‘Restore harmony after temple relocation dispute’

Sultan: Nip deviant teachings in the bud SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has ordered relevant agencies to conduct regular monitoring to ensure that previously eliminated deviant teachings do not resurface. The Sultan urged that deviant teachings be curbed at an early stage to prevent them from spreading and corrupting Muslims. “I wish to remind Muslims, especially in Selangor, to continuously strengthen their faith and beliefs to avoid being misled by teachings or ideologies that deviate from the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed.” Sultan Sharafuddin was speaking at an iftar event with the people, Hari Raya contribution presentation ceremony and the opening of Masjid Raja Bendahara Tengku Badar Shah in Denai Alam on Wednesday. The newly constructed RM24.1 million mosque can accommodate up to 4,500 congregants at a time. The Ruler said it is the responsibility of every Muslim to refer to mufti and fatwas when they encounter any misleading teachings or contradictory doctrines, and promptly report them to the Selangor Islamic Religious Council. He also advised Muslims to always uphold honesty and integrity, especially in managing assets related to asnaf groups or zakat funds, as well as in handling haj and umrah packages, Bernama reported. Sultan Sharafuddin expressed the utmost regret over fraud committed by unlicensed haj and umrah travel agencies. “This deplorable act can also tarnish the sanctity of Islam in the eyes of non Muslims. I urge and appeal to you (Muslims) to always remember the severe punishment of Allah that awaits. “We may escape punishment in this world but we can never evade the severe judgment of Allah on the day of reckoning.” Earlier, Sultan Sharafuddin, accompanied by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, was greeted upon arrival at the mosque by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, state executive council members and mosque leaders. The Sultan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to officiate at seven new mosques in the state during Ramadan, in addition to distributing RM35.2 million in aid from the Selangor Zakat Board to 75,207 recipients from various districts. Border posts open till 12pm for Raya BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Operating hours at land border posts between Brunei and Malaysia will be extended from 10pm to midnight on Tuesday until April 6 in view of the upcoming festive Hari Raya celebration. The Brunei Immigration and National Registration said the extension is at the Ujung Jalan Control and Inspection Complex, Labu Temporary Control Post, Kuala Lurah Temporary Immigration Control Post, and Sungai Tujoh Immigration Control Post. Normal operating hours for these control posts are from 6am to 10pm. Border crossings often record an increase, especially during festive seasons as families in Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak visit one another. PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on relevant stakeholders to restore harmony with all communities following the dispute over a site earmarked for a mosque where a temple was located. Anwar said the new mosque committee, textile company Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd and religious scholars should play their roles in strengthening ties with the people, whether they are directly or indirectly affected by the dispute. “A peaceful nation is a prosperous one. Stability attracts investors and drives business growth. Seeking ethical, respectful resolutions is not a sign of weakness as some critics claim. “It reflects Madani values – compassion, justice and kindness – not only for Muslims but also for all communities. “If we only seek to be heroes for our own race, the nation will fracture. True leadership means speaking for all, not inciting division and disregarding truth and justice,” he said at the Masjid Madani groundbreaking ceremony near Jalan Masjid India yesterday. The mosque is being built on waqf land owned by Jakel Trading, previously home to the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple. “This is waqf land – a mosque must be built here,” said Anwar. The government’s decision to construct the new mosque in the city centre was made after careful consideration, ensuring concerns were addressed through meaningful dialogue. In Islamic law, waqf land is permanently dedicated as a charitable endowment, with its benefits reserved for religious or charitable purposes. Crucially, the land itself is inalienable – it strengthen ties with people directly or indirectly affected by issue, says PM █ BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI newsdesk@thesundaily.com o New mosque committee, Jakel Trading, religious scholars should help

including 592 in the main prayer hall. Jakel Trading said it had acquired the land in 2012 and secured construction approval in 2021. The company’s legal head Aiman Dazuki said construction had been delayed out of respect for the temple’s relocation process, adding that it had also offered to cover the associated costs. On Tuesday, reports confirmed that the temple management had agreed to relocate, resolving the dispute. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said discussions with stakeholders had helped identify a new 4,000sq ft site for the temple, just 50 metres from its original location.

