Teachers backbone of nation’s progress

o Heartfelt tribute by prime minister emphasises educators’ vital role in building Madani society and shaping Malaysia’s future

played by primary school teachers in laying the foundation for future learning. “NUTP is appealing to the human resource division of the Education Ministry to expedite the submission of the proposal to revise the primary school teachers’ service scheme to the PSD. “The effort is vital to ensure proper recognition of their role and to provide a clearer and fairer career pathway,” he added. Fouzi said reassigning senior officers (Grades 13 and 14) to schools due to lack of equivalent posts could weaken core functions at district, state and ministry levels, especially in policy planning. “Strategic restructuring of the staffing system and a comprehensive succession plan should be considered to preserve expertise within the education system.” Fouzi also stressed the importance of reducing non teaching workloads, which have grown significantly and affect teachers’ well-being and students’

learning. “Teacher professionalism must be a top priority, as it forms the backbone of an effective education system. Learning deficits caused by overwhelming non-teaching activities must be addressed urgently.” Fouzi also highlighted that the quality of maintenance of teachers’ quarters in remote areas is a critical issue requiring immediate attention. He further flagged chronic shortcomings in digital infrastructure and applications, leaving teachers to troubleshoot technical glitches instead of focusing on instruction. “Adequate and up-to-date ICT equipment is equally essential for effective 21st-century teaching and learning.

defending values. “Our task is not yet complete, for the effort to mould a person’s character does not end with the school year. It is a continuous responsibility, passed from one generation to the next, in the pursuit of building a Madani society.” The national-level 54th Teachers’ Day celebration for 2025 was held in Kuching from Wednesday until yesterday, with the theme ‘Teachers Driving Education Reform.’ On the sidelines of the celebration, the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has called on the Education Ministry and the Public Service Department (PSD) to implement a series of urgent reforms aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s education system and uplifting the teaching profession. Its secretary-general, Fouzi Singon, emphasised the critical role

“Continue your mission to sow knowledge with sincerity and determination. We are all witnesses to the immeasurable contributions of teachers; you are the true heroes shaping Malaysia’s future,” he said, as was reported by Bernama. In a related Facebook post, Anwar said teachers are noble individuals who never ask to be glorified, yet every day they patiently shape the future of the nation’s children with love and compassion. “In life, no matter who we are, be it a leader, doctor, engineer, farmer or even the prime minister – all of us once learnt to read, write and count. And it all began in the classroom. “So, in conjunction with Teachers’ Day, I express my utmost appreciation to all educators.” Anwar added that every teacher is a warrior, a patient warrior shaping character and a steadfast warrior

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has lauded teachers as the true heroes of the nation, playing a crucial role in shaping Malaysia’s future and driving the quest for knowledge to achieve national education goals. In his Teachers’ Day message yesterday, shared through a video on Facebook, Anwar expressed deep appreciation for the dedication of educators, describing them as the backbone in cultivating a Madani generation and steering the nation forward. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our educators – who teach, guide and impart knowledge solely to nurture a Madani generation.

NUTP also proposed special incentives to help teachers afford these tools, aiming to ease their financial burden and enhance the quality of education, so that teachers can teach with joy and dedication, fostering a more meaningful learning environment. M’sia firm on justice for MH17 victims KAZAN: Malaysia remains firm in its position to seek justice and resolution, particularly for the families of victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down over Ukraine in 2014, said Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, the political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the fact that the report by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which found Russia responsible for the downing of MH17, was released a day before the prime minister’s visit to Moscow must be taken into account. “As the prime minister mentioned yesterday, the matter should not be politicised. What matters most is how we can find ways to resolve it,” he told reporters covering the prime minister’s visit to Moscow and Kazan, Tatarstan. Muhammad Kamil said there had been calls for the PM to take a firm stand on the tragedy. “In a closed-door meeting with President Vladimir Putin yesterday, the prime minister directly raised this issue.” Meanwhile, he described the first segment of Anwar’s visit to Moscow as highly fruitful. “The PM also met with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and together with President Putin, they discussed several important matters, such as the volatile trade landscape. “We have seen developments that could further strengthen and expand economic trade opportunities, including the confirmation and finalisation of arrangements for direct flights by Russian carrier Aeroflot, which will start soon from Moscow to Kuala Lumpur.” He added that this would further boost tourism between both countries. He also said discussions on other sectors, such as the halal industry, showed positive progress. “We saw great potential for the next five years, with trade and investments worth US$5 billion to US$10 billion between Malaysia and Russia.” Anwar arrived in Kazan on Thursday for the second segment of his official trip to Russia, which concluded yesterday. Kazan, located more than 830km from Moscow, is the largest city and capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. It is known as an industrial, commercial and cultural centre for the Tatars. – Bernama

