‘King vital pillar of unity, stability’ KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not only a symbol of the nation’s sovereignty but also a guardian who protects its citizens, safeguards religion and is the mainstay of the country’s stability. In conjunction with the official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on June 1, the Friday sermon specially reminded all Muslims to uphold proper conduct towards the King and all national leaders and warned against the abuse of freedom of speech on social media. “Indeed, religious and royal institutions form the key foundations that preserve the nation’s sovereignty, the people’s unity and the sanctity of the religion of Islam in this blessed nation. The Rulers are not mere symbols of government but also protect the religion, peace and harmony of the society. “Therefore, preserve decency and respect for the Rulers, leaders and the nation’s institutions with ethical words and moral actions.” The sermon entitled Dirgahayu Tuanku: Amanah Raja, Tanggungjawab Rakyat, prepared by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department, was read out by Imam II Hassan Alfadhli Abdul Rahman and broadcast live from Masjid Negara during Friday prayers. The sermon also reminded Muslims that the well-being of a nation could not only be achieved through the strength of the leadership but also the efforts of its citizens. Muslims were reminded that a nation’s destruction does not only result from external threats but usually starts with internal fracture and disrespect of the nation’s identity. “When trust is disregarded, when morals are discarded, when fractures are ignored, those are the signals of the beginning of a nation’s destruction,” the sermon read. It also reminded Muslims to protect the values of civility and courteousness as a strong shield that preserves the sanctity of the religion, race and beloved nation. “Today, let us manifest our love and allegiance by proclaiming Dirgahayu Tuanku .” – Bernama

should not be measured solely by technological advancement, artificial intelligence (AI) or semiconductor industry investments. Anwar said the true strength of a Madani nation lies in its culture of knowledge, human values and reading practices “All countries talk about digitalisation, about AI, about what is called new technology. But there is something that should concern us. We do not want to become people who are merely intelligent in specific fields. “We want human beings who are first and foremost elevated as human beings, the beauty of human values.” He said technological and economic development must progress in tandem with the strengthening of values, ethics and human principles. Anwar said the government is indeed placing strong emphasis on the digitalisation agenda, technological transformation and the development of new industries as these sectors are key drivers of the nation’s economic growth and have successfully attracted foreign investment into Malaysia. He cautioned that material progress without the development of a culture of knowledge would cause society to lose its civilisational foundations.

o ‘Students under Education and Higher Education ministries to keep receiving RM100 each for book purchases to strengthen reading culture’

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that all students under the Education Ministry and the Higher Education Ministry will continue to receive RM100 each for book purchases under the Madani Book Voucher initiative. Speaking at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2026 yesterday, Anwar said the initiative is part of the government’s continued commitment to strengthening a reading culture and ensuring that education remains a national priority. “This culture of reading has become a challenge in the modern world where many have lost interest in reading and rely on social media. “This is dangerous and does not constitute education or a culture of knowledge.” Anwar added that while the government is managing fiscal constraints, funding for education and knowledge development would not be compromised as reading is a key pillar in building a civilised and knowledge-based society. He urged parents and educators to actively encourage children to read, Ű BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI newsdesk@thesundaily.com

stressing that books should not merely be purchased and stored but read and engaged with regularly as part of daily learning habits. “Every Friday I go to the mosque and meet children. I often ask: how are school toilets, how are schools functioning and most importantly, have you read a book today? Tonight will you read a book? Half an hour or one hour? And they often agree. “If parents at home monitor and encourage this, imagine a generation that reads daily over the next 10 years. That, to me, is the advantage of a Madani nation – not only external progress but also intellectual depth.” Anwar said the book fair should not be seen as a mere festival but also as a platform that brings together scholars, writers and intellectuals to reflect, absorb and deepen knowledge. “Otherwise, it risks becoming just another festival. Malaysia already has many festivals but this book fair is different. It brings us closer to the importance of knowledge.” He warned that while society is increasingly exposed to vast amounts of information through social media, not all information constitutes knowledge. He stressed that Malaysia’s aspiration to become a developed and civilised nation

