LUNDU: Owners of idle or underutilised agricultural land are urged to consider leasing their land to ensure it remains productive, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. He said the initiative would help optimise land use while reducing Malaysia’s reliance on food imports. He stressed that landowners do not need to sell their property but rent it out to companies or entrepreneurs interested in developing the land. “Typically, companies seeking to lease land require long-term arrangements of 10 years or more, as agriculture takes time from planting until yields are obtained,” he said after visiting a Tanjung Purun padi planting project yesterday. Mohamad said Malaysia, once among the world’s leading rubber exporters, is now importing the commodity due to declining domestic production. He attributed this to the large number of smallholder rubber plots that are no longer being cultivated. “Among the main factors is a labour shortage as young generations migrate to urban areas, leaving plantations untended. In some cases, landowners are reluctant to lease out their land because they view it as ancestral property, resulting in it remaining idle.” – Bernama ‘Lease out idle farmland to boost food security’ KUALA Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party, which is approaching its 80th anniversary, remains one of the oldest political parties in the Asean region, with a legacy of struggle that reflects resilience. Merah Dam (Perak), Muda Dam (Kedah), Machap Dam (Johor) and Timah Tasoh Dam (Perlis). “Alhamdulillah , we managed to produce rain through every operation, and helped bring the water levels at the dams back to normal.” He said Nadma has received preliminary information on the need for cloud-seeding operations in Sabah and Sarawak as several areas are beginning to experience dry weather. He said the hot and dry weather is expected to persist until either May or June, Bernama reported. Meanwhile, Ambun said the success of cloud-seeding operations depends on three key atmospheric factors – the presence of towering cumulus clouds, weak winds from various directions and high atmospheric moisture content.
He said cloud-seeding uses the technique of spraying salt solution using four tanks with a total capacity of 6,000 litres. “Each cloud-seeding operation takes between eight and nine hours, starting with solution preparation, crew briefing, flight to the target location and dispersing the solution at an altitude of between 5,200ft and 7,000ft.” Ambun said the effects of water droplets forming in the clouds could be seen as early as 30 to 60 minutes after spraying, with rain expected within one to two hours, with a success rate of 80%. He dispelled confusion about the use of hazardous chemicals in the operation, stressing that it merely mimics the natural process of salt molecule condensation from the sea to land, and uses only normal salt solution.

PUTRAJAYA: The government is encouraging Malaysians to switch to the Time of Use (ToU) scheme to cut electricity bills and boost national energy efficiency amid volatile global energy prices. The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry said 128,868 consumers had switched to the ToU scheme as of February, a clear sign of growing public awareness of the need for smarter energy management. It said in a statement that the scheme offers lower rates during off peak hours and higher rates during peak hours, giving a real incentive to change daily usage habits and save money, Bernama reported. Under the scheme, peak hours are weekdays from 2pm to 10pm when demand and rates are high. Off-peak hours include overnight to early morning, weekends and public holidays when rates are lower. It advised users to shift energy intensive activities, such as running air conditioners, operating washing machines, using water heaters and charging electric vehicles, to off-peak hours to maximise savings. “This approach not only lowers electricity bills but also supports more efficient, sustainable energy use.” It is seen as a key initiative to help Malaysians control electricity costs. SUBANG: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is prepared to conduct cloud-seeding operations nationwide based on state government requests to ensure sufficient dam water levels. Its deputy director-general (Operations) Datuk Dr Abdul Gapar Abu Bakar said every application submitted through State Disaster Management Committees would be comprehensively assessed before any operation is conducted. “For example, if Perlis submits a request, and Kedah is facing the same issue at the same time, then we will conduct the operation simultaneously.” He was speaking during cloud

