MCMC urges platforms to protect users SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s move to restrict social media access for users under 16 underscores the need for platforms to exercise greater accountability in ensuring a safe online environment, said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Its deputy director (development) Eneng Faridah Iskandar said the restriction was intended to ensure that every platform took proactive steps to protect vulnerable groups, particularly children navigating online content. She explained that platform providers, as the developers of social media products, were responsible for determining and implementing appropriate safety features. “Anyone who provides a product for consumption in the open market has to ensure that it is safe and secure for use. “Those who provide online content must also be aware of who is accessing their platforms,”she said on the CNA+ programme Talking Point , titled “Social Media Ban: Will it Work?” on Thursday night. Eneng added that MCMC has seen evidence of children suffering harm and abuse through their interactions on social media, stressing that the issue was a global concern and not unique to Malaysia. However, she stressed that the regulator did not seek to punish social media companies. Instead, it wanted to work with them to address those who exploited their services to commit online crimes. “We are not portraying platforms as the enemy. We want to work with them and hold them to a higher level of accountability and responsibility.” Malaysia began enforcing safeguards for social media users under 16 on June 1, requiring platforms to introduce measures aimed at strengthening online safety and protecting young people. The rules apply to services with at least eight million users, including Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram, X, TikTok and YouTube. The platforms are required to implement age-verification systems and prevent users under 16 from opening accounts. – Bernama Former chief justice dies at age 91 KUALA LUMPUR: Former chief justice Tun Mohamed Eusoff Chin died yesterday, aged 91. His death was confirmed by former Malaysian Bar president Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab in a text message to Bernama. Mohamad Ezri cited a message posted by Mohamed Eusoff’s daughter Zuliana, who said her father died at 1am. Funeral prayers were held at Masjid Al-Hidayah in Kelana Jaya before he was laid to rest at the Section 9 Muslim Cemetery in Kota Damansara. Mohamed Eusoff served as Malaysia’s second chief justice from September 1994 to December 2000. Born in Batu Gajah, he began his career as a teacher in 1955 before pursuing legal studies in England. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in London in 1963 before joining the Judicial and Legal Service. During his long and distinguished legal career, Mohamed Eusoff held several senior positions, including magistrate, Sessions Court president, deputy public prosecutor, assistant registrar, legal adviser, parliamentary draftsman, High Court of Malaya judge and Court of Appeal president. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his condolences to Mohamed Eusoff’s family. In a Facebook post yesterday, Anwar said Mohamed Eusoff had rendered great service to the nation, particularly in strengthening the judiciary. – Bernama
Canada eyes wider defence ties with Malaysia

Malaysian exhibitions, including the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition. Several Canadian companies were already operating in Malaysia and Macaulay expressed confidence that successful ventures would encourage more firms to explore opportunities in the country, Bernama reported. He also reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, emphasising respect for international law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Asean centrality and dialogue in resolving disputes. Macaulay also explained that the newly established SMR-IP position was intended to build reliable and trusted partnerships with countries across the Indo-Pacific. “The establishment of the SMR-IP position reflects Canada’s commitment to having a dedicated three-star military officer focused on strategic engagement with Indo-Pacific partners. “The creation of this position sends a strong signal that we want to deepen our partnerships,” he said. Macaulay, who has served in the Canadian Armed Forces for more than 35 years, added that his personal connection with Malaysia dates back to 1994, when he served alongside Malaysian troops under a Canadian battalion during a United Nations mission.
