King lauds dedication of police force KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty the King of Malaysia Sultan Ibrahim has expressed appreciation to police personnel for their sacrifices and dedication in safeguarding peace and security. In conjunction with the 218th Police Day, Sultan Ibrahim, who serves as the Honorary Commissioner-in-Chief of the force, highlighted the unwavering commitment of police personnel who are on the front lines at all times. “They put their safety and lives on the line to uphold public order, enforce the law and protect the people from crime. “This duty is far from easy, yet it is carried out with unwavering dedication, courage and determination,” His Majesty said in a post on his Facebook page yesterday. “I pray to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala that all police personnel are granted strength and protection in every duty they undertake. “ Al-Fatihah for those who have passed on. May they be placed among the righteous and the martyrs. “Wishing all police personnel and veterans a memorable 218th Police Day celebration.” – Bernama 6,800 cops to ensure smooth traffic flow during Aidilfitri KUALA LUMPUR: With Hari Raya fast approaching, a force of 6,800 police personnel will be deployed nationwide from Saturday to April 3, ensuring that traffic flows smoothly during the festive period. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said all leave have been frozen, keeping officers on standby 24/7 to facilitate safe and seamless journeys for those travelling. He underscored the vital role of police in maintaining order, and urged the public to plan ahead, drive responsibly and steer clear of reckless behaviour. On border control, Saifuddin made it clear that authorities were doubling down on security, while ensuring smooth travel during peak holiday movements. “Maritime security remains another key priority. In the first week of Ramadan, the ministry launched Ops Pagar Laut, a round-the clock operation spearheaded by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and other agencies under its purview. “Festive seasons have long been a window of opportunity for smugglers and criminals who assume security measures will be lax. But let me be clear, this time they will find no such weakness. Ops Pagar Lautis in full swing at all our maritime borders.” He added that marine police and the General Operations Force are also holding the line along key border hotspots, including the Rantau Panjang-Golok stretch infamous for its 134 illegal jetties. Saifuddin said these sites had been completely shut down, with elite “Senoi Praaq” personnel from Perak deployed to bolster security. The Golok River, bordering Thailand, is a known hub for illicit activity ranging from drug smuggling and firearms trafficking to illegal immigration and the contraband trade of everything from cooking oil to livestock. “We have closed all illegal jetties following a decisive Border Security Committee meeting, which I chaired alongside multiple agencies, including the Kelantan government. “Marine police remain on high alert, monitoring coastal areas and nautical border limits under their jurisdiction.” – By QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI and HARITH KAMAL

We will not allow criminals, traitors to dictate actions: PM o Anwar commends police force for recent successes, emphasises importance of strengthening security measures

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s security would be at risk if its leadership and institutions give in to the demands of criminals and traitors, both at home and abroad, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. “If we allow threats to dictate our actions, we are essentially surrendering to criminals and betraying our duty to the nation,” he said at the 218th Police Day celebration at the Police Training Centre yesterday. He emphasised the importance of strengthening security measures, calling for advanced capabilities and additional funding to bolster preparedness. Anwar commended the police force for its progress under strong leadership, attributing its success to teamwork and decisive action. Highlighting recent successes in narcotics enforcement, he said drug-related crimes not only inflict financial losses and endanger the youth but also damage the Ű BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI AND HARITH KAMAL newsdesk@thesundaily.com

