ship was also hit that night but the crew was rescued. More than four and a half years into the war that Moscow launched in 2022, Black Sea shipping has increasingly been drawn into a prolonged battle of economic endurance. Ukraine and Russia are among the world’s largest exporters of grain. Russia has been bombing Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, forcing Ukraine to rely increasingly on river ports on the Danube and shipping routes close to the coasts of Nato members Bulgaria and Romania. Ukraine, for its part, has increasingly targeted Russian grain exporting ships in other parts of the Black Sea and the Azov Sea at the mouth of the Don River. – Reuters ride was involved in the incident in Georgia, but local media identified it as the Goliath roller coaster. The roller coaster reaches top speeds of 113 kph and heights of 61m, according to the park’s website. The incident comes after Six Flags decided last month to shut down a popular roller coaster in its California theme park after dozens of people claimed to have suffered brain damage while riding it. – AFP

Bulgarian officials said five crew members had been rescued but 11 were still listed as missing from the ship which sank off the coast of the village of Krapets. Bulgarian media identified the vessel as the cargo ship Azov Concord . Its Turkiye based manager was not immediately available for comment. Another ship, the Chelsea 3 sailing under Maltese flag, was also hit by three drones overnight, Bulgarian officials said. All crew from that ship – seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis – were rescued and none seriously injured. A week ago nine Syrian sailors and one Egyptian were lost at sea from a ship that sank when hit by drones in Bulgaria’s Black Sea exclusive economic zone. Another authorities responded immediately and that they were fully cooperating with local officials. “We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park,” the spokesperson said. Theme park operator Six Flags, which has properties throughout North America, has temporarily closed nine similar rollercoasters across six parks “out of an abundance of caution”. Officials did not specify which

“This is absolutely unacceptable ... another attack in Bulgarian territorial waters,” Radev said. The attacks were also condemned by Ukraine and the EU. “The Black Sea has become another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “Those responsible should be held accountable.” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the strike “once again demonstrates Moscow’s disregard for civilian lives”. “The Black Sea is a lifeline for global food security. Russia is attacking it to weaponise hunger and hold the world hostage,” he said.

SOFIA: Eleven sailors were missing at sea yesterday from a ship sunk by a drone attack off the coast of Bulgaria, the second deadly sinking of a cargo vessel in the area in a week, prompting Bulgaria to summon Russia’s ambassador. Two cargo ships were hit by drones overnight and one was sunk, Bulgarian officials said. Bulgaria stopped short of explicitly accusing Russia of carrying out the attacks but Prime Minister Rumen Radev said their outcome “benefits the Russian Federation”. There was no immediate

The organisers, the De Sanctis Foundation, said the award was to “recognise those who every day help make human rights a reality”. Jury member Giovanna Botteri, a journalist and writer, praised AFP’s “incredible dedication in documenting on the ground the conflicts in the Middle East, the Gaza Strip and Ukraine”. The award ceremony in Italy’s supreme court in Rome was attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. Pizaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and the highest-ranking Catholic clergyman in the Middle East, gave a keynote speech. AFP Europe director Pierre Ausseill collected the award on behalf of Agence France-Presse. In his speech, he said human rights were “a common thread running through much of our work”. Ausseill paid tribute to video journalist Arman Soldin, who was killed aged 32 by Russian fire in eastern Ukraine in 2023. Soldin began his AFP career with an internship at the agency’s Rome bureau. The world’s oldest news agency, AFP employs 1,840 journalists.
