MSU marks decade of marine conservation with MYCORAL 10

M ANAGEMENT and Science University (MSU) marked a decade of marine conservation and community engagement through MYCORAL 10: A Decade Celebrating Life Below Water , held from Aug 20 to Aug 23 in Setiu and surrounding coastal communities in Terengganu. The four-day programme brought together more than 180 MSUrians, members of the MyCoral community, divers, local residents, alumni, strategic partners and conservation stakeholders for a series of environmental, health and community-focused activities aimed at strengthening awareness and collective action for marine and coastal conservation. The programme began with participants arriving at Penyu Bari Resort before continuing with community outreach activities at the Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan Setiu, Perkampungan Rhu 10. Through the Embracing Community Healthcare Project (ECHO), the initiative provided a mobile health clinic, health awareness activities, dental check-ups and hygiene education for members of the local community. Participants also engaged with the MyCoral community through social entrepreneurship activities with MyCoral Community Divers and learning sessions at the MyCoral Community Learning Centre (CLC). Community engagement continued through a gotong-royong initiative in Kampung Penarek, encouraging collective responsibility for maintaining clean and sustainable surroundings. The conservation-focused activities included a visit to the WWF Tuntung Sanctuary Centre in

Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The programme demonstrated how education, community engagement and multi-stakeholder collaboration can drive meaningful action towards healthier communities, and more sustainable marine and coastal ecosystems. The initiative was further strengthened through collaboration with university partners, including Universitas Pattimura Ambon, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Politeknik Negeri Medan and Politeknik Negeri Malang. Support from strategic partners, including Dorken Reef Resources, the Department of Fisheries and Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan Setiu, Perkampungan Rhu 10, further reflected a shared commitment to marine conservation, environmental awareness and sustainable community development. Celebrating ten years of MyCoral, it served not only as a milestone but also as a renewed call for continued collective action to protect the oceans, preserve marine biodiversity and ensure that life below water can thrive for generations to come.

Timor Leste, Syria and the Maldives. A symbolic launch was held to commemorate the installation of the 100th MyCoral Coral Frame, alongside the unveiling of the MyCoral Awareness Signboard. The programme continued in Kampung Mangkok with the Go Green Gardening initiative, which focused on mangrove planting. Participants planted mangrove seedlings and installed programme signage at the planting site, complementing the coral restoration efforts by highlighting the interconnected role of coastal ecosystems in supporting biodiversity, protecting shorelines and strengthening environmental resilience. An engagement session with the MyCoral Community at the Community Learning Centre in Kampung Mangkok further strengthened the programme’s community focus. The session included the activation of the centre’s solar power system and the presentation of appreciation certificates to MyCoral Community Divers in recognition of their contributions to marine conservation. The programme was joined by MSU president and founder Prof Tan Sri Datuk Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, who took part in the shore clean-up activity to emphasise the importance of keeping marine environments clean and free from waste. Also present were MSU vice chancellor Prof Puan Sri Datuk Dr Junainah Abd Hamid, members of the senior management team, alumni, strategic partners and students, including international students from China, Indonesia, Bahrain, India, Japan, Seychelles,

A key highlight of MYCORAL 10 was the Coral Restoration Programme at Pulau Gelok, which brought participants together for hands-on reef rehabilitation and coastal clean-up activities.
