Govt to introduce allowance for post-maternity leave

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is set to introduce a post-maternity leave allowance under the Employment Insurance System Act to support working mothers returning to the workforce. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said female labour force participation has seen a slight decline, particularly among those aged 25 to 29 and 35 to 39, mainly due to motherhood responsibilities. “The government will introduce a post-maternity leave allowance under the Employment Insurance System Act 2017, providing financial assistance for up to 30 additional days after the existing 98-day maternity leave period. “The benefit, at about 80% of the insured monthly wage, is expected to benefit over 132,000 women workers.” Anwar also highlighted the risks faced by Malaysians working abroad, particularly daily commuters to Ű BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI AND KIRTINEE RAMESH newsdesk@thesundaily.com

“It is true that our investments are at their highest in history. It is true that our economic achievements are strong. It is true that our currency is among the best-performing in Asia. “But the next question is this – in a peaceful country, with the sacrifices of soldiers, police, security forces and workers at all levels facing risks every day, is it true that the government, especially for those at the middle and lower levels, has done enough? “What is their fate? Are they adequately protected? Anwar stressed that the government is not seeking to impose rigid wage structures on private companies but rather urging greater compassion and responsibility in corporate practices. “I am not proposing incentives that would cause companies to suffer losses. I am not suggesting anything that would weaken competitiveness. “I am only proposing that both national and corporate leadership become more attentive and demonstrate compassion.” He said Malaysia’s economic progress must also reflect fairness, emphasising that sacrifices made by workers should be matched with appropriate recognition. He said Malaysia would continue to maintain its Budi95 fuel subsidy at RM1.99 per litre, describing it as among the lowest fuel prices globally, after Brunei. “When asked to be realistic and increase fuel prices, I say yes, I must manage the economy but I must also consider the fate of workers at the lower level.” Anwar said the government would continue to support workers while ensuring responsible fiscal management, stressing that fuel prices would remain unchanged. He said TalentCorp would also provide RM10 million for internship and startup-related support. Anwar stressed the importance of swift implementation, directing all agencies involved to submit progress reports within two weeks for Cabinet review in the third week. He added that the PACE programme carries a total allocation of RM710 million and congratulated the Human Resources Ministry and related agencies for the initiative.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged large corporations in Malaysia to ensure that workers’ welfare is protected. He said national development must be balanced with fair treatment of employees across all levels. Speaking at the Labour Day celebration 2026 yesterday, he said the country’s progress could not be separated from the contribution of workers – from frontline services to industrial sectors. “We list the major companies in our country, (with) profits of one billion, two billion ringgit. Yet even increasing wages by RM40 is difficult. How do we address this?” Anwar said while Malaysia continues to record strong investments, economic growth and currency performance, the question remains whether workers, particularly those at the lower and middle levels are receiving adequate protection. “I want workers, employers and wealthy companies to hear this clearly. The country must be safe and continue to develop, but it must also guarantee that the fate of workers is protected.” He called on companies, especially the top 50 largest corporations, to reassess the treatment of their employees. Anwar added that national stability depends on contributions from all sectors, including security forces, sanitation workers and industrial workers. “If we want this country to remain peaceful, who is responsible? The security forces. If we want productivity, it is workers at all levels. If we want cleanliness, it is the cleaners and sanitation workers. “This is a responsibility that must be fulfilled. I use this platform in front of workers to remind everyone – if we want to defend this country as peaceful and inclusive, there must be a spirit of compassion in the concept of a Madani nation.” He said the issue of workers’ welfare could not be ignored amid positive economic indicators. continued upskilling and reskilling efforts alongside TVET reforms. “I thank Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi for his role in strengthening TVET.” Anwar said the Progressive Acceleration for Capability and Employment (PACE) initiative, which focuses on social protection, training and workforce transformation, was also introduced. He said under the initiative, Socso has allocated RM580 million to support jobless workers and improve employability while HRD Corp would provide RM100 million for training and job placement programmes. RAWANG: The safety of Malaysians taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 is the government’s top priority, after Israel detained mission participants in international waters yesterday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government viewed the incident with serious concern, describing Israel’s action as a breach of humanitarian principles and international