Over 15,000 turtle hatchlings released in Penang since 2021 BALIK PULAU: Thanks to sustained conservation efforts, 15,822 turtle hatchlings have been released into the sea at the Pantai Kerachut Turtle Conservation and Information Centre here since 2021. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said during the same period, 273 turtle landings were recorded and 24,357 turtle eggs were collected at the conservation centre, located within the Penang National Park. He said this success proves that marine biodiversity conservation in the state can be carried out consistently, despite challenges such as pollution and coastal development. “Turtles are natural treasures with immense ecological, tourism and educational value for Penang, particularly in boosting the state’s eco-tourism agenda. “Development and conservation cannot operate in isolation. The state must progress, but we must also preserve environmental balance so that natural treasures such as turtles do not go extinct.” Chow said coastal areas on the western side of Penang, including Pantai Teluk Bahang and Pantai Teluk Kampi Beach, have been identified as key landing sites for the Agar and Lipas turtle species. He added that these areas are sensitive habitats that remain free from excessive light and noise pollution, which could otherwise disrupt turtle landing and hatching processes. “For 2025, there were 67 turtle landings, with 6,470 eggs collected and 4,586 hatchlings released into the sea.” He said visitor statistics to the conservation centre have shown encouraging growth, with 154,302 visitors recorded from 2021 to April last year. – Bernama SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government yesterday launched the Bantuan Rahmah Insan Istimewa Selangor 2026 programme to expand existing support for the welfare of persons with disabilities (PwDs). State Women Development and Social Welfare Committee chairman Anfaal Saari said the initiative, under the Yayasan Anak Istimewa Selangor, is a rebranding of the Bantuan Khas Anak Istimewa Selangor. She said the programme introduces several significant improvements, including a new category of assistance for disability-friendly residential toilet facilities with RM1,500 in aid, as well as assistance of RM1,200 for medication, supplements and other special needs. “The additions are intended to ensure facilities and basic healthcare needs for PwDs at home are better maintained and more comfortable. The age limit for beneficiaries has also been increased from 18 to 60 years old, enabling adult PwDs to access assistance for equipment, medical needs and therapy support.” Anfaal said the programme will retain existing support, including RM1,200 in assistance for therapy centre fees, up to RM3,000 for special equipment and RM120 for special education school fees. She also said the submission of supporting documents for applications under the initiative will be conducted entirely online to expedite the approval process and ease matters for parents and guardians. During rainy weather, the situation becomes even more challenging. “There are two key components in this initiative, including bus stop infrastructure upgrades and pedestrians connectivity improvements. “In collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry, we have constructed 344 bus stops and 24 walkway projects totalling approximately 7.5km since 2025, with all works fully completed in March 2026,” he said. Ku Jamil added that while priority will be given to locations along Prasarana-operated routes, the upgraded infrastructure will remain accessible to all public transport users including other bus operators and taxis. “Although most of the bus stops serve our routes, they are open for use for other buses and taxis. There are no restrictions,” he said. Ku Jamil also highlighted that Prasarana conducted feasibility studies, traffic assessments and bus lane evaluations prior to submitting the proposal to the government. “We undertook the necessary studies and presented the proposal before receiving support from the ministry. Prasarana is the implementing agency for this initiative,” he said. He added that the upgraded bus stops are expected to carry joint branding between City Hall and Prasarana as part of the collaboration. Earlier, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry has approved an extra allocation of RM1.5 million to City Hall to build and upgrade bus stops, following complaints about the lack of proper facilities at several locations in Kuala Lumpur. Loke said each bus stop costs between RM15,000 and RM30,000 to build or upgrade, and the allocation is expected to cover 100 bus stops. He said a similar initiative was carried out in Penang with local authorities, expressing hope that City Hall would be quicker in implementation as the 100 bus stops there took six months compared with a possible three-month timeline in Kuala Lumpur. programme also aims to foster greater public appreciation for bus captains, whose roles go beyond driving to include ensuring passenger safety under varying traffic and operational conditions. Two senior citizens lose RM2.7 million in online scams GEORGE TOWN: Two senior citizens, including a former company director, lost almost RM2.7 million after falling victim to separate online investment scams promising lucrative returns through fake investment platforms. Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the first case involved a 62-year-old machinery attendant, who lost RM1.29 million after being deceived in an online investment scheme known as “Global Finance Trends XA”. “The Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Central Seberang Perai district police headquarters received a report from the victim on Thursday. “The victim became interested in the scheme after seeing an investment advertisement on Facebook in March before being contacted by a female individual via WhatsApp,” Azizee said in a statement. The person promoted investments allegedly linked to a China-based company known as Citic Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd and promised high returns. Initially, the woman only provided local investment tips and the profit predictions were accurate, gaining the victim’s trust in the scheme. Azizee said the victim was then instructed to download the “Global Finance Trends XA” app for registration and investment transactions, before making 28 payments amounting to RM1.39 million into a CIMB bank account belonging to the company between April 6 and May 4. He said the victim only received returns of RM103,000 before realising he had been cheated after failing to withdraw RM1 million in profits displayed on the app. In a separate case, Azizee said a 72-year-old female former company director lost RM1.4 million after being duped in an online investment syndicate using the name “Shanghai Futures Exchange”. “The victim became acquainted with a foreign man through Facebook in July 2023 before continuing communication via the LINE app. The man also sent a copy of his identity card to convince the victim he was genuine before offering an investment scheme promising high profits within a short period. “The woman was then instructed to access a website through a link provided for membership registration and investment purposes. Between Nov 27 last year and Feb 5, the victim carried out 53 transactions amounting to RM1.4 million into 30 different bank accounts, including 26 individual accounts and four company accounts,” he said. According to Azizee, the victim only realised she had been scammed after failing to withdraw RM30 million in profits displayed on the app used for the transactions, with her account blocked while the man became unreachable. He said investigations are ongoing and both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – Bernama

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump raised the case of jailed Hong Kong democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai in talks with President Xi Jinping but was told it “is a tough one”. Family and supporters of the 78 year-old British citizen had hoped the US president could help secure his release. Lai was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier this year under a security law imposed by Beijing. The media tycoon, who was an influential figure in the former British territory’s pro-democracy movement, was arrested in 2020 in a crackdown following anti government protests. Lai’s legal team says he has health problems, fuelling fears he may die behind bars. Trump said he believes Xi is seriously considering freeing a church pastor detained in China but is less hopeful over the plight of Lai. “I did bring it up, but it’s a tougher one for him,” Trump said. “He said Jimmy Lai is a tough one for him.” Lai’s daughter Claire said she was grateful to Trump. “I am confident he and his administration will be the ones to free my father,” she said. Claire said it is an opportunity for Xi to do “the only just and honourable thing”. Lai’s case has sparked international concern, particularly in the UK, where he is seen as being punished for defending democratic undertakings given in 1997 with the handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule. – Bernama Man killed by great white SYDNEY: A man in his thirties was killed by a great white shark yesterday in Western Australia. It urged the public to take “additional caution” in waters around the area, a popular tourist destination. It is the first fatal shark attack in Western Australia since March last year, when a surfer was mauled off a remote beach. There have been nearly 1,300 shark incidents around Australia since 1791, of which more than 260 resulted in death, according to a database of the predators’ encounters with humans. A 12-year-old boy died in January after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour. Foreign Ministry responds to warning
TAIPEI: Taiwan said yesterday it is an “independent” nation, hours after President Donald Trump warned the island against declaring formal independence. Trump wrapped up a state visit to Beijing on Friday where President Xi Jinping had pressed him not to support Taiwan. Taiwan depends heavily on US backing to deter China from carrying out its threat to annex the island. Taiwan “is a sovereign and independent democratic nation, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China”,
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. It said that US arms sales were part of Washington’s security commitment to Taiwan, after Trump flagged that he was considering the issue. Taiwan’s statement came after Trump issued a warning to the island against making a declaration of independence. “I’m not looking to have somebody go independent. And, you know, we’re supposed to travel 9,500 miles (15,289km) to fight a war. I’m not looking for that,” Trump told Fox News’ Special

Giant panda cub set to charm Indonesia zoo visitors BOGOR: With his signature black and white fur, the first giant panda born in Indonesia is growing and thriving ahead of his public debut this month. Satrio Wiratama was born in November last year in Taman Safari Indonesia, a zoo in Cisarua, West Java, to a pair of pandas loaned by China. His mother, Hu Chun, and his father, Cai Tao, arrived in Indonesia in 2017 when they were both seven years old as part of “panda diplomacy” aimed at celebrating 60 years of bilateral ties. Nicknamed Rio, the cub was the only panda born in a zoo outside China in the past three years, Aswin said.
“There are so many Indonesians who had to go all the way to China just to see baby pandas. Now they don’t have to anymore,” said zoo director Aswin Sumampau. Inside the enclosure built to welcome his parents, the 170-day-old cub, whose name means “brave and noble warrior”, was playing with a panda stuffed toy and a bamboo teether.
