M OTHERHOOD takes centre stage in artist Red Hong Yi’s latest solo exhibition I’m a Mum?! , offering an intimate exploration of pregnancy, postpartum recovery and the shifting identity of becoming a mother. Known for her multidisciplinary approach, Red’s latest body of work moves away from polished depictions of motherhood, instead it embraces its rawness, vulnerability and complexity. Created while navigating pregnancy and the early postpartum months, the exhibition captures Red’s lived experience through deeply autobiographical works. Among its highlights is a series of 30 embroidered pieces developed as a visual diary during her confinement period, documenting the emotional and physical realities of new motherhood. Body imprints from pregnancy further preserve the physical memory of carrying life, while works featuring elements from a child’s high chair reflect the ongoing chaos and evolving responsibilities of caregiving. “With my youngest being only four months old, I wanted to show the reality of it: the joy and the tears, the overwhelming love and complex emotions existing in the exact same breath. “My hope is that mothers walk in and recognise themselves and feel seen. If one mother feels less alone because of these pieces, then it would make me feel all this work was worth it,” said Red. A standout installation My Confinement Bed serves as the emotional core of the exhibition. Drawing parallels to Tracey Emin’s My Bed (1998), the work transforms the bed into a psychological and deeply personal site that reflects confinement, exhaustion and maternal labour. Rather than idealising domesticity, the installation foregrounds the emotional and physical demands of postpartum life, challenging conventional narratives surrounding femininity and motherhood. Supported by The Perabot, the piece also served as the setting for the exhibition’s opening day artist talk on Mother’s Day, moderated by Ling Yah of So This Is My Why Podcast . The intimate
