SHORTS Skipper wants to ‘lie on my bed’ after workout ENGLAND captain Ben Stokes said he was looking forward to a lengthy lie-down after leading from the front in a dramatic 22 run win over India in the third Test at Lord’s yesterday. The all-rounder was named player of the match after scoring 77 runs and taking five wickets across the Test, in addition to an important first-innings run out of Rishabh Pant, as England went 2-1 up in a five-match series. Stokes put himself through a particularly gruelling stint on yesterday’s final day by bowling 19.2 energy-sapping overs on his way to leading England’s attack with a second-innings return of 3 48. “I’m not going to lie, I cannot wait to just lie on my bed for four days and then be raring to go for (next week’s fourth Test at) Manchester,” Stokes told reporters. “The game was on the line. Today it was going to be my decision on when I stopped bowling.” Tense exchanges made it more exciting: Shubman HEATED exchanges between England and India players made the Lord’s Test more exciting and challenging, India captain Shubman Gill said after England took a 2-1 lead in the series with a dramatic 22-run win yesterday. Tension flared between the teams during the intense third Test, with Shubman sarcastically clapping England batters for unnecessary delays, and India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj roaring in the face of England opener Ben Duckett after taking his wicket. Siraj was fined 15% of his match fee for his aggressive behaviour. “You’re giving everything, mentally, physically. There would be times when there would be a little bit of heat from both sides. But I think that’s what makes it so exciting, more challenging,” Shubman told a news conference. “At the end of the day, there’s a lot of admiration within the two teams. Both the teams try their best to win.” Shubman said staying calm under pressure would be crucial going forward in the five-match series. “The longer the match goes, shows how well both the teams are balanced. It’s just a matter of which team keeps their calm and composure longer,” he said.

for the title. It will be the second time that Northern Ireland’s McIlroy has competed in his own country in the British Open after the tour nament was staged at Royal Portrush in 2019. Back then, the world No. 2 tried to block out the noise surrounding the event’s return after a 68-year absence to the links where he set the course record of 61 as a 16-year-old. But McIlroy struggled to handle the pas sionate support he received from local fans as he missed the cut by a stroke. “I think I remember the ovation I got on the first tee on Thursday and not being ready for how I was going to feel,” the 36 year-old told reporters yesterday. “I was a little surprised and a little taken aback. I was like, ‘These people really want me to win.’ I think that brought its own sort
“I think in ‘19 I probably tried to isolate and I think it’s better for everyone if I embrace it. I think it’s better for me because it’s nice to be able to accept adulation, even though I struggle with it at times.” The five-time major winner has spoken of struggling for motivation following the completion of his career Grand Slam with a dramatic victory at the Masters in April. McIlroy became just the sixth man to win all four majors when he beat Justin Rose in a play-off at Augusta. After a disappointing spell following that memorable triumph, he is hopeful an encouraging joint-second place at the Scottish Open last week will be the spring board for a title charge at Royal Portrush. “I’m certainly encouraged by how I’ve

Stokes leads England to thrilling win at Lord’s
A THRILLING series produced its latest gripping chapter as England beat India by 22 runs in a nail-biting third Test at Lord’s yesterday to go 2-1 up with two to play. India were on the brink of defeat at 147-9, still needing a further 46 runs to reach a victory target of 193, when last man Mohammed Siraj joined Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. Nevertheless, the pair batted on until after tea on the final day to give India hope of an improbable victory. But with India eyeing a stunning win, Siraj fell to Shoaib Bashir when he played defensively to the off-spinner only for the ball to spin back and just dislodge the leg bail to leave India 170 all out. As the England fielders celebrated, the fiery Siraj was crestfallen as was Jadeja, left stranded on 61 not out after batting for nearly four-and-a-half hours while compiling his fourth consecutive fifty this series. Shoaib had spent much of the match off the field with a fractured finger sus tained while dropping a hard-hit return catch from Jadeja in India’s first innings and, shortly after he had wrapped up victory, England announced the injury had ruled the 21-year-old out of the remaining two Tests. England captain Ben Stokes bowled two lengthy spells yesterday on his way to innings figures of 3-48 in 24 overs, with fast bowler Jofra Archer – in his first Test following more than four years of injury-induced exile –taking 3-55 in 16.
Lively medium-pacer Stokes, whose career has been blighted by knee inju ries, again proved his worth to England as a fully-fledged all-rounder. “I thought I had taken myself to some pretty dark places before but today was… If bowling to win a Test for your country doesn’t get you up, get you excited, then I don’t know what does,” Stokes told Sky Sports . The 30-year-old Archer added: “It
one mattered today so I’m not too fussed about it.” India were all but beaten at 112-8 when tailender Jasprit Bumrah came out to bat immediately after lunch. But Jadeja and Bumrah kept England at bay with a stubborn stand of 35 in 22 overs. “I think the position in the morning, to make a comeback like this was tremendous from Ravindra

Starc record as Australia bowl out Windies for 27 to win third Test MITCHELL STARC delivered the fastest five-wicket haul in Test history yesterday as Australia crushed the West Indies by 176 runs in the third Test in Kingston, Jamaica to complete a 3-0 series sweep. Broad (2015) and Boland (2021), who needed 19 deliveries to achieve the feat. Earlier, Australia were dismissed for 121, their lowest score against West Indies in 30 years, with Alzarri Joseph completing career-best figures of 5-27 and Shamar Joseph 4-34.
“You talk about 100 Tests and skill and fitness … but I think today showed the real Mitchell Starc – what he can bring to a team. Which is, out of nowhere, tear an opposition apart and win a game for you,” said Australia captain Pat Cummins. Boland dismissed Justin Greaves, Shamar Joseph and Jomel Warrican to claim a hattrick that left West Indies at 26-9, level with New Zealand’s record. “He is amazing, isn’t he?” Starc said of 36-year-old Boland, who has 62 wickets from 14 tests at an average of 16.53. “He would have played so many more tests in another team.”
That was little consolation for West Indies captain Roston Chase, who said being bowled out for less than 30 was “quite embarrassing.” “Obviously we’ve been putting ourselves in positions to win games and then we (are) just laying down and not putting up a fight in the last batting innings,” he said. “It’s quite heartbreaking, because I think we did it in all three Tests, and we’re not really learning from our mistakes.” – Reuters
In his 100th Test, Starc took 15 balls to wreck the West Indies top order and leave the home side’s run chase in tatters, before returning for his sixth wicket after Scott Boland became Australia’s 10th bowler to take a Test hattrick. West Indies were bowled out for 27, the second lowest total in Test history after New Zealand’s 26 against England in 1955. Starc shattered the previous record for a “five-for” by four balls, surpassing Ernie Toshack (1947), Stuart