PM reaffirms constructive engagement in regional grouping KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to Asean cohesion and constructive engagement with regional partners amid complex geopolitical challenges and growing concerns over cross border repression. need to strengthen that bond together in this changing geopolitical environment.

Malaysia currently holds the Asean chairmanship for 2025. Asean comprises 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. On the issue of cyber scams operating out of Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Anwar said Asean has stepped up collaboration to tackle transnational crime. He dismissed claims that the Cambodian government was complicit in the scam industry, despite critical reports from international watchdogs. – Bernama

“The focus is on intra-trade, investment and taking a common position vis-a-vis the big powers and our neighbours,” he said during the interview with senior journalist Mary Ann Jolley. Anwar also described Malaysia’s relations with neighbouring countries as “excellent” and emphasised that many regional issues are best resolved through direct personal engagement. He reiterated that Asean centrality must remain a core guiding principle as the region faces new global trade dynamics, including tariff policies that could impact member states.

In an interview with Al Jazeera’s 101 East, released Thursday on the channel’s YouTube platform, Anwar stressed the importance of Asean remaining united as the region faces mounting pressure from major powers and intensifying trade tensions. “We have been quite cohesive. I think we

‘Asean adopts policy of centrality’ KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised Asean’s neutral stance and inclusive diplomacy as key to maintaining peace and economic resilience amid global tensions.

Speaking at a public lecture, “Asean in a Multipolar World: Perspectives from Malaysia” at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations on Thursday, Anwar said Asean adopts a policy of centrality. “We trade with all, we should be friends with all.” He stressed the need for consistent, independent foreign policy when engaging with powers such as the US and China. On maritime disputes, including the South China Sea, Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to peaceful dialogue. “We resolve them through negotiations or joint development efforts. We don’t go to war.” Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s call for Asean US and Asean-China summits during its 2025 Asean chairmanship. “That is what geopolitical relations are about – engaging with all.” Rejecting the notion that China is a regional threat, he said: “A threat to whom? Not to us,” and reaffirmed friendly ties with all partners, including China, the US and Russia. Anwar also spoke on Malaysia’s engagement with the Global South, including through BRICS (a forum for cooperation among a group of leading emerging economies) which Malaysia has been invited

‘Bangladeshi nationals to be treated fairly’

