European unity greatest Ryder Cup advantage Ű BY JACK RATHBORN
For his part, Palou has denied any contact with Red Bull Racing. His manager, Roger Yasukawa, has also claimed no talks have taken place between the two parties. The team is currently undergoing a major transition after a period of domination, with Verstappen claiming four successive F1 world titles. However, this season, they have been vastly inferior in pace to McLaren, and team principal Christian Horner was dismissed in June. Laurent Mekies was instantly installed as his replacement. The Frenchman has been tight-lipped on a potential driver line-up next season, but has publicly expressed support for Tsunoda after the Belgian Grand Prix last month. – Express Newspapers SHORTS Medvedev needs help: Becker SIX-TIMES Grand Slam champion Boris Becker said Daniil Medvedev should seek professional help in the wake of his “public meltdown” during Sunday’s US Open first round defeat by Benjamin Bonzi. Medvedev crashed out 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 to the Frenchman but it was his antics in the third set that dominated the headlines, the 2021 champion launching a tirade against the umpire and whipping up a jeering crowd that prevented his opponent from serving. “We call this public meltdown… I think he needs professional help?” Becker said on X , sharing a video of Medvedev smashing his racket after the match had concluded. Elite coach Brad Gilbert agreed with Becker’s post, highlighting Medvedev’s previous episodes of poor behaviour. “He did the same thing after his loss in Washington DC, was a complete meltdown there too,” Gilbert said. “Unfortunately the brain is getting the better of him after losing these close matches the last few months. “I agree he definitely needs some help.” Former player-turned analyst Patrick McEnroe said Medvedev, who has had an up and down relationship with the New York crowd over the years, needed some time away from the game to reset. “Medvedev needs to take the rest of the year off,“ he added. Perhaps not surprisingly, Medvedev found support from maverick Australian Nick Kyrgios. “Medvedev is the best,” he posted on social media. Photographer in Daniil outburst maintains innocence THE photographer at the centre of Daniil Medvedev’s furious outburst at the US Open claims he is a “victim” who has “endured tremendous suffering” following the controversy. Medvedev launched into umpire Greg Allensworth during his loss to Benjamin Bonzi after the snapper wandered onto the court. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) subsequently revoked the photographer’s accreditation and he was marched out of the Louis Armstrong Stadium by security. The photographer concerned, Selcuk Acar, has now maintained that he is “completely innocent” and is preparing to pursue legal action over his credentials being withdrawn. Acar alleges that an official instructed him to step onto the court whilst play was in progress. “I’m a victim and totally innocent,” Acar told the Daily Mail . “This incident has already turned into a lynching, and although I’m innocent, I’ve suffered greatly. “If there’s a camera there, if it’s monitored, it will show that I returned to the official twice and didn’t enter. “I didn’t know and see if Medvedev saw me. I’m not a photojournalist that can (make) such a mistake.”
including NBA superstar LeBron James, who has recently been introduced to golf. But one notable moment projected and provided a reminder of a rare quality coveted so much in the Ryder Cup: Unity. It has been fostered by Team Europe over generations and burned brighter than ever two years ago in Rome.