Anwar also urged parents and educators to ensure that children read beneficial materials across disciplines including religion, philosophy, science, technology and AI, adding that poor selection of reading materials could negatively influence values and character. he said the role of journalists goes beyond merely recording events and serves as a vital voice in upholding truth when society is faced with confusion and speculation. He said every report requires scrutiny, verification and a strong sense of responsibility. He added that public trust is not easily earned but built on honesty, transparency and consistent commitment. “When integrity is upheld as a guiding principle and truth is placed as the highest priority, journalists will continue to stand as a bulwark of credible information. “Ultimately, journalism is not only about reporting the news but also about preserving trust and safeguarding credibility,” Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the media plays a vital role in shaping an informed and mature society while also strengthening unity and the values of Malaysia Madani. He said through writing, visuals, photography and various communication platforms, media practitioners serve as an important bridge between the people and the nation. reporting is crucial amid information overload and borderless news dissemination to ensure that facts are conveyed accurately, ethically and without affecting social harmony, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In conjunction with National Journalists’ Day yesterday, he said the media’s role extends beyond the mere dissemination of news, stressing that it carries a profound responsibility to uphold truth with integrity, credibility, courage and accountability. “National Journalists’ Day is being observed today as a tribute to journalists and media practitioners who have long served as the voice of the people and as one of the key pillars in strengthening the nation’s democracy. “The role of the media is not only to report news but also shoulder a significant duty to uphold truth with integrity, credibility, courage and a sense of responsibility.” Anwar also expressed hope that journalists and media practitioners would continue to serve as the voice of the people, a check on power and the conscience of the nation. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said journalists must remain at the forefront in safeguarding the integrity of information at a time when slander could spread rapidly and perception could often outweigh reality. LRT services to resume on Wednesday after derailment

Online trends fuel risky hiking habits

KUALA LUMPUR: A tendency among some individuals to underestimate nature, fuelled by the pursuit of instant popularity on social media, has been identified as a main factor contributing to the rising number of missing hikers and emergency incidents in the forest. Mountain Medicine Society Malaysia president Muhamad Aliff Abdullah said safety awareness among enthusiasts has not grown in tandem with the rising popularity of the activity. He said aesthetic content on digital platforms has given rise to a trend of “express hikers” who are obsessed with chasing peaks or ticking off mountains for fear of missing out. “Many people see hiking as a low-risk activity, while the mountain environment can change very quickly and unpredictably. Problems arise when social media does not reflect the reality of the challenge, only showing the beautiful end result. “As a result, many go for challenging category trails without basic experience, proper physical training or honestly assessing their own abilities. This could lead to a reduced ability to make rational decisions due to extreme fatigue, hypothermia or acute mountain sickness.” Muhamad Aliff, an expert in wilderness medicine and high-altitude hiking and climbing, explained that emergencies in the forest are usually the result of a chain of weaknesses, including equipment preparation, fitness levels, terrain and mental assessment of hikers. He said common critical mistakes in the field are failing to maintain team discipline, refusing to turn back during bad weather as well as relying too heavily on gadgets without basic navigation and survival skills. Commenting on beliefs surrounding missing hiker incidents and mystical elements or forest taboos, the 7 Continents Exploration Club of Malaysia president said while elders’ customs and advice should be respected, modern science must remain the priority. “Many traditional taboos, such as not speaking loudly or not leaving the group, actually carry important safety elements. However, scientifically, what is often seen as ‘mystical disturbances’ is usually caused by dehydration, panic, lack of sleep, reduced oxygen to the brain or high-altitude cerebral oedema.” He suggested that hiking safety management in the country be reformed through a more modern and structured risk management system. Muhamad Aliff also proposed a standard mountain risk-rating classification system, as well as mandatory digital registration systems, including QR codes, live tracking or emergency beacons for high-risk routes. He called for stricter action against those engaging in hiking activities without a permit, as well as efforts to strengthen rescue expertise through a national-level outdoor recreation safety education module. Meanwhile, Norimah Abd Karim of Persatuan Malim Gunung Perhutanan Selangor said SOP violations, such as ignoring team discipline and refusing to use the “buddy” system in a rush to reach the summit first, remains the biggest challenge faced by mountain guides. With over 10 years of experience, including completing the Trans Titiwangsa expedition, she said it is risky for hikers to carry minimal gear just to appear like professional trail runners on social media. “There are hikers who focus on getting interesting content so much that they are willing to take risks and neglect their own safety. In fact, there is a trend in which they go on ‘Trans’ trips (covering several peaks in one expedition) without enough preparation.” Forest and hiking safety issues have once again come under the spotlight following a series of tragedies, including the case of Jaslinda Saludin, 49, who went missing at Gunung Batu Putih in Tapah last Saturday, with search and rescue efforts ongoing. Nur Izzati Humaira Azizul, 19, also went missing last Saturday while descending Bukit Changkat Asa in Hulu Bernam, Selangor, before her body was recovered four days later by search teams. – Bernama

o More time needed for operations to fully return to normal as train speeds would initially be controlled: Transport minister