KUALA LUMPUR: Canada is seeking to strengthen defence cooperation with Malaysia through expanded military training and closer industry collaboration, according to its Senior Military Representative in the Indo-Pacific (SMR-IP) Lt-Gen Derek Macaulay. He said negotiations on a defence cooperation memorandum of understanding, under way since 2024, were progressing well and the agreement was expected to be signed next year. “I think the process has been successful and there is strong anticipation that the defence cooperation agreement, or memorandum of understanding, will be signed next year. “That would provide a solid foundation for us to explore further opportunities to work together, share knowledge and learn from one another,” he said. Macaulay was speaking to Malaysian media on the sidelines of the 37th Annual International Military Law and Operations Conference 2026 on Thursday. He added that the agreement would complement nearly seven decades of bilateral ties, with defence serving as a KUALA LUMPUR: The scheduled charging of former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was postponed to Aug 27 after he was unable to appear before the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday due to a medical condition. The Bera MP is currently receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN). He had been scheduled to face a charge under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act at 9am. However, the charge was not read out and no plea was recorded. His lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad said the prosecution had registered the charge but proceedings could not continue because of a health issue. “Given his health condition, the charge could not be read out and no plea could be recorded. “We explained to the court and prosecution what happened at the MACC headquarters on Aug 6. During the process, it was discovered that he had a health problem and needed to be taken to IJN,” he said. Amer Hamzah added that Ismail was due to undergo a procedure to have a pacemaker fitted. “In view of his condition, it was not practical for the charge to be read out at IJN. We therefore requested an adjournment and the court fixed Aug 27.” The proceedings remain subject to Ismail being medically fit to attend court. Amer Hamzah also disclosed that Ismail had suffered a fall about two weeks earlier and was admitted to Pantai Hospital. cornerstone of Malaysia-Canada relations since diplomatic ties were established in 1957. The two countries are set to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. Military education remains a key pillar of bilateral cooperation, with the Military Training and Cooperation Programme training more than 750 Malaysian officers since its establishment in 1966. The programme covers areas that include language training and professional military education. Macaulay added that Exercise Mantis, which focuses on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, has become an important platform for both countries to train and learn from each other since 2014. On defence industry cooperation, he said Canada’s Industrial Defence Strategy, launched in February, and Malaysia’s Defence Industry Policy, introduced in January, offered further opportunities for collaboration. Canada is keen to work with trusted partners such as Malaysia to strengthen both countries’ defence industries, while Canadian companies have shown growing interest in

New coalition plan ends Bersatu membership in PN o Outcome in line with opposition bloc’s constitution, says PAS president Muhyiddin, the Pagoh MP, announced last month that Bersatu intended to establish a new coalition after the Negeri Sembilan state election. He indicated that the grouping would include parties under Ikatan Prihatin Rakyat, among them Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s Putra and Parti Bersepakat Hak Rakyat Malaysia, known as Urimai. Johor state election, where it failed to win a seat. Tensions resurfaced ahead of the Negeri Sembilan election on Aug 1. PAS-led PN reached a seat-sharing agreement with Barisan Nasional (BN), under which PN contested 11 seats and BN 25. Bersatu rejected the arrangement and fielded 24 candidates under its own banner, facing PN nominees in eight seats.
PM’s aide appointed Ampang parliamentary coordinator PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has appointed his political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin as the parliamentary coordinator for Ampang, tasking him with ensuring that government aid and welfare assistance continue to reach residents. Azman said the coordination effort would involve the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister’s Department, relevant government agencies and other stakeholders. “I have been entrusted by the Prime Minister to serve as the parliamentary coordinator for Ampang to ensure that assistance and welfare support are delivered to residents in a more organised, efficient and effective manner,” he said in a statement on Wednesday. He added that the distribution of aid would be closely coordinated with state assemblymen within the Ampang parliamentary constituency, community leaders and other stakeholders to ensure residents’ welfare continued to receive attention. Applications for welfare-related assistance in the constituency can now be submitted directly to the Office of the Political Secretary to the Prime Minister for coordination and action. “Together with my team, I am committed to carrying out this responsibility with professionalism and integrity to ensure that the welfare of the people of Ampang remains a priority,” Azman added. The appointment came a week after Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail revealed that her parliamentary service centre had been unable to access the MyKhas constituency allocation system since July 29, Bernama reported. Rodziah explained that the loss of access had disrupted the management and distribution of funds for welfare assistance, community programmes and infrastructure works under the Projek Mesra Rakyat initiative. She is the third MP from Parti Keadilan Rakyat to report losing access to the MyKhas portal, after Subang MP Wong Chen and Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung. MP vows to continue serving constituency PETALING JAYA: Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail has vowed not to give up despite the suspension of her access to the MyKhas constituency allocation system, stressing that her commitment to serving the people remains unwavering. “I expected it, but I will not give up. “My struggle is for the people. It will continue, even if I have to endure some hardship,” she told theSun . Rodziah earlier revealed that her parliamentary service centre had been unable to access the system since July 29, disrupting the management and distribution of allocations for welfare assistance, community programmes and infrastructure works under the Projek Mesra Rakyat initiative. She argued that the move would not affect her personally but the people of Ampang who depended on small-scale assistance and immediate support. Rodziah questioned whether the restriction was linked to her attendance at a programme in Petaling Jaya on May 17, where former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and former vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced their departure from the party to form Parti Bersama Malaysia. She noted that a written explanation had been submitted to PKR’s disciplinary board on June 23 but she had yet to receive a response. Rodziah stressed that she remained a PKR member, had neither resigned from the party nor declared support for another political organisation and had never opposed any law or government policy debated in Parliament. – by T.C. Hadi, who is the Marang MP, argued that PN was not required to formally notify Bersatu that its membership had ended as the party’s announcement had already triggered the relevant clause. “I don’t think PN needs to send an official letter. Our constitution says joining another party means leaving automatically.” Hadi’s latest remarks capped months of deteriorating ties between PAS and Bersatu, the two dominant parties within PN. Muhyiddin previously rejected calls for Bersatu to leave PN, describing the coalition as a shared “house” and insisting that his party could not be forced out as a co-founder. He also accused PAS of sidelining Bersatu and steering the coalition away from its founding principles, while PAS blamed the dispute on Bersatu’s conduct. Muhyiddin has described his proposed coalition as a “formidable” force to be established ahead of the next general election. He has also confirmed that he intends to step down as Bersatu president when his current term ends next year.

