen to create positive political momentum for Umno, Negeri Sembilan is now in a more “awkward position” as it cannot wait for the outcome of other political developments that could benefit Umno. “Compared with Johor, Negeri Sembilan has more locally rooted issues linked to its monarchy system and Adat Perpatih , where Umno and PH are seen as taking different positions.” He added that Umno in Negeri Sembilan is not as strong as in Johor, although it remains in a relatively stable position. However, he suggested that the political advantage seen in Johor could be offset if elections are held simultaneously across states. Azmi said the monarchy-related issues could become a central theme in the Negeri Sembilan campaign, potentially shaping voter sentiment in the upcoming state election.
monarchy is not just a name; it carries dignity, conventions and rules. Therefore, we will continue to uphold the position, dignity and sovereignty of the Rulers.” Anwar said the federal government would continue to work with and recognise Tuanku Muhriz as the legitimate Yang di-Pertuan Besar, urging all parties to avoid actions that could cause public concern. “Any attempt to remove or impeach a Ruler would carry serious implications for the country and its stability. That is why we take this matter seriously, and I have conveyed this view to the relevant parties.” Anwar was responding to media reports regarding the installation of Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan by the “We will watch whether BN (is able to) convince the Malay voters to return to Umno or perhaps PAS’s influence has breached southern Peninsular Malaysia.” University of Tasmania Asia Institute Tasmania director Prof James Chin said PH had little choice but to call a state election due to rising political instability in Negeri Sembilan, including tensions over attempts to replace the state Ruler and challenges in the state assembly. “If they don’t go for it, then Umno may even push for a vote of no confidence.” He said all major coalitions could benefit from the election in different ways depending on their performance. He said PH, especially DAP, would aim to defend and strengthen its Chinese-majority seats, while BN, particularly Umno, could gain influence if it wins the state government, and PAS under PN is looking to show it could make gains in the state. He also emphasised the possible entry of Bersama could further complicate voter dynamics, particularly among Chinese voters who may now have an additional political alternative.

Education office first to use industrial design in Malaysia SABAK BERNAM: The Sabak Bernam District Education Office, costing RM16.93 million, is the first of its kind in Malaysia to apply the industrial design concept to its interior space. Selangor Public Works Department director Shukri Ishak said the new building was built to provide a more conducive working environment and to improve the quality of educational service delivery in the district, Bernama reported. “This building is the first in Malaysia to use the industrial design concept for its conventional interior design. This provides a unique, fresh and modern visual identity for the building, that comes under the Education Ministry. “The department, as the implementing agency, hopes that this new building would have a significant impact on the quality of educational services in Selangor, and Sabak Bernam in particular,” he said during the event to launch the building. The new building was officiated by the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on Thursday as part of the second day of the Program Gagasan Rumpun Selangor Daerah Sabak Bernam 2026. Shukri added that the construction of the building was carried out over 183 weeks, starting from the site possession date on July 21, 2021 to full completion on March 19. He also said the four-storey building has 90 rooms and workspaces, and is equipped with three customer-friendly service counters and 11 exits that meet emergency safety standards. He said the construction of the building reflects the commitment of all parties in ensuring the comprehensive implementation of the project, including the use of high-quality materials to guarantee a sustainable structure. Sabak Bernam district education officer Marhani M. Haniff said the new facility is expected to improve the operations of the management, which involves 71 staff members comprising 43 officers and 28 implementation group members. “This facility will cover the administrative needs of 64 schools, comprising 46 primary schools and 18 secondary schools, to ensure the continued excellence of 20,534 students in the district. It also supports 2,242 teachers and 398 support staff members in the school execution group to maintain the momentum of local educational excellence.” – Bernama Claims of Segamat Hospital closure dismissed as false JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Health Department has dismissed claims circulating on social media that the Segamat Hospital will cease operations beginning July 1. State Health Director Dr Mohtar Pungut@Ahmad said the hospital remains fully operational