No new route back PGA Tour not considering more pathways for LIV golfers’ return T HE PGA Tour has no plans to introduceanother pathway for LIV Golf players to return to its membership, chief executive meritocracy, membership rules and accountability. “As I said a few weeks ago in Atlanta, there are really three things when it comes to anyone who wants to compete on the PGA Tour,” he said. “One, the PGA Tour is built on meri LIV Golf recently filed for bank ruptcy and is seeking alternative fund ing after losing the billion-dollar back ing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Rolapp, however, said the PGA Tour’s latest decisions were not made specifically in response to LIV Golf.
Tiger spotted on golf course TIGER WOODS fuelled speculation about a possible return to competi tive golf after the 15-time major champion was spotted working on his tee shot at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey yesterday. A short video clip of Woods hit
His most recent professional vic tory came at the 2019 Zozo Championship, while his playing schedule was further affected by the serious injuries he suffered in a car crash in 2021. The accident severely injured his lower right leg and required exten sive rehabilitation. Woods has also undergone seven back surgeries, including a disc replacement in October. His latest public appearance on the course came less than two weeks after he pleaded no contest to charges of wilful, wanton and reckless driving and refusing to sub mit to a urine test following a March crash in Martin County, Florida. Woods agreed to concurrent five-year suspensions of his driving licence and was fined US$1,000 (RM4,200), with a DUI charge stem ming from the crash dropped as part of the agreement. The American has yet to announce plans to return to tourna ment golf, leaving his next competi tive appearance uncertain. – Reuters
ting balls circulated online, prompt ing questions about whether the 50-year-old was preparing for a comeback, although he has made no commitment to return to com petition. Woods was in New Jersey ahead of The Nexus Cup, an exclusive ama teur team competition he hosts in support of his TGR Foundation. He was taking part in a clinic at the event when a spectator asked about the state of his game.“I can hit pretty much anything,”Woods said. The appearance offered a glimpse of Woods back on the course after his professional career has been disrupted by injuries and other issues in recent years. Woods has not competed in a major championship or any other competitive event since 2024.
officer Brian Rolapp said yesterday. The decision could prevent other LIV golfers from following the route taken by Brooks Koepka, who returned to the PGA Tour at the beginning of this year after agreeing to pay US$5 million (RM21 million) to charity and forfeit player equity grants for five years. Koepka is also not eligible to com pete in the PGA Tour’s signature events unless he qualifies for them. “In terms of where we are today, we are not currently contemplating a returning member programme like the one you saw in January,” Rolapp said during a conference call on the eligibil ity rules for the PGA Tour’s new compe tition model, which will begin in 2028. Rolapp said the tour’s approach was based on three principles –
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund from its launch in 2022 until this year, when the sovereign wealth fund with drew its financing. With the restructuring agreement executed on Sept 8, Oct 13 has emerged as a key deadline. Rahm said the legal process meant he was not in a position to make a decision yet, particularly with his wife expecting their fourth child. “There’s a long legal process they have to go through before a lot of things fall into place. I really can’t give you an answer right now,” he said. “I’m very close to expecting our fourth. Hopefully playing good this week, and at the end of the year. So, until this current season is done, I really won’t be able to give you an answer.” Rahm said the uncertainty surround ing LIV could provide an opportunity for the DP World Tour to strengthen its posi tion. “To be able to answer that, I think we need to know how exactly LIV 2.0 is going to shape up,” he said. “I think this is another opportunity for the DP World Tour to make some adjustments and gain some strength. That’s 100%. “I think this next year and a half is going to be possibly important to hope fully elevate the DP World Tour a little bit more.” – Reuters “Everyone at the PGA Tour, myself included, has been focused on what is best for the organisation,” he said. “The items approved by the boards yesterday are part of the progression in building the optimal competitive model for the future. “I think the Future Competition Committee was really just focused on the competitive model that we’ve been discussing over the past few months. “So, it was really with a broader lens of how do we build the best tour. It was not really looked at specifically on any one particular… on LIV or any other consideration. So that’s generally how we thought about it.” The PGA Tour’s new competition model is scheduled to take effect in 2028. – Reuters
JON RAHM (pic) remains non committal about his future with LIV Golf as the Saudi backed circuit seeks to restructure following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The Spaniard, who is in England for this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, said nothing had changed since he last week declared himself “more than willing to fulfil” his existing LIV contract. Asked yesterday whether that meant he had yet to commit to LIV 2.0, Rahm replied: “I said what I said. No, nothing’s changed. It would be the same answer.” LIV has asked the US bank ruptcy court for permission to reject its existing player con tracts, meaning Rahm’s contrac tual obligations could poten tially end if the request is approved. Rahm, who reportedly tocracy. Every player, whether they are a member or want to become one, must earn their place. “Two, we are a membership organi sation; we have rules, and those rules exist for lots of reasons, including fair ness and competitive balance. Rules matter, and they must be enforced. “Which brings me to No. 3, account ability and discipline. These are essen tial elements for any sports league and are certainly for the integrity of the PGA Tour and the sport. It’s what holds the tour together. Those are guiding princi ples for us.” Former PGA Tour players who joined LIV Golf after the rival circuit was launched in 2022 were suspended from the PGA Tour for breaching its conflict ing-tournament regulations.
