Farke wants ‘piece of history’

League side who is of course giving eve rything and trying everything to come back into the game.” Stoppage time, extra-time and the shootout were played out in front of a half-empty stadium after the exodus of home fans. “What I saw on the pitch was more important than anything,” said Hammers boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose side have a crucial relegation clash with Wolves on Saturday (3am Malaysian time). “What I saw was a group of players, a group of boys that didn’t give up. This is the major lesson that we have to take from today.” – The Independent
DANIEL FARKE revelled in making his tory for Leeds after a “crazy” FA Cup quarterfinal at West Ham. The Whites reached the last four of this competition for the first time in 39 years – but only after a penalty shootout, having blown a two-goal lead in stoppage time. Thousands of West Ham fans left early as the clock ticked round to 90 minutes after goals from Ao Tanaka and Dominic Calvert-Lewin put the visitors 2-0 up. But those who left prematurely missed a cast-iron cup classic, starting
United in the FA Cup in the 80s. “It was a crazy game and it has cost lots of energy, but in the FA Cup quarter final both teams are able to fight for quite another piece of history for the club. “To reach, for the first time

L IVERPOOL’S SQUAD held an emergency meeting following Saturday’s defeat away to Manchester City in the FA Cup. The Reds had started the match well, but began to fade away as the first half progressed, and by the hour mark found themselves 4-0 behind. Mohamed Salah missed the chance to pull one back for Liverpool, with the soon-to-be-departing winger missing a penalty. But it was unlikely to have made much difference, with the result marking the latest low point in a sorry season for Arne Slot and co. The Sun claim that the players held a summit following the City defeat, as they look to banish the demons ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Paris Saint Germain. The six-time European champions face the current holders in Paris, just weeks after the Ligue 1 outfit stuck eight past Chelsea across two legs. It’s a daunting task for Liverpool, with suggestions that Slot might not see the end of the season, should his side suffer a similarly humiliating defeat. Liverpool’s travelling fans were heard singing songs in favour of for mer midfielder Xabi Alonso while leaving the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with the Spanish coach hav ing been linked with an Anfield return. Reports claim the meeting was led by captain Virgil van Dijk who said his side “have a responsibility, not only to ourselves but especially to the fans”
once their fate in the FA Cup was sealed. He also revealed that the meeting took place, a worrying sign for Slot as the players know how badly they have failed this season after splashing over £400 million (RM2.1b) on the squad last summer. “We spoke about it in the dressing room but it’s on us.” Speaking after his side’s 15th defeat of the season, Slot said: “I don’t think you have to ask me about the result, because that speaks for itself. That’s an unbelievable disappointment. “Losing is already a disappoint ment, losing with 4-0 and in the quar terfinal of the FA Cup against a team which Liverpool played so many times great games against – or fights against – and then losing 4-0 is, of course, a big disappointment. The 20 minutes where we conceded four goals were not of our standards. “I wouldn’t like to point out to indi viduals after a loss like this or after a disappointing season that we are hav ing. I think it’s about the team. “Mo (Salah) had a few good chances, which is always important because you want players like him to get chances, and I think that’s what in general we did this season, getting him or other players in good posi tions. “Unfortunately, if you look at not only today but the whole season, the amount of goals we scored is far too low for the amount of chances we cre ated, but definitely for the Liverpool standard.” – Express Newspapers
