Millwall rise, Foxes fall

MILLWALL edged ahead of Ipswich in the battle to join Coventry in the Premier League next season as Leicester’s 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth pushed the Foxes towards the third tier on Saturday. Frank Lampard’s Coventry ended their 25-year wait to return to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn on Friday. Derek Mazou-Sacko and Camiel Neghli struck as Millwall revitalised their push to reach the top flight for the first time in the Premier League era with a 2-0 win at The Den. Alex Neil’s side move one point above Ipswich, who have two games in hand, starting at fifth-placed Middlesbrough. “I thought today we certainly got that monkey off our back,” said Neil after just one win in Millwall’s previ ous five games.

Leicester were docked six points this season for breaching financial rules in previous campaigns. But even without that punishment, they would now sit in the bottom three and back-to-back rele gations could be confirmed tomorrow. “I think a lack of fight is something that’s been labelled at the team over the course of a season. I don’t know whether that’s fair but I think we showed a lack of quality,” said Leicester boss Gary Rowett. “I thought we showed a lack of toughness to do the basics in the one moment where we con cede from a set-piece.” West Brom’s 2-0 win at Preston means that Leicester are now eight points adrift of safety with just nine left to play for. Wrexham’s bid for a historic fourth consecutive promotion is back on track after they beat Stoke 2-0 and Hull were held 1-1 by Birmingham. The Welsh side cut the gap on the playoff places to two points. Derby also kept their playoff hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Oxford. – AFP

“I thought we attacked it, I thought we were aggressive.” Southampton maintained their charge towards the automatic promotion places as Cameron Archer scored a late winner to beat Swansea 2-1. The Saints stretch their unbeaten run to 19 games ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup semi final against Manchester City. Tonda Eckert’s men move level on points with Ipswich, who they have still to play in their final three games of the league sea son.

At the bottom of the table, Leicester’s demise since winning the Premier League 10 years ago shows no sign of stopping. Portsmouth all but secured their Championship status thanks to Ibane Bowat’s second half goal. Lead, lose, repeat

T OTTENHAM manager Roberto De Zerbi said his side are “not finished yet” despite a bitterly disappoint ing 2-2 draw against Brighton yes terday to leave them mired in the Premier League relegation zone. Spurs twice took the lead in front of pas sionate home fans and Xavi Simons’ won derful strike in the 77th minute appeared to have earned a precious three points as the clock ticked down. But wild scenes of joy among the fans turned to disbelief when Georginio Rutter slotted home to ensure the spoils were shared at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result left Spurs 18th in the Premier League, one point behind West Ham and two behind Nottingham Forest with five games remaining. The spectre of a first relegation since 1977 looms large for last season’s Europa League winners, who are ranked by Deloitte as the ninth richest club in the world. Former Brighton and Marseille boss De Zerbi, taking charge of his first home game, admitted the draw felt like a defeat but said his team had the quality to win all five of their remaining games. “It’s not finished yet, we have another five games, it’s tough,” he said. “Everyone of us knows it’s a tough moment, it’s a difficult situation, but we have another five games, 15 points. “And this team is able to win five games in a row.” The Italian urged his players, who looked distraught at the end of the match, to believe in him. “They have to follow me, they have not to think, they have to follow me and to lis ten to me,” he said. “I’m proud of their performance, they have to be stronger and to be focused just on the Wolverhampton game (next week). “And to come to the training ground on Monday afternoon with a smile, because otherwise they go home immediately. “I have no time to see negative people, to see sad players or sad assistants. No, we

are lucky because we are working in a big club, a big stadium, we are working in the Premier League.” After the game at Wolves, Spurs have matches to come against Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea and Everton. The squad is packed with quality but despite De Zerbi’s positive words, their chances of survival look increasingly bleak. Tottenham have forgotten how to win in the league – failing to pick up a victory since December. Adding to their problems, Forest and West Ham are regularly picking up vital points. Leeds beat Wolves 3-0 on Saturday and are now eight points clear of danger. De Zerbi, brought in earlier this month as Tottenham’s third head coach of the sea son, has an incredibly difficult task despite encouraging signs against Brighton. But he urged his men to have belief and play with adventure. “Now we need courage, now we need to win the game and to win the game we have to be positive and to play football with the ball and not stay just to defend 11 players and going counter-attack,” he said. Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, who is chasing a European spot next season, cer tainly feels the London side have the qual ity to survive. “They have unbelievable players in their squad,” he said. “They have in their front line players who can make a difference with one action, and that’s what they showed today. “Therefore, I think they have enough quality in their squad to make it happen.” – AFP Defiant De Zerbi says Spurs ‘not finished yet’ after late equaliser underscores familiar collapse under pressure
