S EVERAL key players of the national Under 23 (U-23) squad who were previously side lined have now been called up to strengthen the team for the U-23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers Group F campaign in Pathum Thani, Thailand, from Sept 3 to 9. Head coach Nafuzi Zain had earlier surprised many by omitting defender Muhammad Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili and strikers Muhammad Aliff Izwan Yuslan and Fergus Tierney from the centralised training camp in Thailand, which began on Aug 18. The Football Association of Malaysia, however, yesterday confirmed that all three players are included in the final list of 23 Harimau Muda play ers set to face tough challenges from the hosts, Lebanon and Mongolia. Muhammad Ubaidullah reportedly joined the team’s training sessions early last week, while Muhammad Aliff and Fergus are expected to com plete the squad soon after both were named for their respective Super League teams this week. The presence of Muhammad Ubaidullah and Muhammad Aliff, both of whom had previously been entrusted with the captain’s armband, is expected to strengthen the team’s structure in terms of experience and leadership on the pitch, while Fergus is seen as capable of adding bite to the attack.
… for Asian Cup qualifiers in Thailand
Nafuzi’s squad will kick off their campaign against Lebanon on Sept 3, followed by Mongolia (Sept 6), before facing Thailand in the final match (Sept 9), with all games scheduled at the Thammasat Stadium. Only the 11 group winners and the four best runners-up will qualify for the finals in Saudi Arabia next January. The U-23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers are regarded as a “redemption” stage for the U-23 squad after Nafuzi’s charges performed poorly in the U-23 Asean Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. Malaysia qualified for the U-23 Asian Cup in 2022 (Uzbekistan) and 2024 (Qatar), with their best achievement being a quarter-final appear ance in 2018 in China. Penang pay dearly at home WINLESS Penang FC have improved in their first four matches in the Super League this season, but were still paying dearly for their mistakes, said head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail.
He said several substitutions and tactical changes managed to create chances right up to the final minute, but luck was not on the side of the Panthers as they failed to convert them. He remains optimistic that the team’s fortune will improve, but acknowledged that a bigger chal lenge awaits when they face league leaders Johor Darul Ta’zim FC at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Sept 28. Kelantan head coach E. Elavarasan praised the performance of his players, especially goalkeeper Damyanov Damyan Valeriy, who made several saves against the home side. At the same time, he also lauded Penang for playing well despite being a man down. The match at the City Stadium saw Kelantan clinch their first win in four matches to move to fifth in the league table on five points, while Penang slipped to 11th place with only one point. – Bernama injuries,” he said in a video shared by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation. Earlier, the national men’s hockey team began their Group B campaign at the Asia Cup in style, coming from behind to thrash Bangladesh 4-1, before continuing their fine form with another 4-1 win over South Korea in their second match at the Bihar University of Sport Hockey Stadium. Only the top two teams from each group qualify for the Super Four stage, and the top two teams in the Super Four will contest the final on Sept 7. – Bernama
Wan Rohaimi said the team showed better energy and cohesion in Saturday’s match against Kelantan The Real Warriors (TRW) but lost 0-1 due to a player’s error. He said the sending off of a player in the second half also badly affected the team’s play. “We started well in the first half; everything went smoothly until an individual mistake enabled Kelantan TRW to take the lead. “A few minutes later, we were punished with a red card, which clearly affected the players’ emo tions and rhythm of play,” he said at a post-match press conference. Wan Rohaimi said his players displayed tremen dous spirit in the second half despite being forced to play with only 10 men. NATIONAL men’s hockey head coach Sarjit Singh hopes his players can go through the Super Four round of the Asia Cup 2025 in Bihar free from injuries. Yesterday, the Speedy Tigers confirmed an early slot in the round after recording their second Group B victory, despite still having one remaining match against Taiwan scheduled for tomorrow. “In the Super Four, the competition is definitely tougher because within five days, the team has to play four matches. “I hope that we remain free from any
