AMERICAN teenager Iva Jovic earned her first career victory against a top-five ranked oppo nent as she battled past compa triot Amanda Anisimova to reach the semifinals of the Queen’s Club Championships yesterday. The 18-year-old produced a fearless display on the slick grass court to beat the second seed 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Top seed and world No. 2 Elena Rybakina also bowed out as she lost 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to British wild card ߑ Katie Boulter. Both Rybakina and Boulter were playing their second matches of the day as organisers played catch up after rain washed out the entire programme on Thursday. Former Wimbledon champion Rybakina had not hit a ball in anger all week after receiving a bye in the first round. Earlier in the day she had come within two points of being sliced out of the tournament by defending cham pion

decider. But Boulter produced some aggressive tennis to stay in touch and then broke Rybakina’s serve in the ninth game before serving out an impressive victory and set ting up a semi-final against Croatia’s lucky loser from qualify ing Donna Vekic. It ߑ was the big gest win of Boulter’s career by ranking. Vekic, ranked 76th, also had a busy day, first beating Czech Marie Bouzkova 7-6(9), 6-3 and then returning to beat another Czech, former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Raducanu’s match against Rakhimova was held over to yes terday after light ߑ ran out on a marathon day at the London venue. Jovic had never won a WTA main draw match on grass until this week but is proving a fast learner. “Every match I feel more confi dent on the grass,” Jovic, ranked 19th in the world, said. “I have to keep working on my serve, my return – the first couple of shots in the point are super important on grass. “But it’s trending in the right direction. Just stacking up the matches.” – Reuters Mboko eyes playing with Serena again VICTORIA MBOKO says she will miss the rest of the grass court tennis season with a knee injury but hopes to resume her doubles partnership with US great Serena Williams. The 19-year-old Canadian, ranked ninth in the world, said she suffered a medial collateral ligament injury in her opening singles match against Karolina Pliskova at the WTA tournament at Queen’s Club. “Unfortunately, my fall on Wednesday caused an injury to the MCL on my left knee, which sadly means I will miss the remainder of the grass season,” Mboko wrote. “This unfortunately means Wimbledon too, a tournament I had been so looking forward to playing this year.” The setback came after Mboko teamed up with 44-year-old Williams for a doubles victory that marked the US superstar’s eagerly anticipated return to competitive tennis after four years. The two beat Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe in straight sets, but Williams’s comeback was temporarily on hold after Mboko’s injury forced her out of the London tournament. In her post, Mboko thanked Williams for the “incredible opportunity to play alongside you”. “I learnt so much from you and am so sorry our tournament came to an end pre maturely, but I hope we can play together again soon and finish what we started,” she said. Williams offered an encouraging reply. “My heart,” she wrote. “My (diamond) You will be even more amazing when you are back.” – AFP

Tatjana Maria, eventually finding her range to win 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-0. Mother of two Maria, 38, defused Rybakina’s power game with ߑ her unique blend of under cut forehands and backhands – the ball skidding low on the turf. But once Rybakina man aged to cut out the

unforced errors there was only one outcome likely in the decider. Rybak i na also battled back from los ing the first set against Boulter late in the eve ning on the Andy Murray Arena and looked favourite to reach the
