Country escapes M ALAYSIA is leading Asia in rural tourism, with Cameron Highlands emerging as the top rural destination in Asia, according to digital travel platform Agoda. Thailand’s Khao Yai and Indonesia’s Puncak round out the top three, reflecting a growing trend of travellers seeking scenic, rural escapes across Asia. Agoda’s data, based on accommodation searches made on the platform between Feb 15 and Aug 15, across eight Asian markets with populations under 50,000, also revealed that Fujikawaguchiko (Japan), Kenting (Taiwan), Sapa (Vietnam), Munnar (India) and Pyeongchang-gun (South Korea) earned a spot as the top eight rural destinations in Asia. These rural destinations, particularly those nestled in mountains and hillsides, are gaining popularity for their slower pace of life, natural beauty and opportunities to connect with local culture. “Malaysia’s highlands offer a unique combination of natural beauty and accessible experiences, making it a standout choice for domestic travellers and international visitors looking for an authentic getaway from city life,” said Agoda country director for Malaysia and Brunei Fabian Teja.