Death of teacher prompts call for workload review
Flexible Teksi Madani move for cabbies PUTRAJAYA: Taxi drivers are allowed to license or replace their vehicles with models other than the Proton S70 under the National Madani Taxi Renewal Programme (Teksi Madani). The Land Public Transport Agency said the flexibility was provided to assist applicants who already have existing vehicles or were unsuccessful in obtaining hire-purchase financing. The concession applies although the Transport Ministry’s policy announced on April 23 stipulated that new applications or taxi replacements under the programme would be voluntary and limited to the purchase of the Proton S70 taxi package offered under the programme. “Taxi drivers are encouraged to switch to Teksi Madani to enjoy the various incentives offered. “However, to assist applicants who already have existing vehicles or were unsuccessful in obtaining approval for hire purchase financing under the Teksi Madani programme, applicants are still allowed to license or replace their vehicles with models other than the Proton S70,” it said in a statement yesterday. The agency said existing taxis that are not replaced under the programme are still allowed to operate until the specified vehicle age limit expires. Teksi Madani, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 3, enables taxi drivers to become the legal owners of new vehicles, thus ending the traditional leasing practice in the industry. Under this transformation programme, the Proton S70 sedan was selected as the latest official taxi model, featuring a more modern image, without rooftop identification signs and using a special vehicle registration series beginning with the letters “GET”. Anwar also announced an additional allocation of RM10 million for the Old Vehicle Replacement Matching Grant Programme, specifically for the benefit of taxi drivers, following the positive response to the RM10 million allocation provided by the government under Budget 2026 for the implementation of Teksi Madani. – Bernama
o Social media users urge authorities to improve existing system and not burden educators with excessive tasks beyond classroom duties
KUALA LUMPUR: The death of a female teacher at a school in Hulu Selangor last Thursday has triggered widespread concern, particularly on social media, over the welfare of educators, with many urging the Education Ministry to reassess the workload of teachers. Social media users have expressed hope that the incident would spur greater efforts to safeguard the welfare of teachers, including reducing non-teaching tasks, which are said to have become increasingly demanding, allowing educators to concentrate on the teaching process. Social media user Muhammad Rafee said the ministry should introduce improvements to the existing system by focusing on essential duties of teachers. “Their primary focus should be on teaching and nurturing the next generation. In a statement yesterday, the AGC said the decision was made after carefully considering representations submitted by Liow’s lawyers, Messrs Rajpal, Firah & Vishnu. The representations, dated Dec 15, 2022, and April 6, 2023, sought to compound the 26 charges under Section 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla) pursuant to Section 92 of the same Act. “After reviewing the representations and the available evidence, the AGC agreed to offer a RM10 million compound, which Liow agreed and paid on May 29, 2023. “Apart from the RM10 million compound, settlement also included the forfeiture of a RM647,366 bond and seized assets. “Following payment of the compound, the prosecution withdrew all 26 charges against Liow in accordance with Section 92,” it added. The AGC also said the Shah Alam Sessions Court subsequently ordered Liow to be discharged and acquitted of all charges on June 15, 2023. Responding to criticism over the decision to discontinue the prosecution, the AGC maintained that Liow was not released without due legal process. It said the charges, which were filed on April 12, 2022, had already been fixed for trial between July and September 2023 before the representations were considered. “The decision was made in accordance with the AG’s constitutional powers and prosecutorial discretion, based on the overall evidence gathered during the investigation and without being influenced by external pressure or public sentiment.” On Wednesday, a group of civil society organisations called on the AGC to publicly disclose the basis, considerations and timeline behind the decision to discontinue the prosecution against Liow. The groups said the AGC had, for more than three years, failed to explain why the representations were accepted, what factors