cannot be sold, gifted or inherited. “My stance in ministerial meetings has been unwavering. Solutions must come through negotiation, no matter the challenges. “From the start, I have been firm. I support dialogue and compromise, but our decision stands. This mosque will be built.” The decision to build the mosque was made to accommodate the growing number of Muslim congregants in the area. The four-storey Masjid Madani, spanning 12,142sq ft, will house a library, an event hall and an arts and cultural space to introduce Islam to the wider public. Located on Jakel-owned land at Lot 328, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, the mosque is set for completion within two years and will accommodate around 2,900 worshippers,

Bolster nation’s cyber defence system, say experts KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s cyber defence system must be strengthened to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology, particularly amid growing threats from radical extremist groups that use cyber attacks for generating income. Universiti Teknologi Mara Media and Information Warfare Studies Centre security and political analyst Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said while Malaysia’s cyber defence system remains relevant, it must be reinforced, particularly in terms of speed and precision. “Among the key strategies which can be used to enhance cyber security are strengthening capabilities in line with hackers’ evolving modus operandi, and refining cyber emergency training, such as the National Drill, to ensure a high level of readiness.” Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said that the government did not bow to the threat. He emphasised the need to bolster the country’s cyber security by allocating additional funds to several agencies, including the police and Bank Negara Malaysia. Noor Nirwandy highlighted the importance of international collaboration in developing a stronger and more resilient cyber security framework. He said the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) has been effective in monitoring cyber threats to the country. Noor Nirwandy emphasised the need for greater collaboration between the government, private sector and the public to foster a cyber security-conscious culture and strengthen preparedness against evolving threats. Udzir said the cyber attack on MAHB’s digital system also posed a risk to national stability. “Cyber attacks of this nature can damage reputations, erode stakeholder trust, lead to operational losses and incur significant compensation costs. It is time for us to invest in national cybersecurity, particularly for critical infrastructure.” Nur Izura, who is also UPM Centre for Strategy and Corporate Relations deputy director (Strategic Management), and a member of Cyber Security Academia Malaysia, suggested exploring the use of artificial intelligence technology to further strengthen the nation’s cyber security framework. She also emphasised the importance of reducing Malaysia’s dependence on foreign cyber security systems by advancing its own technological capabilities.

Noor Nirwandy was referring to reports that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB) digital system had recently been targeted by hackers demanding a ransom of US$10 million (RM44 million).

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) fully supports the proposed Urban Redevelopment Act (URA) currently being finalised by the Housing and Local Government Ministry under the leadership of its minister Nga Kor Ming. PAM president Abu Zarim Abu Bakar said it seeks to address persistent challenges surrounding ageing buildings with multiple owners under the Strata Titles Act. He said the proposed Act introduces a pragmatic solution by setting the en-bloc consent threshold at 75% for existing stratified buildings and a simple majority for abandoned projects, which will facilitate a more feasible path towards revitalisation. “This is in line with practices in many developed countries and will have significant economic impact. “PAM strongly advocates that any new development arising from acquisition under the Urban Redevelopment Act adhere strictly to best practices, thereby ensuring a net positive impact on the urban landscape and fabric of our cities. “The developments, particularly in high-density zones, must be complemented by government initiatives aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure. “This includes strengthening access to public transport, expanding green open spaces, and improving other public amenities and facilities to accommodate the anticipated population growth,” he said. The current consent requirement of 100% of owners has been a stumbling block towards redevelopment of

dilapidated stratified buildings. Abu Zarim also said property developers seeking to spearhead such redevelopments are urged to prioritise long-term sustainability over short-term gains. “Within our institute, we have numerous skilled architects renowned for designing world-class multi-residential developments that offer comfort and sustainability. “Typically, buildings have a lifespan of 50 years with components needing replacements after 15 years. In cases where a rigorous maintenance regimen is upheld, buildings can often surpass a lifespan of 50 years. Unfortunately, this is frequently not the scenario in Malaysia, where numerous Badge on Student Uniforms in the Education Ministry Institutions – had been issued alongside a circular letter No. 3/2025, providing clear instructions on how the badge should be worn. By incorporating the Jalur Gemilang badge into students’ daily uniforms, the statement said the ministry reinforced its commitment to foster national pride among Malaysia’s youth. “It aligns seamlessly with the broader mission of educational institutions to inspire love for the country and cultivate an enduring sense of patriotism.” In August last year, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa highlighted the importance of cultivating patriotism from the school level. He underscored the role of nationhood based programmes in shaping the identity of the younger generation and fostering a sense of pride in national symbols such as the Jalur Gemilang.

