Berjaya founder takes to skies in pilotless eVTOL during China visit
█ BY ANDREW SAGAYAM newsdesk@thesundaily.com
KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Group (BCorp) founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan flew as a passenger in the EH216-S, a pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Guangzhou, China recently. He has become the first Malaysian to experience a flight in the world’s first certified eVTOL aircraft. The milestone was featured in a video posted on Instagram by Berjaya Corporation yesterday, showing Tan inside the autonomous aircraft during the flight last Friday. He used his mobile phone to record the experience. Relating his experience and comparing the aircraft with a helicopter, Tan praised its comfort and relatively low noise level. “I think this is better than a helicopter,” he said in the video. “The noise wasn’t too bad, I didn’t use headphones.” Berjaya Corporation Berhad chairman Tunku Tun Aminah Sultan Ibrahim Ismail and Tan, who is also BCorp adviser, had led a delegation to the EHang’s headquarters in Guangzhou last week. The Malaysian delegation was warmly welcomed by EHang founder, chairman and CEO Hu Huazhi and EHang chief financial
BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he would wait for the complete report of the special task force investigating the management of Felda before making any official announcement. “The special task force has started work and I am waiting for the investigation to be completed, then we will announce it shortly. “(Its aspects include) all matters regarding management, improving management and, of course, identifying past problems, but what is important is current management and way forward,” he said after officiating at the Friendly Session with Felda Top Management and Managers at Tenera Hotel yesterday. Previously, the media had reported that the Special Task Force report on Felda was expected to be completed in a few months before being made public. Anwar said he would release the report to the public as soon as it is completed and asked the public to read it like the Royal Commission of Inquiry report on Tabung Haji. – Bernama ‘Announcement on probe after task force completes work’ It is uniquely designed as a pilotless air taxi, operated via a centralised command-and-control system rather than a human on board. officer Conor Yang. The delegation was also briefed and provided insights into EHang’s advanced air mobility technology platform, including its pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Ehang also introduced the delegation to the diverse applications, global airworthiness certification progress, technology research and development as well as the international business strategy of the advanced air mobility company. Later during the visit, Tan boarded the EHang EH216-S aircraft, experiencing firsthand its smart, safe and sustainable approach to personal air transport. The visit provided an insightful platform for both parties to exchange perspectives on the future of advanced air mobility. Developed by China’s EHang Corporation, the EH216-S is an autonomous air taxi designed to carry two passengers along preset routes using intelligent navigation and 16 independent rotors.

Don’t turn action against TH into racial, religious issue: PM
BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that efforts to address misconduct and management weaknesses in any institution should not be turned into a racial or religious issue. He said such action is taken based on the need to rectify shortcomings in the management of an organisation, regardless of the background or identity of the institution. Anwar said the approach also applied to action taken to address misconduct and management weaknesses at Tabung Haji, which he said should not be linked to the Islamic image associated with the institution. “There is also an Islamic party leader who said, ‘why are they always taking action against these Malay and Islamic agencies?’ The government takes action because they are under the government.
governance and affairs are conducted transparently and promptly, and that firm action be taken against those who have damaged Felda due to their greed.” Anwar said the success of an organisation or institution could easily be destroyed by rash and greedy actions if the principles of integrity are disregarded. Previously, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang claimed that the controversy surrounding TH had been deliberately exaggerated by certain parties simply because the financial institution carried an “Islamic brand”. The Marang MP said while his party did not deny the existence of shortcomings or misconduct in Islamic financial institutions, greater shortcomings at other institutions had not received the same level of attention.