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring that no manipulation, exploitation or employment fraud is perpetrated against Bangladeshi nationals in the country. Saifuddin Nasution, who received a courtesy call yesterday from Bangladesh Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry adviser Dr Asif Nazrul, expressed hope for continued cooperation from Bangladesh to help realise this goal. “This meeting provided an opportunity for in-depth discussion on issues concerning the management of foreign workers from Bangladesh, which involved several policy and operational matters, including the government’s key commitment to reducing migration costs,” he said in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday. Saifuddin Nasution also conveyed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s appreciation to the Bangladeshi government for its continued support in efforts to streamline the management of foreign workers in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Human Resources Ministry said in a post on X that its minister Steven Sim Chee Keong also discussed various key issues related to the welfare and management of foreign workers, especially from Bangladesh, during Asif’s visit to the ministry. The ministry said both parties stressed the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure a safe, fair and rights respecting employment ecosystem. “Sim reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to remaining an ethical employment destination by ensuring foreign workers have access to social protection, welfare and skills training in line with the principles of compassion, justice and well-being under the Malaysia Madani framework.” – Bernama KUCHING: The Education Ministry is now allowing transfer applications from teachers who have served for at least two years. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the applications could also be made without any additional condition. “This decision was made after taking into account various views as well as the Madani government’s commitment to the well-being of teachers,” she said at the 54th National Teachers’ Day celebration yesterday. Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Previously, teachers were not allowed to apply for transfers within the first three years of service. Fadhlina said the ministry has appointed 1,470 teacher assistants for 2025, with selected schools to receive two assistants each, based on set criteria. “The ministry will also send selected teachers and officers for short-term overseas courses to gain knowledge and experience in specialised fields. This initiative involves an allocation of RM4 million.” Fadhlina announced that 32 teachers would be sent to international schools in the United Kingdom at no cost, under the Global Immersion for Future-Ready Teachers programme. She said teachers would be entitled to a 20% discount on flight tickets through the MH GOM portal, with further details to be announced later. – Bernama Transfer rules for teachers relaxed

More time given for illegal migrants to go home o Extended repatriation programme aims to enable undocumented people to return home legally, says minister Ű BY FAIZ RUZMAN newsdesk@thesundaily.com

PUTRAJAYA: Undocumented migrants in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan will now have additional time to return to their home countries legally under the extended Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 (PRM 2.0). Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the programme, now set to run from May 19 to April 30, 2026, was approved by key regulatory agencies, including the Attorney-General’s Chambers. “The extension aims to facilitate the voluntary return of undocumented migrants without subjecting them to legal action. PRM 2.0 is not open to individuals who registered but failed to leave under the previous programme. “It is also not available to those blacklisted by the Immigration Department or individuals with arrest warrants or who are wanted by the authorities,” he said after presenting the Immigration Department’s Excellent Service Awards yesterday. PRM 2.0 provides undocumented migrants the opportunity to return to their home countries voluntarily, and those who qualify will not face prosecution. They are required to pay a compound fee determined by the nature of

their offence. Saifuddin Nasution said under PRM 2.0, individuals found entering or staying in Malaysia without a valid pass are subject to a compound of RM500, which also applies to those who overstay the permitted period. He said additionally, an RM300 compound is imposed for breaches of pass conditions and applicants must also pay RM20 for each issuance of a Special Pass. He added that foreign children under the age of 18 who had overstayed or were brought into Malaysia without a valid pass are exempt from paying the compound fee but are still required to pay the RM20 charge for the Special Pass. He said individuals with special legal status, such as foreign spouses of Malaysian citizens who have overstayed, are required to present themselves at the Immigration Department’s Visa, Pass and Permit Division for pass adjustment. “The Home Ministry urges all parties, including foreign representatives, employers and migrant communities to disseminate this

information and encourage early participation to avoid congestion as the deadline approaches.” Saifuddin Nasution also announced that a total of 7,200 policemen would be deployed for the Asean Summit, which would be held on May 26 and 27 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. He said over 2,000 personnel at the Immigration Department are currently undergoing training to ensure a seamless process when delegates arrive. “It’s crucial that the movement of people and goods is seamless. We have mapped out all primary entry locations, such as Subang airport, where many will be arriving.” He added that the road closures for the Asean Summit would be announced on May 20. He said the Home Ministry plans to carry out its dry run on May 20, and the police are currently in the final preparation stage. This success stems from a holistic housing ecosystem which has pushed the home ownership rate to 76.9%. “Our initiatives are guided by the National Housing Policy 2018–2025, which outlines systematic and efficient planning, development and management of the housing sector.” Nga said if given the mandate to lead UN-Habitat, Malaysia would spearhead crucial dialogues and decisions on adequate housing and the future of sustainable, livable cities. – Bernama

‘Income tax filing vital’