can’t cave in to hackers’ demands.” He said corruption, smuggling, betrayal and racial or religious hostility cannot be tolerated as they undermine the country’s stability. “This is my call to the force – to stand as the pillar of national security while strengthening ties with the community.” Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain described 2024 as a challenging year for police, citing several high-profile cases that shook the nation. He said these included the arrest of an armed Israeli national in Kuala Lumpur, deadly attacks on police stations in Johor and Penang, and the rescue of women and children from alleged exploitation. Razarudin also highlighted the key achievements of police, particularly those involving the Criminal Investigation Department, which handled over 126,000 cases, achieving a resolution rate of more than 84%, while intelligence operations recorded a 95% success rate. “The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department dismantled 245 drug syndicates, arrested 753 suspects and seized assets worth over RM388 million. “In tackling cybercrime, the Commercial Crime Investigation Department resolved online fraud cases involving losses amounting to RM1.57 billion.” He added that the Internal Security and Public Order Department solved nearly 9,500 cases, leading to over 7,000 arrests and the seizure of goods worth RM984 million. Razarudin said the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department recorded a 5.5% increase in summonses issued totalling 4.9 million, with fines exceeding RM299 million. While acknowledging public criticism, he stressed that trust in the police force remains strong. “With over 134,000 personnel, my team and I encourage the public to help enhance our service quality and integrity through the Public Report Management System, which allows the public to report complaints involving police personnel.” “It doesn’t matter whether a mosque has stood for 50 or 100 years. If it does not meet legal requirements, it will be removed. “Some say it (temple) has been there since 2012 or even 2008. That’s fine, rather than demolish it, it should be relocated properly, following the necessary legal procedures.” He also said the mosque’s construction was approved in 2019 under a previous administration. “The approval was granted in 2019. When was it given the green light for development? 2020. When was construction approved? 2021. “Each of these decisions happened under different prime ministers. But now, the blame is placed on the current prime minister.” Last week, City Hall confirmed that a new location had been identified for the temple, ensuring that all actions align with the commitment of the Federal Constitution to religious freedom. – By QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI and HARITH KAMAL

reputation of the country. He praised enforcement teams for their swift and firm actions, urging them to maintain their momentum. “In our fight against corruption and governance issues, police and other enforcement agencies must adopt a zero tolerance approach for the next one to two years. The toughest action must be taken, regardless of rank or position.” Anwar expressed confidence that such determination would significantly improve Malaysia’s political and economic climate, emphasising that this requires strong political will from leaders, including the Cabinet and police. He cited an incident involving a cyber attack on Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd two days ago, with hackers demanding a US$10 million (RM44 million) ransom. “I was told of it, and instantly refused. KUALA LUMPUR: The management of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Jalan Masjid India has agreed to relocate the temple to a new site near its current location. Temple committee secretary G. Kaarthik said the agreement was reached following a discussion with the authorities on Monday regarding the new temple site. “We are grateful to the minister, the elected representatives and other authorities who helped facilitate this resolution. “The new site is located nearby, within the Jalan Masjid India area, and is suitable as an alternative location,” he said in a statement yesterday. Kaarthik said the committee is currently finalising some technical aspects with Kuala Lumpur City Hall and an official announcement would be made. Last Thursday, the media reported that discussions on the relocation of the temple on land owned by Jakel Group had been progressing smoothly between the company,

temple management and City Hall. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also confirmed that the groundbreaking ceremony for Masjid Madani at Jalan Masjid India would take place as scheduled. Speaking at the 218th Police Day celebration at Pulapol, he said the new mosque is necessary due to overcrowding at existing prayer facilities in the area. “The current mosques and prayer spaces are packed, so an additional place of worship is needed. “That’s why I will proceed with laying the foundation stone (tomorrow).” He said Malaysia upholds the rule of law and that all places of worship, regardless of faith, must comply with legal requirements. “In Lahad Datu, a mosque was torn down for not adhering to regulations. In Perak, a surau was demolished after the land was taken over by a developer and a mosque in Sentul also faced the same fate.

48 abandoned buildings identified in federal capital KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 48 abandoned buildings have been identified in the federal capital as of Feb 20, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. Several premises in Lorong Tiong Nam are listed and mostly rows of dilapidated shops,” she said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Negara yesterday. Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Setapak, Cheras and Kampung Pandan also have abandoned buildings. “This is likely due to the issue of layered ownership, stalled heritage planning or failed property investment which have caused the premises to be left vacant for a long time.”