values, Bernama reported. He said he was committed to ensuring that investigations into governance and affairs involving Felda are conducted transparently and promptly, in line with the decree of His Majesty the King of Malaysia Sultan Ibrahim. He said the matter was conveyed to him during an audience with the King, who also ordered that firm action be taken against those found to have damaged Felda. “When I had an audience with His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim asked me to ensure that investigations into Felda’s
“If we identify a problem we will take action, and we should not turn this into a racial or religious issue. We do not ask whether it is a Malay company or a government company.” He was speaking at the Prime Minister’s 2026 engagement session with Felda’s top management and managers yesterday. Anwar said Malays and Muslims should be more firm in ensuring that institutions that carry an Islamic image are properly managed, as such institutions should set an example in terms of management, ethics and
Anwar sends letter to Indonesian president over Felda investment issue BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had sent an official letter to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto seeking special attention to Felda’s investments in the country, particularly the issue involving PT Eagle High Plantations Tbk (EHP). He said the move was prompted by the potential for financial losses of up to RM2.5 billion stemming from decisions made by the previous management, with expected returns now likely to be only around RM200 million. “This investment is subject to court proceedings in Indonesia. I have written to President Prabowo Subianto asking him to look into the matter. If it is not addressed, we could potentially lose RM2.5 billion and recover only RM200 million.” According to news reports, Felda has yet to recover the money as EHP is still contesting it in the Indonesian courts. Anwar was speaking during a meet-and-greet session with Felda’s senior management and managers at Tenera Hotel in Bangi yesterday. Also present were Felda chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir and director-general Datuk Dr Suzana Idayu Wati Osman. Anwar said the disclosure of the financial crisis figures was intended to ensure that Felda’s management at all levels understood the scale of the challenges it faces in its recovery efforts. “I want the managers to understand how difficult the recovery will be. This is not a problem caused by the managers. What does a Felda manager in Pahang or Johor have to do with it? But we all have to bear the consequences, and that is the problem. So, they need to understand this. “Issues involving investigations, enforcement and the courts are separate matters. But I want the managers to understand the full extent of these problems. I told Suzana that they need to understand the situation. “What I want to emphasise is that all Felda managers must fully understand the issues. They should not become discouraged, but recognise that these problems must be tackled.” On broader recovery efforts, Anwar gave an assurance that the government is committed to accelerating basic welfare projects, including funding to repair the homes of managers and settlers, rather than waiting until next year’s budget. He also stressed that the emphasis on governance, integrity and accountability is not intended to find fault with any particular party but to safeguard public trust and ensure that Felda regains its standing as an institution the country can be proud of. – Bernama

3 MAHB welcomes pat-down screening
o Measure at airports provides additional deterrent alongside handheld metal detectors, says airport operator
It multi-agency arrangement would allow relevant authorities to carry out their responsibilities according to their respective expertise while enabling the airport operator to focus on its core mandate of ensuring safe, secure and efficient airport operations. On Thursday, Madani government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet had approved a comprehensive plan to strengthen controls at the country’s entry points with immediate action. Airport security came under scrutiny after several cases involving Malaysians, including the recent arrest of a Malaysian pilot with about 25kg of drugs at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia. said the
Immigration Command Centre and the joint Home Ministry-Transport Ministry Technical Committee would facilitate more coordinated implementation, the statement added. The approach also involves designated liaison officers from the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency, Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, Customs Department, Immigration Department, police as well as MAHB. MAHB said aviation security would continue to safeguard civil aviation operations against acts of unlawful interference or attempted threats that could jeopardise aviation and air transport safety, including passengers carrying firearms.
address a longstanding challenge in managing airport security, particularly when issues cut across the duties of multiple agencies. “For many years, national security matters have required us to respond to challenges that extend beyond the airport operator’s core mandate. This coordinated approach provides much-needed clarity on roles and responsibilities, ensuring that each agency can bring its respective authority and expertise to bear.” He said MAHB remains committed to working alongside the government and enforcement agencies to safeguard the country’s gateways, Bernama reported. The clearer division of roles and accountability among implementing agencies through the National
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has welcomed the resumption of targeted physical pat-down screening at Malaysian airports as part of the government’s move to strengthen security at entry points. The airport operator said in a statement that the measure, where warranted based on risk assessment, would provide an additional deterrent alongside handheld metal detectors.
In addition to the deployment of K9 units by police and the Customs Department, the move would complement existing functions of aviation security. MAHB is also enhancing existing security measures through the deployment of improved screening equipment at the KL International Airport and other regional airports. Its managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the coordinated approach would

