Perfect anniversary gift for Lampard
COVENTRY remained 10 points clear at the top of English football’s second tier Championship with a 3-1 victory over Charlton as they marked Frank Lampard’s first anniversary as boss in style. Harvey Knibbs put the visitors ahead but Josh Eccles and Ellis Simms completed a first-half revival for Coventry. Simms added his second with 14 minutes to go to make it five goals in three games for the Coventry forward and the 50th for the Sky Blues in their opening 18 games. “Really pleased,” said Lampard. “Tough match to go 1-0 down, from a
promotion push. Elsewhere, Philippe Clement secured his first victory as Norwich manager as the Canaries ended a 13 game winless run streak with a 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers. Portsmouth descended into the relegation zone with a 1-0 loss at home to Bristol City as the visitors climbed into the play-off positions after Anis Mehmeti’s 17th-minute header proved decisive at Fratton Park. Defeat, combined with Sheffield United’s 3-2 win at Leicester, dropped Portsmouth into the bottom three. – AFP
following former manager Rob Edwards’s move to Premier League strugglers Wolves. Hellberg’s new club were a goal down inside just 90 seconds when Patrick Agyemang fired the Rams ahead. Boro’s second-half pressure was rewarded when Newcastle loanee Matt Targett equalised 15 minutes from time. Morgan Whittaker then struck the winner in the 84th minute.
Victory took Boro back into the automatic promotion places after Stoke lost to Hull in an earlier match. Millwall’s Tristan Crama scored in the seventh minute of added time as the Lions beat Southampton 3-2 to move third. Saints thought they had snatched a point when Finn Azaz levelled three minutes from time with his fifth goal in four games. But Frenchman Crama’s dramatic late winner maintained the hosts’
set-piece, the first threat that they had. “That can happen.” “We had a lot of the ball, we just needed to inject speed and carry on creating chances which we managed to do.” Middlesbrough went second as new manager Kim Hellberg made a winning start as his side came from behind to win 2-1 at home to in-form Derby. make any big statements, there is a long way to go.” Everton manager David Moyes refused to use the absence of key midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who was sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane in a rare win at Manchester United last week, as an excuse for a performance full of holes. “It could be that, but it could have been the quality of Newcastle United. You mustn’t underestimate them, they’re a Champions League team,” he said. “They got off to a great start, we got off to a terrible start. They were much better than us, played better, and much more experienced than we are. “You can see Newcastle are learning from the Champions League games. When they had to defend, they are hard to play against and really quick on the counter-attack. “We were beaten by the better team, there is no doubt about that. We gave away a corner (for the first goal), it can happen to anyone at times, but the second and third goals we could have dealt with them a lot better. “We actually played pretty well. For long periods, we were probably the better team with the ball but every time we sort of risked the ball or gave it away, they were quick on us, got on to our back line too quick and caused us problems. We couldn’t stop it.” – The Independent

N EWCASTLE head coach Eddie Howe hailed their first away win of the Premier League season as a “big step forward” after the most comfortable of 4-1 victo ries at Everton. Malick Thiaw scored the fastest goal of the season after just 55 seconds, and Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade essentially put the game beyond a lacklustre Everton in the first half. Thiaw added his second after the break before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s goal-of-the-game consolation. Having not enjoyed a League victory since April 7, it was no surprise to see the scenes at the end with players celebrating in front of the travelling support. “That was really important as we haven’t had that feeling enough or at all,” said Howe. “Very pleased today that we were able to put that right and give them that winning feeling to go back to Newcastle with. “I’m just pleased I don’t have to answer the dreaded questions on it. “We have a lot of work to do to say we have solved some of the issues we have had, but it is a big moment for us. A step forward.” Asked whether a significant mental hurdle had been overcome, Howe added: “Time will tell. I’m not going to