and there are no plans to close the facility as alleged. He added that the department had also taken note of a letter concerning the postponement of referrals for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) cases at the hospital, which has also been widely circulated online. He also said the department is currently reviewing and finalising service arrangements within the O&G Department to ensure the continued delivery of effective and quality healthcare services to the public. “The latest status and further plans regarding the matter will be announced in the near future.” Mohtar said the department remains committed to ensuring that any service restructuring and human resource optimisation measures are implemented in a systematic and well-planned manner, without affecting hospital operations or patient care. – Bernama

He said to realise the aspiration, the state government was the only state administration to implement an integrated collaboration involving all higher education institutions and relevant agencies under the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC). The initiative, implemented by the state government, has helped ease daily expenses for many residents while strengthening the role of mosques as centres of welfare and community engagement. A check by Bernama at the Kampung Baru/Air Tawar Mosque found that 175 food packs comprising rice and side dishes are distributed every Friday, benefiting various segments of the community, including senior citizens and the asnaf group. Mosque chairman Mohamad Nazir Chan, 50, said the programme has received encouraging response since its introduction and has enabled assistance to reach those who need it most. He added that the initiative, inspired by Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail, has also encouraged more residents to attend mosque activities while fostering closer ties between the institution and the local community. “We were delighted to receive funding to implement the programme because we have seen firsthand the benefits it brings to residents. So far, the distribution process has run smoothly and the response has been very positive.” Mohamad Nazir, who has led the mosque’s management for the past three years, said Kampung Baru/Air Tawar comprises about 300 households, adding that the programme has indirectly strengthened ties between the mosque and residents. For Roslan, 67, the initiative has helped reduce daily living expenses, particularly for senior citizens and asnaf recipients such as himself. He added that he was grateful to receive the meals provided through the programme, which helped ease his financial burden. “At the very least, I can enjoy lunch without having to spend money.” Roslan, who suffers from gastritis, currently receives assistance from the Baitulmal and the Social Welfare Department, while earning an income through the sale of fertiliser. Jamil, 72, said the programme has greatly helped him and his 70-year-old wife. “Even one food pack is enough for the two of us to share because my wife is no longer strong enough to cook. The initiative may seem small, but it has a huge impact on senior citizens like us.” Meanwhile, Kampung Baru/Air Tawar Village Development and Security Committee o ‘Fresh graduates now able to earn RM4,000 and up according to skill level’ BATU PAHAT: Premium wages are now being offered to Johor youth, with fresh graduates able to earn salaries of RM4,000 and above, said Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. Danial Hakimi commented on a related post saying the programme reflected the concern shown by the royal institution and the state government towards public welfare. “ Alhamdulillah , it may seem simple to provide meals, but it means a great deal to those in need. The concern shown by the Regent of Johor and the state government truly benefits the people.” This year, the state government has allocated RM26.9 million for the programme at 538 mosques and surau throughout Johor. As of the first quarter of this year, the programme has been carried out at 5,660 mosques and surau statewide, involving an allocation of RM5.66 million. Of the total, RM1.13 million came from contributions by participating mosques and surau , further strengthening their role as one stop centres that balance religious obligations with community welfare. – Bernama
chairman Azmi Liman said the programme has contributed positively to the wellbeing of the community. He said the village has more than 2,000 residents, with an estimated 150 to 200 individuals categorised as living in hardcore poverty. “The programme not only helps those in need but also nurtures the culture of giving and strengthens the relationship between the mosque and the community. “We have also seen individuals and NGO come forward with contributions after witnessing the benefits enjoyed by residents.” Azmi said such initiatives complement the cash assistance received by the residents and help ensure the welfare of vulnerable groups remains protected. A review of social media posts found that many responded positively to the programme, describing it as a meaningful initiative.

