All over Down Under MALAY S IA’ S campaign at the Australian Open badminton championships came to an end after the nation’s last two representatives, men’s singles shuttler Justin Hoh and women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, were knocked out in the quarterfinals in Sydney yesterday. Competing in the Super 500 tournament at Olympic Boulevard, Justin was unable to overcome Indonesia’s Moh Zaki Ubaidillah, going down 7-21, 13-21 in just 38 minutes. The 22-year-old Malaysian struggled to find his rhythm against the Indonesian youngster, who dominated proceedings from the outset with sharp attacking play and consistent court coverage. Despite showing signs of improvement in the second game, Justin was unable to close the gap as Moh Zaki sealed a comfortable straight-games victory, where he will face China’s Dong Tian Yao for a place in the final. Malaysia’s teenage women’s doubles pair Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah, were also shown the exit door after losing 13-21, 17-21 to Indonesia’s seventh-seeded combination of Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari. The defeats marked the end of Malaysia’s challenge in the tournament, although the performances of Justin and the young women’s doubles pair provided encouraging signs for the future as they continue to gain valuable experience on the international circuit. Ee Wei hoping for a miracle INJU R ED national No. 1 mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei is refusing to completely shut the door on a World Championship title defence in New Delhi and the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Ee Wei, instead, said she is clinging to hope for a miracle despite facing a race against time to recover from a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. “I can’t confirm it now (World Championships and Asian Games participation). Maybe I need to pray to God to give me a miracle. As an athlete, of course I want to play, but the injury happened quite close to the tournament, so there is nothing much I can do,” she told reporters when met at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Ee Wei also said she is still awaiting the MRI assessment before deciding whether to proceed with surgery. Despite trying to stay positive, Ee Wei admitted that the setback had taken an emotional toll on her. “It’s okay; I think I need to move on and do my best for the recovery and return to the court. Everything happened for a reason. Maybe it’s time for me to rest. What I can do is to maintain discipline and follow the instructions of my coach and physiotherapist,” she said. Speedy Tigers crush Scotland THE national men’s hockey squad started their 2025-2026 FIH Men’s Nations Cup campaign on the right foot after defeating Scotland 5-2 in their opening Group A match in Cape Town, South Africa, on Thursday night. Malaysia opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute through a field goal by Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook before Muhammad Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal doubled the national squad’s lead via a penalty stroke in the 34th minute. However, Scotland narrowed the gap five minutes later when Jamie Golden converted a penalty stroke in the 39th minute to make it 2-1. The national team, coached by Brendon Carolan, restored their two-goal cushion when Nik Muhammad Aiman Nik Rozemi smashed in a field goal in the 42nd minute, before Muhammad Azrai once again got his name on the scoresheet through a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Scotland attempted a comeback when Andrew McConnell converted a penalty corner in the 57th minute, but Muhammad Azrai capped off his brilliant night with a hattrick via a field goal in the 59th minute to seal the victory for The Speedy Tigers. Malaysia will face Japan in their second group match overnight. Apart from Scotland and Japan, Malaysia is also drawn alongside New Zealand and South Korea in Group A.
