a seven-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday to boost their playoff hopes in the IPL. T20 sensation Sooryavanshi, who was playing as an impact substitute, struck his third half century of the season as he ham mered seven fours and 10 sixes in his 38-ball knock to guide

Langer is the latest to join the 15 year-old batting sensation fan club, saying bowlers need to worry because he is only going to improve. “In all my time I’ve seen some amazing players in 35 years of cricket,” Langer told reporters after their seven-wicket defeat in Jaipur. “To see a young man bat like that, not just tonight but through out the series, is breathtaking.” Langer said Sooryavanshi would only become more dan gerous as he learns to adapt to different conditions. Bottom-placed Lucknow are already out of the playoff race along with Mumbai. “We are proud as a team regardless of what our situation is right now,” said Rishabh Pant. “It hasn’t gone our way and everyone knows that but that doesn’t take away the fact that we are a good team.” – AFP lion (RM1.8b) and the total purse KRW2 billion (RM5.2b), making this the largest tournament in its history,” tournament organisers trumpeted on April 24. However, just a week later Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced it would cease bankrolling LIV after the 2026 season after plung ing a reported US$5 billion (RM18.8b) into the breakaway circuit since it was founded in 2021. It has left the rebel tour facing an uncertain future as it scrambles to find new investors and sponsors. A number of LIV players will be in the field for the Korea Open when it begins in Chuncheon today, including two-time US Masters Champion Bubba Watson, Mexico’s Abraham Ancer and Korean-born New Zealander Danny Lee. LIV has also been bankrolling the Asian Tour’s International Series, leav ing in doubt the future of the mini-cir cuit elevated events which each offer US$2 million (RM7.9m) in prize money and a pathway to the LIV tour. The next International Series tour nament is scheduled to take place in Morocco from June 11-14. – AFP

Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already made the playoffs of the tournament that will conclude on May 31 in Ahmedabad. Sooryavanshi’s batting blitz trumped Lucknow opener Mitchell Marsh’s 96, a knock that steered his team to an imposing 220-5. The prodigy said he has cut out the noise surrounding his career. “I don’t really see too much, I don’t read newspapers and all, so I don’t think too much about it,” said Sooryavanshi. “I just think that this is only the start. If my career becomes long and I play for a long time, people will say many more things. My focus should just remain on the game and I should complete my journey.” He has hit one ton and has compiled his runs at a punishing strike-rate of 237.29. Lucknow’s head coach Justin

GOLF’S Asian Tour yesterday said it had axed a planned increase in prize money for this week’s Korea Open, just weeks after announcing a US$500,000 (RM2m) cash boost from LIV Golf. The LIV injection would have pushed the total prize fund from around US$1 million (RM4m) to a record US$1.5 million (RM6m) for the historic tournament first played in 1958. However, a statement to AFP said: “The Asian Tour can confirm the prize money for the Kolon Korea Open has been revised to the original amount of KRW1.4 billion (RM3.7b), the same as last year. “We communicated this revision to our members following an update from the title sponsor Kolon. “The champion will receive a bonus of KRW200 million (RM527,556) as pre viously announced.” In April, the Asian Tour announced the Korea Open prize fund boost to great fanfare. “With US$500,000 in prize money support from LIV Golf, with whom we have been expanding our partnership, the winner’s share will be KRW700 mil

SPINNER Taijul Islam took six wickets to lead Bangladesh to a 78-run win over Pakistan in the second Test and clinch a famous 2-0 series win yesterday. Pakistan, who started the fifth day on 316-7 while chasing a record 437, were bowled out for 328 in the first session in Sylhet after Mohammad Rizwan hit a valiant 94. It was Bangladesh’s first Test series win at home against Pakistan and a second successive sweep a’fter their 2-0 triumph on Pakistani soil in 2024. Wicketkeeper Rizwan kept Pakistan in the hunt for an unlikely win with a 166-ball stay after the visitors had slumped to 162-5 on day four. Rizwan put on an eighth wicket partnership of 54 with overnight partner Sajid Khan, who made 28. Taijul broke through to dis miss Sajid for his 18th Test five wicket haul and Shoriful Islam had Rizwan caught in the next over to end Pakistan’s resistance. He took the final wicket of Khurram Shahzad to return fig ures of 6-120 and trigger Bangladesh celebrations. The left-arm spinner also took 3-67 during Pakistan’s first innings 232. Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das scored 126 in their first-innings 278. Veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim scored 137 in the second to guide Bangladesh to 390, with contributions from Mahmudul Hasan Joy (52) and Litton (69). Bangladesh, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, won the open ing Test by 104 runs. – AFP

Ganna wins time-trial in Giro shake-up ITALY’S Filippo Ganna won the stage 10 time-trial at the Giro d’Italia yester day, as overnight leader Afonso Eulalio clung on to the pink jersey. Ineos rider Thymen Arensman had a great day and climbed to third at 1min 57sec while Felix Gall dropped to fourth at 2min 24sec. Australian Ben O’Connor climbed to fifth at 2min 48sec.

Eulalio now leads race favourite Jonas Vingegaard by just 27 seconds, an advantage that had been over six minutes when the Portuguese rider took control after last week’s rain lashed stage five. Eulalio had led by over two min utes overnight but looked set to lose the pink jersey on Tuesday before ral lying in the latter half of the long time trial. “I suffered, suffered and suffered,” said Bahrain Victorious climber Eulalio. “But here I am still in the lead.”

The potentially decisive stage was held on a flat 42km coastal run between Viareggio and Massa on the Tuscan coast. This was an eighth Giro stage win for Ganna, seven in the time-trial, and the 1min 52sec win ning margin speaks for itself. “This was built for me,” said the for mer track specialist who like runner up Arensman rides for Ineos. “This is the result of the work the team did this winter.” – AFP