renewal are pivotal for ensuring the enduring viability and liveability of our cities. “Preservation efforts for buildings with heritage or historical significance are also paramount, requiring appropriate retrofitting in line with their inherent character. Even relatively new sites may hold historical value,” Abu Zarim said. He added that in cases involving existing owners and multiple community stakeholders, developers are urged to embrace a co-design approach, involving a facilitator, potentially an architect, to engage diverse perspectives that would ensure a design outcome embraced by all the stakeholders involved.

stratified buildings have been neglected for an extended period, rendering the cost of rehabilitation prohibitive for the joint owners.” He said older buildings often fail to meet current building codes, environmental standards, and energy efficiency requirements introduced in the past few decades. He added that retrofitting them for compliance necessitates substantial investment to ensure safety, suitability, and sustainability. “The Urban Redevelopment Act offers the option of enabling en-bloc sale for rehabilitation or complete redevelopment by new or existing owners. “Urban regeneration and

“It is expected that ASF infections will continue, as there is currently no available vaccine for the disease,” she said. To curb the outbreak, the department has issued disinfection orders under Section 23 of the Animals Act 1953 to all affected farms. “Farmers are also prohibited from introducing new pigs until the infection is completely eradicated and Selangor is declared ASF-free,” she added. On Feb 25, it was reported that 1,868 of the 76,000 pigs in Kuala Langat and Sepang had been culled as part of containment efforts. – Bernama About 2.8m vehicles expected on major expressways KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) expects traffic volume on major expressways to surge to 2.77 million vehicles daily during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday. In a statement, MHA said about 2.1 million vehicles will use expressways under the PLUS Group, followed by 216,000 on the KL–Karak Expressway, 176,000 on the West Coast Expressway, 156,000 on the East Coast Expressway 1 and 70,000 on LPT2 during peak festive days. Traffic heading out of the capital towards the east coast, and the northern and southern regions is expected to increase from today, with the additional school holidays from April 2 to 4 declared by the Education Ministry. Return traffic to the capital is expected to peak on April 5 and 6. To ease congestion, MHA has introduced several measures, including a ban on highway lane closures by concessionaires – except for emergencies – from March 24 to April 7. Smart lanes have also been activated at 28 locations along the PLUS Expressway. Motorists passing through these areas may use the emergency lanes as alternative routes during heavy traffic and are advised to follow all posted signs. – Bernama and Bukit Bintang would allow gradual adaptation. “Exemptions or discounts could be offered to residents, low-income individuals and commercial vehicles during off-peak hours,” he said. The congestion pricing proposal was first raised by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa on Feb 27. She said it could cut traffic by up to 20% while bringing long-term economic benefits such as improved business access and increased pedestrian activity. However, Transport Minister Anthony Loke clarified in the Dewan Negara on Tuesday that the government has no immediate plans to implement congestion charges in Kuala Lumpur. Yesterday, Loke reiterated that the charge remains a last resort. “Forget about that (congestion charge), it’s the last option in our minds. We do not want to add to the burden of the people,” he said at the Rapid KL On-Demand event at the Rapid Bus depot in Maluri here. He stressed that the government’s priority is to improve public transport services, not to impose new charges.