law. “We naturally pray for the safety not only of Malaysians but also of citizens from other countries caught up in the detention by the unjust Israeli regime, many of whom are being held in international waters. “This is sheer madness and shows no respect at all for (humanitarian and international law) principles. MyDigital ID critical to online ecosystem: DPM PUTRAJAYA: MyDigital ID plays a critical role as the foundation of a national digital ecosystem, providing a secure and reliable way to verify identity online and enabling Malaysians to access services with confidence, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He added that strong momentum is already visible, with millions of Malaysians having begun using MyDigital ID, signalling that the foundation is in place and that the direction taken is both relevant and necessary. “Although MyDigital ID received various reactions during its launch, it has achieved encouraging numbers. “Our approach has been deliberate. We began by strengthening collaboration within the financial sector, working closely with MyDigital ID and the National Cyber Security Agency to enhance identity verification in digital transactions and safeguard financial interactions.” He was speaking after officiating at and witnessing the memorandum of understanding exchange ceremony between MyDigital ID and strategic partners on Thursday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development minister, said efforts are now expanding into a broader and more interconnected landscape spanning the mobile ecosystem, federal and state government services, the education sector as well as digital platforms serving millions of users daily. “When government agencies, industry players and digital platforms move in alignment, we create a system that is more resilient and capable of responding to evolving risks.” He said the direction forward is a “one key” approach in which a single, trusted identity enables reliable access to multiple services without friction and duplication. “This is the vision we must realise, a Malaysia in which digital identity becomes a national backbone and empowers the public to participate in the digital economy.” – Bernama Bumiputera education needs dedication: Minister KUALA LUMPUR: Bumiputera education’s future needs bold political commitment to ensure public investment yields fair returns, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said. He added that all parties must avoid resting on statistical achievements and instead focus on the quality of human capital to make the education agenda effective. “Don’t betray the duty by getting complacent or settling for numbers on paper. We have a moral duty to future generations, to leave them with a much better education system than the one we inherited.” He was speaking at the opening of the 2026 Bumiputera Education Congress event, bringing together over 5,000 academics, professionals and students for Umno’s 80th anniversary celebrations. Zambry, who is also BN secretary-general, said education goes beyond social mobility as it is a chance for the nation to reflect on its position in a fast-changing world. He also said education gaps must be tackled from early childhood, not left until university, because a nation’s strength lies in the quality of its knowledge and values. “Real education creates not just smart thinkers but individuals who grasp responsibility, values and civilisation. We aim to build bumiputera generations strong in knowledge, skills, creativity, confidence and moral character.” He added that the congress findings would be shaped into a national resolution for government leaders to adopt as a priority in the National Education Council. The congress focused on mainstreaming tahfiz streams, boosting Technical and Vocational Education and Training, early childhood education and creating an education waqf model to sustain the bumiputera agenda. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will roll out a 24-hour social security coverage for 9.6 million workers, expand legal protections to 1.64 million gig workers and raise the age limit for housewives’ protection schemes, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan announced yesterday. The announcement was made in his Labour Day address signalling a major shift in worker welfare and labour market reforms. Speaking at the National Labour Day Celebration event, Ramanan said the Social Security Organisation (Socso) will begin implementing 24-hour protection from June, extending coverage beyond workplace incidents to include accidents occurring outside working hours. “This ensures contributors are protected at all times, not only when they are on the job.” In another key move, the age eligibility for the Housewives’ Social Security Scheme will be increased from 55 to 60 years, benefiting more than 720,000 women nationwide. He described the measure as long overdue recognition of unpaid care work performed by women at home. Ramanan also highlighted the enforcement of the Gig Workers Bill, which came into effect on March 31, bringing 1.64 million gig workers under formal legal protection for the first time. Beyond welfare measures, the government is set to introduce structural reforms under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), including the creation of a “new social contract” between employers, workers and the state. The reforms aim to address imbalances in which profits are concentrated among employers while risks are borne by vulnerable workers. Among the long-term targets announced is a push to raise the minimum monthly wage to RM3,000 by 2030, alongside broader efforts to increase overall employee compensation. Ramanan said Malaysia is also positioning

