‘Public trust most valuable asset of judiciary’
PKR candidate list for Johor, N. Sembilan polls almost ready JOHOR BAHRU: PKR’s list of candidates for the state polls in Johor and Negeri Sembilan is now 99% final and the official announcement of the candidates is expected to be made in the next few days, said its secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh. She said the party would contest 20 state seats in Johor and 16 seats in Negeri Sembilan. “We will present a balanced combination of old and new faces, including women and young people. Regarding the percentage of new faces, wait for the announcement day,” she said after attending the Rahmah Sales Programme at Econsave Taman Daya yesterday. Commenting on Johor Amanah’s claim on the Puteri Wangsa constituency, Fuziah said the issue of the seat dispute had been handed over entirely to the top leadership of the component parties to be resolved. Johor Amanah had previously stated that the seat belonged to the party after being loaned to the Malaysian Democratic Alliance Party (Muda) in the 2022 state election. Johor Amanah vice-chairman Dr Zuhan Zain had said he did not agree with the seat being handed over to PKR. “That (the claim that the seat belonged to them) is a claim from Johor Amanah but this matter will be resolved at the highest level,” said Fuziah. Touching on the status of action against Subang MP Wong Chen who challenged PKR to sack him following a disciplinary investigation, Fuziah said the matter had been handed over to the party’s Disciplinary Board for further action. – Bernama
KUALA LUMPUR: Public trust remains the judiciary’s most valuable asset and must be earned through integrity, accountability and consistent conduct, said Chief Justice Tun Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh. Drawing on the legacy of former chief justice Tun Zaki Azmi, he said institutional leaders must be prepared to make difficult decisions and work to leave behind stronger, more trusted institutions for future generations. “Public trust is not inherited or assumed but earned gradually through consistent conduct and integrity in judicial outcomes across every level of the court system. “He (Tun Zaki) earned it, he protected it and he left this institution more worthy of it than he found it,” Wan Ahmad Farid said at the inaugural Tun Zaki Azmi Lecture titled “Leading with Courage, Stewarding Justice” at the Asian International Arbitration Centre yesterday. The nation’s top judge added that everyone entrusted with leadership responsibilities should recognise the value of his contributions. He said decisions made behind the scenes, often under pressure and without recognition, play an important role in strengthening institutions. “I want to say this to every person in this room who carries a responsibility, who has felt the weight of institutional leadership, who has PETALING JAYA: The proposed Senior Citizen Bill must go beyond symbolism and provide meaningful protection for older persons facing neglect, abuse, financial insecurity and social isolation, said Senior Citizen Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. Welcoming the government’s move to table the Bill in the parliamentary session next week, Lee described the legislation as timely and crucial as Malaysia moves steadily towards becoming an ageing nation. He said the growing number of senior citizens and increasing life expectancy highlights the need for stronger legal safeguards to ensure that older persons could live with dignity, security and proper care. “A Senior Citizen Bill is important because it will provide a more comprehensive legal and policy framework to safeguard the rights and welfare of older persons. “Many senior citizens today face various challenges, including neglect, abandonment, financial insecurity, loneliness, poor healthcare access, abuse and social isolation,” he told theSun. Lee said some elderly individuals are left without adequate family support while others struggle to meet their daily needs amid rising living costs and insufficient protection systems. He said the proposed law should address key issues including healthcare access, social protection, elder abuse prevention, mental health support, affordable housing, accessible public facilities, employment opportunities for active seniors and long-term care services. He added that stronger mechanisms are also needed to protect older persons from physical, emotional and financial abuse. Lee stressed that senior citizens should not be viewed as a burden to society but as individuals who have contributed significantly to the country’s development. “Their wisdom, experience and sacrifices Ű BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI newsdesk@thesundaily.com

asked himself whether he is leaving things better than he found them. Your work matters. “The decisions you make in quiet rooms, under pressure, without applause, matter. And the wisdom you have built through those decisions is not yours alone to keep. It belongs to us. To this community. To the next generation of leaders who will inherit what we build here, and who deserve to inherit something worthy of their dedication.” He said the Tun Zaki Lectures on Leadership and Stewardship and the Leadership and Stewardship Research Initiative are intended to promote meaningful dialogue on leadership and develop practical scholarship relevant to the realities of institutional leadership, Bernama reported. “The Tun Zaki Lectures on Leadership and Stewardship are not a ceremonial series. They are a serious, sustained effort to create a living dialogue between those who have led and those who are preparing to lead, to bring experience and principle into conversation with each other in a space that takes
“Meanwhile, and Stewardship Research Initiative will do the longer, deeper work alongside it, building scholarship that is rigorous, honest and directly relevant to the realities of leading institutions under pressure. Not theory for its own sake but knowledge we can actually use and pass on.” The public lecture platform is named in recognition of the sixth Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Zaki Azmi, for his continuing contributions to leadership, stewardship and institutional responsibility. It serves as the founding platform for the Leadership and Stewardship Research Initiative which is a long-term platform dedicated to advancing leadership, stewardship, governance and public trust. Founded on the belief that leadership lessons should be preserved and shared, the initiative seeks to capture the wisdom of distinguished leaders and transform it into lasting knowledge for future generations. the Leadership