PETALING JAYA: Services on the affected section of the LRT Ampang/Sri Petaling Line are expected to resume on Wednesday after repair works are carried out following a train derailment near the Chan Sow Lin Station on Thursday. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said repair works on the damaged track would begin immediately after the derailed train was removed yesterday. “The derailed train will be lifted and removed today. Once the train is removed, repair works on the track will begin and are expected to take between three and five days. “The track is expected to be reactivated on Wednesday, after the long weekend holiday,” he told reporters after a site inspection yesterday. However, he said it could take between a week and 10 days for operations to fully return to normal as train speeds would initially be controlled once services resume. He added that for the time being, trains travelling from Ampang towards East Sentul would temporarily stop at the affected station before reversing direction to allow space for repair works to be carried out. “One of the tracks cannot be used at the moment because the derailed train is still on the rail line and needs to be removed using a crane,” he noted. Loke said preliminary findings indicated that the switch station, which was supposed to direct the train towards Putra Heights, malfunctioned during the incident. “The first coach was on the correct track but the subsequent coaches were diverted onto the track heading towards Ampang. “This caused the six-coach train to be pulled in two different directions, resulting in the first and second coaches derailing.” He noted that the cause of the switch station malfunction must be thoroughly investigated as the system was designed to function automatically.

Following the incident, Loke said the Transport Ministry has established an independent special task force to investigate the derailment, separate from Prasarana’s internal investigation. He highlighted that the task force would determine whether the incident was caused by human error, equipment malfunction or system failure. The task force will be led by Air Force Air Accident Investigation Bureau director-general Brig-Gen Tan Chee Kee and aided by railway engineering experts. Loke added that the task force has been given 30 days to submit its findings, which will later be presented to the Cabinet and made public for transparency. He also said despite the derailment, all other stations remain operational, although train frequency at affected stations would be slower over the next few days, with intervals of between six and eight minutes between trains. He described the derailment as a “very serious incident” despite there being no injuries reported. “We are fortunate that the train had not yet reached maximum speed when the

It said the investigation would be carried out independently, transparently and professionally, and appropriate action would be taken in accordance with existing legal provisions. “If the operator is found to have breached licence conditions, enforcement action may be taken under Section 101 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.” The investigation will also cover elements of negligence under Section 202 and Section 128 of the Act, including against any individual found to have failed in carrying out responsibilities or acted negligently while performing duties, compromising rail operational safety, it added. The agency said it would continue working closely with the ministry and relevant agencies to ensure the safety standards and public confidence in the rail public transport system remain safeguarded. – Bernama derailment occurred during a track switch outside the station.” Loke stressed that incidents involving derailments could pose significant risks to passenger safety and the government is committed to ensuring transparency, accountability and stronger safety measures within the public rail system. He instructed Land Public Transport Agency to impose the “maximum possible penalty” on Prasarana Malaysia Bhd following the incident. He said the ministry is taking a firm stance on the incident and would not compromise on public safety issues. On Thursday, media reported that LRT services on the Ampang/Sri Petaling line were disrupted after a train derailed while passing through a track switch area at the Chan Sow Lin Station. Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd said the disruption occurred after a train became immobilised due to a track switch failure, which also affected the timetable on the line. It added that all 25 passengers on board were confirmed safe and evacuated in accordance with SOPs.

It said it views the incident seriously and has carried out site inspections to assess the initial situation and ensure immediate action was taken by the operator.