Family of fatal crash victims mull civil suit DUNGUN: The family of four victims killed in a crash at Km27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam last Monday is considering filing a civil suit seeking compensation from the individual believed to have caused the crash. Fauziah Abdullah, 59, whose son Mohd Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36, daughter-in-law Nor Azlina Latif, 33, granddaughter Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10, and Nor Azlina’s mother Semek Mat Soh, 73 were killed, said the move is aimed at seeking justice. She said she has entrusted matters relating to the claim, including the appointment of a lawyer, to her children. “I am deeply saddened because I not only lost my only granddaughter but also three other family members in the blink of an eye due to another person’s negligence,” she said when met at her home in Taman Setia, Al Muktafi Billah Shah yesterday. Fauziah said her family would take some time to pursue the claim as they are still in shock and grieving over the tragedy. Meanwhile, Nur Airish Syifa’s father, Sidek Abd Hamid, 42, said he has yet to consult lawyers on pursuing a civil suit against those allegedly responsible for the crash. He said he and other family members would meet lawyers in the near future to discuss the matter. “What saddens us most is that the incident is believed to have been caused by illegal street racing.” In the crash, which occurred at about 1pm on June 1, Mohd Aiman and his wife Nor Azlina, along with Nor Azlina’s mother Semek and their niece Nur Airish Syifa, were killed. A 19-year-old youth who was driving a Mercedes-Benz A250 is suspected of driving recklessly and dangerously alongside a BMW 530e driven by his 22-year-old brother, who died while being rushed to the hospital. The crash is believed to have occurred when the elder driver lost control of the car before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with a Perodua Alza, a Toyota Vios, a Proton Wira and another Mercedes-Benz. – Bernama
felt my life was more important. So, I ran away.” Tan added that the same suspect was later linked to other similar cases involving several Chinese nationals in Malaysia, with total losses estimated at around RM40,000. He said he eventually worked with another victim to set a trap and managed to assist in bringing the suspect to Kajang police. Tan said he has, however, not recovered his money or the mobile phone left in the suspect’s vehicle. Association of Malaysian-Chinese Friendship and Mutual Aid secretary-general Datuk Goh Boon Keng said the association has received a growing number of complaints involving unlicensed currency exchange transactions carried out via social media platforms, particularly Xiaohongshu. “We have received many complaints involving similar cases. Most victims are Chinese nationals studying in Malaysia, including undergraduate, master’s and PhD students, who were seeking quick and convenient ways to exchange Chinese yuan into Malaysian ringgit.” Goh said currency exchange activities in Malaysia are strictly regulated and could only be conducted by licensed money changers. “Dealing with individuals offering such services on social media carries a high risk of fraud, with victims often left unable to recover their money.” He also called on police to conduct a thorough investigation and take firm action against those responsible. Also present was MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael T.S. Chong.
o Victims claim to have been duped by fraudster in currency exchange transactions involving popular Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu
KUALA LUMPUR: A Chinese student has alleged that an online scammer not only cheated her in a currency exchange deal but also demanded “special favours” in exchange for returning her money, in a case linked to an alleged money-changer scam targeting Chinese nationals in Malaysia. At a media conference at the MCA headquarters yesterday, the 21-year-old student, identified only as Zhou, said she came across an individual offering currency exchange services on Xiaohongshu, a popular Chinese social media platform, on May 10. She then agreed to exchange 1,564 RMB for RM1,000. However, after transferring the money through WeChat Pay, she claimed the suspect stopped responding to her messages and later demanded an additional RM100 “service fee” which she also paid through Touch ‘n Go, in the hope of recovering her funds. “He replied to me the next day and said his QR code had been blocked. He asked me to transfer another RM100 as a service fee, so I did.” Zhou said the suspect later sent her a screenshot purportedly showing that the Ű BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI newsdesk@thesundaily.com KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been advised to exercise caution when dealing with online domestic helper recruitment offers, following reports of a scam syndicate operating through social media platforms. At a media conference held yesterday by MCA Youth, its national deputy chief and Federal Territories Youth chief Mike Y.C. Chong said the syndicate advertised domestic helper services using convincing profiles and supporting documents, while claiming that no deposit was required. He said the syndicate is believed to be active on social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Instagram, primarily targeting Chinese users. “At least two victims have come forward after falling prey to the online scam involving domestic helper recruitment, with losses reported of up to RM5,900.” He added that after payments are made, no domestic helper is made available and the suspects subsequently disappear or block all communication. He said payments are directed to personal bank accounts instead of registered company accounts. Chong said they also provide forged documents, including passports, payslips, invoices and customer testimonials to further build credibility. “Instead of a deposit, victims were asked to pay three months’wages upfront, allegedly amounting to about RM6,300 at a ‘discounted’ monthly rate. “One victim said he became suspicious when he was refused a video call with the alleged domestic helper and was pressured to make full payment in advance but later ignored the scammer’s messages.” Chong said MCA would submit complaints to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for action to block the social media accounts involved.