Ahead of his debut later this month, Rio has already amassed many fans who can’t wait to see him. Rio weighs more than 11kg and is still learning to climb, according to Bongot Huaso Mulia, the veterinarian caring for him. The cub, whose coat is still peppered with reddish fur, is very active and still nursing, he said. – AFP

Zelensky vows revenge after attack KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky promised retribution against Russia on Friday after laying red roses at the rubble of a Kyiv apartment building where a missile strike killed 24 people, including three children. “Ukraine will not allow any of the aggressor’s strikes that take the lives of our people to go unpunished,” Zelensky said after meeting top military and intelligence officials to discuss retaliatory long-range strikes. Zelensky said later in his nightly video address that retaliatory actions had already been approved. He pointed to a strike on an oil refinery that the military said triggered a large fire in the central Russian city of Ryazan. Four people were killed in the Ryazan strike that damaged high-rise apartment buildings, the governor of Russia’s Ryazan region said. Zelensky had earlier laid flowers and spoken to rescue workers at the site of the attack in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, on the left bank of the Dnipro River. Kyiv officials declared Friday a day of mourning, with flags at half-mast across the city of three million. Residents brought flowers, stuffed animals and sweets to a makeshift memorial at the destroyed housing block. About 20 Western diplomats came to show solidarity. – Reuters Strike halts busy NY commuter line NEW YORK: About 3,500 workers at New York’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) went on strike yesterday after failing to reach a wage agreement, halting the busiest commuter rail system in the United States. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) serves nearly 300,000 passengers daily and is owned and operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The International Brotherhood of Teamsters union said the strike, the first in 32 years, was launched by five unions. It said the workers had gone three years without raises during the bargaining process. “This strike would not have happened if the MTA and LIRR offered members the reasonable terms the government recommended,”said Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen President Mark Wallace. US President Donald Trump had signed an executive order in January to appoint a second emergency board to mediate and avert work stoppage at LIRR, after the unions asked him to intervene. Trump had initially named a board in September last year to head off the labour dispute. – Reuters

Medics in Gaza said at least seven people, including three women and a child, were killed and at least 50 were injured in airstrikes targeting an apartment and a vehicle. Medics in Gaza said the first airstrike targeted an apartment in the Gaza City area of Rimal, killing at least four and wounding several others. A second Israeli airstrike soon after targeted a vehicle on a nearby street, killing three, the medics said. Reuters video footage from the scene showed flames engulfing an apartment in a mostly bombed-out building. Palestinians could be seen pulling at least one body from the wreckage, wrapped in a white plastic tarp. Gaza’s Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said hundreds of people had been living inside the building that was targeted. “The missile was fired without any warning or notification. “We are talking about a number of (dead). We are talking about a big number of wounded, among them families,” Basal said. Defence attorney Andre Dalack said it was too early to discuss details of the case. He raised concerns about Al-Saadi’s detainment. “We understand he’s being held in solitary confinement, which we think is both cruel and unnecessary,” Dalack said. – Reuters Shaheen Al Marar, who represented the Gulf country, said the UAE had faced repeated Iranian attacks since Feb 28 targeting civilian and critical infrastructure and held Tehran fully responsible. Al Marar also accused Iran of obstructing maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. He said the UAE did not seek protection from others and was fully capable of deterring what he called “unprovoked aggression”. Members of the grouping had expressed respective national positions and shared a range of ߑ perspectives, India’s statement said. These ranged from the need for an early resolution of the crisis and the value of dialogue and diplomacy to respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, it said. Also figuring in the talks were the importance of upholding international law, ensuring safe and unimpeded maritime commerce through international waterways, and protecting civilian infrastructure and lives. The statement said BRICS ministers “recalled that the Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory”. They also flagged the importance of unifying the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under the Palestinian Authority. Without naming the UAE, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told a news conference that a BRICS member blocked some parts of the statement. “We have no difficulty with that certain country, they have not been our target in the war. We only hit American military bases and American military installations that are unfortunately on their soil,” he said, adding that he hoped things would change when BRICS leaders meet later this year. “I hope by the time we come for the summit, they come to a good understanding that Iran is a neighbour, we have to live with each other, we have lived for centuries ߑ and we have to live for centuries to come.”
NEW DELHI: Top diplomats from BRICS nations, including rivals Iran and the United Arab Emirates, failed to issue a joint statement on Friday after a two-day meeting in Delhi, leaving host India to release only a chair’s statement that exposed their differences. Tehran had wanted the grouping of emerging economies to condemn the US Israeli war on Iran and accused US ally the UAE of direct involvement in military operations against it. Iran has struck the UAE with missiles and drones several times since the war began on Feb 28. “There were differing views among some members in regard to the situation in the West ߑ Asia/Middle East region,” India said in the statement and outcome document.
The UAE later said in a Foreign Ministry statement that it categorically rejected Iran’s allegations and what it called attempts to justify attacks on the UAE, saying it reserved its full sovereign, legal, diplomatic and military rights to respond to any threat or hostile act. Iraqi man faces terror charges in New York court NEW YORK: An Iraqi national accused of involvement in attacks against US interests in Europe has been arrested and sent to the US to face six terrorism-related counts. Al-Saadi is accused of coordinating or supporting nearly 20 attacks and attempted attacks across Europe and the United States, “including his efforts to kill on US soil”, said US Attorney Jay Clayton for the Southern District of New York.
