West Indies’ John Campbell plays a shot against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium yesterday. – AFPPIC

It became 378-9 when Muthusamy bowled Shaheen Shah Afridi, on seven, for his sixth wicket. India eye clean sweep after bowling out Windies INDIA needed just 121 runs to win the second Test and sweep the series 2-0 after bowling out the spirited West Indies for 390 yesterday. Justin Greaves, unbeaten on 50, and Jayden Seales (32) put on 79 runs for the final wicket to frustrate the Indian attack on day four at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. John Campbell (115) and Shai Hope (103) had steered West Indies into the lead after the tourists resumed on 173-2 while following on. The left-right batting pair of Campbell and Hope put on 177 runs for the third wicket. Opener Campbell reached his first Test ton with a six off Ravindra Jadeja before the left-arm spinner trapped him lbw in the morning session. Hope kept up the charge after lunch and reached his first Test hundred in eight years with a boundary off pace bowler Mohammed Siraj. India enforced the follow-on after they bowled out the West Indies for 248, a deficit of 270 from the hosts’ first innings 518-5 declared.

– both caught behind by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan – in extracting spin from the Gaddafi Stadium pitch after Senuran Muthusamy took a career-best 6-117 in the morning. At the break Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi were unbeaten on 45 and 23 respectively, with the tourists still trailing by 266 runs in the first innings. Noman has figures of 2-47. It was Noman’s like-for-like left-armer Muthusamy who destroyed Pakistan after they resumed on 313-5, losing their last five wickets for just 16 runs. Salman Agha hit five 4s and three 6s in his 93 and was last man out, caught in the deep off spinner Prenelan Subrayen, who took 2-78. Agha added 49 with Rizwan to take their sixth-wicket stand to 163 before Muthusamy ripped out the middle order with three wickets in the 12th over of the day. Rizwan was the first to go, for 75. Two balls later Noman went without scoring.

day for the Twenty20 series against England later this month because of a “minor medical issue”, coach Rob Walter said. The 35-year-old former captain turned down a central contract with New Zealand Cricket for this season and also missed the home T20 series against Australia earlier this month, which the Black Caps lost 2-0. “Kane had to overcome a minor medical issue in the past month, and we both agreed he needs some more time to get himself physically ready to return,” Walter said. “He’s obviously a world-class player and we’re hoping these two weeks will ensure he’s ready for the ODIs against England and the following tour by the West Indies.” New Zealand play England in T20s in Christchurch on Oct 18 and 20 before the third match at Auckland’s Eden Park on Oct 23.

Cummins may not be fit for first Ashes Test INJURED Australia captain Pat Cummins said yesterday that he was “probably less likely than likely” to be fit for the first Ashes Test next month, but was still clinging to a shred of hope. Pace spearhead Cummins has not played since picking up a lower back injury in a Test match against the West Indies in July. Cummins admitted time was run ning out to get his body ready for the opening Ashes Test beginning in Perth on Nov 21. “I’d say probably less likely than likely, but still got a bit of time,” Cummins told reporters, adding that he felt a “bit stiff”. Cummins said he was still two weeks away from bowling again in the nets and then it would take time to rebuild his fit ness to a level where he could play a full part in a Test. “You want at least a month in the nets, getting used to it,” said Cummins.

Proteas recover after Noman’s double strike

Timely boost for Coco

Gauff takes confidence from Wuhan triumph ahead of WTA Finals C OCO GAUFF said her victory at the Wuhan Open on Sunday had boosted her confidence after a disap pointing run of results, as the American prepares to defend her title at the season-ending WTA Finals in Riyadh next month. Gauff defeated compatriot Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the WTA 1000 event to clinch her 11th career WTA sin gles title. It was the 21-year-old’s first title since winning the French Open in June, and came after a series of uninspired perform ances which included a fourth-round defeat by Naomi Osaka in the US Open. “This definitely gives me a lot more confidence going into the WTA finals, after the way the mid-part of the season went for me, especially in New York,” Gauff told WTA media. “It gives me a lot of confidence to try to defend that title. Obviously, winning it last year, I know how tough it is to do, so I’m just going to take it match by match and hopefully I can end up with the trophy.” Gauff, who did not drop a set in Wuhan, has won all nine of her finals on hard courts. “I definitely think it’s the surface I’m most true to,” the two times Grand Slam winner added. “Growing up I liked the sure ness of bounces and the sureness of knowing when I’m going to stop and when I’m going to go. “A lot of people think (my best surface) is clay. I don’t know my favourite surface. I feel like it’s still going to be hard court, for me.” On Sunday, Gauff became the first woman in a decade to win nine consecutive hardcourt finals, a feat last achieved by Serena Williams, who won 12 between 2013-15. “I didn’t know that was a stat, so I’ll try not to think about it if I’m in another hardcourt final to keep that record going,” she said. Gauff will make her fourth consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals, scheduled to take place between Nov 1-8. The American didn’t make it past the group stage in 2022, but reached the semifinal the following year. Last year – in what marked the WTA Finals’ inaugural edi tion in Riyadh – she made it all the way and captured her first title at the event. “For me, just qualifying for the finals, especially a bit early – I consider this early, not having to play the other tourna ments, just feels great,” the world No. 3 told Arab News . “This is a prestigious tournament, one that I always look forward to playing and being a part of. “I remember I was so tired going into that tournament and I had never played that long into the season, and as grueling as a season before; and then like playing singles and doubles too. “When I lost my first match, I was like, ‘OK, it’s fine.’ I just had the goal to just win one match and it just didn’t happen. “And then honestly, right after that, I was like, well, to win this tournament, I have to do so much.” – Reuters/Agencies
