Neutrality brings economic benefits: Anwar BATU KAWAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s commitment to engaging all countries while maintaining its independence and neutrality has strengthened international confidence in the nation and created new opportunities for economic cooperation. He said the approach had enabled Malaysia to foster strong relations with countries across different geopolitical blocs, resulting in tangible economic benefits, including Petronas’s latest agreement in Turkmenistan. “We did (engagement) with the United States President Donald Trump who was here last year, a significant visit. And then we had one with China, India and recently with Russia, showing our centrality – the position that Malaysia takes is to make sure that we engage with all countries and maintain our independence and neutrality. “We express our position in some of the more contentious issues affecting the world but we welcome the participation of all,” he said at the grand opening ceremony of the MKS Super Centre factory in Bandar Cassia Technology Park yesterday. He said Turkmenistan had agreed to award Petronas the development of two major gas blocks, reflecting the confidence foreign governments have in Malaysia’s capabilities, stability and professionalism. He added that the agreement with Turkmenistan was a direct outcome of Malaysia’s efforts to build meaningful relationships with countries around the world. Pointing to continued investments from major global companies in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, Anwar said international investors’ confidence is critical to Malaysia’s economic growth and future progress. He said Penang’s success in attracting high-quality investments shows that clear policies, efficient administration and reduced bureaucracy could strengthen Malaysia’s competitiveness. Anwar said the country must continue investing in talent development, education and industry collaboration to support emerging sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. He said Malaysia’s future competitiveness would depend not on low costs but on the sophistication of its industrial capabilities and the depth of its talent pool. ASHGABAT (TURKMENISTAN): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the success of Petronas in securing one of the world’s largest gas fields, following an agreement signed with Turkmenistan, as an extraordinary achievement that positions the national oil and gas company among industry leaders. He said the success also alleviates concerns over domestic gas supply shortages while enhancing the company’s ability to continue exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries such as Japan, South Korea and China. Anwar said his visit to Turkmenistan, made at the invitation of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, was a reciprocal visit following the latter’s trip to Malaysia in December 2024. “What was interesting in 2024 was that when Petronas informed me of the need to urge President Serdar to recognise Petronas’s role as a key pillar in the expansion of Turkmenistan’s oil and gas industry, he (Berdimuhamedov) appeared to provide strong assurances at that time. “Petronas’s track record as a highly respected operator and manager of oil companies, along with the various proposals the company offered to the host country such as technology transfer opportunities, training exposure including at Universiti Petronas and the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry, attracted the president’s attention. “This led him to accept the proposal more readily,” he told the Malaysian media before concluding his two-day official visit to the country, which began on Thursday. Second parliament meeting begins tomorrow KUALA LUMPUR: The Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will begin tomorrow, with several key Bills set to take centre stage, including the re-tabling of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, which seeks to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years. The meeting, which runs until July 16, is also scheduled to include the re-tabling of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No. 2) 2026, which proposes to separate the roles of the attorney general and the public prosecutor. Both Bills were previously tabled during the First Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament. However, the Bill on the prime minister’s term limit did not secure a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, while the Bill seeking to separate the roles of the attorney general and the public prosecutor has been referred to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee for further scrutiny. Attention is also expected to turn to the Cybercrime Bill 2026 as well as the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment) Bill, which is scheduled to be tabled on the first day of the meeting and debated the following day. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposed amendments, covering 11 areas and 42 clauses, are aimed at addressing illegal racing activities, which continue to pose a serious threat to road user safety. “The amendments also include tougher measures to curb the activities of “tonto” syndicates, as well as efforts to strengthen enforcement mechanisms to enhance road safety and ensure more effective compliance with the law.” The 16-day meeting is also expected to focus on discussions on various issues, particularly the impact of the global energy supply crisis on Malaysia following the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has affected international energy supply chains. Meanwhile, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has reminded all MPs to discharge their responsibilities as public representatives and to conduct proceedings through orderly and mature debate in accordance with the Standing Orders, despite the current political dynamics. He added that both government and opposition MPs must carry out their respective roles by focusing on issues of public and national interest, while ensuring high-quality debates to strengthen democracy and contribute to better policy formulation. “The Dewan Rakyat is the highest legislative institution in the country. Alhamdulillah , its scale is no less impressive than in previous years. In fact, from what I have seen today, it is even more lively,” he told reporters after launching the Road to Maha 2026 Central Zone programme yesterday. Mohamad said international participation at this year’s event is set to grow, with countries including China, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Hungary and Uzbekistan confirming their involvement for the first time on such a scale, adding that it was a reflection of how interconnected global food security has become. “This is one of the first times we are seeing such extensive international participation because food security is an issue that no country could solve alone. Almost RM100 million for traders MALACCA: The Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry has approved nearly RM100 million in financing for more than 4,300 entrepreneurs in Malacca as of May 31, further strengthening the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in the state. It said the financing reflects its continued commitment to ensuring that more entrepreneurs have access to capital to expand their businesses and stimulate the local economy. Its minister Steven Sim said financing must continue to be channelled to entrepreneurs to enable more businesses to grow and create employment opportunities. “Through financing, we are supporting Malaysian businesses. “When businesses grow, the benefits are felt not only by business owners, but also by employees, suppliers and local communities. “The funds channelled to entrepreneurs will continue to circulate within the national economy. That is why we want to see more financing reach the market and help strengthen Malaysian businesses.” Sim is currently on a three-day working visit to Malacca until today, in conjunction with the Hebatkan Perniagaan Malaysia Carnival, aimed at engaging with entrepreneurs and local traders as well as reviewing the implementation of various initiatives under the ministry. The recipients represented various sectors, including food and beverages, wholesale, professional services, construction contracting, retail, online businesses, automotive and other services. – Bernama Diesel train use in Johor temporary: Loke JOHOR BAHRU: The use of diesel trains for the Southern Shuttle service is a temporary measure while waiting for new Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains to arrive, ensuring local residents face no further delays, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the ministry has allocated an annual subsidy of RM11 million to RM15 million to enable more individuals to benefit from rail-based public transport. “Therefore, we have two options, either to wait two to three years for 10 new EMU train sets to be completed or to use the existing trains now so that the people of Johor do not have to wait longer. “The new EMU trains will arrive in due time. However, if the public can already use the service now, there is no need to wait.” He added that diesel trains would no longer be needed upon completion of the Gemas-Johor Bahru electrified double tracking project, as they would be replaced by the Electric Train Service on the route. The service linking Kulai, JB Sentral and Pasir Gudang offers a faster, more comfortable travel option, with the Kulai-JB Sentral journey taking about 40 minutes and the Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang journey about 40 to 45 minutes. He also said the Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang route, previously reserved for freight services, has now been opened to passengers for the first time. – Bernama

Greed, easy money fuel scam losses

KOTA BHARU: Greed and the desire for quick profits have been identified as among the main reasons many people in Kelantan fall victim to investment scams, resulting in losses of RM5.18 million in the first five months of this year. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said investment scams accounted for the highest financial losses among all commercial crime categories, with some victims losing more than RM1 million each. He said victims often continued depositing money into fraudulent investment schemes after being lured by promises of lucrative returns, only realising they had been deceived after suffering losses running into hundreds of thousands of ringgit. “Investment scams account for the highest losses. Some victims in Kelantan have lost more than RM1 million. “Many continue making payments because they believe they will receive the promised returns, only realising they have been scammed after losing hundreds of thousands of ringgit or even more than RM1 million,” he told Bernama. Mohd Yusoff said scam syndicates typically lure victims with promises of unrealistic returns that legitimate financial institutions would be unable to offer. He urged the public to think carefully before committing to any investment, particularly those promising exceptionally high returns within a short period. Meanwhile, commercial crime in Kelantan continued to trend upwards, with 1,219 investigation papers opened between January and May, compared with 602 during the corresponding period last year. The increase involved 617 additional cases, while total losses rose from RM14.11 million to RM20.84 million, an increase of RM6.73 million. According to Mohd Yusoff, e-commerce scams recorded the highest number of cases at 401, compared with 141 during the same period last year. ‘No evidence of bullying in death of student’ REMBAU: No evidence of bullying has been found in the case involving a Form Four student who died at a secondary school in Seremban. Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the 16-year-old had reportedly been in good health and had shown no unusual signs before the incident. “Based on my conversation with the deceased’s parents earlier, there has been no indication of bullying or any similar issue. According to the information we received, she was well and behaving as usual when she arrived at school. “However, the state education department and the school have been instructed to conduct a thorough review to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this stage, there is no information suggesting that the student had any pre-existing medical condition,” he said after visiting the student’s family at the Forensic Unit of Rembau Hospital on Friday. – Bernama

Mohd Zaidi said preliminary investigations found that the vehicles driven by Mohamad Zekry and Azaharuddin were travelling from Segamat towards Kuantan when the incident occurred. “Upon reaching the scene, a pickup truck travelling from Kuantan towards Muadzam Shah is believed to have attempted to overtake a lorry before hitting a puddle and losing control. “The vehicle then swerved into the opposite lane and collided with the two vehicles,” he said in a statement. Mohd Zaidi said three members of Mohamad Zekry’s family – his wife, mother in-law and father-in-law – were injured in the crash. Also injured were Azaharuddin’s wife and son, who were travelling in a multi purpose vehicle, as well as the 31-year-old pickup truck driver. All injured individuals were sent to the Pekan Hospital for treatment. “The bodies of the victims have also been sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem,” he added. KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 111 investors have filed a lawsuit against an investment company and two of its directors, alleging that they failed to return investment capital amounting to RM20.5 million. The investors, aged between 28 and 89, filed the suit at the High Court on April 3 through Messrs Azri & Co, naming QEW Group Berhad and its directors Datuk Dr Muhamad Iqbal Mohamad and Mohd Fairoz Muhammed as the first, second and third defendants. According to the statement of claim, the plaintiffs allege that between 2022 and 2024, they were persuaded by the defendants to invest in the RPS-i Investment Scheme, which was offered, promoted, marketed and managed by the company, Bernama reported. They claimed that before joining the scheme, QEW – through its representatives Muhamad Iqbal and Mohd Fairoz – made material representations regarding the scheme’s structure, dividend payment mechanism, capital protection and compliance with Syariah principles.

The plaintiffs further alleged that the defendants represented, either expressly or implicitly, that the scheme was secure, Syariah-compliant and capable of generating consistent monthly dividends, while assuring investors that their capital would remain protected. According to the claim, dividend payments were initially made as promised. However, the plaintiffs alleged that QEW later defaulted on its obligations when dividend payments were delayed, reduced and eventually stopped altogether. “When questioned over the failure to make dividend payments, the defendants stated that such payments were subject to the company’s absolute discretion, an explanation that was never reasonably disclosed or emphasised as a key risk when the investment was offered,” the plaintiffs alleged. InsPeK director Dr Ahmad Fahme Mohd Ali said the UMK@ Pondok preneur initiative was implemented under the Lembah Barakah Programme: Social Enterprise Hub for Downstream Product Processing and funded through the Higher Education Ministry’s 2023 Translational Grant in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He said the programme combines human capital development, technology transfer, social innovation and community income generation within a single entrepreneurial ecosystem. “The role of InsPeK as a social architect in this programme reflects the university’s continued commitment to making knowledge transfer and social innovation central to its contributions to society,” he told Bernama recently. Vietnamese duo held for importing spoilt chicken feet PHNOM PENH: Vietnamese police charged two women in Hanoi for importing about 10,000 tonnes of contaminated chicken feet worth US$13 million (RM54 million) from countries with poultry diseases and distributing them to local shops. three years, reported Vietnam News.