State places premium on education, says Sarawak premier KUCHING: Education must not be restricted and the community should be equipped with the latest knowledge to contribute to the development of human civilisation, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg. He said in this regard, Sarawak places strong emphasis on fields of knowledge geared towards solving future global challenges, especially in technology and economics. “That’s why we in Sarawak have a dual language programme. Some say Sarawak always emphasises English, but we view it from both a language and knowledge perspective. “With today’s sophisticated technology, including artificial intelligence and new technologies, we must equip ourselves accordingly,” he said at the Malam Berambeh Segulai Sejalai event on Thursday. He said other initiatives include free higher education, which would be introduced starting next year, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines. The event was held in conjunction with the 54th National Teachers’ Day 2025 celebration, with Sarawak as the host. Present were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Education Minister Wong Lah Woh and Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan. – Bernama For enquiries or feedback, the public can contact Rapid KL through its official social media channels. – Bernama Jalan Ampang dedicated bus lane operating hours extended KUALA LUMPUR: The operating hours of the dedicated bus lane along Jalan Ampang will be extended to cover the evening peak hours starting May 19, from 4.30pm to 7pm on weekdays. Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd (Rapid Bus) said in a statement yesterday that the extension is being carried out in collaboration with the Selangor Public Works Department (PWD). It will cover a 0.62km stretch from the Jalan Memanda 1 junction to Jalan Memanda 9, and from the Jalan Cengal junction to the Jalan Wawasan Ampang traffic light junction. “The move will benefit passengers on route 300 (Pandan Indah – Lebuh Ampang Hub) and route 303 (Mulia Jaya Terminal – Lebuh Ampang), as well as feeder bus services from Pandan Indah, Bukit Indah, Mulia Jaya and Lembah Jaya.” Since the bus lane was introduced in 2023, the average daily number of passengers along Jalan Ampang has increased from 12,819 to 14,424 and reduced travel time by 10 to 15 minutes. Rapid Bus acting CEO Ku Jamil Zakaria said the improved travel time and smoother journeys are expected to attract even more commuters to use public transport. He also reminded all road users to follow traffic rules and not misuse the bus lanes as they are meant to benefit everyone. A three-month evaluation will be carried out together with the PWD, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research and the Transport Ministry to monitor travel times, bus speeds, road safety and traffic conditions in the affected area. People are encouraged to plan their journeys using the PULSE app, which can be downloaded from Google Play and App Store. Real-time bus locations can also be tracked via Google Maps.

penalties if they later fall under audit. “On a national level, undeclared income contributes to revenue loss, weakens economic planning and shifts the tax burden onto those who are already compliant. “It also erodes trust in the fairness of the system. When only some people follow the rules, it discourages broader participation.” Logasvathi said to bridge these gaps, IRB has rolled out several digital and youth-focused initiatives in recent years. “Since January 2024, the MyTax portal has allowed Malaysians to register, file and manage their taxes entirely online. At the same time, outreach initiatives such as HASiL Your Tax Buddy and Program Sahabat HASiL have turned to social media to engage younger audiences. “The government is doing a lot to meet young people where they are, online. But the system still needs to be demystified. Tax education should be introduced in schools and universities so young Malaysians understand the process before they even start working.” For those new to the system, she said the steps to get started are more straightforward than many expect. “The first step is to register for a Tax Identification Number using the e-Daftar system on the MyTax portal. From there, you can access the e-Filing platform, declare all sources of income, including freelance or part time work, and submit your returns before the deadline. “There are tools to help, too. The MyTax portal is user-friendly, and IRB also offers a mobile app, a chatbot and a tax calculator to make the process easier.”

o Belief that those earning below taxable threshold, fresh graduates, part-time workers, freelancers do not need to declare income a misconception: Academic