Safety Research Centre head Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hua said although congestion charges have worked in other cities, Kuala Lumpur’s urban layout and public transport limitations require careful planning. “Currently, only 20% of the city’s commuters rely on rail transport, which may not be sufficient to support a major shift from private vehicles if a congestion charge is introduced. “Expanding services like MRT3 and introducing integrated ticketing are necessary to provide a reliable alternative,” he said. Law said congestion pricing could reduce traffic by 15% to 20%, based on international examples, with fewer vehicles on the road leading to fewer collisions and better road safety. “There would also be significant environmental benefits,” he added, citing Stockholm’s 10% to 14% drop in emissions and London’s 13% reduction in nitrogen dioxide levels after implementing congestion charges. He stressed the importance of addressing social equity concerns, suggesting exemptions or subsidies for lower-income groups to prevent financial hardship. To ensure a smooth transition, Law proposed a phased implementation. “Starting with high-traffic areas like KLCC

Hizal said public transport readiness is the most crucial factor in determining the success of congestion pricing. He noted that cities like Stockholm and Singapore had robust public transport networks before introducing such measures. “For Malaysia, the MRT, LRT and bus services have made good progress, but further enhancement and expansion are needed to meet growing demand,” he said. If implemented, Hizal said a hybrid model using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) would be the most viable option for the capital. This would allow integration with existing toll infrastructure to ensure efficient system operations. “Lessons from global cities suggest that for congestion pricing to work in KL, several key measures must be in place before implementation, beyond just improving public transport. “This includes dynamic pricing that charges more during peak hours, transparent reinvestment of revenue into public transport and road safety, a phased rollout to test effectiveness, and seamless enforcement using ANPR and RFID.” Meanwhile, Universiti Putra Malaysia Road

KUALA LUMPUR: While a congestion charge could ease traffic in Kuala Lumpur, experts warn that several critical issues must first be addressed. Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) head of corporate communications and knowledge management Dr Hizal Hanis Hashim said the main goal is to encourage public transport use to ease congestion, improve infrastructure efficiency, boost road safety, and lower carbon emissions. Miros, in collaboration with the Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation, is currently studying the feasibility of implementing the charge in the capital. Rapid KL On-Demand to triple fleet KUALA LUMPUR: Rapid KL On-Demand is set for a major expansion, with its fleet increasing from 110 to 320 vans by June. This is expected to boost daily ridership from over 4,000 to 36,000 passengers. In line with this growth, Rapid KL On-Demand introduced an open payment system yesterday at the Rapid KL depot in Cheras. Commuters can now pay for rides using debit or credit cards, in addition to Touch ’n Go cards. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative aims to modernise public transport payments and enhance convenience for commuters. “With this new system, users no longer have to worry about insufficient Touch ’n Go card balances. “It simplifies the payment process and improves the overall customer experience,” he said during a press conference. The open payment system will be gradually introduced across all existing Rapid KL On Demand vans, with full implementation expected by May. Previously, passengers could only use Touch ’n Go, the MyRapid Concession Card, OKU Smile Travel Pass, and Unlimited Travel Passes (My50, MyCity and Family Pass). Launched in May 2023 as Demand Responsive Transit and rebranded as Rapid KL On-Demand in February, the service was introduced to replace underutilised bus routes,

The department has also opened seven investigation papers under Sections 34 and 36 of the Animals Act 1953 following Op ASF, an enforcement operation carried out in outbreak zones. Hassuzana warned that pig farms in Selangor remain at high risk (Category 3) due to inadequate biosecurity measures and their close proximity – only 0.5 to 1km apart – which increases the likelihood of ASF transmission.

She was replying to a statement by state infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim on Wednesday, who said the department had culled about 76,000 pigs from 57 farms in Kuala Langat and Sepang last week due to ASF infections. Hassuzana added that pigs from 52 ASF negative farms are still permitted for slaughter at licensed abattoirs, subject to strict regulations by department.

Its director Dr Hassuzana Khalil said the culling was conducted using carbon dioxide gas, with carcasses buried on pig farms in accordance with established guidelines. To date, 58 farms in Sepang and Kuala Langat have been affected by ASF and issued disposal orders under Section 19 of the Animals Act 1953 (Act 647) to prevent further spread of the disease. “The culling process at infected farms is