As a quick-win measure, six actions will be prioritised to strengthen existing security controls, namely risk-based targeted screening by enhancing inspections of flights, passengers, crew members and luggage identified as a risk item. Another measure involves drug screening of flight personnel to strengthen the implementation of pre-employment, periodic and random screening of pilots, cabin crew and related staff. CAAM CEO Kapt Datuk Norazman Mahmud said in the same statement that the enhanced measures demonstrate the proactive approach of CAAM to addressing emerging risks and reinforcing safeguards in the aviation sector. “Safety-critical personnel carry a significant responsibility in ensuring the safety of every flight.” – Bernama
KAJANG: The Education Ministry will look into awarding merit points for participation in co-curricular activities, including sports, to students at prison institutions as consideration for university admission. Its minister Fadhlina Sidek said the move is important to ensure that such students have the opportunity to pursue higher education after completing the SPM and leaving the institutions. “The merit they earn can be taken into consideration for them to continue their studies at the next level,” she said when closing the 17th Hijrah Kasih Programme organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Prison Department on Thursday. She said the matter is among improvements being considered by the ministry to ensure that educational opportunities for students at prison institutions do not end after they complete their schooling. She added that the ministry would have discussions with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training division on the possibility of awarding certificates to students who undergo skills training while at prison institutions. She said the students acquire various skills, including sewing and food preparation, which could benefit them when they return to society. Fadhlina said students at schools in prisons had achieved a 100% pass rate in the SPM for two consecutive years, demonstrating that their circumstances do not prevent them from succeeding in education. “This is not about a lack of opportunity. It is not about the place or which school they attend but about their determination.” She said the ministry is also looking at ways to ensure that these students keep pace with developments in education outside, including through digital learning. Education deputy director-general (School Operations Sector) Datuk Zainal Abas said the ministry aims to have Physical, Sports and Co-curricular Assessment scores for students at prison schools recognised this year, enabling SPM candidates from 2027 to receive 10% merit when applying for university admission. He said the ministry is looking into providing teachers at integrity schools and Henry Gurney schools nationwide with access to the Delima (Digital Educational Learning Initiative Malaysia) platform, Bernama reported. He added that the ministry is also studying the possibility of providing controlled access to Delima for students at the institutions so that they could take part in online learning and access educational materials digitally, while ensuring that they have access to learning facilities comparable to those for other students.
CAAM said operators are required to undertake a comprehensive review of their Alcohol and Drug Testing Programme, conduct safety risk assessments relating to alcohol and drug abuse as well as submit declarations of compliance, testing results and corrective action plans to CAAM. “These requirements are supported by enhanced CAAM oversight through risk-based surveillance, unannounced inspections and focused audits on the implementation of alcohol and drug testing requirements. “CAAM will also verify testing records and may require additional testing where safety concerns are identified.” Earlier, the Cabinet had approved 17 recommendations to strengthen security
In a statement, CAAM said the measures were part of its continued commitment to safeguarding the safety, security and integrity of the civil aviation system. On Aug 7, it issued Safety Directive 02/2026 – Strengthening Fitness-for-Duty and Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Misuse to enhance requirements for flight crew and cabin crew performing safety-critical functions. “Among the immediate measures introduced, Malaysian airlines are required to conduct drug testing covering 100% of active flight crew and cabin crew members within the prescribed implementation period. “Operators are also required to increase unannounced random alcohol and drug

