of the KTM, before he careered towards the wall and then cartwheeled through the air as he lost control on the gravel. Marquez was immediately rushed to the hospital where scans confirmed he had a marginal fracture on the vertebra near his neck as well as a fracture on his right collarbone. “Everything’s under control. I’m due to go into the operating theatre tonight (yesterday), but I couldn’t be in better hands,” Marquez said on X . “Thank you all so much for your con cern and for the kind messages I’ve been receiving.” After the race restarted, LCR Honda’s Zarco was involved in a crash when he braked late on turn one of the first lap as he took out Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia and Honda’s Luca Marini in a three-rider pile-up. Both Bagnaia and Marini immediately signalled for help from the track marshals after Zarco tumbled across the gravel with his leg caught on Bagnaia’s bike. “Don’t worry, we’re still waiting for the test results. I’ve got a neck brace on, but it’s more of a nuisance than anything else,” Zarco said on Instagram . “She has been incredible,” Rai said. “I wouldn’t be here without her, both as a companion, as a friend, as someone I’m sharing my life with, but also as a real support system for my game.” – AFP “I’m very proud to be from England. That’s where I grew up. That’s where a lot of my family still live,” Rai said. “I’m very proud of India and Kenya as well. My mom still spends a lot of time in Kenya. Both of my sets of grandparents from my mom and dad’s side were from India. “I’m very proud of representing all three really. I don’t know what all that represents or how it’s going to come across. All I can say is I’m very proud to be a mix of all of them.” He learned about being a good man and humble from family and golf. “A lot of that has come from upbringing,” Rai said. “Golf was always a very big part of my life from a very young age, but my mom and my siblings were very fast to reinforce the importance of just being a good person and try ing to do the right things. “Golf in itself is an extremely humbling game. There’s so much hard work and discipline that goes into acquiring the skills to become better.” Rai’s wife, Gaurika Bishnoi, is a pro golfer from India whose advice in a car ride to the hotel lingered with him on the course. Humble PGA champ Rai celebrates English, Indian and Kenyan heritage A ARON RAI grew up hardworking and humble in central England, family exam ples developing the patterns that led to his victory yesterday at the PGA Championship. The 31-year-old became the first English golfer since Jim Barnes in 1919 to capture the PGA crown, making four birdies and an eagle in the last 10 holes to produce a four-stroke victory at Aronimink. “It definitely feels like a journey,” Rai said. “So much goes into it, from being a junior golfer to devel oping the game to have aspirations of turning profes sional. Then you realize once you turn professional how good some of these guys are.” Rai’s father is of Indian ancestry while his mother has Kenyan heritage and growing up in England has made him a mix of all their cultures.
EVERY PLAYER at the PGA Championship will be absolutely delighted that Aaron Rai has claimed the title. That’s the view of Rory McIlroy, who was full of praise for the Englishman follow ing his maiden major victory. McIlroy struggled to challenge the leaders on the day, even losing his composure and swearing at a spectator, yet was overjoyed to witness Rai lift the trophy. “Aaron is getting away from the field a little bit and looks like he’s going to win, which is great,” said McIlroy as Rai drained a 68-foot putt for birdie on 17. “You won’t find one person on property who’s not happy for him.” McIlroy was paired with former Ryder Cup star Xander Schauffele throughout the final round, and the American wholeheartedly shared the Northern Irishman’s sentiments. “I’m super happy for him. He’s such a good dude,” said Schauffele after the final round. “Rarely do you see people work
really hard. I mean, that’s not fair. Rarely do you feel like people work way harder than you is what I was trying to say. “I feel like I’ve played a pretty good amount of time, and Aaron is always there. He’s always in the gym. He’s always on the range.” LIV Golf star Jon Rahm posted a two-under for the day and ended tied-second. Despite coming up just short, he was equally effusive in his admiration for Rai. “I haven’t spent a lot of time with him,” said Rahm. “But I have heard consistently there’s very few people that are nicer and kinder human beings than Rai. “Anybody that wears or uses head covers in his irons because he coveted his irons when he was a kid so much that he wanted to respect the equipment so much, and to still do it? Yeah, exactly, he’s still doing it shows a lot about a person.” – Express Newspapers

Rajasthan slipped from fifth to sixth as their playoff hopes took a hit with their sixth defeat in 12 matches. “Coming from a break, skill-wise, energy-wise, execution-wise we weren’t there and if we play like this, we shouldn’t be in the top four,” said Parag. “We had the opportunity, we didn’t take it. If we don’t qualify, it’s our fault, nobody else’s.” Player-of-the-match Starc added: “We didn’t bowl too badly in the power play but they batted well, but we brought things back later and KL batted fantastically, and to finish at home with a win is always nice.” Delhi jumped to seventh spot in the 10-team table with seven teams jostling for three remaining playoff berths. The top four teams after the league stage will qualify. Earlier in the day, defending champi ons Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first team to qualify for the playoffs with a 23-run win over Punjab Kings. – AFP

do when a batter is going hard…” In a season where flat pitches and short boundaries have led to ballooning totals, the Australian said staying grounded was crucial to survive such batter-friendly conditions. “That’s the beauty of T20. Games come around so quickly, you can’t really get too low if things haven’t gone the way you wanted, and likewise you can’t get too high if things have gone fantas tic,” Starc said. “I think that’s the key – staying pretty level. “As a bowler, you’ve got to put the ego aside a lot of the time because the ALEX MARQUEZ and Johann Zarco will remain in hospital after the two riders sustained fractures in separate crashes that forced the Catalan Grand Prix to be red-flagged twice yesterday. Gresini Racing’s Marquez could not react in time when Pedro Acosta’s bike lost power and he slammed into the back scores can be a bit inflated.” Double crash horror
Delhi coach lauds Starc DELHI CAPITALS head coach Hemang Badani hailed Mitchell Starc as a role model after the left-arm pacer produced a match-winning performance to keep their Indian Premier League (IPL) playoff hopes alive. “He is possibly one of the best role models anyone can have in sport,”Badani said after Delhi picked up their sixth win in 13 matches. “His work ethic, his preparation before the game, his own plans and his training are above par. I don’t see that even with a lot of the younger boys. That is the reason why he has sustained for so long.” While Badani admired the skill set of Australia’s pace spearhead, he was even more impressed with how the 36-year old has mentored Delhi’s young bowlers this season. “He is always trying to pass on knowl edge - how can you do reverse swing, how do you hold lengths, what do you
