MALAYSIA’S S. Sivasangari produced a superb display of resilience to defeat Egypt’s top seed Amina Orfi yesterday, becoming the first Malaysian woman to reach the PSA Squash Tour Finals championship match since 2012. The fourth-seeded Sivasangari battled for 74 grueling minutes to edge the reigning world champion 8-11, 11-10, 11-8, 11-10 in a high-stakes semifinal clash in Paris. “She’s furi ous, determined and she doesn’t give away anything,” Sivasangari said of her teenage opponent. “I tried to stay positive and as con sistent as I can … I made the right decisions in the crucial moments.” The victory marks a major milestone for Malaysian squash, repli cating the feat of eight-time world champion Datuk Nicol David, who last reached the sea son-ending tournament’s final 14 years ago. Sivasangari’s triumph completes a remarkable redemption arc after she failed to win a single match at the previous edition of the Tour Finals. Under the tournament’s sudden-death format, Sivasangari twice held her nerve at 10 10 in the second and fourth games to secure the crucial points. Standing between the world No. 7 and the prestigious title is Egypt’s sec ond seed Hania El Hammamy, who advanced from the other semifinal. – Bernama/Agencies