Google funds infrastructure for own data centre
Elmina facility to create wider job opportunities PETALING JAYA: Operating Google’s first Malaysian data centre will require far more than server technicians, with engineers, security personnel, maintenance crews and even cafeteria vendors expected to benefit from employment and business opportunities generated by its upcoming Elmina facility. In a recent interview, Siah said over 4,000 workers were typically employed during a data centre’s construction phase, which could last between three and five years. Once fully operational, a Google data centre would ordinarily employ hundreds of people in permanent roles, he said, challenging the perception that such facilities were largely empty buildings requiring little manpower. “There is a misconception that data centres do not create jobs, or that they create very few jobs – that a data centre is an empty building with very few people inside. “But our data centres are not built to be rented out. We have our own products and services, so we need the data centre for ourselves, and this requires a highly specialised workforce,”he told theSun . Siah said the facilities functioned as the “engine room” behind online searches, email, video streaming and digital payments, processing requests from billions of users simultaneously. He added that artificial intelligence required greater computing capacity and expanded the role of data centres beyond storing and retrieving information. He likened conventional data-centre services to a “digital library”, with AI serving as a personal librarian capable of searching for and interpreting information on behalf of users. “You have a personal ‘digital librarian’ who understands your context, where you are and what you are looking for, and is able to go through billions of information sources to produce something that is most relevant to you.” He said a data centre’s operational workforce included server technicians responsible for installing and troubleshooting equipment, network engineers maintaining connectivity and mechanical engineers managing cooling systems. Electrical engineers were also required to ensure a reliable power supply around the clock, while other roles covered procurement, supply chains, clean energy, water management, environmental health and safety, and community affairs. Employment generated by the facility would also extend to workers whose roles were not traditionally associated with data centres. Google facilities generally included cafeterias because they were often located away from major towns and needed to provide meals for their workforce, creating opportunities for local food vendors and kitchen workers. “We need to hire food vendors because our data centres usually have a cafeteria. Given the size of our workforce, it is not reasonable to ask employees to find their own food during lunchtime. “That is another job opportunity.” Siah said Google generally found that each job created within one of its data centres supported nine additional jobs in the surrounding community through contracts and wider business activity. He added that these opportunities included construction and consultancy services, transport, security, waste management, equipment procurement, maintenance and fuel deliveries. “When I say‘supported’, I mean that the existence of the data centre creates business. “It signs contracts with other entities in the country or surrounding area to provide the goods and services it needs. “The additional demand generated through these business contracts creates jobs to fulfil them.” Siah said the economic benefits were intended to continue beyond the construction phase, as Google developed data centres to operate its own services rather than lease space to external operators. – by Faiz Ruzman
o Cost of transmission lines and substation for facility at Elmina Business Park in Selangor will not be passed on to Malaysians
█ BY FAIZ RUZMAN newsdesk@thesundaily.com
PETALING JAYA: Google is making good on its pledge not to pass the infrastructure costs of its Malaysian expansion to surrounding communities, funding the transmission lines and substation required to power its first data centre in the country. Google Asia-Pacific principal for global infrastructure Ken Siah (pic) said the company was financing electricity transmission lines connecting its Selangor facility to the national grid as well as the development of a substation at Elmina Business Park. “We take our philosophy that we will finance our own local infrastructure upgrades very seriously. As far as possible, we do not want the costs to be passed on to the local community or residents,” he told theSun in an interview. Google will also pay the electricity bill for the data centre in full without seeking subsidies and would be subject to Malaysia’s new electricity tariff for data centres. “We pay 100% of our power bill. We do not ask for subsidies. There is a new data-centre

other major projects on the island. “The development is expected to transform Labuan’s tourism landscape by creating new attractions while generating fresh economic opportunities and spillover benefits for the local community and business sector,” he said. He added that securing government support and providing the relevant ministries and agencies with a clear understanding of the project’s requirements would be crucial to turning the proposal into reality. the local community.” At Elmina, water used for evaporative cooling will be continuously recirculated. Although evaporated water eventually returns to the water cycle, Google will still classify it as consumed when calculating its water-replenishment commitments. “For every drop of freshwater we take, we will replenish that amount plus 20%.” Google’s first water-replenishment initiative in Malaysia is being undertaken with the Global Environment Centre and the Petaling Jaya City Council to restore the lake at Taman Aman, including increasing the flow of freshwater into it. Siah said the volume restored through such projects would be scientifically measured and independently verified. On renewable energy, Google has entered into 21-year power purchase agreements with consortia led by Shizen Energy and TotalEnergies for 50MW of new solar capacity in Malaysia. The agreements support Google’s global target of operating entirely on carbon-free energy around the clock by 2030. “We do not want to use clean energy that is already available. We want clean energy that is new to the grid and would not have been developed without our purchase. “We will continue looking for opportunities to create new clean-energy generation that will ultimately feed into the grid and increase the energy supply available to everyone.”

This may involve transmission lines or substations.” The facility remains under construction following Google’s announcement in 2024 of a US$2 billion (RM8.09 billion) investment in Malaysia. their power efficiency at the design stage, but when the facility is actually running, it may be much worse. What they claim at the design stage may not be (reflected) by the reality of the situation.” He said Google would publish Elmina’s annual water consumption once the data centre was operating at scale, in line with its disclosure practices for other facilities. According to Siah, the Elmina site underwent a water-risk assessment using up to 100 years of historical data. The assessment
concluded that the facility could use water without placing local water resources under stress. “If the assessment finds a water risk, and the water use of the data centre could create an issue, we will not use water. “We will find other cooling methods. There are many data centres around the world where we have made that decision because it is the responsible thing to do for
Siah said Google assessed whether a location had sufficient power capacity before committing to it. If its requirements risked affecting the surrounding community, the company would either develop additional capacity or select another site. On water consumption, Siah said Google preferred to publish verified operational data instead of estimates produced during the