The agency said the report would be examined in detail before interviews and further probes are conducted to determine the factors that contributed to the incident. It said the investigation would also seek to establish whether there were elements of non-compliance, negligence or breaches of operating licence conditions. “In line with the directive issued by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the agency has immediately opened an investigation paper to conduct a thorough probe into the incident. “The investigation is underway to determine the actual cause of the incident, including examining compliance with SOPs, asset

The first inspection was led by its director-general Ahmad Radhi Maarof together with representatives from the Rail Enforcement and Rail Planning divisions while the second inspection, held at 3pm on Thursday, involved representatives from the Transport Ministry. “The second site inspection session was conducted to review the initial progress of the investigation, the level of operational safety and the follow-up measures that need to be implemented by the operator.” The agency stressed that passenger safety, the reliability of the rail system and integrity of public transport services could not be compromised under any circumstances.

o Celebration also serves as fundraising platform for charitable causes through lighting of oil lamps

GEORGE TOWN: More than four decades since its inception, the tradition of building elaborate Wesak floats at Sian Chye Tong Temple in Ayer Itam continues to thrive through the dedication of its youth members. Known for its colourful and intricately decorated Buddha floats, the temple has become a familiar part of Penang’s Wesak celebrations, drawing devotees and visitors each year. Wesak Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and is observed by Buddhists worldwide through prayers, charitable acts and religious ceremonies. According to the temple’s Youth Section chairman and float designer Loh Choon Teik, preparations for this year’s floats and temple decorations took more than a month to complete. “The float is adorned with various artificial flowers, including lotuses, roses, orchids, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, carnations, tulips and ferns,” he said on Tuesday. The main Buddha float, measuring 9.14m in length, is also fitted with LED lights, bulbs and spotlights to brighten and enhance its appearance. “In conjunction with the Year of the Horse, the Buddha float features two 1.5m-tall horses,” he said, adding that the 1.22m-tall statue of the Buddha would be placed on the carriage. A second float bearing the temple’s logo and a large lotus flower will also join the Penang Wesak Day procession tomorrow, beginning from Lee Sih Chong Soo (Lee Kongsi) at 6pm. The procession will follow a 7km route through Jalan Burma, Jalan Kelawai, Lorong Burma, Lebuhraya Peel, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Perak, Jalan Anson and Lorong Madras before returning to its starting point. It was previously reported that a total of 23 floats themed “Bridging Through Digital, Cultivating Wisdom Together” would be featured in this year’s Wesak procession. Fruit trader drowns during family outing KUALA BERANG: A fruit trader drowned while swimming with family members during a picnic at the Belukar Bukit Waterfall in Sekayu near here. Hulu Terengganu police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab identified the deceased as Muhammad Zahari Mohd Zain, 26, from Kampung Kelulut, Marang. He said authorities received a report on the incident at 4.22pm on Thursday, prompting the Fire and Rescue Department to despatch a team in a fire engine to the scene five minutes later. Initial investigations found that Muhammad Zahari visited the waterfall with 19 family members for a picnic. However, only five of them, including Muhammad Zahari, entered the water while the others remained by the riverbank. “Muhammad Zahari was found unconscious by individuals from the public at about 5pm. Medical personnel at the scene later confirmed his death.” Sharudin said the body was taken to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital Forensic Unit. He advised the public to exercise caution when carrying out recreational activities at waterfall areas due to the current unpredictable weather conditions. Meanwhile, in Alor Setar, Kedah, a man is feared to have drowned after he tried to retrieve a jetski that drifted off in the waters near Langkawi. Langkawi Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief fire superintendent Mohd Zamri Abdul Ghani said the department received a call about the incident at 9pm on Thursday. “As soon as firefighters from the Persiaran Putra Fire and Rescue station arrived, they learned that Arash Nashran Abdul Maser, 23, had gone missing in the sea about 100m from the beach. “He was trying to retrieve a jetski that drifted out to the sea after strong waves caused him to be thrown into the water. “It is understood that he wasn’t wearing a life jacket at the time,” Mohd Zamri said in a statement. – Bernama Body found wrapped in mattress in Malacca MALACCA: A decomposed body of a person believed to have been dead for between two weeks and a month has been found wrapped in a folded mattress inside a shophouse in Pokok Mangga here. Malacca police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the deceased, whose identity has yet to be established, was discovered on Thursday night after the owner of the premises inspected the property when he was unable to contact the tenant. Upon entering the shophouse, the owner detected a foul smell and found a suspicious mattress bundle in the living room before alerting the police. Further inspection uncovered a badly decomposed body with both hands tied. “Based on the condition of the body and the circumstances at the scene, we believe foul play was involved,” he said at the Malim police station. Dzulkhairi said preliminary investigations found that the two-storey shophouse had been rented by a woman as accommodation for her son. He said police subsequently arrested a 40-year-old local man, believed to be the tenant’s son, to assist in the investigation. Police believe the dead person had a connection to the suspect, who tested positive for syabu, and has seven criminal records. Proposal for new PJ hospital raises eyebrows