RM19m losses from online purchase fraud KUALA LUMPUR: Online purchase fraud cases from Jan 1 to March 24 have risen by 36.9% compared with the same period last year, with 2,328 cases recorded and losses exceeding RM19 million. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa said during the same period last year, 1,700 cases were reported, resulting in losses of RM13.66 million. “As the festive season approaches, online shopping will be a popular choice for many consumers. Police urge the public to remain vigilant when making purchases.” The public is advised to be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and conduct transactions only through secure and reputable e-commerce platforms. Rohaimi said his team has identified an online fraud syndicate that used the e-commerce platform poster “Ramadan Bersama Shopee” to deceive buyers. He explained that the syndicate manipulated the poster by inserting an individual’s phone number as a contest winner. “The individual was then contacted by the syndicate and instructed to activate ‘shopeepaylater’ to claim the so-called prize before being asked to scan a QR code. “After scanning the QR code, the individual discovered that money had been deducted from their bank account. Ringing in Aidilfitri with new song by DJ Dave

KUALA LUMPUR: After nearly five decades, veteran singer Datuk DJ Dave is once again brightening Aidilfitri with a new song, Meriah Syawal . The song not only adds to the joy of Syawal but also brings back memories of his iconic Raya song Menjelang Hari Raya , which remains close to the hearts of fans to this day. Produced in just six days, Meriah Syawal is accompanied by a music video showcasing the beauty of tradition, the charm of village life and the joy of celebrating with family. Explaining how the idea for the song came about, the 77-year-old singer, whose real name is Irwan Shah Abdullah, said the melody o Tune accompanied by music video showcasing beauty of tradition, charm of village life and joy of celebrating with family

spontaneously came to him after sahur earlier this month. “I wondered if I would have enough time to record it. With the support and encouragement of my wife, I managed to complete the song, from writing the lyrics and composing the melody to recording and producing the music video. “My only wish is to give a gift to my fans for the festive season. The key is to ensure your face looks radiant.” Nur Amira, a certified consultant from the ByFERIAL Image and Colour Institute in the United States, explained that a colour analysis can be done by placing a white cloth around the face to eliminate any colour distraction, followed by fabric swatches in various tones being placed near the face one by one to observe their effect on a person’s complexion. Universiti Teknologi Mara College of Creative Arts senior lecturer Faizal Hamid agreed that choosing colours that do not complement one’s

Vietnam police raid factory, seize 1.4 tonnes of ketamine HANOI: Police in Vietnam busted the country’s biggest synthetic drug factory, seizing 1.4 tonnes of ketamine in the coastal tourist city of Nha Trang. A six-month operation to uncover the drug ring culminated last Saturday when 200 officers raided three linked facilities in the southern city and arrested 11 people, including a Taiwanese national who was the alleged mastermind. “This is the largest synthetic drug manufacturing facility ever dismantled in Vietnam,” said Nguyen Van Vien, director of the department of drug-related crime investigation, according to a statement on the government’s official news portal. It featured “an exceptionally large-scale, modern production line, with advanced technology”, he said. Among those arrested were four Vietnamese nationals, four Chinese citizens and three Taiwanese, including the 51-year old alleged ringleader Chang Chun Ming, who police had monitored since his entry into Vietnam last August with a large shipment of glass tubes, the news portal said. Chang rented a 1,300 sq m plot of land in November in a remote area of Nha Trang, a city popular with Chinese tourists, and allegedly recruited two fellow Taiwanese with expertise in drug manufacturing. Activities were mainly conducted at night and the semi-finished product was later moved to another facility for purification. The drugs had extremely high purity but none had yet been distributed or sold, the government statement cited police as saying. A Vietnamese court sentenced 27 people to death in December after finding them guilty of trafficking more than 600kg of narcotics including heroin, ketamine and methamphetamine. Vietnam has strict laws and courts routinely hand out death sentences for drug convictions. Anyone caught with more than 600gm of heroin or more than 2.5kg of methamphetamine faces the death penalty. – AFP Taiwan jails four soldiers for spying TAIPEI: Four Taiwanese soldiers, including three from a unit in charge of security for the president’s office, have been sentenced to prison for photographing and leaking confidential information to China. The number of people prosecuted for spying for Beijing has risen sharply in recent years, with retired and serving members of Taiwan’s military the main targets of Chinese infiltration efforts, official figures show. It comes after President Lai Ching-te announced this month plans to reinstate military judges to hear espionage cases and other offences involving service members. Three members of a military unit in charge of security for the Presidential Office and a soldier in the Defence Ministry’s information and telecommunications command were convicted for violating national security law, the Taipei district court said on Wednesday. The four received jail terms ranging from five years and 10 months to seven years for passing “military information that should be kept confidential to Chinese intelligence agents for several months”, the court said. The crimes took place between 2022 and 2024, the court said, adding that the four had received payments ranging from around NT$260,000 to NT$660,000 (RM34,788 RM88,629), it said. Prosecutors said the soldiers had used their mobile phones to photograph military information. – AFP