It also proposed more comprehensive support for caregivers and families of patients through training, respite care services and the strengthening of community-based services. “Dementia is not just a health issue but also has implications for social structures, economic productivity and family wellbeing.” Tan said Malaysia is projected to become an aged nation in the near future, which could lead to an increase in dementia cases if no effective early interventions are implemented. “Through early and integrated action, disease progression could be slowed, patients could live with greater dignity and families could receive the support they need.” The coalition emphasised that a comprehensive approach, involving the government, healthcare sector, communities and society at large, is crucial to ensure better care for those affected. – Bernama He added that the government is closely monitoring the impact of global energy and geopolitical challenges on the labour market, and stands ready to intervene where necessary to protect workers and sustain industries. He emphasised that government leaders are ultimately accountable to the public. “We are not bosses – we are workers for the people.” government’s commitment to ensuring economic gains are felt across all levels of society. Highlighting Malaysia’s economic progress, he said the country entered 2026 on a strong footing, with gross domestic product growth reaching 5.2% in 2025, surpassing earlier projections of 4.8%. He added that gross national income per capita has risen above RM57,000, while Malaysia’s global competitiveness ranking improved to 23rd in the world. He also said unemployment has dropped to 2.9%, the lowest level in 11 years, reflecting a tightening labour market and stronger job creation. Ramanan said female workforce participation has also increased to 56.5%, which he described as a significant achievement, recognising women as not only family pillars but also key contributors to national economic growth.

itself as a leader in advanced technology, with 13MP outlining ambitions to become an artificial intelligence-driven nation. He added that as part of the push, the government will establish a semiconductor academy to develop local talent in chip design and AI manufacturing. “We do not want to merely follow global technological trends, we want to shape them.” He also said the “Klinik Gig Bergerak” initiative would be deployed at delivery hubs and city centres, bringing Socso registration, the Madani Employee Card, free health screenings and mental health counselling directly to gig workers. He said the Madani Employee Card will also be expanded to include registered gig workers, supported by mobile service units offering registration, health screenings and mental health support. Ramanan said the ministry is currently reforming 26 labour laws to ensure they remain relevant to modern employment conditions. While outlining the new initiatives, he acknowledged that many Malaysians continue to struggle despite positive economic indicators, including a 2.9% unemployment rate. “Progress that is not shared fairly is not true progress,” he said, emphasising the

Survey finds 10% of elderly living with dementia KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is facing a public health challenge, as approximately 10% of citizens aged 60 and above are living with dementia, according to the findings of the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2025. The findings, announced on April 20 in Putrajaya, showed an increase from 8.5% in 2018, reflecting an urgent need to strengthen efforts in the prevention and management of conditions which affect memory, thinking and the ability to carry out daily activities. The coalition comprises the Dementia Alliance of Malaysia, Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia, Johor Bahru Alzheimer’s Disease Support Association, Dementia Society Perak and the Penang Dementia Association.

She said although there have been improvements in several healthy ageing indicators, such as a reduction in depression rates and an increase in older adults’ ability to carry out daily activities, the developments are still insufficient to curb the rise in dementia. “The coalition urges the government to accelerate the implementation of the Dementia Action Plan 2023-2030, including allocating specific funding to ensure its effectiveness.” The coalition also put forward several key recommendations, including expanding public awareness campaigns to reduce stigma, strengthening early screening at primary healthcare facilities, and implementing

Universiti Malaya Geriatric Unit head Prof Dr Tan Maw Pin, who represents a coalition of dementia-related organisations, described the increase as an early warning to prioritise brain health in the national health agenda. “The rise in cases is not only influenced by age, but is also linked to the burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol, which are major risk factors for cognitive decline.”

