Kim set the early pace with her 4 under 67. She opened with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th, and after her lone bogey of the day at the par three fourth she birdied the sixth, sev enth and eighth to climb a crowded leaderboard. Kim was relishing her first chance to play the “really famous” Riviera lay out, even though “every hole is put ting me to the test. “I played it quite solid today, so I’m very happy with that,” said Kim, who was one stroke clear of a group of five players tied for third on 68. I would like to hit a few more fairways, give myself a few more chances from the short grass, but overall, not a bad score to build from.” World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending champion in the event hosted by Jack Nicklaus, got off to an even rockier start in his bid to become the first player to win the same event three years running since Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic from 2009 through 2011.