Also present was Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) deputy director general (Operations) Ambun Dindang. The railway operator announced that the decision was made after the implementation of infrastructure upgrading works for the Klang Valley Electric Double Track Project Phase 2 (KVDT2) between Salak Selatan Station and Seremban Station. It added that the rescheduling is aimed at paving the way for the 67km track upgrading work to be carried out more safely and efficiently, as well as speeding up the project’s completion timeline. “The implementation involves operating using a single track system to ensure the continuity of passenger train and freight train services on the affected routes. “The rationalisation involves upgrading the track system, signalling and infrastructure to improve the safety, stability and efficiency of rail services and the reliability of the rail system in the long term.” It also said during the project implementation period, which is expected to last until the end of December, the morning and evening peak frequency for KTM Komuter services on the Pulau Sebang-Batu Caves-Pulau Sebang route would be optimised to five services with an interval of 15 minutes and 30 minutes “During the implementation period, no KTM Komuter services will operate from 10am to 4pm on the Midvalley-Pulau Sebang and Pulau Sebang-Bandar Tasik Selatan routes.” It said the track between Salak Selatan Station and Seremban Station would be closed from 10pm to 6am to allow maintenance and upgrading work to be carried out more intensively. MACC is still investigating the total number of individuals who paid the civil servant suspect to receive the said awards, as alleged. RM28 million upgrade for Kelantan bazaar KOTA BHARU: The RM28 million upgrade of Bazaar Buluh Kubu here is expected to strengthen the batik industry by enhancing facilities and revitalising the trading area, which will be rebranded as Bazar Siti Aisyah. Bazar Buluh Kubu Batik and Craft Association chairman Datin Nik Rosmawati Nik Yusoff said the bazaar, which has been operating for over 41 years, is among the oldest in the state and requires a comprehensive upgrade. She said the project follows numerous complaints over the deteriorating premises and inadequate basic facilities, including poor lighting, parking issues and the lack of disabled-friendly amenities. “The traders are grateful to the federal government, particularly Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as the Kelantan State Economic Development Corporation for undertaking this upgrade. “The bazaar houses about 100 traders, with around 90% involved in batik and handicraft businesses. We are thankful it will be upgraded soon.” Nik Rosmawati said traders are expected to vacate the premises by the end of next month to allow upgrading works, which are estimated to take 36 months to complete. During this period, traders will be temporarily relocated to a former supermarket building in Jalan Padang Garong, where rental rates are expected to be higher as the premises are privately owned. “We hope the government will consider providing incentives to ease the burden on traders during the relocation period, as the costs involved are quite high.” She also expressed hope that promotional efforts would be intensified to ensure Bazar Siti Aisyah remains a key visitor destination upon completion. Free vehicle inspections and maintenance tips over festive period lauded
KOTA KINABALU: JCI Keningau Baru has successfully concluded its “Check Dulu” car safety campaign, an initiative aimed at promoting road safety awareness among motorists. The event was organised in collaboration with Alfred Wong Enterprise and the Keningau District Council, with the primary goal of encouraging the public to conduct thorough vehicle safety checks the Hari Raya period. Organising chairperson Adoria Tan said this was the second edition of the campaign, following a similar effort held earlier during the Chinese New Year season. She added that the organisation plans to extend the initiative throughout the year, with upcoming editions scheduled to coincide with the Kaamatan festival and Christmas.
The campaign not only provided free vehicle inspection services but also served as a platform to educate drivers on the importance of routine car maintenance. By targeting peak travel seasons throughout the year, JCI Keningau Baru aims to cultivate a lasting culture of safety and responsibility among road users in the community. JCI Keningau Baru founder Wilson Gan praised the campaign as a meaningful effort by the youth organisation to contribute to community safety. He emphasised that the partnership with the district council played a vital role in the success of the campaign and expressed optimism about future collaborations between the two parties. – BY JOSHUA CHANG

them,“ he added. Rajan, who is also head of the Otorhinolaryngology Department at the hospital, highlighted the need for early screening to detect vision problems, which also includes provision of spectacles. He was speaking to reporters after attending Perkam’s latest eye screening project conducted with the cooperation of the State Education Department for pupils at SJK (C) Jelapang here. Meanwhile, Perkam secretary K. Nachemuthu revealed that the focus was on kindergarten children and Standard One pupils as part of early screening to detect vision issues. “There must also be a large-scale programme involving the relevant ministries and departments to create awareness on the importance of eye care and early screening.” “It is hoped that the elected representatives in their respective constituencies would contribute when such screening projects are held. “Optometrists have played their part by offering spectacles at discount prices of up to 50%.”
