JOAQUIN NIEMANN made a blis tering start to fire a 7-under 64 and take a two-shot lead after the opening round of LIV Golf New York at Bedminster, New Jersey, yester day. The Chilean started at Trump National Golf Club’s first hole and immediately found his rhythm, making four birdies in his first five holes before reaching 5-under with another birdie at the par-five eighth. He added only two more birdies over the remainder of his round but kept his card bogey-free to finish comfortably ahead of England’s Ian Poulter and Australia’s Lucas Herbert, who shared second on 5 under 66. “My putter worked out pretty well today,” said Niemann, who is chasing his ninth individual LIV Golf title and second of the season. “Just keep doing my routine. I feel like every time I keep doing the same thing, just seeing my lines, sticking to my routine, and then seeing if it goes in. It went in today.” The 27-year-old enjoyed a

remarkable 2025 season, winning five LIV individual titles, and will be hoping to add another after claim ing his first victory of the current campaign earlier this year. Niemann’s opening round also put Torque GC at the top of the team standings. His side finished the day 4-under, three shots ahead of Australia’s Ripper GC and HyFlyers GC. Herbert continued his impressive run of form after a breakthrough month. The Australian shot a 62 in the second round of last month’s Open Championship, matching the low est score in major championship history, before finishing tied sixth for his best result in a major. A week later, Herbert secured a runaway victory at LIV Golf UK. Poulter, meanwhile, is chasing his first LIV title in five years. The 50 year-old began on the 10th hole and opened with back-to-back birdies before adding further shots at the 15th, 17th and second holes. “I’m hitting good golf shots. I feel like I’m rolling the ball really well,” Poulter said. – Reuters