resources be allocated according to need. “When one region enjoys special care within a half-hour drive while another endures a day-long journey for basic attention, the social contract frays.” The trio also said challenges faced by existing public hospitals in Selangor stem less from bed shortages and more from outdated equipment, underfunded facilities and staff shortages. They likened plans to spend billions on the proposed PJ Hospital while existing hospitals continue facing operational challenges to “buying a new car while one’s roof is leaking”. They said the ministry should instead prioritise upgrading equipment, expanding ICUs and replacing ageing scanners in existing Klang Valley hospitals. “Then, with the remaining resources, build not in Petaling Jaya but in Kota Bharu, Sandakan or Sibu. Build where a new hospital would slash travel time from four hours to 40 minutes. Build where a single MRI machine would serve a population the size of Kedah or Perak.” They said resources should be directed towards areas where access to healthcare remains limited, particularly for lower income patients in remote regions.

He said Nasi Kandar was already a major attraction for tourists visiting Penang and the official recognition would further strengthen the state’s image as a food destination. “With official heritage status, tourists would no longer see Nasi Kandar merely as street food, but as a cultural experience with its own historical value.” Mohammad Mosin said the recognition would also encourage operators to preserve the authenticity of traditional recipes, maintain food quality and improve hygiene standards. He added that the move would help preserve the culinary art of spice-blending and the unique “banjir” serving style associated with Nasi Kandar . “For Presma, this gazettement is a form of high appreciation and official recognition for the contributions, hard work and legacy left by early Nasi Kandar pioneers, which are now continued by our members.” Penang Hawkers’ Association president Ooi Thean Huat welcomed the move to gazette local culinary favourites as heritage foods, calling it a “very timely move”, especially in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026. “We are supportive of the state government’s move. The recognition will further boost our image as a food haven, regionally and even globally. Since we are a multiracial country, our food is very unique and suitable for many palates,” he said.

education, research and the creative economy. He added that all heritage items gazetted at the state level could potentially be proposed for recognition under the National Heritage Act. According to Wong, it could also pave the way for selected intangible cultural heritage elements to eventually be considered for inclusion in the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “Although the State of Penang Heritage Enactment 2011 (Enactment No. 14) was passed in 2011, no official state-level cultural heritage gazettement had been carried out under its framework over the past 15 years. This resulted in the legal mechanism not being fully activated for a long period,” he said. He added that 2026 could be regarded as a

Wong said recognising and protecting food culture, celebrations, language and built heritage would help strengthen understanding and appreciation among Malaysia’s multicultural communities. “The gazettement at the state level is not merely an administrative procedure but reflects the Penang government’s strong commitment to preserving the state’s historical memory, cultural connections, artistic treasures and social identity. “Cultural heritage is not merely a vessel of local memory, but also an important bridge in strengthening national unity.” Wong also said the move demonstrates Penang’s proactive role in elevating cultural heritage as an important asset for tourism,

Preserving Sabah’s exotic culinary heritage o Eighty traditional dishes take centre stage at RTM’s 80th anniversary bash

Ű BY JOSHUA CHANG newsdesk@thesundaily.com

K OTA KINABALU: A vibrant showcase of 80 traditional Sabahan dishes was held recently in celebration of Radio Television Malaysia's (RTM) 80th anniversary. The event aimed to preserve cultural heritage and reinforce the state's multiethnic identity. State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar praised the initiative for its significant impact on safeguarding local culture. “Programmes like this do more than highlight the uniqueness of Sabahan traditional food. They serve as a platform to preserve our cultural heritage and strengthen the identity of our multiethnic community,” he said when officiating at the event at Imago Shopping Mall. Jamawi added that Sabahan gastronomy is deeply rooted in natural resources and local produce, and is tied to the community's way of life. “Many of our traditional dishes use ingredients such as lemongrass, turmeric, chilli, pandan leaves, ulam , vegetables and various local herbs grown in backyards or kitchen gardens,” he said. He emphasised that the programme was not merely a food festival but also carried an important message about the role of kitchen gardens in modern society. Gardening, he said, should be encouraged as it provides fresh and healthy food for families while