6 Grape grower giving away free saplings
GUA MUSANG: Over the past two years, a Tasmanian grape grower in Taman Wangsa Mewangi here has been turning his harvest into a means of giving back by providing grapes and saplings free of charge to the community. Azizul Rahman Hamzah, 50, said nearly 100 visitors have come to his home to obtain grape saplings at no cost, in an effort to encourage more people to take up gardening. Azizul, who is a cook, said the public are also welcome to pick the grapes themselves, which are grown in his yard and now extend about 10m beyond the fence of his home. He said the idea of giving away the saplings for free came after realising that they are quite expensive on the market. “I bought a Tasmanian grape sapling measuring about 0.6m for RM90. Because of that, I decided to share my harvest with anyone o Kelantan resident aiming to encourage local community to try planting Tasmanian variety
evolving needs and expectations of consumers.“ Last year, ACO Beijing successfully organised the Taste of Malaysia Programme 2025, which featured a five-day online promotion through the Metro China app and a three-day offline promotion at the retailer’s flagship store in Beijing. The programme, involving 15 Malaysian companies and led by Metro China, generated sales of 51.49 million yuan (RM30.68 million), attracted 300,000 buyers and eight million visitors, received 2,500 enquiries and facilitated 250 business meetings. – Bernama Sharing his hopes, Azizul said he wants to see more locals take up grape cultivation so that it may become a new identity for the district. “I don’t mind sharing my blessings with the community. I hope more people will come to get the saplings so that we can grow grapes together and create an attractive landscape in Gua Musang.” community, Bernama reported. He said after seeing the success of several grape farmers in Rawang, Selangor, as well as in Bachok and Machang in Kelantan, he was motivated to try growing it at his home. He added that the results have proven Tasmanian grapes can thrive and bear fruit in Gua Musang, despite the common perception that they are only suitable for cooler climates. “Over the past two years, the grapevines have borne fruit throughout the year. The grapes take about two months to ripen, and I can harvest up to 20kg per season. “Many people think grapes can only be grown in cool or highland areas, but the climate in Gua Musang is also suitable.” Azizul said grapevines do not require complicated care, apart from sufficient sunlight and water supply, adding that the plants thrive with regular pruning and harvesting, and simple fertilisation methods.

COMMUNITY 7
K LANG: In a display of unity, compassion and community spirit, the Rotary Club of Klang Valley, together with the Multiple Sclerosis Society Malaysia (MSSM) and the Rotary Club of Klang Central, held a special project in conjunction with World Multiple Sclerosis Day The event on May 30, called “Ride for Hope 2026: Mobilising Awareness and Support for Multiple Sclerosis in Malaysia”, was supported by the Malaysian Medical Association and Malaysian Society of Neurosciences. “We are heartened by the overwhelming support shown through Ride for Hope 2026,” said MSSM president Rizal Aminuddin. “Multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis can be overwhelming and isolating. This community-driven initiative not only raises awareness, but also elevates understanding of the unpredictable disease, reinforcing hope for MS warriors, caregivers and their families. “Educating the community about MS is essential because it dispels myths, creates a supportive and inclusive environment for those affected to stay active in society.” Superbikers, Rotarians, NGOs and the public gathered to raise awareness about MS, a chronic autoimmune neurological disease affecting individuals and families. The participation by superbikers helped amplify awareness on MS and demonstrated how communities from different backgrounds can come together to create hope and positive impact for those in need.