Ű BY HARITH KAMAL newsdesk@thesundaily.com

“There’s a cultural mindset that tax is a ‘later in life’ issue. But the reality is, income declaration is a legal and financial responsibility that starts the moment you earn, even if it’s just from side jobs or freelance gigs.” According to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), individuals with an annual employment income exceeding RM37,333 (or about RM3,111 per month) and who have a monthly tax deduction are required to pay tax. This threshold is calculated after deducting allowable tax reliefs and rebates from one’s gross income. However, even those earning below the taxable threshold are strongly encouraged to declare their income. Logasvathi said there are many benefits in doing so, beyond just compliance. “Young earners may not realise the advantages they’re missing out on. Filing a tax return helps build a financial record, something banks and institutions look at when you apply for loans, credit cards or government aid. “One might even be eligible for tax refunds or reliefs they’re unaware of.” She added that the consequences of not declaring income, even when no tax is owed, can be significant over time. “Individuals may lose out on financial opportunities, face difficulties verifying their earnings for official purposes and risk legal

PETALING JAYA: Although Malaysia has modernised its tax system and launched outreach efforts aimed at young adults, many new entrants to the workforce still misunderstand their income declaration duties, especially those earning below the taxable threshold. Universiti Utara Malaysia School of Economics associate professor Dr Logasvathi Murugiah said this misconception is especially common among fresh graduates, part-time workers, freelancers and individuals in the informal or gig economy. “Many young people assume that if they don’t owe any tax, they don’t need to declare their income. “Some believe that tax filing only applies to permanent employees or that low-income earners go unnoticed by the system, which simply isn’t true.” Logasvathi, who is a financial literacy expert, said the misunderstanding stems from several factors, including low tax literacy, confusion between declaring income and paying tax and the common belief that taxes only become relevant once a person starts earning a higher income.

‘Repair collapsed slope near water treatment plant’ KOTA BHARU: The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry has urged Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd to promptly repair the collapsed slope near the Bukit Remah Water Treatment Plant in Tanah Merah. Akmal Nasrullah said although disasters such as floods rarely have a direct impact on water infrastructure, the government is ready to help in recovery efforts.

“We have given Air Kelantan the option of whether to carry out repair works through Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad or apply for a special grant from the federal government. However, a decision must be made soon as the risk of further landslides is high,” he said after a working visit to the Tanjung Mas Water Treatment Plant construction site on Thursday. He said the upgrading works for the plant are progressing well. “Construction of the tube wells is expected to be completed by the end of this year before the plant’s pre-implementation phase commences.”

He also visited the proposed site for the construction of a riverbank water reservoir in Machang, which will be the first of its kind in Kelantan. He said a consultant has been appointed for the project and the ministry is awaiting official site confirmation from the state government before commencing detailed planning work. – Bernama

Its Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said a landslide in November last year damaged the plant’s inlet and outlet pipelines, and the pipe repairs have already been done. He said it is crucial to restore the slope before the upcoming monsoon season, which could potentially compromise the entire structure of the water treatment plant.

Driver pleads not guilty to causing deaths of FRU personnel

Two robbery, drug suspects shot dead by cops NILAI: Two men suspected of involvement in a series of robberies and drug trafficking activities were shot dead by police in the parking area of a condominium in Seremban at about 10pm on Thursday. Federal Criminal Investigation Department deputy director (Intelligence/Operations) Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspects, aged in their 20s and 40s, were linked to multiple robberies at homes, factories and courier hubs across Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Perak. “The older suspect had 76 previous criminal records, mostly for narcotics and violent offences, while the younger man had 11 similar priors,” he said. Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof was also present. Fadil said the suspects attempted to flee in a silver car when confronted, triggering a shootout. The suspects opened fire, striking the police vehicle, though no officers were injured. Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol and a revolver from the scene. Authorities believe the suspects may be linked to violent crimes in other states and were likely involved in a robbery at a courier centre in Klang about two months ago. They are also believed to have ties to secret society activities. Raids have since been conducted at several residential units across Selangor in efforts to track down remaining members of the group. Arrests and drug seizures have been made, with further details to be announced in due course. Fadil said the suspects were believed to have been using rented condominium units as temporary hideouts and were constantly on the move. – Bernama Two Vietnamese detained at KLIA2 for overstaying PUTRAJAYA: Two Vietnamese women were detained at KL International Airport Terminal 2 last Tuesday for overstaying their visas. The Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said in a statement yesterday that checks also revealed discrepancies in the immigration endorsements on their official travel records. The pair were picked up during a random inspection by AKPS’s monitoring unit, which screened about 150 foreign nationals at the terminal. “The two women were seen loitering suspiciously in the departure hall during the operation,” the agency said. They were scheduled to board an AirAsia flight to Ho Chi Minh City but had exceeded their permitted stay in Malaysia. “A check of the immigration system found that the entry and exit stamps in their passports did not match their official travel history,”the statement added. – Bernama