Singaporean jailed 14 days for insulting Islam JOHOR BAHRU: A Singaporean security guard was sentenced to 14 days in prison and fined RM7,000 (three months’ jail in default) by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to insulting Islam last month. Magistrate A. Shaarmini ordered Mohamed Anim Atam, 56, to serve the jail term from the date of his arrest last Tuesday. He was charged with deliberately hurting the religious feelings of another person by uttering words insulting Islam, which were overheard by a man. The offence was committed between Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Meldrum here at about 5pm on July 30. He was charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine, or both. According to the facts of the case, the accused allegedly made insulting remarks about the Quran and Islam while travelling in an e-hailing vehicle. The complainant, who overheard the remarks, subsequently uploaded a video recording of the incident to several social media accounts before lodging a police report on July 31. DPP Eizlan Azhar urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, noting that the case involved 3R issues. Mohamed Anim, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence citing ongoing divorce proceedings, which required his attendance at the Syariah Court in Singapore. PUTRAJAYA: A former Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) CEO has been remanded for seven days to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into the misappropriation of TH investment funds and shares worth approximately RM190 million, following revelations in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH. Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah issued the remand order, effective yesterday until next Thursday, following an application by MACC at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. The man, who is in his 60s, was among the most senior figures to have held a top management position at TH. MACC had previously detained and recorded statements from Department has busted a syndicate believed to be involved in online scams, including love scams and the sale of counterfeit goods, with 21 people arrested in an operation at the KL International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 and Nilai in Negeri Sembilan on Wednesday. Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said in a statement yesterday the syndicate, believed to have been operating since early this year, used a luxury residence in a secluded area of a housing estate in Nilai as its operations centre and is believed to have made up to US$50,000 (RM210,000). Operations Force (GOF) cracked down on illegal sand mining activities after raiding seven separate locations in three states through Op Gali Mega, with a total seizure value estimated at RM13.26 million. GOF Central Brigade commander SAC Hakemal Hawari said the operation began at 11am on Wednesday, covering the areas of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.
He said the operation initially resulted in the arrest of a local man believed to be a syndicate member and two Chinese nationals, a man and a woman aged 50 and 53 at KLIA. “Preliminary investigations found that the syndicate facilitated the entry of foreign nationals into Malaysia, targeting Chinese nationals believed to have been blacklisted by the Immigration Department. “The blacklisted suspects are believed to have possessed two Chinese passports with different passport numbers. The Chinese passport that the Immigration Department did not blacklist was used to pass through the e-Gate at KLIA,” he said, adding that He said a total of 31 individuals were checked in the operation, with 15 of them arrested for various offences. Hakemal said the latest raid at 3.30pm on Thursday targeted an illegal operation site covering an area of 0.647ha at Lot PT 89, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang Lama, which is believed to be processing sand without approval. He said the operation was carried out in an integrated manner with the seven individuals to assist in the investigation. The seven are a former CEO of a shipping company, a construction company director, a former company director and four former senior TH management staff. The RCI report on TH, uploaded to the Islamic Development Malaysia Department official portal on July 29, recommended, among other things, a forensic audit into past investment decisions that contributed to a significant decline in the asset value of the institution, Bernama reported. The 211-page report, which examined TH’s management and operational issues from 2014 to 2020, also identified several problematic investments for further forensic audit.

We started a week ago by putting up Jalur Gemilang around the area, and this marks the highlight of the celebrations, with the installation of this giant wau . “We chose the wau as a symbol because it is one of the country’s traditional pastimes. “As for the combination of the two flags, the Jalur Gemilang represents Malaysia, and since we are in Kedah, we decided to combine the two,” he said when met on Thursday. Azhar said work on the giant wau involved sewing the flags onto a framework made of bamboo, wood and piping, as well as balancing the structure to ensure it could be safely erected at the designated site. He said between 15 and 20 residents of various ages took part in the project, strengthening bonds of friendship and the spirit of unity within the local KRT community. “Throughout the project, many children stopped to watch, especially when they saw the giant wau adorned with the Jalur Gemilang and Kedah state flag. “We are confident it can attract the young generation and help instil the spirit of patriotism in them,” he said. He added that the project was carried out in response to a call by the Kedah Department of National Unity and Integration, which promotes various national-themed programmes to strengthen unity and patriotism among the community. – Bernama
BERA: The use of drones to transport medical samples between hospitals could help improve the efficiency of healthcare logistics, particularly by reducing delivery time, said Pahang Public Works, Transport and Health Committee chairman Datuk Razali Kasim. He said the initiative was carried out under a Proof of Concept (POC) project by Alphaswift Industries Sdn Bhd, involving drone deliveries between Bera Hospital and Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh. “Tests found that drone delivery could save about 20 minutes compared with land transport over a distance of about 20km. Various aspects were also evaluated during the POC, including delivery time, sample quality, test result accuracy and logistics, to compare air and land delivery methods,” he said after the Medical Drone Delivery Project Recognition Ceremony at Bera Hospital on Thursday, Bernama reported. Razali said drone technology also offer advantages during natural disasters, traffic congestion or road disruptions, as deliveries by air could continue despite such conditions. He said the initiative, which was still in the testing stage, was carried out in several phases, beginning with a drop test on Dec 11 last year, followed by flight and delivery tests on Jan 22 and a medical drone crash response exercise on Feb 11 to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the system. However, Razali said the official use of drones to deliver medical samples by the Health Ministry required further study, including on cost-effectiveness, regulatory requirements o Initiative saves delivery time compared with land transport and offers advantage during natural disasters or road disruptions, says Pahang exco