unsightly buildings, while Section 75 allows action to be taken if the owner failed to comply. She added that provisions under Section 83(1) of the Roads, Drainage and Buildings Act 1974 (Act 133) allow local authorities to order the repair, renovation or demolition of any building deemed to be a danger to public safety or to damage the aesthetic value of the environment. Zaliha said City Hall was also examining redevelopment strategies with appropriate partners so that buildings could be restored and reintroduced into the market cycle. She also agreed to set up a special team to look into the acquisition of abandoned buildings to renovate, resell or rent them. No plans to impose congestion charge: Transport minister KUALA LUMPUR: The government does not plan to implement a congestion charge on private vehicles in Kuala Lumpur for now, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Congestion meeting had discussed the matter in depth previously, and noted the ministry’s views to focus on improving the quality of public transport first. “Therefore, the Transport Ministry does not and has not yet planned to implement a congestion charge on private vehicles at this time,” he said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Negara yesterday. He was responding to Senator Tan Sri Datuk Low Kian Chuan who wanted to know whether the ministry would consider implementing a congestion charge tax given that the “first mile and last mile” connection issue had been resolved through on-demand transit van services. Loke said a study on the implementation mechanism, projected reduction in traffic volume and increased use of public transport was being conducted by the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation. He added the ministry is also implementing the Klang Valley Public Transport Strategic Plan which includes an “Origin-Destination” study. He said it is hoped the study would be used as a benchmark to improve the quality of public transport in Klang Valley and other states. – Bernama Longer stay permits for business visitors, foreign investors PETALING JAYA: The Immigration Department will introduce the Long-Term Social Visit Pass for business visitors and foreign investors, effective April 1. Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said this would allow them to remain in Malaysia for six months, with the possibility of an extension for another six months, subject to justification and necessity. “It simplifies the process for foreign investors who wish to stay in Malaysia for an appropriate duration, particularly those who have committed to making investments through investment agencies or relevant authorities.” He said pass holders would also be eligible for the Multiple-Entry Visa, allowing them greater flexibility in their business activities. “The facility is expected to stimulate the investment ecosystem while maintaining security screening for prospective investors.” Further details can be accessed at the department’s official website for expatriates at https://esd.imi.gov.my/.

She was responding to Senator Tan Sri Mohamad Fatmi Che Salleh who enquired on the number of abandoned buildings in the federal capital and the government’s plans for them. Zaliha said several strategic areas such as Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Pudu and Jalan Gombak also had abandoned premises and buildings, which meant that the issue was not only occurring in suburban areas but also in prime commercial locations. “It is also surprising that several neighbourhoods which are considered mature and stable with consistent land demand, such as Kampung Baru,

She said based on the latest records from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, 25 were residential buildings while 23 were commercial buildings. “The abandoned buildings are in several areas, including in Jinjang Utara, with at least seven premises, majority of which are residential buildings. This may be due to local issues stemming from old housing. “At Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah or Jalan Ipoh, there are several abandoned residential and commercial units, reflecting urban decay or stunted development.

She said City Hall had taken several proactive steps, including issuing notification letters and notices under Sections 74 and 75 of Act 171 (Local Government Act) to all owners of the affected premises. However, to date, only nine building owners have taken action after receiving the notices, Bernama reported. Zaliha said Section 74 empowers local authorities to direct owners to repair or clean up dirty and

funds from past hikes were used effectively.” High-stakes negotiations involving water operators, the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and state governments are expected to begin soon as they work to finalise new tariffs before the July 1 deadline. In a major shift, the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry was reported to have approved a specialised water tariff for data centres, setting the rate at RM5.50 per cubic metre. This marks a pivotal change, separating data centre operators from traditional industrial users – a move that could reshape the cost structures in the industry.

o Govt must ensure grouses are heard and address complaints on quality and supply reliability: Fomca

PETALING JAYA: A proposed water tariff review has divided public opinion – while some see it as crucial for better infrastructure, others fear it will worsen the financial burden of struggling households. Engineer Razman Ismail, 48, acknowledged the need for sustainable water management but insists that any increase must be reasonable and justified. “While I’m living quite comfortably, the increase should still be reasonable, perhaps around 5% to 10%. But, authorities must be transparent about how the funds will be used.” This view aligns with concerns expressed by the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca), which opposes tariff hikes without clear justification and transparency. Fomca CEO Dr Saravanan Thambirajah urged the government to ensure consumer voices are heard, adding that it opposed decision-making that treats public consultation as a mere ‘tick-the-box’ exercise. “The government must address concerns about affordability, service quality and accountability. We also call for audit reports to be made public to ensure water operators manage funds responsibly.” On March 10, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the government was reviewing water tariffs, with adjustments expected in some states. Noraini Abdullah, a 38-year-old laksa stall owner, said now is not the time for a water tariff review. “Many are struggling with higher expenses for food, electricity and transport. Maybe when the cost of living is more stable, a review would be more acceptable,” she said. Fomca echoed Noraini’s concerns, calling on the government to ensure any tariff increase comes with measurable improvements in service quality and supply reliability. Saravanan also emphasised the importance of prioritising affordability and accessibility, recommending targeted subsidies or rebates to protect low-income households. “An increase in water tariffs will significantly impact lower-income families, many of whom are already struggling with rising costs in essential sectors like electricity, fuel and food.” In 2024, Malaysia implemented its first nationwide water tariff hike in decades. an increase of 22 sen per cubic metre, raising water bills by an average of RM3 per month. Despite the increase, Saravanan said improvements in water supply and service reliability were still lacking. “Complaints about frequent disruptions, low water pressure, and slow response times remain widespread, raising doubts about whether