TELUK INTAN: The driver of a gravel-laden lorry pleaded not guilty at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday to nine charges of causing the deaths of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in a fatal road crash along Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam on Tuesday. Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, 45, entered his plea after the charges were read separately before Magistrate Norhamizah Shaiffuddin. Defying age, pilot still soars in preparation for LIMA KUALA LUMPUR: While most people look forward to retiring at 60, trading packed schedules for hobbies and time with grandchildren, one Malaysian pilot is still soaring, quite literally. discipline, focus and a touch of adrenaline. That’s why training and experience matter. We must know the limits, and never cross them,”he said.

Datuk Halim Othman, better known by his callsign TooGoo, is 59 and shows no signs of slowing down. As commander of Malaysia’s elite national aerobatic team Krisakti, Halim continues to impress in the skies, executing high-adrenaline stunts and precision manoeuvres thousands of feet above ground. “I’ve never stopped flying. And I don’t intend to,” he told Bernama, his calm demeanour reflecting a lifetime of

Back then, he was a young Royal Malaysian Air Force fighter pilot flying the legendary Skyhawk jet. Though pilots often take centre stage, Halim is quick to emphasise that aerobatics is a team effort. “Behind every aerial stunt is a crew – engineers, safety officers and ground teams – all working seamlessly to ensure each performance is a success,” he said. For LIMA 2025, Halim promises a showcase like no other. “This year, we’re going beyond the usual. Some stunts go beyond what jets can do but our propeller aircraft, like the X-300, can handle them,” he said. Among the new aerial acts are the cutwind – an inverted roll-turn that creates a dramatic silhouette – and the frisbee, a boomerang-style manoeuvre involving flips, rolls and reversals mid flight. Enhanced with vibrant smoke trails, these displays are designed to blend skill, control and spectacle. But the true showstopper? A sunset performance with fireworks. “For the first time in Malaysia, we’ll be flying with fireworks at sunset,” Halim revealed. Inspired by Malaysians’ love of festive pyrotechnics, Halim’s team has modified aircraft to launch fireworks mid-air. The special segment will light up the skies above Pantai Cenang, Langkawi. Organised by the Defence Ministry and Global Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn Bhd, LIMA 2025 returns to Langkawi under the theme Innovate Today, Thrive Tomorrow. For Halim, LIMA is more than a platform, it is a passion.

Teachers lauded for selfless sacrifice in nurturing minds

Ű BY SIVAA TANGAI RAJU newsdesk@thesundaily.com

MALACCA: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has expressed gratitude to all educators, praising their unwavering dedication to shaping future generations. Speaking in conjunction with Teachers’ Day yesterday, its secretary-general Fouzi Singon said teachers serve as role models to help students discover their potential in the face of life’s challenges. He stressed that there is a need to hire more teachers and invest in school infrastructure. There should also be caps on class size as having too many students per class diminishes individual attention and increases workload. “Excessive paperwork and bureaucratic tasks take time away from teaching,” he told theSun. “I believe it’s time to streamline administrative processes using digital tools and reduce non-teaching duties. “Student behaviour is a challenge too. Disruptive behaviour in the classroom can hinder learning for all students.” He advised students not to see tutors as “Hitlers” as their intention is not to harm anyone but to help pupils succeed. “If students think teachers are like Hitlers, it’s often a sign of deep frustration and misunderstanding because most teachers set rules with strict instructions to create a learning environment,” he added. Meanwhile, Pakiawathi Muniandy, 42, who has been teaching b iology and physics since 2006, said she pursued the profession

