T OTTENHAM ran riot in the second half of their 3-0 win over 10-man West Ham yester day as the pressure mounted on under-fire boss Graham Potter. Thomas Frank’s side took the lead through Pape Sarr’s header soon after the interval at the London Stadium. West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek was sent off for a studs-up foul on Joao Palhinha seven minutes after Sarr’s opener. Lucas Bergvall made sure Tottenham capitalised on Soucek’s dismissal as he bagged Tottenham’s second goal and provided the assist for Micky van de Ven to seal the points in a one-sided London derby. Tottenham climbed to second in the Premier League, their third win in four games erasing the bitter taste of a surprise defeat against Bournemouth

before the international break. It was the ideal preparation for Tottenham’s Champions League campaign, which starts with a visit from Villarreal on Wednesday (3am Malaysian time). “We had some good crosses into the box, dominated and kept West Ham hemmed in,” Frank said. “We scored a brilliant goal from a corner. The red card helps, of course, but I felt we were dominant in the game.” In stark contrast to Tottenham’s early season success, West Ham are languishing in the relegation zone after a third defeat in

The Hammers have conceded 11 goals in the league, as well as crashing out of the League Cup against Wolves to leave Potter fighting to avoid the sack. Hired in January after Julen Lopetegui’s sacking, Potter has struggled to make an impact in east London. The former Chelsea and Brighton boss desperately needs a winning run to stave off the axe, starting with next weekend’s game against Crystal Palace. “We are a new team and we have to stick together and focus on the things we’ve done well and see where we can improve,” Potter said. – AFP

four matches. Potter and his team were booed off at the final whistle as the few fans who remained in the stadium showed their displeasure. “The scoreline is a difficult one for us. We made a mistake early in the second half and the game gets away from us after the red card,” Potter said. “It was difficult for the players, we’re at home, we’ve got our pride and don’t want to make it worse. “I understand the fans’ reaction because the scoreline is the scoreline. I understand why people are upset.”

CHELSEA missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as Fabio Carvalho’s 93rd minute equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw for Brentford in yesterday’s west London derby. The world champions paid for Enzo Maresca’s experimental team selection as Kevin Schade fired Brentford into a first half lead. Substitute Cole Palmer led the Chelsea revival on his return from injury to equalise before Moises Caicedo’s thunderous strike looked to have snatched all three points for the Blues. But Brentford’s persistent threat from long throw-ins got its reward at the death when Carvalho was left unmarked to tap in from close range. The 23-year-old has started only four Premier League games since the start of last season, but Brentford boss Keith Andrews, who turned 45 yesterday, said he anticipates a more prominent role in the future. “Fabio is someone I feel for,” he said. “He hasn’t had as many minutes as he deserves, but his application to his craft is pretty special. “Fabio does trust me. He knows I believe in him. I’ve asked for a bit of patience because I truly believe he’ll be a big player for this club.” Chelsea remain unbeaten this season but sit only fifth, one point behind the leading quartet of Arsenal, Tottenham, Bournemouth and Liverpool.

Maresca will wonder what might have been had he not seemingly had one eye on Thursday’s (3am Malaysian time) Champions League trip to Bayern Munich. Jorrel Hato struggled on his full Premier League debut, while Wesley Fofana only lasted 45 minutes on his first start of the season. Facundo Buonanotte and Jamie Gittens were unimpressive in attacking areas as Chelsea were made to pay for wasting 45 minutes. “I think we were much, much better (in the second half),” said Maresca. “I think we deserve to win the game but it’s a shame. We lost two points.” Nick Woltemade did his best to make Newcastle fans forget the departed Alexander Isak by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Wolves on his debut. Woltemade cost a club record £65 million (RM370m) but has already begun repaying that show of faith. “Most importantly for a striker, when the ball comes into the box, you need to be there and he was,” said Howe. Bournemouth moved up to fourth thanks to Antoine Semenyo’s winner from the penalty spot to beat Brighton 2-1. Aston Villa draw 0-0 away to a rejuvenated Everton, Leeds lose 1-0 at Fulham and Sunderland held Crystal Palace in a stalemate at Selhurst Park. – AFP/The Independent West Bromwich Albion missed the chance to close the gap on the leaders after losing 1-0 at home to Derby, with Andreas Weimann firing the late winner, while Ricardo Pereira rescued 10-man Leicester in a 2-2 draw at Oxford. Millwall stopped Charlton beating their south London rivals for the first time in a 1-1 draw since 1996. Hull defender John Egan’s last-gasp equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw at Swansea, Coventry earn a 1-1 draw against Norwich, Wrexham remain winless at home this season as they lost 3-1 to QPR and Blackburn secured a 1-0 win at Watford. – AFP
