your list. A 90-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur, this sleepy coastal town has rightfully garnered a reputation as the perfect escape for weary urbanites. Should you ever wish to visit Tanjung Sepat, here is a handy guide to everything worth checking out.

WITH how stifling life in Kuala Lumpur can be, it is always tempting to disappear from the city just for a little while. If you ever need a quick getaway, Tanjung Sepat should be at the top of

Lover’s Bridge Possibly Tanjung Sepat’s most famous attraction, the concrete pier you see today is relatively modern. Its predecessor was a rickety wooden structure, which was torn down due to structural and safety issues. In any case, the pier still has an air of romance attached to it. Back in the day, the wives of fishermen would wait on the pier every evening, hoping to see their husbands return safely from sea. While that practice is a relic of the past, Lover’s Bridge remains popular with visitors, including couples getting their wedding photographs taken here.

Kuan Wellness EcoPark Bird’s nest is a delicacy for many Asian people and this is the right spot to learn more about how the nutritious food is made and what its benefits are. The owners are bird’s nest producers and they welcome visitors to this swiftlet farm and factory of theirs. While the adults throng the visitor centre and shop, little kids will probably find something fun to do in the ecopark’s mini zoo. Rabbits, parrots, deer and porcupines are among the furry residents here and kids are free to feed and pet them. Probably not the porcupines though.

Ganofarm Mushroom Farm An organic mushroom farm, Ganofarm lets visitors take a closer look at how fungi are grown on an industrial-scale. Most people have an idea of what a vegetable farm looks like, but a mushroom farm is very different. For one, the mushrooms are typically grown in a dry, controlled environment. In addition to being tasty, the mushrooms grown and sold here are also of the medicinal variety, so visitors can get their hands on an assortment of fungus-based health products to bring home.

Pantai Cunang Not to be confused with Langkawi’s popular Pantai Cenang, Tanjung Sepat’s Pantai Cunang offers a humbler experience, as well as a peaceful one. This white sandy beach is kept pristine by the local Mah Meri people who live by the shoreline. There are many shady casuarina trees, which provide convenient shelter to beachgoers. You can also check out the nearby Mah Meri village, where the wooden huts really give off a kampung vibe.

Liulishan Temple Buddhist and non-Buddhist visitors alike are welcome to explore the grounds of the Liulishan Temple, a place of worship which offers a serene and spiritual experience. The temple is dedicated to Yaoshi Fo, the “Medicine Buddha”. According to belief, this deity is capable of healing the sick, hence drawing worship from devotees suffering from health problems. Like any good temple, traditional Buddhist designs, in the form of murals and reliefs, are integrated into the temple’s architecture. Expect this place to be a hub of activity during religious or cultural festivals such as Wesak Day or Chinese New Year.

Joo Fa Trading Housed within an old kampung house, Joo Fa Trading is one of Tanjung Sepat’s most famous coffee manufacturers. A Hokkien family runs the place, though the coffee they roast here is actually Hainanese. The place is impossible to miss, due to the strong smell of coffee which beckons you closer as soon as you enter the right alley. The owner welcomes visitors, happily giving folks a tour of the place and showing how his coffee is roasted the old fashioned way. Expect to be treated to free samples of classic Hainanese coffee.

Multi Rich Pitaya 20km outside Tanjung Sepat proper, this is a dragonfruit farm worth dropping by if you are a fan of the bizarre-looking fruit. Here, visitors are treated to the sight of rows after rows of dragonfruit plants, sometimes with flowers or fruits still attached. Did you know the dragonfruit plant is actually a type of cactus? There is a 9m-tall dragonfruit statue which is the centre of photography here. And if photography is not your cup of tea, just buy some dragonfruit for the folks back home.

Pantai Batu Laut Not too fond of overcrowded beaches? This quiet stretch of beach is an alluring alternative for the beachgoing introvert, especially compared with Morib Beach, which is right down the same coastline. If you are expecting a white, sandy beach a la Cherating, you may be disappointed. But if you are fine with a natural mangrove beach, complete with little crabs crawling out of the grey mud, then come over to dip your toes and just enjoy the view.
