A S Malaysians gear up for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, a growing number of festive shoppers are redefining fashion – choosing secondhand as a conscious, stylish and budget friendly alternative. Second-hand goods marketplace Carousell reported a surge in demand for pre-loved fashion a month before Raya, with homegrown modest wear brands such as Qiszar, Petit Moi and Whimsigirl among the most sought-after. This shift highlights a broader movement toward sustainable and value-driven fashion choices – even before and during major festivities. Local designers take centre stage Carousell’s search data indicated Malaysian shoppers are increasingly drawn to homegrown designers in the preloved market, underscoring a demand for unique and high-quality pieces. Qiszar, Petit Moi, Leeyanarahman, Whimsigirl and Mimpikita are local brands that experienced seasonal search spikes ahead of and during Raya in the past three years. This year, preliminary data showed increased search demand for Qiszar, Leeyanarahman, Wanzar, Zalia and Hijabistahub. Baju kurung remained one of the most-searched traditional outfits, proving classic festive wear continues to be a wardrobe staple. Other popular keywords are “ abaya ” and “ kebaya ”. Users tend to start searching before Ramadan, with peak search activity during Ramadan itself – the early bird catches the best deals as listing prices tend to be higher during the festive period. Savvy shoppers can find clothes selling for between one-third to half of the retail price when choosing secondhand – for instance, Raya clothes from Petit Moi and Qiszar retail for an average of RM400, but average from as low as RM100 on Carousell. “Beyond affordability, second hand fashion has emerged as a lifestyle choice for many consumers
