Give yourself a big round of applause. I often travel back and forth from Bogor, Jakarta to Malaysia. It is not just about love, but about the heart. (MIFFest), held from July 19 to 27. It will be featured in a new programme section called Manifesto, a showcase celebrating documentary cinema. The documentary intimately follows Malaysian radio personality Priscilla Patrick, as she recounts her harrowing experience during the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka. Miraculously surviving, Priscilla shares her journey of survival and the profound impact it had on her life. It also explores her personal story, showcasing the individuals who have shaped her life, her spiritual journey and the buildup to the events that saved her from the ocean’s deadly grasp. The Tides Will Decide focuses on Priscilla’s point of view of the event. While she was witness to the devastation, she also observed remarkable things that highlight the goodness of humanity. Through voices of those close to her and scene reenactments, the documentary gently explores the trauma Priscilla went through and the weight she still carries. Having known Priscilla through previous radio work, Azim felt a deep sense of responsibility to tell her story with honesty and care, despite the constraints of a small-scale production. The challenge, he explained, was finding creative, cost-effective ways to present the story with emotional depth and visual originality. Originally from Negeri Sembilan, Azim has a background in directing commercials, short films and most recently, a TV series for a local broadcaster. Drawing from his upbringing in a mixed-race Malay-Indian family,

Azim’s work often explores themes of diversity and the nuanced perspectives that come with it. Produced by Iskander and Feisal Azizuddin of Feisk Productions, the film was made possible through a crowdfunding campaign on MyStartr in July last year, which raised RM35,000 from over 90 local and international contributors. With cinematography by Alex Wong Kam Thim, production began in Kuala Lumpur before continuing in Dungun, Terengganu. The post-production team consisted of familiar faces in the film industry: editing by Lourdes Gason, sound design by Fuse Audio, music supervision by Brandon Shen, colour by Setyo Wibowo and VFX by Lah Hamid. The Tides Will Decide also marks the feature documentary debut of newcomers Arianna Low, who served as line producer, Nisa Ahmad as technical assistant and Qistina Ishak as art director. The Tides Will Decide will have two screenings at MIFFest followed by a Q&A session with the producer, director and Priscilla in attendance.