helping to reduce household expenses. “In today’s challenging cost of living environment, growing your own basic cooking ingredients at home is a practical step,” he added. Jamawi pointed out that many Sabahan traditional dishes would be incomplete without fresh ingredients from kitchen gardens, reflecting the close link between heritage food and nature. Jamawi also acknowledged RTM's eight-decade role in uniting the people through information, education and entertainment. The food showcase, he said, also served as a platform to promote Sabah's gastronomic tourism, particularly in conjunction with Visit Sabah Year. “Traditional food is not just cuisine – it is a story of culture, customs and identity passed down through generations.” Also present at the event were Assistant Minister Datuk Ruslan Muharam and RTM Sabah director Yusni Mohamad Ali.

China key leaders no-show at Asia defence summit

Japan bans photos at beach volleyball meet TOKYO: Spectators at a top beach volleyball competition in Japan this weekend will be banned from taking photos or videos after organisers said fans had been responsible for “malicious” shots of players. The Japan Volleyball Association (JVA) said recording images on any device, including smart glasses, would be prohibited at the Tonarino round of the country’s beach volleyball tour for men and women, taking place today and tomorrow. The ban carries on from last week’s round in the coastal city of Hekinan, where JVA said players had complained that they were “unable to concentrate on their performance”. “Despite our repeated guidance and reminders regarding the rules and etiquette for photography, we have observed malicious photography by some spectators at the Hekinan round,“ JVA said upon introducing the ban. “We take a very serious view of the fact that inappropriate photography has not improved despite repeated warnings.” JVA expanded its ban for this weekend’s event to include binoculars, opera glasses and similar devices. “We sincerely apologise to all those who were looking forward to watching and taking photographs, but our top priority is to maintain an environment in which the competing athletes can concentrate on their performance with peace of mind.“ Sports authorities in Japan have made repeated efforts to protect athletes from inappropriate photography. The country’s women’s team uniforms at the 2024 Paris Olympics were made from a special material that blocks infrared photos highlighting underwear. Japan’s gymnastics association also introduced a photograph permit system at events. – AFP Myanmar president visits India YANGON: Myanmar’s putschist-turned president Min Aung Hlaing will travel to India today for a five-day visit, New Delhi said, his first trip abroad since becoming civilian leader. The Myanmar foreign ministry, which announced on Thursday an official visit to India “in the near future”, said Min would be accompanied by a delegation of ministers and other officials. India’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the visit would run from today until Wednesday. The former military chief will hold talks with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and meet business representatives, according to both governments. Myanmar also said a meeting with Indian President Droupadi Murmu was planned. The visit “is expected to further strengthen and deepen the multi-faceted relations between the two countries”, New Delhi said. Ex-junta chief Min was sworn in as Myanmar’s president in April, continuing his rule from a civilian post five years after snatching power in a military coup. As the nation’s armed forces chief, he ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, detaining the popular democratic figurehead and triggering an ongoing civil war. After five years of ruling by diktat , Min organised an election ending in January that excluded Suu Kyi’s party and large swaths of the country under rebel control. The vote also secured a walkover win for Min and military allies in parliament who backed him into the top office. His swearing-in ceremony was attended by representatives from the neighbouring nations of China, India and Thailand as well as 20 other countries, according to parliamentary officials. –AFP

SINGAPORE: Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth was the headline speaker at Asia’s premier defence summit opening yesterday, but China’s top officials made no appearance despite weighty questions such as Taiwan and the war in Iran. Beijing’s defence minister skipped the three-day Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore for the second year running, which analysts viewed as a sign of China’s rising power. Yet, the forum that brings together top officials from about 45 nations has historically provided a setting for debate as well as quiet and high-profile diplomacy. Defence Minister Dong Jun’s absence meant no meeting there with Hegseth as China warns the US over its involvement with Taiwan and Washington seeks an end to the Mideast war. The Middle East was the source of 57% of China’s direct seaborne crude imports in 2025 o Move interpreted as sign of Beijing’s rise in power, say analysts BEIJING: Sixty-four Chinese citizens detained in the Philippines have been released after the Philippine Justice Department ruled there was insufficient evidence for the allegations they faced, China’s embassy in the Southeast Asian country said. The allegations against them include violations of a nuclear safety law, and immigration and labour laws. The Chinese citizens, who worked at a steel plant in the Misamis Oriental province, were detained on May 15. Two weeks ago, Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro called for a full probe into an operation in the province that was said to involve undocumented foreign nationals and Filipino workers handling potentially hazardous materials. The Chinese embassy yesterday said six more nationals were undergoing the process to get their release. – Reuters Philippines frees detained workers

