Fish Liew wins big in Hong Kong

o Malaysian bags Best Actress award for moving performance in Someone Like Me M ALAYSIAN-BORN actress Fish Liew, who established her career in Hong Kong, has done the country proud by winning the Best Actress award at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards earlier this week.

Her victory was secured through her performance in the film Someone Like Me , in which she played Ah Mui. She beat other nominees, including Ma Li ( The Dumpling Queen ), Natalie Hsu ( My First of May ), Fala Chen ( Peg O’ My Heart ) and Zhang Ziyi ( She’s Got No Name ). The film saw the Johor Bahru born actress take on the challenging role of a character living with cerebral palsy. This achievement marks another personal milestone in her acting career, following her 2022 win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the biopic Anita . Prior to this, the 36-year-old Liew also clinched Best Actress honours at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards. In a post on her Instagram account, Liew expressed her deep appreciation for the recognition and gratitude for the win. performance tracing his musical journey over the years. His “Cipta 4” concert, to be held at Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil on July 4, will feature a collection of his iconic songs in new arrangements, including medleys. Original works have never truly disappeared. If they are preserved, they will continue to live on and remain in the memory of many,” he said. The concert will also feature renowned Indonesian composer and singer Melly Goeslaw as a guest artiste. Melly’s appearance is considered significant as it marks the first time she will be sharing the stage with Nasir. She said the opportunity is a long-held dream, while acknowledging the strong influence of Nasir’s works in Indonesia. “I have long wanted to perform a duet with Datuk (Nasir), but never knew when or in what setting it would happen. Thankfully, it will become a reality this year. It is a great honour for me,” she said. She added the collaboration is not just a performance but also opens the door to broader creative partnerships, including the possibility of producing a song together in the future. The concert, themed Batik Injection, is expected to be one of the most highly anticipated events, uniting two of this region’s leading composers. Local artists join international architecture exhibition in Venice

MALAYSIAN artists Ng Chi Wang, Lee Shao Chin and Koh Eng Keat will take part in the British Pavilion at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition of the 2027 Venice Biennale as part of a UK-Malaysia team. The collaboration marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between UK and Malaysia through a joint exhibition. The project pairs the Malaysian artists with UK-based curators Dr Guan Lee and Mike Lim, alongside Maria McLintock and Ben Swaby Selig. Selected from six shortlisted proposals, the team was chosen by a panel of architects, educators and cultural professionals from both countries, chaired by British Pavilion commissioner Sevra Davis. The exhibition will examine impermanence in architecture,

culture

and

how

reshapes living traditions in Malaysia and beyond. It draws from Malaysian ritual paper architecture, particularly structures built for the Hungry Ghost Festival, where temporary forms made from recycled paper and bamboo are created, used and released. Davis said the proposal connects architecture with ritual and cultural memory while continuing the Pavilion’s focus on international collaboration. The curatorial team said the project will present the Hungry Ghost Festival as a living tradition shaped by migration and acts of care for ancestors and spirits. The exhibition will run from May 8 to Nov 21, 2027, with a pre-opening scheduled for May 6 and 7.