o Tight restrictions bar most local gamblers

The government, led by the populist Pheu Thai party, hopes to attract at least 100 billion baht (RM13 billion) in new investment in casinos and entertainment complexes and see an annual boost to foreign arrivals of 5% to 10%, while generating revenue of more than 12 billion baht a year. Despite most betting and gambling being outlawed in Thailand, illicit operations have operated for years. A January opinion poll in Thailand indicated there was opposition to the plan, however, and some political parties have argued that building a gambling industry would worsen social problems. Several countries in Southeast Asia have legalised casinos, but only a few like wealthy Singapore has been successful in drawing global giants such as Las Vegas Sands Corp on the back of robust regulations. blocking large swathes of the population, where per capita gross domestic product is about US$7,300 (RM32,357). A deputy finance minister had earlier this month said the assets requirement for Thai nationals would be dropped because it would exclude too many people. Another restriction is that the casino area may only occupy up to 10% of the entire space of an entertainment complex, according to a government statement. The draft law will be sent to parliament, and if passed, will also need approval from the Senate and the king. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra told reporters the details of the law were not final as parliament would have the final say. A Citi report late last year estimated that about half of people aged 20 and more in Thailand could be casino players, providing a base for the country to potentially become the world’s third-largest gambling destination.

BANGKOK: Thailand’s Cabinet yesterday approved a draft law for casinos and entertainment complexes, as the government looks to attract more tourists and build a major gaming industry. Gambling is mostly banned in Thailand apart from state-controlled horse racing, the lottery and on some sports but successive governments have pressed the case for allowing casinos to draw in more foreign visitors and create more jobs and state revenue. But the latest draft approved by Cabinet will significantly limit how many Thai punters can go to casinos, with an entry fee of 5,000 baht (RM653) and proof of at least 50 million baht (RM6.51 million) in bank deposits, effectively

Myanmar military puts on show of strength NAYPYIDAW: Myanmar mustered its embattled troops for a show of strength on Armed Forces Day yesterday, after a year of seismic defeats and turning to forcibly conscripting civilians to bolster its ranks.

“The reality is they still have a superior supply of arms,” said Myint, and they “don’t have to defeat everyone to maintain control”. War monitors say there has been a spike in airstrikes by the air force’s Russian-made jets. The past year has shown how strong a hand Beijing holds in Myanmar, with a willingness to play off the military and its opponents to pursue economic opportunities and stability on its borders, according to analyst Myint. After public concern spiked in China over scam centres in Myanmar, thousands of workers were repatriated at Beijing’s demand. “Beijing sees all these smaller players in the sandbox like insolent children not getting along,” Myint said. “They whip out the carrot one time, they whip out the stick the next, and hold it together in a manner that best serves their interests.” – AFP

swathes of the western Rakhine state, and sought to conscript more than 50,000 people. The civil war pits the military against anti coup guerillas and long-established groups. More than 3.5 million people are displaced, half the population live in poverty and one million civilians face World Food Programme aid cuts next month following US President Donald Trump’s slashing of Washington’s humanitarian budget. At the same time, trade sanctions have isolated Myanmar, making it increasingly dependent on China and Russia for economic and military support. “The military has never been defeated this severely,”according to Jack Myint, a non-resident fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies think tank. But observers agree its grip on the centre is secure for now.

Thousands of soldiers marched before State Administration Council Chairman Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyidaw, where a banner over the approach to the parade ground reads: “Only when the military is strong will the country be strong”. Special forces guarded the main entrance to the remote, purpose-built capital. The parades have gotten progressively smaller in the four years of civil war since the military deposed Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government. Since the last Armed Forces Day, the military has lost the key northern town of Lashio – including a regional military command – and
