SPORTS FRIDAY | MAY 8, 2026 28 ‘He will be back’ Formula 1 misses Horner, says FIA president F IA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes Formula 1 misses Christian Horner as the former Red Bull team boss explores a return to Formula 1? You can’t. It was always successf ul. But success also has enemies, as we know. “If you ask me, we miss him in this sport and I do. I keep in touch with him. said Cummins, who took 2-34 and a pair of catches. Hyderabad knocked Punjab from top spot and took over first place in the table with 14 points from 11 matches. Punjab, who are eyeing their first title, slipped to second with their third straight defeat but have played one match fewer than 2016 champions Hyderabad. “We weren’t that comprehensive enough on the field, nor in bowling, nor in batting,” said Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer. “So I think they played comprehensive cricket and they showed us how to win the match. We got to go back, reflect on things that we didn’t do well in the last three matches, and see to it that we come back strong.” Sharp fielding gave Hyderabad the advan tage, with secure catching contrasting Punjab’s missed chances. Connolly dropped Ishan on nine and the wicketkeeper-batter survived again on 18 when Lockie Ferguson spilled a chance at backward square-leg. Ishan lived a charmed life as Prabhsimran Singh missed an easy stumping off Yuzvendra Chahal. Shahshank Singh dropped Klaasen on nine. – AFP RORY MCILROY says he’s “more motivated” than ever after bagging his second Masters title to take his tally of major championships to six. The Northern Ireland star said his repeat tri umph at Augusta National last month “feels a lot different” from his 2025 victory, when he ended an 11-year major title drought to com plete a career Grand Slam. “Even winning felt different,” the Northern Ireland star said yesterday as he prepared to tee it up in this week’s PGA Tour Truist Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. “I felt like winning the Grand Slam was going to be this life-changing thing and in some ways it was, but in other ways I had to remember like, no, I still have a lot of my career left and I want to keep playing and keep com peting. “So this year was I think winning was valida tion for all the work that I’ve put in over the last few years to get myself back to this place where I’m winning majors. “I’m excited for the road ahead,” McIlroy added, looking ahead to next week’s PGA Championship at Aronimink near Philadelphia as well as the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in June and the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July. “I feel like if anything I’m more motivated after what happened at Augusta this year than I’ve ever been.” World No. 2 McIlroy has kept a low profile since his Masters win, opting out of the RBC Heritage and last week’s Cadillac Championship at Doral, both elite signature events. He said he gave himself “a good 10 days to enjoy myself and the thought I needed to get back on the range and start to practice and get ready for this stretch coming up.” McIlroy, who celebrated his 37th birthday this week, is chasing his fifth career win at Quail Hollow, where he won his first US PGA Tour title in 2010 and added victories in 2015, 2021 and 2024. He fell to Rickie Fowler in a playoff in 2012. “I really feel like this tournament got my career going, especially on the PGA Tour,”McIlroy said. “Getting my first win on tour in 2010, then it’s been a pretty fruitful place since then as well. Some of my best days of my career have been on this golf course.” – AFP Motivated McIlroy ready to tee off

“We would welcome him back, and someone like him will always find his way. I always say to him, ‘you talk too much, but you don’t mean anything bad.’ He has a clean heart. “And he wants to come back. As I said, I talk to him regularly, and I feel he will be back. When he comes back, it will be like he went for a vacation.” Horner is known to be interested in acquiring a stake in any F1 team he joins. As well as Alpine, the 52-year-old has also been linked with Aston Martin, who have endured a horrid start to the 2026 campaign. He also worked alongside Aston’s team principal and F1 design guru Adrian Newey at Red Bull for nearly two decades. Horner, who led Red Bull to 14 world championships in total, acknowledged at a public event in Dublin in January that he has “unfinished business” in Formula 1. someone like him has that history behind him, you don’t look at his credibility. People will come to him. But also, it has to be both ways, because how do people know that you are interested if you don’t show your interest? “I don’t give advice. He’s been a character in the sport.” Horner, who received a reported £80 million He has also been linked with Ferrari, though a move to Maranello is unlikely given he is keen on owning a stake. He won 14 F1 world championships in total. The British executive has been linked with Alpine – and is part of a consortium which has bid for a minority stake in the team, alongside a pitch from Mercedes – as well as Aston Martin and even the top job at Ferrari. SOUTH AFRICA’S Heinrich Klaasen smacked 69 to help Sunrisers Hyderabad climb to the top of the IPL table with a convincing 33-run win over Punjab Kings yesterday. Klaasen put on key stands including a 88-run partnership with Ishan Kishan, who made 55, to guide Hyderabad to 235-4 at their home Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Klaasen and Ishan built on the blazing start by openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, the pair putting on 54 runs from 21 balls. Abhishek struck 35 off 13 deliveries and Head hammered a quick 38 to lay the founda tion for the commanding total. Hyderabad’s bowlers restricted Punjab to 202-7 despite a valiant unbeaten 107 by Australia’s Cooper Connolly, who struck his maiden T20 century in his debut IPL season. Connolly, 22, surpassed Quinton de Kock’s record as the youngest overseas player to score an IPL hundred. South African De Kock was 23 when he made a century for Delhi a decade ago. Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins was full of praise for his compatriot. “Good to see the Aussies doing well. He’s been a star this season with the bat for them. Yeah, not bowling at the moment, but still show ing his worth as a batter. So good time for Oz,”