Decision on diesel road tax cut to be announced soon KUALA LUMPUR: The decision on the proposed reduction of road tax for diesel powered vehicles will be announced soon. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry is reviewing a suitable mechanism, including evaluating any potential impacts on government revenue. “We are conducting the study promptly, which requires a thorough review before any final decision is made, as not all diesel vehicles are excluded from subsidies. Some still receive assistance through targeted pricing. “Therefore, we must find a balanced approach to assist those not receiving subsidies by reducing their tax burden.” He was speaking after attending the Readers’ Forum on the English edition of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, Volume V on Thursday. Last Saturday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is considering lowering road tax on diesel vehicles to help ease public burden amid rising fuel prices. Anwar, who is also Finance minister, said he had requested that the Transport Ministry find a suitable mechanism to reduce the diesel price, taking into account the impact of diesel price increases on users, especially in sectors still dependent on diesel-powered vehicles. Loke also said the ministry is working to implement initiatives that encourage greater use of public transport as a cost-saving measure during the current global supply crisis. “We are trying to ensure that the use of public transport is optimised. I am aware many have complained due to occasional service disruptions, but we take the concerns seriously to ensure our systems serve the public effectively.” – Bernama AirBorneo launches festive discount KUCHING: Sarawak-owned airline AirBorneo has introduced its “Harvest in Unity” festive campaign, offering a 20% discount on all 21 destinations in its Rural Air Services network. The promotion offers a 20% discount on normal fares, with the sales period running from May 1 to May 5 for the travel period of May 23 to June 7. It aims to facilitate the “balik kampung” journey for thousands of Sabahans and Sarawakians returning home for the Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Gawai celebrations. AirBorneo CEO Megat Ardian Wira said the campaign reflects its commitment to serving as more than just a carrier, but also as a vital link for family reunions, particularly for those travelling to interior areas. “The airline aims to ensure that distance is no barrier for those wishing to celebrate the peak of the harvest season with their families and communities in longhouses and villages across Borneo.” He added that the campaign highlighted the spiritual and communal significance of the festive season. “‘We understand that for our passengers, the flights are not just about travel, but about the long-awaited embrace of a parent, a shared meal in a longhouse and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage. “As we help our community ‘balik kampung’ this year, our priority is on ensuring operational reliability and consistent service for all our guests.” – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department has objected to the Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 in the capital, citing concerns it could harm moral standards and social norms. Its director Hanifuddin Roslan said the department regretted the organisation of the event and urged the organisers to review its concept, taking into account the sensitivities of Malaysia’s multi-racial, multi-religious and multicultural society, Bernama reported. “(The department) calls on all parties to ensure that entertainment programmes do not contain elements that could affect the sanctity of religion and public morals.” He also referred to the Bayan Linnas (religious advisory) Series 351 titled “Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026: Entertainment Has Limits, Organisers Bear Responsibility and Immoral Concerts Must Be Stopped”, issued by the Federal Territories Mufti Department, which states that Islam does not reject entertainment outright but requires it to comply with syariah guidelines. He added that the department would continue organising religious programmes, including lectures, talks, forums, tausiyah (religious reminder) sessions, social media campaigns and Friday sermons to remind Muslims to adhere to Allah ’s commands and avoid activities deemed immoral. He also said the department would hold simultaneous yasin recitations and special prayers after Maghrib across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan to pray for the wellbeing and harmony of residents in the Federal Territories and Malaysians nationwide. Entering a critical construction phase this year, the project reflects our commitment to ‘returning time’ to the public, time previously lost in traffic congestion could now be used for family and a better quality of life.” He added that apart from physical infrastructure development, an investment of RM15 million in Technical and Vocational Education and Training as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programmes is being planned to ensure the young generation possesses a globally recognised “skills passport”. He also said the state government aims to produce a workforce that is not only capable of carrying out instructions but also able to innovate and create solutions to global challenges and problems. “As we pursue productivity, we must never neglect human values. I urge employers to view mental health and work-life balance as an investment, not a cost burden.” – Bernama He said such programmes not only provide recreational opportunities for the public but also serve to promote the uniqueness of local food and cultural performances to foreign tourists. “If we do not organise such programmes, tourists would not come and the B40 group would not be able to do business. How can we boost the economy? Where programmes are needed, we will carry them out to stabilise the economy.” On the impact of the global supply crisis, Tiong said the country’s tourism sector remains on a good trajectory. He said although there has been a slight decline in tourist arrivals from West Asia, the overall international arrivals to Malaysia continue to rise, driven by increased arrivals from Asean countries and Europe.

