All systems go Malaysia returns to Formula One calendar after nine years as Sepang steps in to host Bahrain Grand Prix

F ORMULA ONE will make a dramatic return to Malaysia this October after Sepang International Circuit (SIC) was officially confirmed as the host venue for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, mark ing the sport’s long-awaited comeback to the country after a nine-year absence. Formula One and the FIA announced that Sepang will stage the race from Oct 2-4, subject to final agreements and approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The event will retain its Bahrain Grand Prix title and will take place between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix, with the remainder of the 2026 Formula One calendar unchanged. The extraordinary arrangement was reached following discussions between Formula One, the FIA, the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia, and other stakeholders after ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East cast doubt over Bahrain’s ability to host its scheduled race. Rather than cancel the event altogether, Formula One opted to relocate it to Malaysia, ensuring the championship retains one of its planned rounds while bringing the sport back to one of its most iconic venues. Sepang last hosted Formula One in 2017 before the Malaysian Grand Prix was dropped because of rising hosting fees and declining attendance. Its return has been widely welcomed by motorsport fans after months of speculation that the circuit could be called upon should Bahrain prove unable to stage the race. Formula One president and chief executive Stefano Domenicali described the agreement as another example of the sport’s ability to adapt in challenging circumstances. “We are delighted to

Formula One, the FIA, teams and fans back to Sepang while showcasing the country’s world class infrastructure, operational excellence and renowned hospitality. Sepang first joined the Formula One calendar in 1999 and quickly established itself as one of the drivers’ favourite circuits thanks to its sweeping layout, overtaking opportunities and unpredict able tropical weather. The circuit hosted countless memorable races over 19 editions, with world champions Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton all tasting success there. The final Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017 was won by Max Verstappen, whose victory now stands as the last Formula One triumph at Sepang before the circuit’s unexpected return this year. Ticketing details for the race are expected to be announced soon, with organisers anticipating strong demand from Malaysian fans as well as visitors from across Asia eager to witness Formula One’s long-awaited return to Sepang. – Agencies

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the opportunity as both an honour and a reflection of the close friendship between the two nations. “I extend my deepest appreciation to His Royal Highness Prince Salman, as well as the govern ment and people of Bahrain, for the trust and con fidence they have placed in Malaysia. “We are honoured to support the Kingdom of Bahrain, Formula One and the FIA in hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit this year. “This collaboration is more than the staging of a world-class sporting event. “It reflects the enduring friendship, mutual trust and close partnership between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Bahrain, while reaffirming Malaysia’s readiness and capability to host major international events,” he said.
