The Meteorological Department predicted last week above-normal temperatures and intense heatwave conditions in several parts of the country. Temperatures in New Delhi and other nearby cities have stayed over 40ºC throughout last week, sending power usage soaring to record levels. In addition to the burning midday heat, overnight minimum temperatures are also high, giving people little respite. India is the third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases and relies heavily on burning coal for power generation. It has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. – AFP Police were providing support to three men who called the coast guard for help from a private boat just before noon, and then travelled over an hour with their injured friend to shore. The critically injured man arrived at a boat ramp at Hull River Heads at 1pm. The man died at the boat ramp, Queensland Ambulance said. “This is a tragic incident for everyone involved,” Burns said, urging people to “continue to enjoy our beautiful coastline and be aware of your surroundings”. – AFP “Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action taken this evening against a gunman near the White House, who had a violent history and possible obsession with our country’s most cherished structure,” Trump said on Truth Social early yesterday. US media identified the suspect as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland, reporting that Best had a history of mental health concerns and interactions with Secret Service members. Police and security forces swarmed the scene, cordoning off access as National Guard troops blocked an AFP reporter from entering the area. “We heard probably 20 to 25 what sounded like fireworks, but they’re gunshots, and then everyone started running,” Canadian tourist Reid Adrian said. Journalists who were on the White House North Lawn at the time said they were ordered to shelter in the press briefing room. ABC News correspondent Selina Wang had been recording a video for social media when the gunfire broke out, capturing the sounds of the shots as she dove to the ground. “It sounded like dozens of
o President safe, bystander hurt
WASHINGTON: A gunman opened fire near the White House on Saturday evening, with US Secret Service agents killing the assailant in a shoot-out during which a bystander was also struck. President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time – on a day when he was working to negotiate a deal with Iran – but was not affected by the incident, Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. The confrontation took place at dusk when a man near the White House security perimeter “pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing”. “Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire,” Guglielmi said, without giving details on the bystander’s condition. No Secret Service officers were hurt. Temperatures in several cities across the South Asian country of 1.4 billion people have recently hovered well above 45ºC. The deaths were reported in the southern state of Telangana, with Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy calling for “statewide vigilance” to safeguard public health. “The intensity of the heat has reached unprecedented levels” and officials in Telangana should issue advance warnings about precautions to be taken during heatwaves, Reddy’s office said in a statement. Health experts say that extreme heat can lead to dehydration that thickens the blood and, in particularly severe cases, causes

gunshots,” she said on X. Trump, 79, has been the target of three alleged assassination attempts, the most recent of which took place on April 25 when an armed man stormed a security checkpoint in a hotel where Trump was attending a media gala. The man never got close to Trump or the other guests attending the event.
In July 2024, Trump was targeted during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunman killed an audience member and lightly wounded the then-candidate in the ear. A few months later, another armed man was arrested on a West Palm Beach golf course where Trump was playing a round. Trump has cited security concerns

Rescuers search for missing coal miners QINYUAN: Rescuers in northern China searched yesterday for two people still missing after a gas explosion killed 82 in a mine that authorities said was beset by serious safety violations.
The blast at the Liushenyu shaft in Shanxi province on Friday was the country’s worst mining disaster in nearly two decades, with 247 workers underground at the time, authorities said. AFP journalists saw relatives anxiously waiting by a checkpoint blocking the road leading to the mine yesterday. One man, smoking nervously on a curb, told AFP calls to his brother, a father of three, “wouldn’t go through” since the blast. He said he had “no idea how the accident happened” and that their parents were still unaware their older son was missing. “I don’t dare tell them,” he said, asking not to be named. Authorities launched an investigation, saying preliminary findings showed the Tongzhou Group operating the mine had committed “serious illegal violations”. “Those found responsible will be severely punished in accordance with laws and regulations,” officials told a news conference broadcast on state run CCTV. More than half of the workers in the shaft on Friday had gone down without being properly registered,
