F OR a country where baseball reigns supreme and cricket barely registers on the sporting radar, Japan is about to host a fortnight of sport unlike any other in its history. Some of the biggest names in world cricket, including powerhouse India, are set to descend on Japanese soil next week and transform a nation known for staging the odd regional quali fier into an unlikely hub of top-tier cricket. The unprecedented stretch of high-level cricket is the result of diplomatic manoeuvring, corporate sponsorship and years of quiet ground work by the Japan Cricket Association (JCA), which has been helping the sport take root in the country. The JCA pulled off a major coup when it per suaded men’s Twenty20 world champions India to play the home side in Sano on Sept 22, marking the first time associate member Japan will face an International Cricket Council (ICC) full member. Former world champions Pakistan and Sri Lanka, along with fellow Test-playing nations
ENGLAND’S white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum said he wants newly-appointed mentor Kevin Pietersen (pic) to shake things up and has encouraged the former Ashes and Twenty20 World Cup-winning batter to speak up if he has ideas on how to improve the side. Pietersen was appointed last week and joined the coaching staff ahead of the series against Sri Lanka, with his involvement extending through a busy period culminating in next year’s one-day international World Cup. “He’s obviously got an incredible pedigree as a player and a lot of guys grew up idolising Kev. He’s brought a ton of energy to the setup within the last 24 hours,” McCullum told reporters yesterday. “I’ve mentioned to him that I don’t want him to be buried in one specific skillset. I want him to look across the environment and chal lenge me privately around ways we can improve or things we can do differently.” New Zealander McCullum was sacked as England’s Test coach in July, with his tenure marred by off-field controversies involving high-profile players like Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Gus Atkinson. McCullum struck a firm tone on conduct, saying he would no longer select players who did not maintain professional standards. “There is a lot of talent around – if you’re not prepared to do that, there are other guys who will be given those opportunities,” he added. England host Sri Lanka in a three-match T20 series before taking them on in three ODIs. – Reuters Bangladesh and Afghanistan, will also be in action at a repurposed baseball venue in Nisshin in September when the Asian Games cricket competition begins. JCA Chief Executive Naoki Alex Miyaji is excited at the prospect, while remaining clear eyed about the limits of what two weeks of cricket can achieve. Japan has only 7,300 registered players and 16 cricket grounds. The women’s T20 team are ranked 39th in the world, two rungs above the men’s side. “One match or competition itself won’t change anything, and we are certainly not going to think that suddenly it’s going to be as popular as baseball or football in Japan,” Miyaji told Reuters . “But the match against India is the first page of a new era.” The JCA had been working for more than a year to persuade its Indian counterpart, the BCCI, to play a T20 International in Sano. Those efforts gained momentum in recent months when the Japanese government got involved. “With the government involvement and keenness to use cricket as sports diplomacy, we were able to go to the Indian board and offer this opportunity to train and play a T20 International in Sano,” Miyaji said. The JCA had offered the Sano International Cricket Ground as a venue for the Asian Games competition but local organ isers opted to re-purpose a baseball stadium on the outskirts of Nagoya to avoid logistical issues. A Sri Lankan curator is currently over seeing pitch preparations in Nisshin for the Games. – Reuters Pietersen gets free rein