Earlier, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said 500 officers and personnel, including support from Bukit Aman and all district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, have been deployed to various strategic locations to maintain public order and ensure the smooth running of the festival. Tiong said the event, held in conjunction with the Labour Day celebration, is a strategic government effort to drive the local economy, particularly in supporting the business sustainability of the B40 group.

He also said the unemployment rate, now stable at 2.7%, proves that Penang’s labour market remains dynamic and resilient. However, Chow said the real challenge this year is the “skills revolution,” as it faces the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the shift toward a green economy. He said the state government would not leave the public to face the changes alone, and through allocated development funding, it is building an ecosystem that not only protects but also empowers the workforce. “Two landmark projects are now transforming the career landscape in the state. He added that the focus now is to ensure that the people of Penang are not merely observers but also emerge as key players in high-value industries. “Today, May 1, we are not merely commemorating a date on the calendar. GUA MUSANG: The lives of road users continue to be at stake as livestock roam freely along main roads in this district, causing scores of collisions annually with losses reaching millions of ringgit. The problem has not only caused property damage and injuries but also claimed lives despite the implementation of various enforcement measures. A recent survey found that the presence of cattle on main roads, particularly at night, on winding paths far from settlements, heightens the risk of incidents when the animals suddenly appear on the road. Gua Musang district council president Mohd Roshdi Ismail said a total of 191 crashes o Scores of traffic crashes recorded annually, with losses reaching millions of ringgit despite implementation of enforcement measures

He also suggested strengthening the implementation of livestock tagging systems to facilitate owner identification as well as establishing designated grazing areas as a long-term measure, Bernama reported. Gua Musang district police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo said the threat posed by wandering animals is at a critical level, particularly at night and during rainy conditions. He pointed out that dark-coloured animals were difficult to spot in poorly lit areas, leaving drivers with little time to react. “By the time drivers notice an animal, the distance is already too short to apply the brakes.” He said animals tend to remain on tarred roads at night as the surface retains heat after rain. Police have also identified several incident hotspots involving stray livestock along the Gua Musang-Kuala Krai and Gua Musang-Jeli routes. Road users are advised to slow down when travelling through these areas, especially in the early morning and at night. Sik said police would continue working with local authorities in enforcement operations and take legal action against negligent livestock owners.

involving cattle were recorded in 2024, with estimated losses exceeding RM1.14 million. He said 176 cases were recorded last year, with losses surpassing RM1 million, while up to April this year 42 cases had been reported involving losses of more than RM252,000. He said local authorities conduct five to six capture operations annually in collaboration with police and the Veterinary Services Department. He added that 22 captures were recorded in 2024 and 19 in 2025, while 10 compounds were issued in 2024 and 13 in 2025 against livestock owners who failed to manage their animals. He said animals not claimed within seven days are auctioned due to limited holding capacity. “In 2024, a total of 11 cattle were auctioned and eight last year.” He said livestock owners may be fined based on the number of animals caught, in addition to daily penalties and operational costs. Mohd Roshdi said the level of awareness among breeders remains insufficient to fully resolve the issue. He cited factors such as a lack of grazing areas, high livestock numbers and a complacent attitude towards traffic crash risks for the persistent problem.

‘Senior cops needed to oversee northern border entry points’ PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency has proposed that senior police officers oversee all entry points in the north of Peninsular Malaysia at risk of being exploited for smuggling activities. “Many thanks to IGP Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail for the assistance rendered to my commander recently, which was prompt and decisive, ensuring that the confidence of my personnel was not severely affected.” including nearly RM82.1 million in seizures in 2025.