“For many years, people living with MS in Malaysia have faced not only the challenges of the disease, but also a lack of awareness and understanding from society. “Every conversation started today is a step towards early diagnosis, stronger support systems and a more inclusive future for MS patients and their families,” said MSSM founder Padma Panikker. “Proactive education about the disease is vital, and stigma associated with MS must be eliminated by normalising the conversation and building resilient support networks,” added Rotary Club of Klang Valley organising chair Shanthi Thiruchelvam. The Ride for Hope reached its conclusion at Montfort Boys Town in Shah Alam. As of early 2026, an estimated 2.9 million people are living with multiple sclerosis worldwide, with rising prevalence rates over the past three decades.

Religious tourism mooted to strengthen economy of Bentong town
BENTONG: Religious tourism has significant potential to strengthen the position of Bentong as a tourism destination while contributing to local economic growth, according to Tourism Board deputy director Samuel T.H. Lee. He said the government continues to support Buddhist and other religious bodies in promoting tourism-related activities and events, recognising their role in attracting visitors and enriching the tourism offerings of the country. “Religious tourism presents substantial opportunities for future growth,” he said at the Wesak Day celebration organised by Kechara Forest Retreat here last Sunday. “It not only attracts visitors but also promotes cultural understanding and meaningful spiritual experiences.” He added that Kechara Forest Retreat is well-positioned to become a leading destination for spiritual and religious tourism in Malaysia. Through stronger collaboration among stakeholders and strategic tourism initiatives, he said Bentong could further enhance its appeal to both domestic and international visitors seeking faith-based and cultural experiences. The strong turnout at this year’s Wesak Day celebration reflects the growing interest in
religious tourism activities, he added. According to Lee, an estimated 80% to 90% of visitors travelled from outside Bentong. Event organisers estimated that approximately 2,500 people attended the celebration. Lee said attractions such as Kechara Forest Retreat have helped place Bentong on Malaysia’s tourism map, particularly as a destination for spiritual retreats and religious experiences, complementing the existing attractions of the district. Earlier, Kechara House Buddhist Association Malaysia vice-president Thong Jiunn Perng said the founder of the organisation, the late H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, had advocated universal tolerance, harmony and mutual respect, values that inspired this year’s Wesak theme, “Compassion for All”. In light of this, Kechara introduced its first-ever Wesak Day Pet Blessing, aimed at encouraging greater compassion towards animals and living beings. The celebration also featured a Green Market organised in collaboration with Veg-Hub, local vendors and entrepreneurs to promote sustainability, vegetarianism, mindful living and community engagement.

Fun walk promotes compassionate, mentally healthy community
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) recently organised the Pause & Pace 2026 fun walk aimed at promotong mental health awareness, emotional wellbeing and community support. The meaningful and engaging public initiative brought together individuals, families, corporate partners and the wider community in a safe and supportive environment. The occasion was meant to encourage and enable conversations surrounding mental health while promoting self-care, mindfulness and healthy lifestyles. Pause & Pace was held in collaboration with Hong Leong Assurance at Taman Tasik Danau Kota here on April 16. The event also featured various interactive booths and activities focused on mental wellbeing, including mental health screening, mindfulness-based activities and educational engagement sessions. More than a 3.6km walk, it offered a safe and welcoming space to slow down, reconnect and
prioritise wellbeing through mindfulness sessions, yoga and a financial resilience talk. In a Facebook post, MMHA described it as “an inspiring morning of movement, connection and mental health awareness.” “Every step taken reflected our shared commitment to creating a more compassionate and mentally healthy community,” it said. “Together, we paused, paced ourselves, and walked with purpose.” According to MMHA, there is a growing need for mental health literacy and support skills in the community to help support those experiencing mental health difficulties. The association is providing Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), which it says is a trained skill everyone should possess. MHFA is a skills-based early-intervention training programme, equipping individuals with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, connect and respond to mental health problems or crises.
