‘Fuel subsidy is for Malaysians, not foreigners’ MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that the recently announced subsidised price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre is exclusively for Malaysians, while foreigners will be charged the current market rate. “This is not a form of discrimination, but the policy of a sovereign nation committed to protecting the welfare of its people,” he said in his speech when launching the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here yesterday.

Premier reaffirms commitment to democracy and freedom of speech KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated his consistent stand in upholding democratic principles, including freedom of speech and the right to express criticism in a civil and peaceful manner. He said criticism and differing opinions should not be viewed through the lens of hostility, but instead be allowed to grow and flourish as the heartbeat of a mature, progressive and sovereign nation, so long as they were conveyed with decorum, peace and love for the country. “I extend my deepest appreciation to all personnel from the security forces, including the police, fire brigade, medical teams and volunteers who carried out their duties with great swiftness, discipline and dedication to ensure public safety and order and the smooth running of the gathering. “To everyone who attended, whether to voice their opinions, show solidarity, or travelled from afar, I wish you a safe journey back to your destinations. May your travels be eased and protected,” he said in a Facebook post. Commenting further, Anwar said the same principles were reflected in the prime minister’s question time in Parliament, which allowed MPs to question and directly express their objections to him as the prime minister. “I urge you to continue pressing MPs to attend and actively participate in all sessions, especially during question time.” Anwar also invited the people to continue engaging in dialogue and discourse, seeking common ground, charting the path forward and building the nation together. “And if you have the chance in future, don’t forget to return to Kuala Lumpur. Iconic landmarks around the capital, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building at Dataran Merdeka, are currently undergoing extensive conservation plans to boost tourism and support the economy of this historically rich capital city filled with hope and national spirit, especially in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Many exciting activities await, God willing,” he added. Meanwhile, no arrests were made by the police in connection with the rally held in the capital on Saturday, said Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. He said the assembly proceeded peacefully, was well-controlled and took place without any incidents that threatened public order. “There were no arrests. All control measures were carried out professionally and ethically, reflecting police’s calm and responsible approach in ensuring that democratic space is exercised safely and prudently,” he said in a statement. He said 3,000 police officers and personnel were deployed to manage the 18,000 crowd. He said participants began gathering from as early as 10.30am in areas around the National Mosque, Sogo shopping complex, Masjid Jamek and Pasar Seni, before moving towards Dataran Merdeka at about 2pm. – Bernama He added that savings from the subsidy rationalisation would be channelled towards strengthening welfare programmes, rural development and gradually increasing the minimum wage, including in the public sector and government-linked companies. – Bernama Malaysia are not raised arbitrarily, adding that despite fiscal pressures, the government has kept prices among the lowest in the region. “If you don’t believe me, just look at the fuel prices in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, all of which are much higher. neither pay taxes nor contribute directly to the national economy. He also criticised the remarks of an opposition leader from Johor who allegedly questioned the decision to limit the fuel subsidy to Malaysian citizens. “An opposition leader asked why foreigners have to pay more. I don’t understand. I am the prime minister of Malaysia. “Foreigners do not pay taxes like Malaysians. In which country do non-citizens receive subsidies equal to those given to locals? My primary responsibility is to look after the welfare of Malaysians,” he said. Anwar also stressed that fuel prices in

He said the move is crucial to ensure that the government’s substantial subsidies are enjoyed solely by Malaysian citizens, in line with the Madani government’s commitment to social justice. “RON95 petrol is sold to Malaysians at RM1.99 per litre. The PKR president and Pakatan Harapan chairman said such a move is part of a legitimate democratic process. “We are open to it. This is the correct process. If they want to table it (a vote of no confidence), go ahead. He (Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin) has been saying that for three years now,” Anwar said. He was responding to comments by Hamzah, the opposition leader, during a gathering at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday, in which the latter claimed the opposition is currently considering submitting the motion to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul soon. Earlier, Anwar arrived at the closed-door event at 12.30pm, where he delivered his presidential address and engaged with PKR members in attendance. - Bernama

o PM slams false narratives, says government efforts are being misrepresented, opposition free to table no-confidence vote

