ENGLAND coach Brendon McCullum wants to stay in his job despite a chastening Ashes series defeat but admits his future is out of his hands. England are 3-0 down in the five-match series after just 11 days of cricket, outplayed by a hun gry Australian team. McCullum had branded the tour as “the big gest series of all our lives” but defeats in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide have ended the tourists’ hopes of wresting back the Ashes from their fierce rivals. Now he and managing director of men’s cricket Rob Key are facing tough questions over their positions after yet another England capitu lation in Australia. McCullum’s predecessor, Chris Silverwood, did not survive a 4-0 defeat four years ago. The New Zealander has a contract with England until the end of 2027 – a period that includes the next home Ashes, earlier in the same year. But the 44-year-old said, in comments carried by British media, that his fate would be decided by others. “I’ll just keep trying to do the job, try to learn the lessons that we haven’t quite got right here and try to make some adjustments,” said McCullum. “Those questions are for someone else, not for me. “Sometimes you don’t win, and then those decisions are up to other people. It’s a pretty good gig, it’s good fun. You travel the world with the lads and try to play some exciting cricket and try to achieve some things.” McCullum said he believed England had improved since he took over in 2022, when he and captain Ben Stokes came together and urged players to play a fearless form of cricket dubbed “Bazball”. “We’re not the finished article, but I think we’ve definitely improved as a cricket team.” McCullum said England must show their identity in the final two games of the series, in Melbourne and Sydney. Murphy replaces Lyon in Australia squad, Cummins out SPINNER Todd Murphy has been called into the Australia squad in place of the injured Nathan Lyon for this week’s fourth Ashes test, while cap tain Pat Cummins will skip the rest of the series as his back issue is managed. Lyon was ruled out for the rest of the series by a hamstring injury sustained as Australia beat England by 82 runs in the third test in Adelaide on Sunday to clinch the series and retain the Ashes. Steve Smith was also named in the squad despite missing the third test after suffering a bout of vertigo and will captain the side in the absence of Cummins, as he did for the first two tests of the series. Cummins, who took six for 117 in Adelaide, is still on the road to recovery after suffering a back injury and is likely to be replaced in the bowling attack by Brendan Doggett or Michael Neser, who have already played in the series. “(Pat) won’t play any part in the rest of the series,” coach Andrew McDonald told reporters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground yesterday. “We were taking on some risk (with him) and we’ve now won the series, and that was the goal. So to position him for further risk and jeopardise him long term is not something that we want to do. And Pat’s really comfortable with that.” Jhye Richardson, who trained with the team in Adelaide, has also been called into the squad as a further pace option after fine domestic form on his return from shoulder surgery. Murphy, 25, has played seven tests since his debut in India in 2023 and has long been consid ered the heir apparent to Lyon. All-rounder Beau Webster, who has yet to see any action in the series, also offers part-time off spin and is another option to replace Lyon at the MCG from Friday. “Todd’s been an important part of a key over seas series. He played in the last Ashes back in 2023 and we feel as though Todd’s back to his best,” McDonald said.