Two other former defence ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu previously spoke at Shangri-La. Both were subsequently handed suspended death sentences on graft charges, analysts said. “It’s kind of a poisoned chalice for any Chinese defence minister to speak out publicly,” said Jennifer Parker, adjunct professor at the University of Western Australia’s Defence and Security Institute. With Dong again not attending, one of the reasons seemed obvious, said Choong, writing for the Lowy Institute think-tank. “For one thing, China has truly arrived as a major power in the region, so it does not really need to send its defence minister to brave a fusillade of questions and try to ‘score’ brownie points.” However, Beijing like last year, risked not having a senior leader present if the two most pertinent global security issues – Taiwan and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz – do come up. “At a time when perceptions of US leadership are falling, Beijing could soothe jangled nerves in the region by reassuring delegates that it would use force against the island only as a last resort,” Choong said. – AFP

– 5.9 million barrels per day (mbd) – maritime tracking firm Kpler said. Hegseth’s second trip to the Shangri-La Dialogue comes after US President Donald Trump’s visit to China in May, and his subsequent suggestion that US arms sales to Taiwan could be used as a bargaining chip with Beijing. Trump said “fantastic” trade deals were struck after his visit to China, although details were vague and no breakthrough with Beijing emerged in the war with Iran. China sent Dong to the dialogue as recently as 2024, during which he and then Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin met for their first substantive face-to-face talks in 18 months. “Dong was absent last year, reportedly due to China’s reluctance to engage with Hegseth,”said William Choong, principal fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute think-tank. China on Thursday said it would send experts and scholars from its army’s study institutions. Major-Gen Meng Xiangqing of the National Defence University is expected to lead the delegation, which is to include scholars from the National Defence University, the Academy of Military Sciences and the Navy.

N. Korea focused on self-reliance: Singapore minister SEOUL: North Korea does not seem keen to engage with the United States, South Korea or Japan and is focused on building up its self-reliance and military deterrence, Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said following a trip to the reclusive state. Pyongyang’s ties with Moscow deepened in recent years after North Korea sent thousands of troops to fight with Russian forces in Kursk. Beijing has also been working to draw Pyongyang back into its orbit, with passenger train services and flights between the two neighbours resuming in past months. treat the two Koreas as separate. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, who held talks with Vivian on Thursday, said there are no indications North Korea is about to return to the table but his Singaporean counterpart’s talks in Pyongyang were an opportunity to explain Seoul’s commitment to peaceful coexistence.

According to a transcript shared by the Foreign Ministry, Vivian spoke to Singaporean media on Thursday after a visit to both Koreas respectively on May 26 and 27. His last trip to North Korea was in 2018. “What’s clear is that they’re certainly in a closer relationship now with Russia. China remains indispensable to it, but they are not yet ready to open up significant channels of communication with the United States or with ROK and Japan at this point in time,“ he added. US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung have repeatedly expressed interest in holding talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Vivian also mentioned North Korea’s “outright, categorical rejection of reunification” with South Korea – a shift from his last trip to the nation – and noted how Pyongyang, the capital, has developed despite the country’s deepening isolation. “It’s a city which would fit in with any modern city throughout Southeast Asia, or even Northeast Asia, for that matter,“ he said. North Korea has revised its constitution to define its territory as bordering South Korea and remove references to reunification, according to a draft of the text reviewed by Reuters this month, codifying Kim’s push to

Cho also said he believed North Korea would eventually return to dialogue with the US “if the price is right” in an interview with the Yonhap news agency published yesterday. On Thursday, South Korea’s foreign ministry said Cho asked Vivian for Singapore and Asean’s support for efforts to reopen dialogue with North Korea. Vivian said he invited North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui to the Asean Regional Forum and had encouraged them to look for appropriate opportunities to continue to engage the larger world. – Reuters