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the public to assess the government’s efforts and policies based on facts rather than political sentiment. He said although the government has implemented various initiatives, there are still parties spreading inaccurate information, such as claims of rising fuel and commodity prices, when in reality, the opposite is true. “This is a free and democratic country, but we must provide clarification. During interviews (at the gathering in Dataran Merdeka), some claimed fuel prices had gone up, when in fact they had gone down. There Support 1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign: Minister MUAR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called on all Malaysians to support the “1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang” campaign as a symbol of patriotism and unity ahead of the National Day and Malaysia Day 2025 celebrations. Fahmi, who is also chairman of the main committee for the celebrations, encouraged the public to proudly display the national flag at their homes, vehicles, offices, schools and business premises as a show of support. “Fly the Jalur Gemilang proudly and properly wherever you are,” he said at the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 Campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas yesterday. The event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi said the celebration is not merely symbolic, but a manifestation of shared responsibility in fostering patriotism and strengthening love for the nation. “It is a time for us to reflect on history, honour past sacrifices and renew our commitment to this beloved nation.” Fahmi also emphasised that the spirit of unity, built over the past 68 years through the Federal Constitution, remains the cornerstone of the country’s peace and stability. – Bernama

MONDAY | JULY 28, 2025 3 Combat sports to address bullying: Minister KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has proposed that a special dialogue be held between her ministry, the Education Ministry and the National Combat Sports Federation to find a solution to the issue of bullying among school students. She said a punitive approach, such as suspension alone, is insufficient. Instead, students involved should be given proper guidance and opportunities to channel their energy positively through structured activities, such as combat sports. “I want us to hold a dialogue with the Education Ministry and the combat sports association to explore how we can better address school bullying cases, especially those where the ministry takes disciplinary action, such as suspension. “We must not give up on these children. We can guide them and help channel their energy into sports. Combat sports are governed by rules, and through them, students can learn discipline. “Bullying and acts of violence against fellow students are unacceptable, and we must help them understand that.” Yeoh told reporters this during the 2025 National Combat Sports Championship. The championship, which began on Thursday (July 24) and concluded yesterday, brought together more than 2,000 athletes nationwide who competed in the five main disciplines of combat sports – silat , wushu , karate-do , muay thai and wrestling, reported Bernama. Yeoh said combat sports not only build physical strength but also form discipline among young people to train them to control their emotions and actions. She expressed confidence that sports serve as a powerful platform to help students discover their potential, especially those who are still exploring their interests and talents. “By watching sporting events, a sense of curiosity and interest is sparked. That desire to try is crucial – if they don’t try, they’ll never know whether they have talent.” Yeoh believes that with the right guidance every student has the potential to shape a successful future and ultimately become a valuable asset to the nation’s development. ‘Prioritise education savings scheme’ KOTA KINABALU: State governments and public and private agencies are encouraged to prioritise the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) as the main option for incentives to employees and students. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said Simpan SSPN, managed by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), is crucial in ensuring access to education is not hindered by financial constraints. “Since 2004, PTPTN has focused on promoting savings to reduce dependence on loans. Over two decades, Simpan SSPN has maintained strong performance each year and gained public trust,” he said when officiating at the Simpan SSPN Heritage Children’s Carnival 2025 on Saturday. Mustapha said total deposits under Simpan SSPN reached RM21.93 billion across 6.98 million accounts as of June 30, a milestone reflecting consistent support since its launch in 2004. He urged parents to consider Simpan SSPN as the preferred savings vehicle to secure their children’s education. “Saving for education is a long-term investment that ensures our children’s future,” he said, adding that deposits in Sabah alone amounted to RM689.84 million from more than 500,000 accounts. – Bernama

Bringing Sara closer to the people

RANAU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will collaborate with the Finance Ministry to expand access to essential items for recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the ministry had proposed that recipients be allowed to use their Sara aid at mobile Jualan Rahmah Madani programme locations, in addition to existing participating retailers. He said, at present, Sara recipients could only purchase basic items at 4,152 participating supermarkets and retail outlets across the country, including 470 in Sabah. “This initiative enables Sara recipients, o Govt expands affordable goods programme with RM300m boost to Jualan Rahmah, aimed at reaching rural areas, easing access and aiding local businesses