OSH Amendment Act key to safer workplaces PUTRAJAYA: The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) (Amendment) Act 2022 must be fully adhered to as it plays a crucial role in protecting workers and ensuring a safer work environment, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong. He added that his ministry is committed to enforcing compliance among employers to ensure social security protection for all workers. “We must ensure that OSH laws are followed and that our workers receive the social security protection they deserve. After a hard day’s work, they should be able to return home safely,” he said during the ministry’s monthly assembly yesterday. Sim added that his vision for the ministry is to ensure that every worker in the country returns home safely at the end of the day. The ministry’s Kedah director Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin said the operation will focus on locations such as supermarkets, farmers’ markets, public markets, Ramadan bazaars and shopping centres. He warned that there would be no compromise for traders who breach the rules by selling goods above the controlled price, failing to display pink price tags, or not displaying price tags or price lists for controlled items. “Our personnel will be in plain clothes to be more effective. If we wear uniforms, people recognise us. So we have to blend in. SEREMBAN: Coconut milk traders have been warned not to exploit the increase in demand for freshly extracted coconut milk ahead of Aidilfitri by adulterating the product purely to increase profits. Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Dr Fuziah Salleh said demand for fresh coconut milk would inevitably rise during the festive season, especially as it is now a controlled item. “Currently, we do not have a mechanism to measure how much water is mixed with coconut milk, unlike imported and local rice mixtures, which can be quantified. “So it is indeed difficult to determine. However, if such incidents do occur, consumers can report them to the ministry and we will investigate,” she said. She was speaking during a ground visit to a supermarket here on Monday to monitor the implementation of the Festive Season Maximum Price Control Scheme for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, accompanied by Negeri Sembilan ministry director Muhammad Zahir Mazlan. legal types. Syndicates use intermediaries, including foreign nationals and frequent travellers, as mules to smuggle small quantities frequently to minimise detection, collecting them at designated locations. Razarudin added that syndicates are leveraging social media, e-commerce platforms and instant messaging apps to sell fireworks via online transactions with postal or in-person deliveries. He said these tactics indicate a well-organised smuggling network, emphasising that strict border surveillance, cyber intelligence and community cooperation is required to address the illegal trade. He also said two fireworks related injury cases have been reported, involving children aged seven and 13 in Kedah and Kelantan. He urged the public to opt for safer alternatives, such as light shows, traditional games or family gatherings, stressing that playing with fireworks poses serious risks and is illegal under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, Bernama reported. “Parents play a crucial role in supervising their children and educating them about the dangers of fireworks,” he said, adding that continuous awareness campaigns should be conducted in schools, mosques and on social media.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police seized various fireworks worth over RM106 million during the first quarter of the year, involving 60 cases and 68 arrests. IGP Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said as of March 23, the largest seizure worth RM48,522,220 was recorded at duty-free zones and areas under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023, involving five cases. “This was followed by the General Operations Force with RM31,748,936 from 32 cases, the Marine Police Force with RM24,665,846 from 20 cases and the Federal Reserve Unit with RM1,146,879 from three cases.” He said among the smuggled fireworks were Happy Boom Cake, Happy Boom Cracker, Happy Boom Assorted Celebration Red Fire Cracker, Happy Boom Assorted Celebration Red Fire Cracker Repeater and Happy Boom Shoot Cake. He noted that demand for these fireworks is particularly high during festive seasons due to difficulty obtaining them in the

