No right answer Gasly podium reinstatement opens ‘can of worms’, says Villeneuve
Shubman guides India to victory
CAPTAIN Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 84 secured a se ven-wicket win for India over Afghanistan yester day as the hosts chased down a target of 195 with 13 balls to spare in a rain-delayed one-day interna tional in Dharamshala that was shortened to a 25 over contest. The visitors’ innings was anchored by opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored a century in 48 balls, the fastest by an Afghan batter in ODIs, but his teammates crumbled under pressure in the first of the three-match series. “It was kind of a Twenty-20 game,” said Shubman. “Gurbaz batted brilliantly… but I think the way we pulled back (the game) in the middle and the death overs was brilliant.” After India chose to bowl, Gurbaz hit Arshdeep Singh (2-27) for a six and a four in the first over and refused to slow down even as three Afghan batters fell early, scoring four runs between them.
P IERRE GASLY’S reinstatement to the Monaco Grand Prix podium should not have hap pened and opens a “can of worms” with no fair solution, 1997 Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve said ahead of yesterday night’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Alpine driver Gasly was demoted to seventh after the previous Sunday’s race when two five-second penalties were applied for pitlane speeding, but the Frenchman was reinstated to third on Friday after his Renault-owned team won a review. Formula One, which provides the timing, admitted a “measurement dis crepancy”. The decision meant others were demoted, including some who were handed and served time penalties dur ing the race. “The issue I have with this is that they (the teams) knew on Friday (there was a problem),” Villeneuve told Reuters in Barcelona. “That’s why you have Friday and Saturday, to figure it out. “Some of the teams took it easy, to not get caught (out). So they maybe lost a little bit of speed through the pitlane to be safe. So they end up being penalised if you give positions back. “The other thing is, how do you give the positions back to the drivers who actually paid the penalty? “There is no correct answer any more. In the first place they shouldn’t have given it back… It’s opened a can of worms for the future.”
Villeneuve said it would have been different if there had been a power cut or something beyond Formula One’s con trol. “Someone will have to pay the price somewhere and that’s what’s difficult. There’s no right answer, no right thing to do,” added the Canadian. “If I was like Gasly I would have fought to get the podium back. If I was like (McLaren’s Oscar) Piastri I would fight for him not to get it back.” McLaren and Red Bull, who had Isack Hadjar on the podium after Gasly’s demotion but now miss out, have said they intend to appeal and have several days to file the paperwork. Williams boss James Vowles said his team would support them. “I’m surprised we have the rein statement, being frank about it,” he told Sky Sports . “It doesn’t really affect us personally, he (Gasly) was ahead of us whichever way you do that, I think it’s more it creates a bit of a mess now.” “What do you do with George (Russell)? What you do with (Oscar) Piastri, who also in that circumstance should have been on the podium as a result. That’s the mess I don’t feel com fortable about.” Mercedes driver Russell served a drive-through penalty during the race resulting from pitlane speeding, the same offence Gasly was punished for, and failed to score while McLaren’s Piastri served a time penalty at a pitstop. The Australian dropped to fifth after Gasly’s reinstatement. – Reuters
Eight sixes and eight boundaries helped Gurbaz to complete his ninth ODI century in the 15th over, with Afghanistan at 135-3. But Nitish Kumar Reddy (2-31) knocked over Gurbaz’s (102) middle stump in the next over and a patient knock from cap tain Hashmatullah Shahidi
(27) ended soon after, taking away the visitors’ momen tum. Azmatullah Omarzai scored a quick 26 off 16 balls but no other Afghan batter reached
double figures as the visitors were all out for 194 with a ball to spare, with India debutant Gurnoor Brar taking three wickets. Wicketkeeper Gurbaz and Rashid Khan combined to get Indian opener Rohit Sharma (16) run out in the sixth over, but they could not put the hosts under pres sure as Shubman and Ishan Kishan (34) kept the runs flowing. The world No. 5 showed real staying power to win 6 7(4), 7-6(14), 7-6(6) having been forced to earlier finish off his quarterfinal against Sho Shimabukuro. “Sometimes tennis doesn’t go to plan,” Shelton said after his third three-set win of the week at the ATP grasscourt event. “I lost the first set in every single match I played. But there are a lot of ways to win a match. I’ve been choosing the most difficult route.” Shelton saved his match points in a marathon second-set tiebreak on his way to a two-hour-52-minute victory. “I’m very tired but excited to be playing him in another final,”said Shelton, who is seeking a third title of the season. Reigning champion Fritz had things easier as he beat the unpredictable Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-4, banging down 13 aces. At the Libema Open in Hertogenbosch, Australia’s Alex de Minaur beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-0 to set up a final against Kamil Majchrzak who beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6(4), 6-1.

Raducanu to face Vekic in Queen’s final
FORMER US Open champion Emma Raducanu said that she is back to her best after the British star won twice in the space of just six hours to earn a Queen’s Club final clash with Croatia’s Donna Vekic. Raducanu reached the first grass-court final of her career by thrashing American sixth seed Iva Jovic 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Wimbledon warm-up event in west London on Saturday night. Raducanu has not dropped a set on route to the final, beating two players ranked in the world’s top 20. “It means everything to be doing this here at Queen’s. The whole day has been electric,“ Raducanu said. “This week has been incredible, I really enjoy playing here and that shows in my tennis. Ask any British player and they would love to lift the title here. We’ve been through some tough moments in the last few months but have been putting in the hard work and I want to thank my team for helping me get into the final.”
