FROM themed stays to global conventions, Malaysians fans are embarking on seichi junrei – anime pilgrimages across Asia, evident by a growing demand for anime and comic-related experiences when travelling with a 121% spike in searches by Malaysians year-on- year (y-o-y). This interest also translates to actual demand, as Malaysian fans are showing up for some of the region’s biggest events. Based on Trip.com’s ticket sales data, Malaysia ranked among the top 10 markets leading ticket sales for AnimeJapan 2026 and Hong Kong’s first-ever official Comic Con. Highly popular among Gen Zs and millennials, more than half of ticket buyers were aged between 25 to 34 years old and over half were males. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Comic Con 2026 has gained the attention of overseas fans from mainland China and Southeast Asia. Over eight in 10 ticket buyers are Gen Zs and millennials, demonstrating the popularity of anime culture among this age group. Interestingly, women constituted Muhamad Hasif Nasrudin said the concept allows visitors to feel as though they are physically inside a dynamic visual environment without the need for virtual reality devices. “Visitors are not just observing visuals, but experiencing being inside the space itself. This is what sets immersive media art apart from conventional galleries,” he said to Bernama during the Spectrum of Possibilities showcase recently. Hasif said of the venue’s 14 zones, several incorporate elements of nature and wildlife as part of efforts to infuse local identity into modern digital experiences.