local market. Razarudin said syndicates employ numerous tactics to evade detection by authorities, such as using illegal border crossings between Thailand and Malaysia, particularly in Padang Besar and Bukit Kayu Hitam, and concealing the fireworks among other goods in cargo trucks and express buses. He added that some syndicates smuggled the contraband using small boats or cargo ships, concealing them inside shipping containers alongside imported goods. “Information suggests that fireworks are brought in by sea using container ships and arrive at official ports in Sarawak. These containers come with legitimate Customs documents listing approved fireworks for sale but they also contain prohibited ones.” He explained that fireworks are also smuggled through ports and transported by truck to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in large quantities to meet demand. He said some licensed sellers, who obtain permits from district police chiefs for storage and sale, sell banned fireworks alongside the

Wood-processing machinery was also seized during the operation.” GOF also seized similar items during an inspection at a sawmill in Kampung Lela Jasa, Kuala Krai at 10pm on Sunday. Nik Ros Azhan said the sawmill was operating without a licence from the Forestry Department.

Additionally, GOF foiled an attempt to smuggle liquor at an illegal Nibong jetty in Kuala Jambu, Tumpat at 2.30pm on Monday after patrol officers discovered several liquor boxes on the riverbank. The boxes contained 119 bottles of Hong Thong and Chang liquor, valued at RM2,380 and believed to have been smuggled from Thailand. “The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967,” he said. Syahir Shafein, Wanns Ahmad, and Shah Reza himself. According to Shah Reza, the project is part of his efforts to elevate Kelantan’s identity in the entertainment industry while showcasing the unique culture of Cik Siti Wan Kembang through a festive song. “The dikir barat concept was chosen because this genre often revitalises older songs with new lyrics. The original lyrics have been adapted into the Kelantanese dialect, accompanied by traditional musical elements such as drums and Ma l ays i a ’ s A sea n c h a irm a n s hip . handclaps,” he said. For the music video, Shah Reza opted for a modern and vibrant concept, deviating from the traditional village setting typically seen in Raya-themed productions, to appeal to younger audiences and children. “I wanted to capture the attention of the younger generation. If we stick to the usual village concept, it might not stand out as much. So, I decided to give it a fresh and dynamic touch.” The producer of the historical drama Tuan Petri Saadong added that the project was produced on a

modest budget, as all participating artistes joined voluntarily out of their shared passion for preserving Kelantanese arts and culture, Bernama reported. He said the lyrics are simple and easy to remember, focusing on Kelantanese people living abroad, with a central message encouraging them to return home for Aidilfitri. The song, recorded at a studio in Jalan Ampang will be released on Shah Reza’s YouTube channel, as well as shared across the social media accounts of the participating artistes.

KUALA LUMPUR: To enliven Aidilfitri celebrations, actor and producer Datuk Seri Shah Reza is producing a Hari Raya song in the dikir barat style. Titled “Kelek Ghayo”, the song is a cover version of a classic 1970s Indonesian track originally

composed by Sam Bimbo and performed by Julie Remie. It has been given a new touch, with lyrics in the Kelantanese dialect. The song features 10 artistes from Kelantan, including Mathni Razak, Danny X Factor, Syed Aiman, Issey Fazlisham, Izzue Islam, Asrulfaizal,