Armizan said the additional RM300 million allocation for Jualan Rahmah would enable the ministry to increase its frequency nationwide, with a target of 20,000 series throughout this year, Bernama reported. “For Sabah, the ministry is targeting 2,276 Jualan Rahmah series throughout this year. As of July 26, a total of 1,089 have already been implemented. We will adopt several approaches to ensure the target is achieved by year-end.” He said the approaches included increasing the range of items offered and enhancing cooperation with strategic retail partners. “Through these improvements, the people will have more choices. The ministry can no longer act alone as it did in the past. For example, today’s Jualan Rahmah is carried out in collaboration with retail partners.” Commenting on the programme, Armizan said this was the second year the ministry

Commission confirms abuse in medical visa scandal

Ű BY IKHWAN ZULKAFLEE newsdesk@thesundaily.com

The “counter setting” operation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has been under scrutiny since late last year, focusing on claims that foreign nationals were granted medical treatment visas without complying with standard procedures. theSun had earlier reported concerns from healthcare industry experts about loopholes in the medical tourist visa process, alleging that some visa holders never sought treatment at the approved medical centres. In October last year, investigators seized 156 social visit pass application files (under the Medical Treatment Pass category), linked to a syndicate involving officers from the Immigration Department’s Visa, Pass and Permit Division in Putrajaya.

The commission has decided to refer the investigation findings to the Attorney General’s Chambers. “This is in line with Paragraph 30(1)(c) of Act 700, with a recommendation that criminal charges be brought against the Immigration officers involved – under provisions of Act 574 of the Penal Code, Act 155 of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and/or Act 150 of the Passport Act 1966.”

PETALING JAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has confirmed a case of power abuse in the Immigration Department linked to the “counter setting” scandal involving corrupt practices and visa irregularities for medical tourists. In a statement, the EAIC said its special task force – established under Section 17 of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009 (Act 700) and chaired by Commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Razali Ab Malik – had completed its investigation into the scandal. “It was found that there had been abuse of

Call for state backing in co-op development MALACCA: A request for funding will be submitted to the state government as part of the 2026 State Budget to support cooperative development in Negeri Sembilan, according to State Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Action Committee chairman S. Veerapan. To date, the state government has not allocated any specific funds for this purpose, with existing support coming solely from the Federal Government through the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (MCC) state branch. “This is important because, in Malacca, despite being a smaller state with lower revenue than Negeri Sembilan, the state government allocates funding to MCC Malacca. We intend to follow that example,”he told Bernama. He emphasised that state-level backing is essential to ensure cooperatives in Negeri Sembilan can grow and strengthen their operations. Veerapan was speaking after attending the Business Exploration and Networking Programme, organised by the Negeri Sembilan government in collaboration with cooperatives from Sarawak and Sabah. video message. “I wish to first extend my sincere apologies for not being able to attend Saturday’s very special event. “Nonetheless, I am truly delighted and would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Sarawak Tourism Board for the successful organisation of the Sarawak Travel Fair in Pontianak,” he said in the message. Meanwhile, AirAsia Malaysia announced the launch of two new direct routes connecting Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, making it the only airline currently operating international flights to the city. In a statement, the airline said the new routes were unveiled during the Sarawak Travel Fair, which was organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board and officially launched by West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan. The airline added that this expansion aligns with its continued growth in Indonesia, following the recent launch of the Kuala Lumpur– Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service in September. – Bernama Nanta noted that the NCH will complement the Pan Borneo Highway by focusing on the northern coastal corridor and establishing a critical link between Sarawak’s central and southern regions, Brunei and Sabah via the Merapok border. “This project is a prime example of how regional development strategies can succeed through effective collaboration between agencies and governments.” – Bernama

