Shelton ousts Nava in Munich
AMERICAN second seed Ben Shelton fought past his lucky loser compatriot Emilio Nava 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Munich Open yesterday. After rallying from a break down in the deciding set, the world No. 6 will next meet the winner of Alexander Blockx’s meeting with Yannick Hanfmann. “It’s tough. Not just (playing against) another American, but probably my best friend out on tour, or one of a few,” Shelton said. “His trajectory has been steep lately, so I’m happy to see the way he has been climbing (the rankings),” Shelton added of the 112th-ranked Nava. “I know he wasn’t feeling 100 percent today, so I feel bad about that. I hope he gets back to 100 percent quickly, because he’s playing great on the clay.” The win improves Shelton’s perfect record to six wins from six outings in 500-level events this year as the 23 year-old tries to go one better than last year on the Bavarian red dirt in pursuit of a career-first clay-court title. Shelton will meet Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match. The winner of that encounter will face Gabriel Diallo in the round of 16 after the Canadian beat Ukrainian qualifier Vitaliy Sachko 6-1, 6-2. Draper’s comeback on hold JACK DRAPER vowed to work his way out of his injury woes after being forced to retire with a right leg problem midwaythrough his first round match against Tomas Etcheverry at the Barcelona Open yesterday. The 24-year-old Briton, who returned to action in February after six months out due to a niggling left arm injury, pulled up while trailing 1-4 in the deciding set of his meeting with Argentine Etcheverry to cast doubts on his fitness for the clay season. “Sad to retire in Barcelona. I’ve tried hard these last monthsto stay positive and give my all,” Draper, who tried to soldier on with taping below his right knee, said in a post on social media. “It will take time but I will work my way out of this. Thank you for all the support throughout this process.” After an early exit in Dubai in February, Draper shook off the cobwebs to beat Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells but his title defence ended in the quarterfinals against Daniil Medvedev. He then suffered another early defeat in Miami and pulled out of Monte Carlo to protect his arm.
his role of impact substitute by taking 4 24 as the 2016 champions bounced back after two losses. “Last year, I had written somewhere that whenever I play my first match, I will definitely take four or five wickets,” said player of the match Hinge. “And I wanted to dominate as much as possible in the powerplay (first six overs when only two fielders are allowed out side the inner circle).” South Africa’s Donovan Ferreira, who top-scored with 69, and Ravindra Jadeja, who made 45, then put on 118 before Hyderabad were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. It was Rajasthan’s first defeat in five games in this edition but they still top the 10-team table. “There are definitely positives to take,” said Rajasthan skipper Riyan Parag after the match. “It could have been a lot worse, and we had a strong partnership in there as well. It’s just a blip.” It was Sooryavanshi’s wicket that stunned Rajasthan as the in-form opener top-edged a rising delivery from Hinge with the ball going high and caught by wicketkeeper Salil Arora. The baby-faced Sooryavanshi looked up to the sky and walked back disap pointed only to see more trouble for his team in the big chase. Earlier, Hyderabad skipper Ishan Kishan hit 91 off 44 balls to guide his team to 216-6 after being invited to bat first. – AFP performances in India’s 50-over World Cup triumph, with Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc receiving the men’s award. The prolific Abhishek Sharma was named Wisden’s leading T20 cricketer of the year. Wisden editor Lawrence Booth, however, criticised the increasing Indian influence on English domestic cricket’s Hundred, with four of the eight franchises now linked to owners of Indian Premier League teams after a huge influx of private investment. “The competition’s new ownership structure risks turning The Hundred into an IPL proxy event, more for the benefit of Indian businessmen than English cricket,” wrote Booth. He also pulled no punches in labelling England’s woeful Ashes campaign as “feckless, reckless and legless”. England, humiliated 4-1 by Australia, were criticised for insufficient planning, confused tactics and an over-relaxed approach to off-field behaviour, highlighted by reports of excessive drinking during a mid-tour break. “In the game’s long history, it is hard to think of a privilege so carelessly squandered, a chance so blithely spurned,” wrote Booth. “England were feckless, reckless and legless. These were the wing-and-a-prayer Ashes and England got what they deserved. What a waste. What a shame.” – AFP “The truth is that Jannik and I have a very good relationship. Obviously it’s not super per sonal, we don’t go out to dinner, we don’t go eat together, but I think the relationship we have off court is very good.” Alcaraz said the Italian was driving him on to be a better player, although he would “not miss him” this week in Barcelona. “(He’s someone who) makes me better, who makes me aware of my weaknesses, who makes me realise what I really have to focus on in every practice and every match,” said the 22 year-old seven-time Grand Slam winner. “I try to push myself every day, and that’s

Indian cricketers dominate Wisden honours
INDIAN CRICKETERS, including men’s Test captain Shubman Gill and women’s star Deepti Sharma, dominated the Wisden cricket awards announced yesterday. The UK-based Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, which dates back to 1864, is an annual record of all major cricket worldwide and is regarded as the sport’s “Bible”. The publication named four Indian players who starred in a thrilling 2-2 drawn Test series in England last year among its five cricketers of the year. Batter Gill, spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj were all on the list. The only English player in the group of five was former Test opener Haseeb Hameed, who led Nottinghamshire to the County Championship in 2025. Players can only receive the award once in their careers and it is based predominantly on performances during the previous English season. Gill also received the Wisden Trophy for Test performance of the year after he scored 269 and 161 in the second Test at Edgbaston. Deepti Sharma succeeds compatriot Smriti Mandhana as Wisden’s leading women’s cricketer of the year for her all-round SPANISH tennis star Carlos Alcaraz said yester day his battle with new world No. 1 Jannik Sinner was giving him extra inspiration ahead of the Barcelona Open. Sinner defeated Alcaraz in the final at the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday to usurp him at the top of the world rankings. Alcaraz can claim back the spot with victory in Barcelona this week, where he finished runner-up last year. “I think the battle for number one that Jannik and I are having is a very beautiful one, and I think it’s probably an extra motivation,” Alcaraz told reporters.
Rivalry fuels Alcaraz push
why it’s really nice to have him as a reference point and to see him achieving everything he’s achieving.” Alcaraz said he was happy to see Sinner tak ing “giant steps forward” on clay and that they were very even on every surface. “When we face each other, between him and me there isn’t really a favourite, it doesn’t matter if we play on grass, on hard court or on clay,” he added. The Spaniard has won the Barcelona Open twice, in 2022 and 2023, and takes on Finnish player Otto Virtanen on Tuesday in the round of 32. – AFP