He also said the agency would incorporate a regimental approach to strengthen discipline and integrity among its personnel. He cited past issues involving non-compliance with rules, such as the use of mobile phones by enforcement officers at Immigration counters, as matters that need to be addressed through stricter discipline. In a related development, Mohd Shuhaily said the agency has submitted a study to the ministry on the need for firearms for its personnel. “For now, we are considering the use of firearms and tasers. Tasers are more suitable for airport duties while firearms are necessary for operations along the northern border.” He said the move is not intended to create a fully armed unit but to ensure the safety of personnel, given the challenges at border entry points that are exposed to smuggling activities. – Bernama

In an earlier interview, he said the agency would begin recruiting its first batch of cadets on July 1 in preparation for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link between Johor Bahru and Singapore. Mohd Shuhaily said about 460 cadets would be selected to undergo three months of intensive training before being deployed to the Johor Bahru RTS by October. He said the move would ensure that personnel have sufficient time to adapt to operational and technical requirements before the system becomes fully operational on Jan 1, 2027. “We will begin a two-month trial phase to ensure that all personnel at both locations – Woodlands (Singapore) and Bukit Chagar (Johor Bahru) – are fully familiar and efficient with operating procedures ahead of the opening.”

In the 5.40am incident on Feb 25, a vehicle driven by SAC Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir was shot at by a suspect on a motorcycle about 1km from the Malaysia-Thailand border. On the recruitment of Armed Forces veterans into the agency, he said it is an effective measure to strengthen the country’s border control while safeguarding the welfare of former military personnel. Mohd Shuhaily said the agency and the Defence Ministry are also studying a more comprehensive and structured mechanism to expand the involvement of Armed Forces veterans in the agency. He added that the agency, despite being new, had already recorded major achievements,

Its director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the agency requires entry point commanders who are well-versed in transborder crime and capable of acting swiftly to strengthen operational capabilities at entry points. When appearing as a guest on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme on Thursday, he said he is appealing to the government for all northern entry points to be placed under the leadership of police officers who are experienced in transborder crime operations. Mohd Shuhaily expressed appreciation to the police force for its swift action in a shooting incident involving the agency’s Bukit Kayu Hitam commander early this year.

Locust hobby popular among Kelantan rural folk

New community recreational venue for Malacca MALACCA: Access to sports facilities among local communities are being expanded through the Madani Adopted Village initiative, with an open hall complete with a pickleball court being built in Kampung Sungai Putat here. Ayer Keroh state assemblyman Kerk Chee Yee said the project, which is part of a RM1 million allocation under the initiative, is expected to be completed by the end of June and will serve as a catalyst for active community participation in recreational activities, Bernama reported. He said the construction of the RM380,500 open hall in Taman Ara Permai not only provides a conducive community space but also introduces trending sports like pickleball. “More importantly, we are adopting a ‘people-friendly pricing’ approach at RM10 per hour, so that all segments of the community can afford to use the facility, compared with similar facilities that are mostly run by private operators.” He was speaking after attending a site briefing on the project on Thursday, which was also attended by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat programme for the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary constituency and Ayer Keroh state seat. Also present was Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council president Datuk Sapiah Haron. Kerk, who is also deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly, said the hall can accommodate about 200 people and is suitable for community programmes, including social events. He added that the development of the hall is in line with the Madani Park concept implemented by the municipal council, which focuses on transforming open spaces into active community areas. “Like the six Madani parks that have been completed, we are upgrading previously underutilised areas with facilities such as walkways, playgrounds and stages. “This approach has proven effective in encouraging interaction among multi-ethnic communities and revitalising the function of public spaces, and this open hall project is a continuation of efforts to enhance community facilities, including access to sports.”

