Enzo iced despite calm claims
LIAM ROSENIOR insisted his relationship with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is in a “good place” despite his controversial decision to ban the Argentine for two matches. Blues boss Rosenior opted to drop Fernandez for yesterday’s 7-0 win over Port Vale in the FA Cup after he hinted he would be willing to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. Fernandez’s agent Javier Pastore has criti cised Chelsea’s decision to ban the midfielder after recent public comments about his future, saying the Argentina international does not understand the punishment. Last week the World Cup winner said he would “look at his options after the World Cup” and expressed a desire to live in Spain. “The punishment is completely unfair,”
Pastore told the Athletic newspaper. “There’s no real reason or justification for why he has been banned. Enzo didn’t understand the situation.” The 25-year-old, who is under contract until 2032 and has captained Chelsea in the absence of injured Reece James, has been linked with Real Madrid, although he denied talks with the Spanish club. Rosenior said his issues with Fernandez will not fester once the ban is over. “That’s his opinion,” said Rosenior of the agent’s remarks. “I don’t have anything to say on someone
role which Rosenior believes the England for ward is ready to take on. “I think it’s a natural step for Cole where he is in his career,” Rosenior said. “He shows leadership. You have different types of leadership. You have players who talk, who organise. “What Cole does and where he leads is he’s so brave and he’ll take the ball on the pitch. And if he makes a mistake, he’ll take the ball and be positive again. “That reflects what I want in this team. I felt Cole led the team magnificently in the game today.” – AFP Man City’s Erling Haalandcelebrates after Antoine Semenyo (not pictured) scores the third goal during the FA Cup quarterfinal clash against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium. – REUTERSPIC
else’s opinion. Enzo knows what I think of him and it was brilliant to see him here to support the players today. “In the right time, in the right moment, which isn’t now, going through what we’ve gone through, I’m sure the discussion will happen in terms of what’s been said between me and Enzo. “Enzo and I are in a very good place. I saw him today, had a really good conversation with him today one-to-one. Things aren’t what people maybe think they are.” In the absence of Fernandez and Reece James, Cole Palmer was given the captain’s armband for the first time, a

City storm into FA Cup semis as Haaland treble piles pressure on Liverpool boss Arne Slot E RLING HAALAND hit a hattrick as Manchester City thrashed Liverpool 4-0 on Saturday to reach the FA Cup semifinals and increase the pres
successive season. After beating Liverpool twice in the Premier League this term, City have enjoyed three successive victories over the Reds for the first time since 1937. City have also won 18 consecutive home FA Cup matches, setting a new record in the competition. Trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by nine points and knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid, City bounced back to beat the Gunners 2-0 in the League Cup final just before the international break. Now they can set their sights on winning the FA Cup for the first time since 2023 while retaining an outside chance of catching Arsenal in the title race. Fresh from scoring twice in the League Cup final, Nico O’Reilly was key to City’s 39th-minute opener. Matheus Nunes picked out O’Reilly in the Liverpool area and as he twisted away from Virgil van Dijk, the defender’s clumsy trip conceded a penalty that Haaland converted in clinical fashion. Haaland doubled City’s advantage on the stroke of halftime. Liverpool were in disarray and Semenyo landed the knockout blow five minutes after the interval. Haaland completed the 28th treble of his career in the 57th minute, drilling home via the underside of the bar after O’Reilly teed him up 12 yards from goal. On a prolonged farewell tour after announcing he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the out-of-form Salah missed his penalty after Nunes fouled Ekitike. – AFP/Reuters

sure on Reds boss Arne Slot. Haaland netted twice late in the first half of the quarterfinal at the Etihad Stadium and completed his treble after the interval following an Antoine Semenyo strike. With Liverpool trailing by four, Moh amed Salah had a penalty saved by City goalkeeper James Trafford to compound a miserable afternoon for the under-fire Slot. Liverpool head to Paris Saint-Germain for the Champions League quarterfinal first leg on Thursday with Slot desperately needing a victory over the holders to keep the critics at bay. “We have had a lot of setbacks and disappointments but that is also part of being a football player and being a human being. You have to stand there when things are not so positive,” Slot said. Liverpool, who have just two wins in their last seven matches in all competitions, are fifth in the Premier League and far from certain to qualify for next season’s Champions League. It is a remarkable decline for Slot, who just 12 months ago was on the brink of leading Liverpool to their record-equalling 20th English title. “It’s very disappointing to be out, not only in the manner but also the score. Another big disappointment for us,” Slot said. “The only good thing was that we didn’t concede more.” City’s ruthless performance took them into the FA Cup semifinals for an eighth
