J ENNIFER KUPCHO made a hot start in firing a 5-under 66 for a one-shot lead in the first round of the US Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club yesterday. Kupcho, trying to reverse her US Open for
after victory in the Chevron Championship last month, found the going far less smooth on the way to a 2-over 73. Korda teed off on 10 and after an encouraging birdie at 11 made back to-back bogeys at 12 and 13, signal ling the start of a tough day. “I honestly just hit it really poorly off the tee,” said Korda, who finished tied for second behind Maja Stark in last year’s US Open. “Found myself in a lot of trouble on the wrong sides of a lot of these pins. “I just felt like I was grinding to make safe pars. It wasn’t a great day… I have honestly no idea where this came from,” added the American, who was joined on 2-over by second ranked Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand. Kim set the early pace with her 4 under 67. She opened with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th, and after her lone bogey of the day at the par three fourth she birdied the sixth, sev enth and eighth to climb a crowded leaderboard. Kim was relishing her first chance to play the “really famous” Riviera lay out, even though “every hole is put ting me to the test. “I played it quite solid today, so I’m very happy with that,” said Kim, who was one stroke clear of a group of five players tied for third on 68. They included fellow South Koreans Yoo Hyun-jo, Kang Min-ji and Yoon Ina, along with Japan’s Hinako Shibuno and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez. – AFP “I thought I did well between the ears today,” he said. “When I gave some back on 11 and 12, I could have probably let that round go. But just kind of hung in there.” Masters champion Rory McIlroy had to bounce back from an early double-bogey, putting his approach from the fairway in the water at the par-four third. The world No. 2 responded with birdies at the fifth, sixth and sev enth and added another at 14 before a closing bogey in a 1-under 71. “I felt like I played pretty well, for the most part,” McIlroy said. “Especially after making that dou ble on the third hole, to play the rest of the round in three-under was good. “It’s a tough course. You have to concentrate on every shot. The greens are very firm already, very fast. Get yourself above the hole, it’s very tricky. I would like to hit a few more fairways, give myself a few more chances from the short grass, but overall, not a bad score to build from.” World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending champion in the event hosted by Jack Nicklaus, got off to an even rockier start in his bid to become the first player to win the same event three years running since Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic from 2009 through 2011. Scheffler’s 1-over 73 included two bogeys and a double-bogey at the par-three 16th, where he was in the water off the tee. – AFP
which hosts the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational and will be the venue for Olympic golf at the 2028 Summer Games. The American finished with seven birdies and two bogeys and a one shot lead over South Korean Kim Sei young. “I was hitting the ball well today, also rolling the ball really well with the putter,” Kupcho said. “So seeing a lot of things fall definitely helped with the confidence with my putter.” Kupcho, vying for a second major title to go with her 2022 Chevron Championship, said she felt “at home” at Riviera, where her length off the tee is a distinct advantage. “It’s kind of a ball-striker’s para dise, just hit it down the fairway, hit it on the green, and make the putts,” she said. After applying that
tunes after mi ss ing the cut the past three years, opened with three straight birdies on the Los Angeles course,
formula so success fully she said it was “a little bit of a weight off my chest” after her recent lack of suc cess in the tour nament. “Barring some thing crazy doesn’t happen tomorrow, I’ll be playing on the weekend,” Kupcho said. World No. 1 Nelly Korda, chas ing her second straight major title

Open title defence at Shinnecock Hills in two weeks, fired six birdies in his 5-under 67 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, seizing his share of the lead with a birdie at 18 where he stuck his approach a foot from the pin. Clark rolled in a 45-foot eagle putt from the fringe at 15 and added five birdies in his 5-under round while Gerard had an eagle, eight birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. England’s Fleetwood, mean while, had five birdies without a bogey, his solid short game prov ing key in a round in which he hit only seven greens in regulation. “Scored,“ Fleetwood said of what he did well. “I got the most out of the round, totally. I got away with a couple of poor misses. “Hit the pin a couple of times when it was going past. But in gen eral I played OK. I just wasn’t a hun dred percent by any means with my ball control from the fairway with my irons. But still shot five under, so it couldn’t have been that bad,“ Fleetwood added. Spaun was delighted to get himself back atop the leaderboard after nearly letting his round get away with bogeys at the 11th and 12th.