Alphaswift Industries said in a statement the project was the first of its kind in Malaysia to transport blood samples between two hospitals, highlighting the potential of the technology to improve healthcare logistics. “The project, carried out in collaboration with the ministry, is an important step towards exploring the use of new technology to support healthcare delivery, particularly the transport of medical materials.”
and funding. He said further studies should take into account the cost of land delivery, including the use of vehicles, drivers and fuel, to provide a more comprehensive cost comparison. Razali said the next test would be conducted in Tawau, Sabah, while other locations in Pahang and other states could be considered based on logistical suitability and local conditions.

Perkeso introduces MYFutureJobs Ambassadors o Initiative to help foster early, comprehensive career awareness among higher education students
KOTA KINABALU: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) has rolled out two major initiatives aimed at breathing new life into the downtown area, combining modern aesthetic upgrades with vibrant night-time economic activities. Its president Datuk Walter Kenson announced that MPS has approved a comprehensive policy encouraging premises across the district to replace conventional signboards with LED, lightbox, neon or 3D billboards. The initiative, which takes immediate effect with no expiry date, waives all previous fees for installing or converting to illuminated signage. To encourage participation, the council has also removed size restrictions on signboards – including permitting entire building walls to be used for LED displays – subject to technical approval and the submission of engineering drawings for safety verification. “The joint initiative with the business community aims to revive Sandakan’s past image as ‘Little Hong Kong’,“ said Kenson after chairing a licensing committee meeting at MPS last Monday. The council is targeting at least two premises in every building block to install illuminated signboards, with the initiative extending beyond commercial premises to private offices, government agencies, hotels and the industrial and tourism sectors across the district up to Sepilok. In a complementary move to boost night time vibrancy, Kenson also launched the Car Boot Sale Night Market programme at Lorong Harbour Square, next to The Elopura Hotel, on Aug 15. The weekly event, organised by the Sandakan Documentary and Film Association, will run every Saturday from 4pm to midnight starting Sept 5 with 20 lots available for traders. “This programme provides local traders and youths with opportunities to explore a more relaxed, creative and flexible business concept. It also allows youths to generate additional income by using their existing vehicles to sell goods and products.” Kenson described the Car Boot Sale as a “new experiment” aimed at restoring the vibrancy of the city centre not only during festive seasons but throughout the year. He expressed hope that the initiative would attract more visitors, including tourists from outside the district. Also present at the launch were association chairman Datuk Md Afendi Hamdan, Kenson’s wife Datin Ivy Wong, Sandakan Immigration Department chief Tajul Aripin Mohammed Mokhtar, and a representative from Ormond Hotel. KUCHING: Sarawak is expanding community based HIV services beyond Kuching to Miri and Bintulu as part of broader efforts to improve access to healthcare and support across the state. The state, under the leadership of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, has prioritised equitable access to healthcare, stronger social resilience and improved quality of life under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, alongside economic transformation. At the centre of this effort is Teratak Kasih Tok Nan (TKTN), a community-based initiative providing holistic support to people living with HIV, their families and other vulnerable communities. It offers temporary accommodation, counselling, treatment support, psychosocial services, welfare assistance and community outreach. It addresses not only healthcare needs, but also the social and economic challenges that can limit access to and continuity of treatment. Last year, the Sarawak government announced a three-year allocation of RM2.25 million to strengthen TKTN and support its expansion. “Sarawak’s development agenda has always centred on improving the quality of life of our T HE Human Resources Ministry, through the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso), recently introduced MYFutureJobs Ambassadors from among higher education institution students.