KOTA BHARU: In this age of AI and information technology, the hobby of keeping and taking part in competitions involving “deer grasshoppers” is still popular here, and has the potential to be promoted as an identity and sustainable cultural heritage of Kelantan. Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Veterinary Preclinical Science Studies Department head Dr Goh Soon Heng said the trend is increasingly gaining ground among the young generation as it is an affordable hobby, apart from playing an important role in strengthening local community ties. “These grasshoppers are commonly found in rural areas and people used to enjoy listening to their sounds. From just a hobby of collecting them, it has now evolved into a competition activity that unites the grasshopper fans community. “The participation of young people is very important because they are the ones who will ensure this heritage continues to grow and is organised every year,” he told Bernama recently. On the competition format, Goh explained that the winner is not judged based on the size of the grasshopper, but rather the uniqueness and frequency of its hissing sound. “This competition is very unique because it is usually held at night with the lights turned off. Participants cannot see the grasshoppers, they can only hear their sounds. “The assessment is divided into two main categories, namely the ‘melodiousness’ of the tone and its frequency. The judges will count how many hissing sounds the grasshopper can produce in a period of 30 seconds.” Goh also shared that adult locusts can grow up to eight centimetres and have an average lifespan of about 12 months. o Competitions held to judge ‘melody’ and frequency of hissing sound produced by insects

Although the hobby is becoming increasingly popular, he advised the community not to overexploit deer grasshoppers in their habitat to avoid disruption to the ecosystem. “Currently, commercial demand (sales) is not that high because the community prefers to catch them themselves. However, if the wild population starts to decrease one day, the demand to buy them would increase. “Therefore, studies must always be conducted to understand the impact of this insect. We need to know how fast it reproduces so that we can set a safe catch frequency limit.“ Looking at the projections for the next five to 10 years, Goh expressed confidence that the deer grasshopper hobby could be sustained as a healthy cultural activity, in addition to fostering community awareness to better appreciate nature.

For the breeding in captivity process, it requires the provision of a conducive small ecosystem, including a variety of leaf food sources and a medium such as soil or sticks for the female grasshoppers to lay eggs. He also highlighted the important role of the endemic insect in the ecosystem, in which it feeds on wild plants and harmful weeds, in addition to being a food source for birds and other small animals. “Conflict will only arise when their habitat is destroyed. Without a natural food source, the locusts will move to vegetable farms and end up becoming pests.” Goh also shed some light on public misunderstanding about eating grasshoppers, saying the species that is usually fried and eaten by villagers is the “turmeric grasshopper” found in padi fields, and not deer grasshopper.

IPOH: A special children’s activity centre was recently set up in Buntong, a suburb of Ipoh, to help ease the burden of working parents in the B40 low-income category and prevent their children from getting involved in undesirable activities. The centre, which started operations in Taman Keledang Emas two months ago, allows parents to leave their children to be cared for there after school hours. “The children go back home with their parents after their work is over,” said centre chairman P. Uvarajanhey. “We ensure that the children pick up some knowledge and also participate in various activities during their time here. “They would not get involved with wayward company after schools hours and be subjected to bad influences,“ he added. During their time at the centre, the children are coached on their studies and school homework while being introduced to healthy social activities. While protecting them from abuse and neglect, they are also guided in strengthening their mental development. The children would also be taught elements of the various festivities such as Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya and Christmas. The centre also acts as a bridge between the community and government agencies on relevant matters related to the needs of the families. No charges are imposed at the centre, which is under the supervision of the Kinta District Social Welfare Office and is currently caring for some 20 children. A counsellor, doctor and two supervisors are employed to support and monitor them. Funding is channelled through the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

PETALING JAYA: Miss Universe Malaysia 2025, Chloe Lim, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to officially mark her appointment as an SPCA Selangor ambassador. In this role, Lim has pledged to leverage her platform to advocate a kinder world for animals through adoption drives, educational programmes and community outreach initiatives. The MoU was signed by Lim and SPCA Selangor chairman Christine Chin at the organisation’s premises in Ampang Jaya. “We are delighted to welcome Chloe as our ambassador. Her first-hand encounters with animal welfare issues have fuelled a deep passion for improving the treatment of animals and driving positive change in the area. “As an SPCA Selangor ambassador, I aim to raise greater awareness on animal welfare, encourage responsible pet ownership and inspire more people to step forward as volunteers to become a part of something greater than themselves. “How we treat animals reflects who we are as a society, and I am KOTA KINABALU: Thirty-two rural coffee farmers in Sabah have been equipped with modern agricultural knowledge to help improve their livelihoods.
