assault for most of the day in an entertaining innings which occupied 248 balls highlighted by five sixes and 21 fours. He looked destined for a double-century when a miscued hook off Alzarri Joseph was held by Shamar Joseph on the fine-leg boundary minutes before the end of the day. STOKES BIDS FAREWELL TO FANS Ben Stokes posted one last farewell to international cricket yesterday, thanking fans and teammates alike for a “mad 15 years”. The 35-year-old former England captain retired in extraordinary fashion during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, making his exit public on the fourth afternoon and promptly tak ing a wicket next ball. Stokes, post ing on X after a couple of days away
with his family, thanked colleagues and supporters for their backing. “It’s been a mad 15 years,” he wrote. “It’s had everything thrown in there, from the highest highs to the lowest lows (on and off the field). My time was up, and no one was going to be able to make that decision other than me. But in the meantime, I just want to say I love every single England fan and every single cricket fan who’s supported me over the years. I love every single person I’ve walked out onto the field with representing England. I could go on and on, but I hope you get the gist of how much I loved doing what I did for 15 years. I’m looking forward to being a fan and supporting the team, and the odd day in hospitality won’t go amiss. Family, friends, teammates, fans, I love yas (sic) all.”

Cheating claim riles up Ferrari boss ahead of British GP
FREDERIC VASSEUR fumed at the perceived accusation from Toto Wolff that Ferrari might be “cheating” given their aggressive upgrades programme. The Scuderia have been devel oping their car swiftly this season with new aerodynamic parts introduced at each of the last three races, while updated engines also made their first appearance in Austria last week end. F1 teams are limited in terms of how much developing they can do by the annual cost cap, set for this year at £161 million (RM837m). With that in mind, Mercedes chief Wolff said after last week’s race: “We’re a little bit surprised that Ferrari can throw these huge updates at the car in the way they do. “In my opinion they need to be running out of money soon, cost cap money, because we can’t do that. We’re simply lacking the buffer in cost cap to be able to bring so many parts in the way they do.
spoken privately to Wolff, with whom he has a generally good relationship, about the matter. “I think it was better to wait to speak,” he laughed, admitting it would be better for the two of them to broach the subject with cool heads. He went on to say he “honestly has no clue” why Wolff singled out Ferrari for criticism when other team have been bringing plenty of upgrades themselves. “If you want to ask something to Toto, go to Toto and ask him why he’s talking about me. Don’t ask me the question.” Ferrari have more develop ments in the pipeline on the engine front. Having played down the sig nificance of the first step intro duced in Austria last weekend, reports in Italy suggest a more sig nificant development is due in time for the Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari’s home race at Monza, in early September. Vasseur would not confirm that timeline. – Express Newspapers
“Hopefully that’s going to change towards the end of the sea son when they won’t be able to bring any parts anymore. At least the logic would say that, and we’re going to come with more.” In yesterday’s press conference at the British Grand Prix, Vasseur brought up those words from Wolff when he was asked about Ferrari’s upgrades plans. “I found it quite ironic, coming from Toto and Mercedes,” the Frenchman smirked. “When Red Bull is developing or when Mercedes is developing, they are geniuses. When we are developing, we are cheating. I think you have to calm down with this. “We didn’t bring more parts than Red Bull or another one. I don’t know if it was a joke.” When he was asked if he felt Wolff had accused Ferrari of cheating, Vasseur added: “If you think that we overshoot the cost cap, for me it is going in this direc tion.” Vasseur admitted he has not