Its director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the raids were the result of integrated intelligence efforts, made possible through strategic intra- and inter-agency cooperation involving the Manjung district police headquarters, the Perak and Kedah branches of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks and local authorities. In the first operation, conducted at 9.45am at a residence in Lumut, Perak, authorities arrested four local men aged between 31 and 61, and seized a range of wildlife specimens and weapons. “Among the items confiscated were seven wild boar carcasses, 148 packages of water monitor lizard parts, 80 packages believed to contain wild boar meat, and a live monitor lizard. We also seized a Benelli Raffaello Elegant rifle, 30 bullets, 40 used bullet casings, and a bullet belt. “The team also discovered four mobile phones, five freezer units, a necklace with two pendants believed to be tiger claws weighing 189.12g, a skull fragment suspected to be from a wild boar, and 23 vials believed to contain water monitor lizard bile,”he said in a statement. Azmi estimated the total value of the items seized in the Lumut raid at RM150,895. The case is being investigated under Sections 60(1)(a), 60(1)(b) and 68(1)(b) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), relating to hunting, possession or keeping parts of protected wildlife without a licence or special permit. The case is also being probed under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for illegal possession and use of a firearm. In addition, the Manjung Municipal Council issued three compound notices under the Licensing of Trades, Businesses and Industries By-Laws, for various offences including keeping livestock without a valid licence, operating frozen meat storage facilities without approval, and conducting animal slaughter or evisceration without proper authorisation. A warning notice was also served under Section 70 of the Streets, Drainage and Building Act 1974 to the property owner for constructing a building without proper approval. – Bernama Fires rage in Sarawak amid rising air pollution MIRI: A forest fire covering more than 4ha – roughly the size of 10 football fields – is raging in the Marudi district of northern Sarawak. According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Sarawak Bomba), the blaze began late Saturday evening at an agricultural-fruit plantation in Logan Unga before spreading into the surrounding forest. “We have deployed firefighting teams from Marudi town to the site. Accessibility is difficult as the fire has spread into forested terrain. More than 4ha are currently burning. “The plantation’s management has mobilised workers and excavators to dig firebreaks in an effort to prevent further spread,” Sarawak Bomba said, adding that the fire is located along the Marudi–Miri road. In central Sarawak, another major forest fire in the Mukah district, which began three days ago, is still burning. “Our fire teams have already extinguished more than 2ha in Mukah, but approximately 2.5ha remain ablaze,” the department reported. As of 8am yesterday, Miri city recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in Sarawak at 98, compared with readings in the 70s on Saturday. Elsewhere in the state, most areas recorded API readings in the 70s and 80s throughout the day. – by Joseph Peter

Many harmful chemicals found in vape liquids

o Experts warn of cancer causing compounds, toxic metals and rising use among minors despite new law

for Tobacco Control (MCTC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that Malaysia is facing a worsening public health crisis due to rising e-cigarette use among children and adolescents. The statement, issued by MCTC president associate professor Dr Murallitharan Munisamy and WHO representative to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore Dr Rabindra Abeyasinghe, described e cigarettes as “harmful and addictive” and accused the industry of exploiting regulatory loopholes to target vulnerable youth. They said vape-related poisoning cases are on the rise, including among children under five and teenagers, while illicit drug-laced vape products are spreading due to weak enforcement. “We’ve witnessed the industry’s ability to relentlessly exploit and circumvent regulatory gaps and target our most vulnerable population – our children.” The commentary also pointed out that over 40 countries, including Brunei, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, have adopted national bans on e-cigarettes. “Malaysia stands at a critical juncture. We cannot afford to wait. Every delay means more children exposed, more families affected, more lives at risk.” On Wednesday, Bernama reported that the Malacca Health Department is drafting a proposal to ban the manufacture and sale of vape products in the state. Echoing similar concerns, Malacca State Health Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem told the state legislative assembly that vape liquids contain heavy metals such as nickel, chromium, cadmium and cobalt – all of which pose serious risks to the lungs, kidneys and mental health.

