T ADEJ POGACAR all but sealed a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title yesterday as Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz won the 20th stage on Alpe d’Huez. With the overnight 21st and final stage of the 113th edition of the Tour likely to be the usual procession around Paris, Pogacar will need only to cross the finish line to secure a fifth Tour title in seven years. “Let’s arrive in Paris and then we can celebrate this yellow jersey,” said Pogacar. The 27-year-old Slovenian will join cycling greats Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as the only riders to have won the sport’s greatest race five times. But Pogacar will be the youngest to have done so. He crossed the finishing line yes terday fourth, arm-in-arm with team mate Isaac Del Toro, who had done TWO-TIME heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua survived two early knock downs on the way to a second-round knock out of Kristian Prenga yesterday, his trium phant ring return paving the way for a block buster all-British bout with Tyson Fury. The fight at the Jeddah Superdome was Joshua’s first since he was involved in a car crash in Nigeria in December that killed two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. The 36-year-old choked up when asked in the ring about his friends and the emotions of the past seven months, but said his second round revival was down to more than pure punching power. “That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina. That was family,” he said. Joshua and Fury now appear set for their “Battle of Britain” in November, at a venue still to be announced. Fury, like Joshua a former two-time heavy weight world champion, did his part to make the long-anticipated fight happen, stopping Mariusz Wach in a low-key bout in Pattaya, AJ survives knockdowns, stops Prenga

Pogacar leads Evenepoel by 6min 26sec going into the finale, with 22-year-old Del Toro third at 9:42. Carapaz won his second stage in three days and also secured the King of the Mountains polkadot jersey as he finished eighth overall. “It was great to win here with a com memorative jersey,” said Carapaz. “In the end, it’s been a dream Tour.” – AFP Thailand, on Friday. Fury, 37, outclassed Wach in front in the Thai resort city, chipping away relent lessly at the 46-year-old until he was pulled out by his corner in the seventh round. It was Fury’s second win in as many contests this year in his return from a 16 month layoff. Fury wasn’t ringside in Jeddah as many had anticipated, but Joshua had a message for him even so. “I’m gonna rip his heart out! I’m the meanest, most vicious champion that has ever been. Nobody can stop me,” he said. “All jokes aside, there’s two sides of this thing,” Joshua added. “One is fire. You have to have that vim, that (roar). “But also, there’s respect. I respect every thing he has done and everything that he has achieved. “But as a fighting person and someone who has been calling for this fight for a long time, we’re here now.” – AFP

Varner III (68) and Mexico’s Abraham Ancer (65). Jenny inches closer to first LPGA win JENNY SHIN carded a 1-under 71 yesterday to maintain her five stroke lead heading into the final round of the Women’s Scottish Open in North Ayrshire. Shin recorded two birdies and a bogey at Dundonald Links yesterday to ascend to 12-under 204 for the tournament. The 33-year-old South Korean is bidding for her first LPGA Tour win since captur ing the now-defunct Volunteers of America Texas Shootout 10 years ago. The last LPGA Tour player to go 10 or more years between official victories was Vicki Fergon, who went 12 years and three months between wins at the 1984 S&H Golf Classic and the 1996 Michelob Light Heartland Classic. “I’ve never been in this position (a five-shot lead), so I don’t know how to feel (on Sunday),” Shin said. “I’m going to go and practice for a little bit and get a good feel for tomorrow so I’m not such a mess in the morning.”

Course management key for Herbert LUCAS HERBERT maintained his lead through three rounds of LIV Golf United Kingdom yesterday and will carry a three-shot advan tage into the final round as he bids for a wire-to-wire victory at Rocester, England. Herbert shot a 3-under- 69 in the third round and is at 20-under for the tourna ment to maintain an advantage over Bryson DeChambeau, who was at 4-under yesterday and is at 17-under through three rounds. “Look, I enjoy it; I enjoy being in the lead,” said Herbert, who won in May at LIV Golf Virginia. “It’s been awesome to play with Bryson the last couple days and get to play with him again tomor row. It’s a great energy out there. Any time when you’re in the lead you get good energy. I think maybe playing under pressure brings the best out of me.” England’s Tyrrell Hatton (67) was alone in third place at 15-under, while Australia’s Cameron Smith (66) was alone in fourth place at 14-under. A two-way tie for fifth at 13-under included Harold

WORLD NO. 1 Scottie Scheffler surged with an eagle and five birdies on the back nine at the PGA Tour 3M Open yesterday but faces an uphill battle to catch rookie leader Jackson Koivun. Four-time major winner Scheffler had been seven shots behind overnight leader Michael Kim at the turn on day three of the event at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota. Scheffler admitted he had given himself a talking-to that featured language “I shouldn’t repeat if it’s being recorded,” after his bogey on nine. Figuring he “needed to make as many birdies as I could coming in,“ Scheffler suddenly hit a hot streak and carded a 7-under 64 to finish on 14-under, tied for the clubhouse lead among early finishers. Scheffler predicted he would “need another low number tomorrow if I want to keep the pace” on the final day. It has been a year of consis tently fine golf but multiple frustrating near-misses for Scheffler He has won just one tournament, the American Express in January, despite multiple runner-up finishes, and no majors. To win, he will need to reel in Koivun, a 21-year-old Californian col lege prodigy who only made his first PGA Tour start this month follow ing the US Open. He posted a superb round of 61 featuring eagles on the 12th and 18th. Koivun set a course back-nine record by going 8-under from the turn, including two eagles, to sit three clear atop the leaderboard on 20-under. “I definitely grew up looking up to some (of these) players, but it’s definitely a mental change that now they’re my competitors,” said Koivun. Scheffler is“obviously the best in the world for a reason and I’m sure he’s going to go up there and put a good number and get in conten tion,” he added. – AFP