with a vision to guide students in achieving their ambitions. “I strive to make education fun and practical because students should engage with hands-on learning to explore subjects, rather than being confined to rigid curriculum,” she said “Teachers scold students not out of anger, but only with the care to develop their character and commitment in class. At the end of the day we hate none of them.” Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) educator Dr Tan Ling Ling said that she practises a democratic teaching method to ensure no one feels excluded or uncomfortable. “I foster a sense of community in my classroom where every student feels comfortable sharing their opinions. “I strongly believe that every student has their own unique skills and we teachers want to see them reach a reputable position in life,” she said.

Tan takes part in educational workshops and conferences to stay up-to-date with the latest teaching strategies. Dr Nava Suriya, 28, said she is a veterinarian today only because of the tutors who believed in her and gave her confidence to pursue veterinary medicine. “I would like to thank my teachers for the patience, dedication and inspiration they’ve given for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance. “They were the first to notice my passion and gave me opportunities to learn more, whether through reading, discussions or even encouraging me to volunteer at animal shelters,” she said. Karen Sandra Peter, 27, a content creator, credited her teachers for influencing her foray into the digital communication industry. “Happy Teachers’ Day to those saviours who don’t just teach, but transform lives. I’m deeply thankful for all you’ve done for me. Their exposure kept me moving forward

towards my ambition. “One thing that I learned from my teacher is to never be afraid to make mistakes as it’s the only thing that makes one achieve,” she said. Pre-university student Hannah Nazilah, 19, has opted for a career in teaching after witnessing her teachers’ zeal and dedication.

“My favourite subject has always been art since elementary school and my teachers motivated me to join art competitions without fail, even when I did not win at times. “Those defeats and repeated attempts taught me courage to take important decisions in life,” she said.

climate change through science driven solutions. The LoI, signed at the SFD headquarters in Sandakan last Thursday, solidifies a partnership to advance sustainable land management in tropical ecosystems. It emphasises long-term monitoring of agroforestry configurations such as native tree rows and forest islands within plantations. “This collaboration reinforces Sabah’s leadership in sustainable forestry. TRAILS 2 will prove that oil palm production and biodiversity conservation can coexist through innovative land-use strategies,” said SFD chief conservator Datuk Frederick Kugan. His speech was read by deputy chief conservator Indra Sunjoto as representative. “We aim to move beyond theoretical debates by implementing actionable R&D,” said Prof Alain Rival, Cirad senior project

manager, representing its regional director Dr. Jean Marc Roda. “Field experiments and rigorous monitoring will build scientific evidence for regenerative agroforestry in complex landscapes like Sabah.” SFD will coordinate with the Sabah Biodiversity Centre, State Agriculture Department and the Forest Research Centre in Sepilok to align the project with local policies and provide ecological expertise. Cirad will collaborate with NGO HUTAN, led by wildlife expert Dr. Marc Ancrenaz, to monitor wildlife impacts. The initiative supports Malaysia’s environmental goals and aligns with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Findings from TRAILS 2 are expected to guide policymakers, growers and conservationists in adopting regenerative practices for oil palm landscapes.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) and France’s Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (Cirad) have signed a letter of i ntent (LoI) to launch a collaborative agroforestry research project dubbed TRAILS 2. The initiative aims to transform oil palm landscapes into bio diverse productive ecosystems, with a pilot site at the Melangking Oil Palm Plantation in Sukau. The project on “agroforestry plantations for biodiversity and ecosystem services” will study how oil palm-based agroforestry systems can integrate with native trees to enhance ecological connectivity, soil health and wildlife habitats. Covering 100 hectares, it seeks to balance agricultural productivity with conservation, addressing deforestation, biodiversity loss and