informed the decision or whether the charges would ever be reinstated. “The public is entitled to know why a RM36 million money laundering prosecution was discontinued, rather than to learn of it, years later, only through a defence press conference,” the groups said. and crew fitness for duty were non-negotiable at MAG. “We take any breach of our safety standards seriously and have acted swiftly to enhance mandatory drug screening across our active pilots. “While this isolated incident does not reflect the professionalism of the overwhelming majority of our employees, we will continue strengthening our safeguards to maintain the confidence of our passengers and stakeholders,” he told Bernama. According to MAG, the set of operating pilots completes the IMSAFER assessment before every flight to evaluate each other’s physical and mental readiness for duty, which is complemented by Threat and Error Management principles to identify and manage operational risks. IMSAFER is a pilot self-assessment checklist used before flight to evaluate fitness for duty. It stands for “illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, emotion and recency”. It added that MAG would continue working closely with aviation, enforcement and regulatory authorities to implement recommendations, strengthen preventive measures and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements across its operations and the wider aviation ecosystem.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has commenced mandatory drug screening for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots and will implement stricter screening for all active pilots, going beyond current industry practice. The parent company of Malaysia Airlines Bhd has begun screening pilots across its airlines, with the exercise expected to be completed by Aug 15. “Pilots who do not complete the screening by the stipulated date will not operate flights until they have been cleared in accordance with MAG’s procedures and regulatory requirements,” the group said in a statement yesterday. MAG said the group will also implement mandatory drug screening for all active pilots, complementing its existing random testing programme and will subsequently be expanded to active cabin crew. “This swift response reflects the high level of concern with which MAG views the recent incident involving the detention of its pilot, as

Gallery serves to boost ties with Japan
IPOH: The establishment of the Razak Sensei Gallery at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Upsi) serves to preserve the legacy of the late Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Hamid, a national educator who was known as Razak Sensei. It also serves as a symbol of peace and strengthens educational and cultural ties between Malaysia and Japan. Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Shikata Noriyuki said the gallery acts as a bridge connecting the two countries through education, cultural dialogue and the humanistic values that Abdul Razak advocated throughout his life. He said the choice of Aug 6 as the opening date also holds deep significance, as it coincides with the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, an event that claimed thousands of lives and profoundly changed Abdul Razak’s life. “His miraculous survival from the Hiroshima tragedy, and his courage in turning that painful experience into a lifelong commitment to peace and education, serve as examples worth emulating. “His life story reminds us that education goes far beyond merely imparting knowledge. Education is a force that shapes character, fosters mutual respect and helps build peaceful societies,” he said at the opening ceremony at the SITC Hall, Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus on Thursday. Also present at the event were the late scholar’s son Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Dzulkifli Abdul Razak and Upsi Strategic Department director Prof Dr Azmi Mohamed and 40 students from the Teikyo Kuala Lumpur Language Centre. Shikata said following his return to Malaya after World War II, Abdul Razak dedicated his life to the field of education. He became one of the pioneers in the teaching of the Japanese language and Japanese studies in Malaysia. According to him, Abdul Razak’s contributions went beyond nurturing a generation of educators and strengthening academic ties between the two countries. They also played a key role in the development of the “Look East” policy, which remains one of the fundamental pillars of Malaysia-Japan relations, Bernama reported. Upsi vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the gallery showcases 525 items from Abdul Razak’s personal belongings.