through the lungs. “These may be approved for oral consumption, but are unsafe when inhaled. The aerosols go directly into the lungs and blood circulation,” she explained. Nur Amani also flagged the use of food grade dyes, often added for aesthetic purposes, which have been linked to allergic reactions and cancer. She further highlighted the presence of volatile organic compounds including acrolein, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde – chemicals typically found in vehicle exhaust – along with heavy metals such as nickel, lead, chromium, cadmium and arsenic. “These are known carcinogens and can lead to infertility, cancer and mental health issues,” she said, noting that even water, sometimes added to vape liquids, poses risks when inhaled. She warned that nicotine salts, a formulation combined with benzoic acid to heighten the addictive effect, could disrupt hormone regulation, impair insulin production and increase cardiovascular risks. “Among teenagers, it impairs brain development, delays growth and contributes to mental health issues such as depression and emotional instability.” Despite the introduction of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), she said enforcement gaps remain. “These products are still widely advertised and sold on social media. They’re easily accessible to minors despite legal prohibitions.” Citing a recent case study by Universiti Putra Malaysia, she noted that 80% of vape products labelled as nicotine-free were found to contain nicotine. PETALING JAYA: Experts have warned that vape liquids sold in Malaysia may contain thousands of harmful chemicals, including addictive agents, industrial solvents and cancer-linked compounds, raising concern over ongoing regulatory loopholes and its increasing use among adolescents. Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Medicine, family medicine and tobacco control researcher associate professor Dr Nur Amani Ahmad Tajuddin said recent studies had detected more than 2,000 chemical compounds in vape liquids. “The number one most common poison is nicotine. It’s the key ingredient that causes addiction to vape, making it very difficult for users to quit,” she said. She added that vape liquids often contain propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, substances widely used in the food industry but unsafe for inhalation, and are readily available on online shopping platforms. Flavouring and colouring agents such as anillin, ethyl maltol and cinnamaldehyde are also commonly used to enhance appeal, but are not meant to enter the bloodstream

‘Save the Malayan Tiger’ campaign raises RM2m SHAH ALAM: Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Acting Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said contributions to the “Save the Malayan Tiger” campaign have reached RM2.1 million since its launch in 2021. He said the donations were made possible through cooperation with various strategic partners, including the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), to raise funds and awareness on the importance of Malayan tiger conservation. “FAM has contributed about RM200,000 to the campaign fund through proceeds from football match ticket sales.” Johari, who is also the Plantation and Commodities Minister, said this in a speech delivered by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii at the World Tiger Day 2025 celebration on Saturday. Also present at the celebration were Wildlife and National Parks Department director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim and FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub. Johari also said the Cabinet had, on June 16, 2021, agreed to implement strategic actions for Malayan tiger conservation over a 10-year period from 2021 to 2030. He said these measures encompassed three approaches: intensifying efforts to halt population decline, improving governance and implementation effectiveness in conservation and strengthening initiatives to ensure the long term survival of the Malayan tiger. “Monitoring conducted by the Wildlife and National Parks Department with support from NGOs has shown a rise in the Malayan tiger population. “This is an indicator of the success of ongoing efforts, including habitat conservation through international accreditation and recognition schemes.” He added that Malaysia is working to secure Conservation Assured Tiger Standards accreditation for Taman Negara and Endau Rompin National Park. – Bernama

behaviour and social skills in the dogs. They coordinate tasks through a WhatsApp group, discussing who would feed and walk the dogs each day. “They get one big meal daily and are walked in the evenings after work. “For us, the walks are fun too, they keep us active and give us something to look forward to,” the volunteers said. Asked what they like most about the animals, the volunteers replied: “They are truly lovable dogs. No matter how tired they are, their tails wag nonstop when they see us. “Seeing them after a long day at work lifts our spirits.” Each dog has its own personality. AK, the alpha, may look tough but is actually a softie who lives for pats and hugs. QZ is the peacemaker of the trio, with food and sleep topping his list of priorities. As for D7, he is treated carefully by the group. Having undergone stomach surgery as a puppy, he is smaller than his siblings and a fussy eater. The volunteers said they feel lucky to have the three furry companions around and jokingly remind the dogs that they are lucky to be part of the airline too. “Airasia has always championed mental well-being and work-life balance. DogQ is a testament to the out-of-the-box initiatives the company embraces for its staff. “We feel fortunate to be part of the Allstar family and thank our leaders for instilling the value of compassion, whether towards people or animals.”