8 Telegram blocks black markets WASHINGTON: Two sprawling digital black markets operating on Telegram have been removed, the service said on Thursday. Xinbi Guarantee and Huione Guarantee, which are Chinese-language markets known for serving cybercriminals and scammers, appeared to be inactive on Thursday. Telegram provided little further detail in a message to Reuters except to say “criminal activities such as scamming or money laundering are forbidden by Telegram’s terms of service and are removed whenever discovered”. Blockchain research firm Elliptic said the two markets had collectively facilitated more than US$35 billion (RM149 billion) in transactions since 2021, many times higher than other black markets, such as the drug-focused Silk Road, which drew international notoriety for distributing drugs over the dark web. “This is a big blow for online fraudsters, who relied on these markets for stolen data, money laundering services and telecoms infrastructure,” said Elliptic. In a brief, English-language statement posted on its website, Huione Guarantee confirmed that it had been blocked by Telegram starting Tuesday and would “cease operations from now on”. The firm did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment and Reuters could not immediately locate contact information for Xinbi Guarantee. Huione Guarantee is a subsidiary of Cambodia-based Huione Group, which also owns Huione Pay and Huione Crypto, US officials have alleged. Last year, Reuters revealed that Huione Pay had received cryptocurrency then worth more than US$150,000 from a digital wallet used by North Korean hacking outfit Lazarus. The report was followed earlier this month by a US move to bar the Huione Group from the US financial system. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Huione Group is the “marketplace of choice for malicious cyber actors”. The conglomerate is owned by Vietnam’s richest man Pham Nhat Vuong. Last month, Vingroup broke ground on a US$9 billion dollar real estate project in a southern coastal area that is home to a Unesco-listed mangrove forest. Communist-run Vietnam has one of the lowest expressway densities in the region, although the country is pushing to expand it, and road transport costs are among the highest. land clearance. “We will exert our best efforts to develop the project (and) pay the loans in due time,” said Vinspeed deputy director Dao Thuy Van. The statement added that Vinspeed’s proposal “would significantly help reduce pressure for the state budget”. Vietnam’s rubber-stamp National Assembly in 2010 scrapped the high-speed project, then estimated at US$56 billion, over fears that it was too costly. Following a meeting on Monday, various ministries and agencies largely welcomed and supported Vingroup’s proposal, according to state-controlled newspaper Tuoi Tre . The government said it wanted to reach a decision before May 22, which would then be submitted to the National Assembly, which is currently in session. Vingroup, parent group of

o Project to drive growth and enhance nation’s reputation among foreign investors

HANOI: biggest conglomerate Vingroup said yesterday it has submitted a proposal to build the country’s multibillion-dollar high-speed railway from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, with state media reporting that the government had welcomed the plan. The project, which was slated to cost US$67 billion (RM285 billion) when it was approved in November, is a boost to infrastructure that is expected to drive growth and enhance Vietnam’s reputation among foreign investors. The line will stretch more than 1,500km from the capital in the north to the country’s business hub in the south, and reduce the journey time Vietnam’s

by rail from 30 hours to around five. Vingroup confirmed to AFP yesterday that it has submitted a proposal to the government to build the line. Vinspeed, a newly established company as part of the Vingroup empire, said the project would cost US$61 billion, and would start in December and be finished by 2030, five years ahead of the schedule set out last year. The company said it would commit to mobilising 20% of the total capital, equivalent to US$12.27 billion. It proposed a zero-interest loan from the state for the remaining 80%, excluding costs related to compensation and resettlement for

Vietnam, Thailand upgrade ties to comprehensive strategic partnership HANOI: Vietnam and Thailand yesterday announced that they have upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, Vietnamese state media reported.

The announcement was made after Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met her Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh during her two-day visit to Hanoi. Thailand is Vietnam’s largest trading partner among Asean members, with bilateral trade exceeding US$20 billion (RM85 billion) last year, the Vietnamese government said yesterday. Thai firms have invested more than US$14 billion in Vietnam. Chinh and Shinawatra yesterday witnessed the signing of cooperation documents, including memorandums of understanding on cooperation in trade, anti-narcotics, banking, education and aviation, according to documents reviewed by Reuters.