IPOH: A field study to screen the eyes of children from six primary schools in the Kinta district in 2023 revealed that between 89% and 95% of them had vision issues. The screening exercise was carried out on 667 pupils by the Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Makmur Negeri Perak (Perkam) and a private optometrist. Pupils with major refractive errors were provided with free pair of spectacles. According to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital Clinical Research Centre head Datuk Dr Philip Rajan Devesahayam, the children were found to have either short sightedness or long sightedness. “Although it is not at a serious stage, it can affect the academic performance and concentration of the pupils,” he said. “They may be seen as not being interested in their studies but actually, they are struggling. “Usage of gadgets, especially handphones, contributes to the decline of vision among

Indonesia urges probe on death of peacekeepers JAKARTA: Indonesia said yesterday it has submitted a joint statement on peacekeeper security with allied nations to the United Nations (UN) after three of its blue helmets were killed in Lebanon. The countries urged the UN Security Council to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents in Southern Lebanon that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers and wounded several others, including from France, Ghana, Nepal and Poland. The Foreign Ministry in Jakarta said 73 countries and UN observer nations supported the statement, delivered by Indonesia’s permanent UN representative Umar Hadi in New York. “The safety and security of UN peacekeepers are non-negotiable. We urge the UN Security Council to use all available instruments to boost protection for peacekeeping forces amid an increasingly dangerous situation,“ the ministry quoted Umar as saying. “Troop-contributing countries also call for an end to violence in Lebanon and de-escalation of tensions, and encourage all parties to return to the negotiating table to achieve a peaceful settlement.“ Three Indonesian peacekeepers died in two separate blasts in southern Lebanon in late March. A third blast less than a week later, inside a UN facility in southern Lebanon, injured three more Indonesian soldiers. The incidents sparked calls from Indonesian authorities for a probe and security guarantees for peacekeeping forces. The Foreign Ministry has called the attacks “unacceptable”. It urged the UN Security Council “to immediately convene a meeting of troop-contributing countries to Unifil (UN Interim Force in Lebanon) to conduct a review and take measures to enhance the protection of personnel serving with Unifil”. President Prabowo Subianto said he “strongly condemns every heinous act that undermines peace and causes the deaths of our nation’s soldiers”. – AFP to prevent misuse. “This is important because we are not only addressing transport costs. We are also preventing increases in the prices of food and other essential goods,” said Marcos. The measure forms part of the government’s broader response to a national energy emergency, as global oil prices surge following disruptions in supply routes, including tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Marcos said the intervention aims to protect transport workers and consumers from the ripple effects of rising fuel costs. government will provide a PHP10 (RM0.66) per litre fuel subsidy for public utility vehicles for up to three months as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices, said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr on Thursday. He said the subsidy will cover up to 150 litres per week per vehicle, Philippine News Agency reported. The programme will initially be rolled out in Metro Manila next week, starting along Commonwealth Avenue, before expanding to major corridors, including Quezon Avenue, España, Zapote, E. Bonifacio, Rizal Avenue and Marcos Highway. The subsidy will be implemented through accredited petrol stations monitored by the Energy Department The junta-organised re-run of the vote excluded parties that won more than 90% of seats in 2020 and punished protest or criticism of the poll with prison time, according to the Asian Network for Free Elections. Voting did not take place in swathes of the country that have been seized by rebels battling the military and rejecting the vote, further undermining Aung Hlaing’s mandate, according to rights monitors. – AFP Hlaing’s 30 ministers, also sworn in yesterday, are either retired or serving members of the military. Myanmar’s post-coup leaders have been considered pariahs by many nations abroad. Analysts say one aim of the election was to normalise their image with a veneer of legitimacy, unfreezing foreign engagement, including investment projects. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the neighbouring nations of China, India and Thailand. This week, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul sent a congratulatory message, according to Myanmar state media, saying under Aung Hlaing’s “able leadership” the nations’ relations would “grow from strength to strength”. China was the election’s biggest backer and discussions over stalled Beijing-backed infrastructure projects are now being revived, analysts say. Myanmar’s military has ruled the country for most of its post-independence history. A rare decade-long interlude starting in 2011 saw the top brass loosen their grip and Suu Kyi’s civilian government tentatively take the reins in a burst of optimism and reform. Analysts say the military snatched back power in 2021 out of anxiety about their waning influence after her landslide victory over pro-military parties in 2020 elections.
Aung Hlaing resigned as top general to take over as president of the new government ahead of Myanmar’s Thingyan holiday starting on Monday, which celebrates the new year with water-splashing ceremonies of renewal and rejuvenation. Democracy watchdogs deride the transition as a rebranding of military rule in an unconvincing civilian disguise. AFP reporters saw bomb squads patrolling Naypyidaw hotels ahead of the ceremony and Parliament sequestered by rings of checkpoints. Aung Hlaing ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, detaining the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and triggering a civil war. After a half-decade of ruling by diktat, he organised an election concluding in January that excluded her party and secured a walkover win for military allies in civilian politics who backed him into the top office. A parliamentary ceremony in the capital Naypyidaw saw the 69-year-old read a presidential oath promising to “strive for further flourishing of the eternal principles of justice, liberty and equality”. “I will dedicate myself to the service of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,” he said upon starting his five-year term.