Tycoon appeals in US$17.7b money-laundering case

UK sanctions Sri Lankan ex-commanders

Myanmar clinic bombed, doctor and wife killed YANGON: An airstrike on a remote village clinic killed 11 people including a doctor and his wife. Villagers said the Saturday morning airstrike hit the village of Hnan Khar in the western region of Magway, in a zone held by rebels. Military spokesmen could not be reached for comment. “It flew very low and I heard a loud bomb blast,” said one villager on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. “When I went to clear up the area I saw human body parts. It was terrible and my mind is still tarumatised by the image.” The eyewitness and a second man from the village said a doctor and his wife were among the 11 killed when the explosion tore through a makeshift clinic in a house. “The military is attacking more frequently with airstrikes in recent months and all civilians are very afraid,” said the villager, also speaking on condition of anonymity on Monday. “They listen for the sound of fighter jets.” While Myanmar’s military has suffered territorial losses, analysts say its airforce, maintained with Russian technical support, has been key to keeping its adversaries at bay. The number of airstrikes on civilians has risen, according to non-profit organisation Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), with nearly 800 reported last year. That figure was more than triple the previous year and ACLED predicted the military will continue to rely on airstrikes because it is “under increasing military pressure on the ground”. – AFP LONDON: Britain on Monday imposed sanctions on three former senior Sri Lankan military commanders and one former rebel commander over human rights violations during a civil war that ended in 2009. The measures, which include bans on travelling to Britain and asset freezes, target the former chief of staff of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, Shavendra Silva, former commander of the Navy Wasantha Karannagoda and former commander of the Army Jagath Jayasuriya. Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, known as Karuna Amman, a former commander in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, was also sanctioned. Amman split from the LTTE before the war ended and later led a paramilitary group working for the Sri Lankan Army. The United Nations estimates that 80,000 100,000 people died in the 26-year war between government forces and separatists. Sri Lanka’s army and security forces have been accused of war crimes, including extrajudicial killings, torture and sexual violence, and of abductions and torture long after the end of the war. A UN panel in 2011 found “credible allegations” of serious violations by both sides “some of which would amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity”. Sri Lanka has always denied such allegations, but refused to cooperate with international investigators. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: “The UK government is committed to human rights in Sri Lanka, including seeking accountability for human rights violations and abuses which took place during the civil war, and which continue to have an impact on communities today.” – Reuters

will be defended by eight lawyers, according to state media. The 68-year-old was found guilty of laundering US$17.7 billion and illegal cross border trafficking of US$4.5 billion. She was also found guilty of bond fraud to the tune of US$1.2 billion. The court determined that Lan was “the mastermind, committed the crime with sophisticated methods, many times, causing especially serious consequences”. Thirty-three other defendants were also sentenced at the court in Ho Chi Minh City and given terms ranging from two to 23 years in prison. Twenty-seven defendants are appealing against their sentences, state media said. During her first trial in April, Lan was found guilty of embezzling US$12.5 billion but prosecutors said the total damages caused by the scam totalled US$27 billion – equivalent to around 6% of the country’s 2023 GDP. Lan owned just 5% of shares in SCB on paper but at her trial the court concluded that she effectively controlled more than 90% through family, friends and staff. HO CHI MINH CITY: The appeal of a Vietnamese property tycoon convicted of money laundering began yesterday, three months after she lost a challenge against the death penalty in a separate case. Property developer Truong My Lan was found guilty in April last year of stealing money from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) and sentenced to death for fraud amounting to US$27 billion (RM119.87 billion). Lan appealed against that verdict and the court said there was no basis to reduce her sentence, but ruled that she could still escape the death penalty if she returned three quarters of the stolen assets. Now she is appealing against the verdict from a second trial in October, in which she was sentenced to life in prison for three crimes. Lan, now accustomed to high-profile hearings, chatted yesterday with police officers and looked relaxed as she waited for the court to start in Ho Chi Minh City. Her niece, Truong Hue Van, who was handed a five-year prison term in October for Around 1,000 students and activists dressed in black took part in the protest in front of an East Java government building. Holding posters that said “Reject the Military Law”, and “The Military Should Return to the Barracks”, protesters hurled rocks, sticks and Molotov cocktails towards the police guarding the demonstration. Police eventually used water cannons to disperse the protesters. “We received information that 25 people are being detained, but we are unable to give them legal assistance,” said Fatkhul Khoir, a human rights activist from the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence. He said that some of the protesters taken to the police office looked bruised. The police did not respond to AFP’s request for comments. The Indonesian parliament approved the amendments to the military law on Thursday, despite protests that it would expand the armed forces’ role in civilian affairs. The revision to the armed forces law, pushed mainly by President Prabowo Subianto’s coalition, was aimed at expanding the military’s role beyond defence in a country long influenced by its powerful armed forces. The new law allows active military officers to hold a position in 14 government institutions without resigning, an increase from 10

institutions in the previous law. The amendment has sparked fears of a return to the era of late dictator Suharto, under whom Prabowo, a former general, once served and which saw military figures used to crack down on dissent. Rights groups have said the change would enable officials to fill more civilian posts with