KOTA BHARU: The artistic heritage of kites, which is the identity of the Kelantan community, will colour the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations in the state. Dozens of mega kites are expected to be flown at the Cherang Laut Beach in Kampung Senok, Bachok during the Merdeka Mega Kite Competition later this month. In addition to showcasing the skills of kite makers in producing large-sized creations, the event also serves as a platform to promote traditional art as a medium to ignite the spirit of patriotism and love for the country in conjunction with the National Day celebrations. Among the participating groups is Team Sri Bongor, which is competing with two mega kites, namely a moon kite ( wau bulan ) and a cat kite, created by Mohd Norazizi Mustapha, 45, from Kampung Padang Bongor in Binjai. He said both kites, measuring between 11ft and 12ft and weighing about 3kg each, were also decorated with Jalur Gemilang colours, and took about two weeks to complete for the event, which will be held on Aug 30 and 31. “Every time Merdeka month arrives, I will participate in the kite competition. For this year, I produced the two kites based on the concept of independence as a sign of love for the country, apart from highlighting the beauty of Kelantan’s traditional kite art, which is becoming less known to the young generation,” he told Bernama recently. He said production of the two kites was also assisted by two of his friends, Wan Mohd Syamsul Maariff Mohd Halim, 35, and Muhamad Syahmi Rosdi, 31, and cost a total of about RM500. Mohd Norazizi said producing a mega kite requires technical skills, and teamwork when o Celebrations in Kelantan to include competition on beach involving 12-foot creations

opportunity to produce larger, more challenging designs. He is skilled in producing about 15 types of kites, including the moon kite, cat kite, quail kite, jala budi kite and peacock kite, with the production period depending on the level of complexity of the design. “It usually takes between a week and two months. The most challenging part is forming the frame because if it is too (heavy), the wind cannot (lift it) well and the kite will be difficult to fly.” Mohd Norazizi also said the moon kite, quail kite and cat kite were among the Kelantan heritage identities that need to be preserved so that they would not be lost to time. He also expressed hope that more youths would be interested in learning the art of kite making so that the heritage would continue and be recognised not only in the country but also internationally.
flying it due to its large size. “To fly a mega kite, at least eight individuals are needed. Four people help launch the kite while four others hold the line to ensure that the kite can be flown properly. When the wind is right and everyone plays their respective roles, only then can the kite be able to rise perfectly. That cooperation is very important,” he said. Reflecting on his involvement in the art of kite making, he said his interest began to blossom when he was in school after watching his friend’s father produce various types of kites. “That’s how I learned to start with selecting bamboo, forming the frame, tying it up and finally decorating the kite so that it is not only beautiful to look at but would also fly well.” Mohd Norazizi said his interest became more serious about five years ago when the mega kite competition was introduced by the local community, giving kite makers the

During just a single day’s activity, a small team from Persatuan Suara Air Kinta Perak picked up some 6,000 cigarette butts that were inconsiderately disposed in public spaces. PETALING JAYA: Malaysia needs more age-friendly homes as seniors prefer to age in their own communities, said Dr Wong Teck Wee, organising chairman of the upcoming 11th Malaysian Conference on Healthy Ageing (MCHA 2026). In a statement, he stressed that most senior Malaysians want to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. “The question is how we can create the right environment and support systems to enable them to do so safely and independently. “Ageing in place is not just about healthcare. It involves having accessible housing, safe public spaces, reliable transport, community support services and technologies that allow aged adults to continue living active and meaningful lives. “As Malaysia moves towards an ageing society, we need to rethink how our communities are designed. Homes, neighbourhoods and public facilities should take into consideration the needs of people across different stages of life.” Wong stressed that supporting senior adults to remain independent can benefit families and the healthcare system by encouraging preventive care, reducing avoidable health complications and promoting better quality of life. He said these issues will be among the key discussions at the conference, which aims to explore practical approaches in building a more age-friendly Malaysia. MCHA 2026 will bring together leading local and international experts in geriatrics, healthy longevity, dementia care, digital health, rehabilitation, nutrition and ageing research. Organised by the Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society, it will be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre in Kota Kinabalu from Sept 10 to 12. The event is expected to bring together healthcare professionals, allied health practitioners, policymakers, researchers, industry partners, aged care providers and other stakeholders involved in shaping Malaysia’s ageing landscape. She added that in the end, such pollution comes back to harm humans through affected foods that they consume. “A cigarette butt thrown on the ground does not simply disappear. It becomes part of a harmful cycle that affects our land, water, wildlife and ultimately our health.” The association also organises various events in schools every month to create awareness among children on the importance of preserving the environment and eradicating pollution, including the negative impact of cigarette butts.
