Celebrating iconic jazz family THE legacy of Malaysia’s jazz family The Solianos was celebrated during the Jazz & Blues Tribute Series at Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast in conjunction with International Jazz Day
recently, highlighting Malaysia’s rich contribution to the global jazz scene. The Solianos, recognised for their multi-generational influence in the local music scene, performed a special live showcase alongside the hotel’s in-house band Ground Breaker. Guests were treated to an evening of timeless jazz and blues, showcasing the family’s enduring musical excellence. The Solianos donated a rare handwritten musical score by the late Alfonso Soliano to the hotel, a composition titled Blues in Bangkok penned on original Orkes Radio Malaysia paper. Complementing this, a commemorative poster of Alfonso was also donated by the Merican family in celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of Tan Sri Ahmad Merican. The memorabilia pieces were handed over during a Coffee Talk session where members of the family shared personal insights into their family’s history and Alfonso’s contributions to jazz. “Their contribution reflects not only a deep personal legacy but also Malaysia’s broader musical heritage,” said the hotel’s general manager and area vice president of hotel operations (Asia) Murray Aitken.