PETALING JAYA: It is always admirable when people go out of their way to care for stray animals. Such unsung heroes can be found at AirAsia RedQ, the airline’s headquarters located at KL International Airport 2 in Sepang. Tucked in a corner of the RedQ car park is DogQ, a doghouse that is home to a group of stray dogs rescued several years ago. These animals are cared for by a team of volunteer staff known as the DogQ committee. The group comprises more than 20 employees, also known as “Allstars”, aged between 24 and 48, hailing from various departments across the organisation.

Moved by their plight, the employees proposed adopting the pups to AirAsia co-founders Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. Both men supported the idea and even contributed personal funds to build DogQ, which has since been the home of the canines. The dogs were named D7, AK, QZ and FD, after flight codes. “FD passed away in 2020 due to cancer. Her three siblings, two males and one female, are being cared for by our volunteers.” The committee nurtures good

The initiative began in 2016, when they found a mother dog and her pups wandering around the RedQ construction site. “At the time, the mother dog was lingering in the area and was fed by staff who visited the site. “She was later hit by a truck and killed, leaving her four puppies to fend for themselves,” the group said.

Thailand, Cambodia clash despite ceasefire hopes

Singapore agency stabilises sinkhole SINGAPORE: The city-state’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said preliminary checks have confirmed that buildings near a new sinkhole at Tanjong Katong Road are not affected. The agency said it began stabilisation works as a precautionary measure and to ensure the safety of nearby buildings and the worksite of the national water agency PUB, which is next to the location. “BCA engineers have carried out preliminary checks on One Amber condominium and landed houses across the road. The assessments confirmed that the buildings are not affected,” it posted on Facebook on Saturday night. It said the BCA, Land Transport Authority (LTA) and PUB are monitoring repairs and overall safety. Sustainability and the Environment Minister Grace Fu said she had instructed relevant agencies to investigate. “I understand the public, particularly residents and workers in the area, may be concerned over the structural integrity of the buildings and roads. “I have asked PUB to work with agencies, including BCA and LTA, to investigate and implement rectification works quickly,” she posted on Facebook. On Saturday, a woman was rescued and sent to hospital after her car fell into the sinkhole, which formed at about 5pm. A video circulated online showed workers from a nearby worksite rescuing the woman from the sinkhole and stopping cars from approaching the affected area. Both directions of the affected road have been closed to traffic. – Bernama NEW DELHI: At least six people were killed in a stampede after a large crowd gathered at the Mansa Devi temple in the northern Indian city of Haridwar, ANI reported yesterday. Uttarakhand Chief Minister said police and other rescue teams have reached the scene and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. The injured have been taken to hospital. India has a history of crowd accidents. At least 30 people died at the Maha Kumbh Hindu festival in January as tens of millions gathered to dip in sacred waters. Last month, at least 11 people died in crowd chaos outside an Indian cricket stadium. – Reuters ASEAN SETTING UP AI SAFETY NETWORK JAKARTA: Asean is establishing an AI Safety Network (AI Safe) to promote ethical innovation, institutionalise safety protocols and strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI). Its secretary-general Datuk Dr Kao Kim Hourn said the initiative reflects the bloc’s commitment to trust, transparency, and accountability in AI development. Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Saturday, Kao said Asean is ready to work closely with China through the Asean-China 2025 Digital Work Plan to build a resilient and equitable AI partnership. He said while AI brings efficiency, it also poses serious risks, as autonomous AI agents and generative technologies lack ethical reasoning and are prone to bias, manipulation and unintended harm. “Generative AI heightens threats such as misinformation, deepfakes and cybersecurity breaches,” Kao said in remarks released by the Asean Secretariat. – Bernama SIX KILLED IN TEMPLE STAMPEDE
