Newcastle cruise into Carabao Cup fourth round in style, Foden stars for City
T WO goals apiece by Joelinton and William Osula helped holders Newcastle United ease to a 4-1 victory over third-tier Bradford City and into the League Cup fourth round yesterday. Newcastle ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought by beating Liverpool to win last season’s competition and once Joelinton and Osula scored in the space of two minutes early they were never in any danger of a shock exit. The night could have been billed Premier League vs League One as Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all entered the competition against third-tier opposition. The fourth-round draw, made late in the evening, gave Newcastle a home tie against Tottenham while Manchester City are away at second-tier Swansea City. Arsenal will host Brighton and Hove Albion while Liverpool are at home to Crystal Palace. Chelsea are away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe fielded a strong line-up for his side’s opening hurdle in
the defence of their trophy and his team proved too slick for League One leaders Bradford. Joelinton put them ahead in the 17th minute with his first goal for nine months, controlling Anthony Gordon’s shot and placing his effort past Bradford keeper Sam Walker. Osula ran through to make it 2-0 in the 19th minute but Newcastle had to wait until the 75th minute for Joelinton to make it 3-0 with another cool slotted finish. Osula arrived at the club from Sheffield United as a raw youngster last summer, and Howe and his coaches have since gone to work with him on the training ground. Howe said: “He’s very driven. Will has a great attitude to his work, to his career. He’s very ambitious, he wants to play as all players do. “But I think he’s now justifying that by his training performances. We’ve done a lot of work with him and we’ll continue to do that for his benefit to try and get him to be the very best player he can be.”
Boyhood Newcastle fan Andy Cook smashed a reply for the visitors after coming off the bench but Osula confirmed Newcastle’s superiority with his second goal. Howe said: “It was always going to be a difficult game. Nobody makes anything easy for you. “Bradford are top of their league and full of confidence, so we needed an element of patience in our performance. “But once we got into our groove, we were good.” Foden has shown glimpses of a return to his best form for City and he gave them an early lead with a clinical finish after exchanging passes with Divine Mukasa. He then set up Savinho in the 74th minute to wrap up the tie. On Cook’s goal, he added: “He’s a proper lad, he’s been a big player for this club for the last three or four years and everyone knows about his support for Newcastle, but he’s also got a massive bond with our club as well, so it was a special night for Cooky just getting on the pitch.
“But that’s a goal he’ll be talking about for the next 50 years, I expect.” Phil Foden was on target for City as they beat League One Huddersfield Town 2-0 away When asked if Foden was happiest in a more central role, City manager Pep Guardiola said: “Absolutely. Close to the box I think he plays in the pockets perfectly. “When he plays a little bit free and close to the box, he can do something that is unique, we know that. “When Phil plays in that position behind the strikers, he’s a real threat. “We’ve seen already with Phil (these last) few games. “When the team play better, when every player makes his potential… but it’s not just today. “The game against Arsenal, (Manchester) United, Napoli, he was really good.” Guardiola made nine changes following Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Arsenal, with only Foden and Nico O’Reilly retaining their places in the starting line-up. – AFP/The Independent
Newcastle drawn against Spurs, Wrexham set for all Welsh clash
THE defending Carabao Cup champions, Newcastle United, have the trickiest draw of the fourth round when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur in an all Premier League clash. Eddie Howe’s men progressed easily through the third round with a statement victory over Bradford City. The Magpies have struggled in front of goal since selling
Alexander Isak to Liverpool on deadline day but they look more composed in the final third and will need to rediscover their attacking talent if they hope to defeat Tottenham. Wolves, yet to earn a point in the top flight, will play host to Chelsea who have enjoyed cup competitions under Enzo Maresca while Liverpool and Crystal Palace will play out a repeat of this year’s Community Shield when
they meet at Anfield. Palace were triumphant at Wembley in what is Liverpool’s only defeat of the season so far. Mikel Arteta named a strong team to face Port Vale yesterday. With some slight pressure on the manager’s shoulder Arsenal will be targeting silverware this year and will need to get past Brighton to reach the quarterfinals. Five teams from lower leagues remain in the
competition with League Two’s Grimsby Town the lowest ranked among them. CARABAO CUP 4TH ROUND DRAW: Arsenal vs Brighton , Grimsby vs Brentford , Swansea vs Manchester City , Newcastle vs Tottenham , Wrexham vs Cardiff , Liverpool vs Crystal Palace , Wolves vs Chelsea , Wycombe Wanderers vs Fulham .