Fleetwood’s availability and attitude prevailed, an admirable quality when several players at the top of the game, including Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa, have snubbed media duties in the face of adversity this year. “All these experiences and these close calls, there’s no point in making or allowing them to have a negative effect on what happens
AFTER the agony, the jubilation on the 18th hole at East Lake. Tommy Fleetwood finally had his moment, an outpouring of relief and delight at completing the job. A PGA Tour winner at the Tour Championship and, with it, the FedEx Cup, too. Fleetwood has accumulated a legion of fans in recent years. He had reiterated that his breakthrough on US soil would be done “together”. And that following has grown even stronger after the heartbreaking near misses this year, including an outpouring of “anger” at the Travelers, as a raucous crowd willed Captain America, Keegan Bradley, to victory. And then again at the FedEx St Jude Championship, when he squandered a two shot lead with three holes remaining. One of Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup stalwarts could only watch JJ Spaun and an inspired Justin Rose duel in a playoff after his game unravelled. His compatriot and friend’s eventual victory was only a slight consolation as his drought extended. But no matter the crushing disappointment,
next,” Fleetwood said earlier this month. “What would be the point?” “As disappointed as I am, I have to try to find the strength to make it all a positive experience and hopefully next time go again.” And go again he
Filming Fleetwood on his phone and grinning from ear to ear, Rose, with Shane Lowry also present, showed that bond Donald has harnessed so expertly. The unwavering support and selflessness, in a largely individual sport, continue to help the Europeans thrive, often elevating their level beyond their week-to-week performances. Their teammates pick them up when they fall short and celebrate them, no matter their own performances, when they triumph. Donald hopes it makes a difference once again. – The Independent

Time to decide US captain Bradley eyes picking himself to play in Ryder Cup U S Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley could become the first playing captain for the His solid play this season has many thinking Bradley would be a perfect choice for the lineup, including US President Donald Trump, who plans to attend the first of three days of competition at Bethpage Black on Sept 26. Bradley, who won his only major title in his major debut at the 2011 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, has had to consider the skills and team chemistry among his rivals and then factor himself in the options as well.
Americans since 1963 as he pon ders six selections to complete his squad for next month’s event. The 39-year-old American would become the first US playing captain in the biennial showdown against Europe since the late Arnold Palmer 62 years ago if he calls his own name today. Six automatic qualifiers for the US lineup include top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, two-time major winners Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau, US Open winner JJ Spaun and fellow Ryder Cup rookie Russell Henley and Harris English. Bradley stands 11th in the world rankings, eighth on the list among Americans, after sharing seventh at last week’s Tour Championship. He won his eighth PGA Tour title at the Travelers Championship in June.
After a season of facing questions a bout his plans to play or not, the time for a choice has finally come for Bradley, who called it the hardest decision of his life. “It has been a wild year,” Bradley said. “It’s difficult because I want to put the team in the best position to win the Ryder Cup. “So there’s sort of an unknown – Arnold Palmer did it in 1963, but it’s a totally different tournament now. “It’s just a heavy decision. All the picks are tough. Captain is going to be judged on who they pick. Pretty strange thing to pick yourself. “It’s something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time and I just want to make sure we make the right one.”
“I think it makes it a little harder,” he said. “It’s a really strange thing to kind of ponder making the picks and then thinking about picking yourself. It’s ridiculous. It doesn’t seem like reality sometimes. “But we’re going to do the best we can to make the right decision and it’s going to be controversial to certain people either way. I’m prepared for that. “I’m confident whichever decision I make, it’s for the betterment of the team, and we’ll see.
“Ultimately I have to protect the team. I have to do the right thing by the team. Whatever the best decision is, we’re going to make it.” – AFP Red Bull eye IndyCar champ to partner Verstappen
RED BULL are reportedly targeting IndyCar series icon Alex Palou just two years after the Spaniard was close to joining McLaren. Palou, 28, has this year sealed his fourth IndyCar title in five seasons with his Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) team. His 2025 campaign has been dominant, finishing 165 points clear of rival Pato O’Ward. Yet, the fact that he’s still competing in that motorsport format is perceived as a shock to fans and pundits, given that he’s twice previously come close to moving to F1. His first near move came in 2022 when he was linked with McLaren and Arrows Racing, only for CGR to exercise a clause in his contract to keep him with the team another season.
However, he was permitted to test drive for McLaren. The following year, the British team announced him as a reserve driver for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri and agreed a deal to sign him full-time from 2024. The driver was paid a signing-on fee and awarded a three-year deal. However, he later backtracked on joining, which resulted in McLaren suing him for breach of contract and the legal case is still ongoing. According to Indystar, Red Bull are now targeting Palou to partner with Max Verstappen next season. After Liam Lawson lasted just two races alongside the Dutchman this year, Yuki Tsunoda came in as his replacement but has managed just three top-10 finishes.
